I am using logback and mysql like this:
<appender name="db" class="ch.qos.logback.classic.db.DBAppender">
<connectionSource class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.DataSourceConnectionSource">
<dataSource class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource">

<jdbcUrl>${jdbc.url}</jdbcUrl>
<user>${jdbc.username}</user>
<password>${jdbc.password}</password>
</dataSource>
</connectionSource>
</appender>
However I get:
11:51:45,851 |-WARN in ch.qos.logback.core.db.DataSourceConnectionSource#4c1be833 - Could not get a connection to discover the dialect to use. java.sql.SQLException: Connections could not be acquired from the underlying database!

What is wrong?
I am using mysql-connector-5.0.08 and the database is mysql 5.0.51
EDITED:
I tried to add <sqlDialect class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.dialect.MySQLDialect" /> like this:
<appender name="db" class="ch.qos.logback.classic.db.DBAppender">
<connectionSource class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.DataSourceConnectionSource">
<dataSource class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource">
<driverClass>com.mysql.jdbc.Driver</driverClass>
<jdbcUrl>${jdbc.url}</jdbcUrl>
<user>${jdbc.username}</user>
<password>${jdbc.password}</password>
</dataSource>
</connectionSource>
<sqlDialect class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.dialect.MySQLDialect" />`
</appender>
But with no success!
I got this error
java.lang.IllegalStateException: DBAppender cannot function if the
JDBC driver does not support getGeneratedKeys method and without a
specific SQL dialect
The reason was, I have seted a wrong connection URL for DriverManagerConnectionSource. There was no any DB server with that URL. Unfortunately the logback is confusing us with a wrong error message
The problem was that I missed logback-examples-1.0.0.jar
i had a similar error pop up, and it was simply a configuration error.... The "driverClass" was wrong in my xml config file.... I didn't notice right off because I took it from an existing project where I assumed it worked...
So long story short, make sure you're driverClass is:
com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
if you're trying to connect to mysql!
The root cause is right at the bottom of your log snippet:
ERROR in ch.qos.logback.core.joran.spi.Interpreter#14:13 - RuntimeException in Action for tag [appender] java.lang.IllegalStateException: DBAppender cannot function if the JDBC driver does not support getGeneratedKeys method *and* without a specific SQL dialect
You'll have to specify a MySQL dialect in the configuration for DBAppender.

Try replacing the oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver with oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
RESOLVED I've discovered that my database FREE SPACE was very low (less than 100 MB) so I've asked the support team to fix it (increasing the memory available) and now the initial configuration has worked as expected.
Giving a look at another resolved question here I've found some interesting information about how to configure the Connection Pool in Tomcat server:
org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory ( 'v$session.osuser' , value is 'x')
I'm encountering a ORA-12519, TNS:no appropriate service handler found error when attempting to integrate Tomcat's JDBC Pool into my web application, using Oracle.
I typically see this error appear intermittently, after several minutes of running integration tests against the application.
The configuration I have is:
oracle driver and tomcat-dbcp jars in the tomcat/lib directory
two webapps, both using the same Resources. Configuration done in Spring:
<jee:jndi-lookup id="webDS" jndi-name="jdbc/web"
expected-type="javax.sql.DataSource" />
DataSource Resources defined in conf/context.xml, as follows:
<Resource name="jdbc/web" auth="Container"
type="javax.sql.DataSource"
factory="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSourceFactory"
testWhileIdle="true"
testOnBorrow="true"
testOnReturn="false"
validationQuery="SELECT 1"
timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="30000"
maxActive="20"
maxIdle="10"
minIdle="5"
removeAbandonedTimeout="60"
removeAbandoned="false"
logAbandoned="true"
minEvictableIdleTimeMillis="30000"
jdbcInterceptors="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.ConnectionState;org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.StatementFinalizer"
username="${database.user}"
password="${database.password}"
driverClassName="${database.driver}"
url="${database.url}" />
I've tried various suggestions made elsewhere on SO such as increasing or decreasing the maxActive size, but am having no luck thus far. I was previously using c3p0 to manage the pool of connections. With the switch, I'm wondering if there is some additional configuration I need to do that pertains to the closing of connections, because it seems like I'm leaking them.

Your validation query (SELECT 1) will not work in Oracle. It has to be select 1 from dual.
Seems that when using a wrong validation query the application is not able to identify healthy connections and and mark all of them as invalid.
Issue Overview
I'm facing an StaleConnectionException, whenever i deploy my Web application on the IBM Websphere v7.0.0.17. I'm using the datasource connection provided by Websphere through a JNDI Lookup.
ERROR 10 Apr 2014 01:41:20,101 server.startup : 2 org.hibernate.tool.hbm2ddl.SchemaValidator - could not get database metadata
com.ibm.websphere.ce.cm.StaleConnectionException: SEQNAME IS NOT VALID IN THE CONTEXT WHERE IT IS USED. SQLCODE=-206, SQLSTATE=42703, DRIVER=3.51.90
Problem Description
Our Webapplication has developed based on GWT+Spring+Hibernate framework and it running on an IBM Websphere v7 and it interacts with IBM DB2 database. We consumes the datasource object(JNDI Lookup) configured on the Websphere App server.
From the error logs(attached), we understood that the issue occurs during Database Schema Validation against the DB2 database. But, we have cross checked the Hibernate Configuration and Table Structure(schema) has no issues and it is working fine with a tomcat server. This below error appears only on Websphere while deploying the application.
I also followed some suggestion provided on technical forums by reducing the “minimum_connection_size” for the “StaleConnectionException”on the Websphere’s datasource properties, but it doesn’t help me to resolve this error.

Environment Details:
Spring - 3.0.5
Hibernate - 3.5.6
Database - IBM DB2 v10
Spring JNDI Configuration:
NOTE: No issues in Hibernate Configuration and Database Schema, both looks good.
The DB2 error in this case most likely hints at a syntax error in the query. Make sure that the version of the JDBC driver on the application server matches the version of the DB2 server.
I am using a simple java application for manipulating the table records from browser. I have used hibernate for making DAO calls. The application works fine on normal usage. However when the application is idle for 1 to 2 days the following exception occurs.
Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: IO
Error: Connection reset
After using c3p0 the dle time extended up to 10 days. But I want the application to be running up all the time.
I have been using Linux sever. JDK 1.5. Tomcat server 6.

Looks strange, are you holding on to a stale Hibernate Session in some way? You should always get a fresh Hibernate Session and release it afterwards.
The underlying connection is stale.
The normal course of action is either to get the connection pool to test the connection before you use it.
For C3P0:
c3p0.testConnectionOnCheckout=true
c3p0.preferredTestQuery="select 1 from dual"
http://community.jboss.org/wiki/HowToConfigureTheC3P0ConnectionPool
The other option is to set the min number of connections to 0, and make sure the pool is configured to evict unused connections before the database connection timeout is reached.
Add this property in your hibernate config file. I hope it ll work.
<property name="connection.provider_class">
org.hibernate.connection.C3P0ConnectionProvider
</property>
I'm trying to use the new Tomcat 7.0 JDBC connection pool and MySql. It says here that you can drop the latest tomcat-jdbc.jar into your tomcat/lib directory in a Tomcat 6.0 environment, and that's what I've done.
I'm using Spring to initialize and instantiate the DataSource per examples around the web:
<bean id="myDataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource" destroy-method="close"
p:driverClassName="${driver_class}"
p:url="${url}"
p:username="${username?root}"
p:password="${password}"
p:initialSize="10"
p:initSQL="SELECT DTS FROM DT_TM_TS FOR READ ONLY WITH UR"
p:minIdle="10"
p:maxIdle="100"
p:maxActive="100"
p:maxWait="6000"
p:jmxEnabled="true"
p:jdbcInterceptors="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.ConnectionState;org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.StatementFinalizer"
p:removeAbandoned="true"
p:removeAbandonedTimeout="60"
p:logAbandoned="true"
p:testOnBorrow="true"
p:testOnReturn="false"
p:testWhileIdle="false"
p:useEquals="false"
p:fairQueue="false"
p:timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="30000"
p:minEvictableIdleTimeMillis="30000"
p:validationInterval="1800000"
p:validationQuery="SELECT DTS FROM DT_TM_TS FOR READ ONLY WITH UR"
/>
However when I try to connect to the db it throws this exception:

I've got mysql-connector-java-5.1.13-bin.jar in both the webapp WEB-INF/lib and tomcat/lib. I can connect fine specifying the driver details in persistence.xml (no DataSource/connection pooling).
There is actually a very simple workaround with Spring. Instead of having the Tomcat connection pool create the database connection and fail because of class loader shenanigans, let Spring create it and pass a reference to the connection pool.
<!-- Data source template for use in the connection pool. -->
<bean id="dataSourceTemplate" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName" value="${jdbc.driver}" />
<property name="url" value="${jdbc.url}" />
<property name="username" value="${jdbc.username}" />
<property name="password" value="${jdbc.password}" />
</bean>
<!-- Connection pool as data source. -->
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource" destroy-method="close">
<!-- Refer to a separately created bean as a data source template to work around a quirk of Tomcat's class loader. -->
<property name="dataSource" ref="dataSourceTemplate" />
...
</bean>
Then the connection pool will actually use the database connection as a template for creating as many additional connections as it needs.
The best part is that you don't have to mess with tomcat/lib, which you may not even have access to.
I'm using Spring 3.1, Hibernate 4.0, VMware vFabric tc Server Developer Edition 2.6.1 with Tomcat 7.0.20.B and Maven 3. Having the connector managed by Maven I encountered the same issue.
Infact reading the manual I've found
driverClassName
(String) The fully qualified Java class name of the
JDBC driver to be used. The driver has to be accessible from the same
classloader as tomcat-jdbc.jar
So I resolved by adding the mysql connector (mysql-connector-java-5.1.18-bin.jar) in the lib directory of Tomcat (vfabric-tc-server-developer-2.6.1.RELEASE/tomcat-7.0.20.B.RELEASE/lib) and setting in Maven the scope of the connector package to provided.
In Tomcat 6.0 I need to put my JDBC drivers into common/lib/ext
But the search path for that is configured in catalina.properties check out the property common.loader in there. Make sure that common/lib is listed there.
