SQLException w/ Tomcat 7.0 JDBC connection pool and MySql - java

I'm trying to use the new Tomcat 7.0 JDBC connection pool and MySql. It says here that you can drop the latest tomcat-jdbc.jar into your tomcat/lib directory in a Tomcat 6.0 environment, and that's what I've done.
I'm using Spring to initialize and instantiate the DataSource per examples around the web:
<bean id="myDataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource" destroy-method="close"
p:driverClassName="${driver_class}"
p:url="${url}"
p:username="${username?root}"
p:password="${password}"
p:initialSize="10"
p:initSQL="SELECT DTS FROM DT_TM_TS FOR READ ONLY WITH UR"
p:minIdle="10"
p:maxIdle="100"
p:maxActive="100"
p:maxWait="6000"
p:jmxEnabled="true"
p:jdbcInterceptors="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.ConnectionState;org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.interceptor.StatementFinalizer"
p:removeAbandoned="true"
p:removeAbandonedTimeout="60"
p:logAbandoned="true"
p:testOnBorrow="true"
p:testOnReturn="false"
p:testWhileIdle="false"
p:useEquals="false"
p:fairQueue="false"
p:timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="30000"
p:minEvictableIdleTimeMillis="30000"
p:validationInterval="1800000"
p:validationQuery="SELECT DTS FROM DT_TM_TS FOR READ ONLY WITH UR"
/>
However when I try to connect to the db it throws this exception:

I've got mysql-connector-java-5.1.13-bin.jar in both the webapp WEB-INF/lib and tomcat/lib. I can connect fine specifying the driver details in persistence.xml (no DataSource/connection pooling).

There is actually a very simple workaround with Spring. Instead of having the Tomcat connection pool create the database connection and fail because of class loader shenanigans, let Spring create it and pass a reference to the connection pool.
<!-- Data source template for use in the connection pool. -->
<bean id="dataSourceTemplate" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName" value="${jdbc.driver}" />
<property name="url" value="${jdbc.url}" />
<property name="username" value="${jdbc.username}" />
<property name="password" value="${jdbc.password}" />
</bean>
<!-- Connection pool as data source. -->
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource" destroy-method="close">
<!-- Refer to a separately created bean as a data source template to work around a quirk of Tomcat's class loader. -->
<property name="dataSource" ref="dataSourceTemplate" />
...
</bean>
Then the connection pool will actually use the database connection as a template for creating as many additional connections as it needs.
The best part is that you don't have to mess with tomcat/lib, which you may not even have access to.

I'm using Spring 3.1, Hibernate 4.0, VMware vFabric tc Server Developer Edition 2.6.1 with Tomcat 7.0.20.B and Maven 3. Having the connector managed by Maven I encountered the same issue.
Infact reading the manual I've found
driverClassName
(String) The fully qualified Java class name of the
JDBC driver to be used. The driver has to be accessible from the same
classloader as tomcat-jdbc.jar
So I resolved by adding the mysql connector (mysql-connector-java-5.1.18-bin.jar) in the lib directory of Tomcat (vfabric-tc-server-developer-2.6.1.RELEASE/tomcat-7.0.20.B.RELEASE/lib) and setting in Maven the scope of the connector package to provided.

In Tomcat 6.0 I need to put my JDBC drivers into common/lib/ext
But the search path for that is configured in catalina.properties check out the property common.loader in there. Make sure that common/lib is listed there.

IBM MQ v8 and Glassfish local setup port configuration issue

Given the following local setup:
IBM WebSphere MQ Advanced for Developers V8.0
Payara 4.1.2.172
I'd like to connect to the local queue manager via JMS on other than the default port (1414).
In spite I added several properties to the connection factory to configure port 1415, it seems that the server is still trying to connect via port 1414, as Payara constantly throws java.net.ConnectException.
The relevant part of my domain.xml:
<connector-connection-pool resource-adapter-name="wmq.jmsra" name="jms/testCP" connection-definition-name="javax.jms.ConnectionFactory" transaction-support="XATransaction"></connector-connection-pool>
<connector-resource pool-name="jms/testCP" jndi-name="jms/testCF">
<property name="transportType" value="CLIENT"></property>
<property name="port" value="1415"></property>
<property name="channel" value="CHANNEL1"></property>
<property name="hostName" value="localhost"></property>
<property name="localAddress" value="localhost(1415)"></property>
<property name="connectionNameList" value="localhost(1415)"></property>
<property name="queuemanager" value="testQM"></property>
<property name="username" value="mqm"></property>
</connector-resource>
However the exception in server.log suggests that the resource adapter still wants to connect via port 1414:

I'm out of ideas why the exception says:
JMSWMQ0018: Failed to connect to queue manager '' with connection mode 'Client' and host name 'localhost(1414)'.
Question 1: Why is queue manager '' (empty)?
Question 2: Why is host name 'localhost(1414)'?
Any help would be very much appreciated!
In reviewing the IBM MQ v8 Knowledge Center page "Installing and testing the resource adapter in GlassFish Server" it appears you have the wrong property name for the host name and queue manager. Try the following config. Checkout the documentation link above to make sure you have installed the RA and the other steps.
<connector-connection-pool resource-adapter-name="wmq.jmsra" name="jms/testCP" connection-definition-name="javax.jms.ConnectionFactory" transaction-support="XATransaction"></connector-connection-pool>
<connector-resource pool-name="jms/testCP" jndi-name="jms/testCF">
<property name="transportType" value="CLIENT"></property>
<property name="port" value="1415"></property>
<property name="channel" value="CHANNEL1"></property>
<property name="host" value="localhost"></property>
<property name="queueManager" value="testQM"></property>
</connector-resource>
I have found that the article referenced by JoshMC is incorrect. Step 6.f should not form part of the "Connector Resource" (connection factory) configuration, but the "Connector Connection Pool" configuration, i.e. between 5.f and 5.g.
If you create a new connection pool using the Admin Console then it displays many properties that can be populated. The following are the important ones:
channel
port
hostName
queueManager
transportType
username
such that the domain.xml should contain the following:
<connector-connection-pool resource-adapter-name="wmq.jmsra" name="jms/testCP" connection-definition-name="javax.jms.ConnectionFactory" transaction-support="XATransaction">
<property name="channel" value="CHANNEL1"></property>
<property name="port" value="1415"></property>
<property name="hostName" value="localhost"></property>
<property name="queueManager" value="testQM"></property>
<property name="transportType" value="CLIENT"></property>
<property name="username" value="mqm"></property>
</connector-connection-pool>
We found that we used the wrong version of the wmq.jmsra adapter.
We were using 7.5.0.4-p750-004-140807. With a newer Version 8.0.0.8-p800-008-171121 everything worked fine.

Connection fails between MySQL and Spring MVC App

I have really tried to find a solution to this problem - but I can't seem to figure it out. I really hope you guys know what to do.
My Spring MVC application has begun to lose the connection to the database, and I don't know why. It is driving me crazy.
Spring DB setup:
spring.datasource.driverClassName=com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://ip/database-name
spring.jpa.database-platform=org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5Dialect
spring.jpa.show-sql=false
spring.datasource.tomcat.initialSize=5
spring.datasource.tomcat.maxActive=55
spring.datasource.tomcat.maxIdle=21
spring.datasource.tomcat.minIdle=13
spring.datasource.tomcat.testWhileIdle=true
spring.datasource.tomcat.timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis=34000
spring.datasource.tomcat.minEvictableIdleTimeMillis=55000
spring.datasource.tomcat.validationInterval=34000
spring.datasource.tomcat.testOnBorrow=true
spring.datasource.tomcat.validationQuery=SELECT 1
spring.datasource.tomcat.removeAbandoned=true
spring.datasource.tomcat.removeAbandonedTimeout=233
spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=update
I have tried to specify 'autoReconnect=true' because I found answers, that suggested that - but it hasn't solved my problem.

Thanks.
I was facing a similar problem, try 2 things:
Change spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://ip/database-name to spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://ip/database-name?autoReconnect=true
I was using c3p0 in my application, configuring idleConnectionTestPeriod and preferredTestQuery resolved my issue
<!-- DB Configuration -->
<bean id="dataSource" class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource">
<property name="jdbcUrl" value="${jdbc_url}" />
<property name="user" value="${jdbc_username}" />
<property name="password" value="${jdbc_password}" />
<property name="driverClass" value="${jdbc_driver_class}" />
<!-- these are C3P0 properties -->
<property name="acquireIncrement" value="1" /> <!-- Determines how many connections at a time c3p0 will try to acquire when the pool is exhausted. -->
<property name="minPoolSize" value="${jdbc_min_pool_size}" />
<property name="maxPoolSize" value="${jdbc_max_pool_size}" />
<property name="maxIdleTime" value="100" /> <!-- Seconds a Connection can remain pooled but unused before being discarded. Zero means idle connections never expire. -->
<!--set this value less then mysql wait_timeout -->
<property name="idleConnectionTestPeriod" value="100"/> <!-- If this is a number greater than 0, C3P0 will test all idle, pooled but unchecked-out connections, every this number of seconds-->
<property name="preferredTestQuery" value="select 1"/> <!--a query used to test connections-->
</bean>
Your property spring.datasource.tomcat.validationInterval seems to do the same. From the error it seems that MySQL wait_timeout in your case is 60,401,089 ms, so the validationInterval seems less than that, but still try reducing it to 100 and see if the error reoccurs. If that doesn't work try configuring c3p0 and using the config I mentioned.

Openshift Unable to locate persistence units

I'm developing Hibernate JPA persistance web application, with my persistence.xml in src/main/resources/META-INF/persistence.xml (in war file it's in WEB-INF/classes/META-INF). It all works well on local Tomcat server, but when put on Openshift JBoss EWS, getting this message on startup:

and has two persistence units in it. I alse deleted hibernate.cfg.xml, both things suggested in other SO answers. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
Got it.
The problem was I used Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("unit") to create EntityManagerFactory and injected it in other Spring beans.
Now I put
<bean id="emf" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean">
<property name="persistenceUnitName" value="unit" />
</bean>
directly in applicationContext.xml.
Still doesn't explain what was wrong with previous approach, but it works.

Why can't I test my project using JUnit 4?

I am using Spring 3, Hibernate 3 in my project. But I can not test it using JUnit 4.
Here is my Test class:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(locations={"file:WebRoot/WEB-INF/applicationContext.xml"})
public class UserDaoTestCase extends AbstractJUnit4SpringContextTests {
#Autowired
private UserDao userDao;
#Test
public void testSimple() {
// do some tests...
}
// setters and getters
public UserDao getUserDao() {
return userDao;
}
public void setUserDao(UserDao userDao) {
this.userDao = userDao;
}
}
I run this test, and I always get this exception:

My IDE is MyEclipse 9, and I am using JavaEE 6 libraries.
I think my applicationContext.xml is fine, 'cuz it works fine when I run this project in tomcat, no exceptions.
Here is my SessionFactory bean in applicationContext.xml:
<bean id="sessionFactory"
class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean">
<property name="dataSource" ref="c3p0DataSource" />
<property name="packagesToScan">
<list>
<value>com.myproject.entity</value>
</list>
</property>
<property name="hibernateProperties">
<props>
<prop key="hibernate.connection.provider_class">
org.hibernate.connection.C3P0ConnectionProvider
</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">update</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.show_sql">true</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.format_sql">true</prop>
</props>
</property>
</bean>
How can I do tests using JUnit 4 correctly?
I expect you've got the path to the application-context.xml wrong, as Spring sees it. I'd first try dropping off WebRoot/.
I'd attach the Spring sources to my project and hook-up a debugger, breaking on line:
org.springframework.test.context.TestContext.getApplicationContext(TestContext.java:308)
In there, you'll see where it's loading the application context and you can use an interactive expression executer to try multiple different strings to figure out what it can and can't see.
I'd also try this:
#ContextConfiguration(locations = { "classpath*:applicationContext*.xml" })
That work's in my project where the files are in WEB-INF/classes in the deployment.
Do you really use your production applicaton context for tests?
I would change the approach to use a different application context for tests (e.g. for defining test data sources and stuff) and place it along with your other test resources. Then a simple lookup as the following one will do.
#ContextConfiguration("/path/to/my/test-context.xml")
In your example, you have to make sure the path is correct! Your file URL should be translated to a folder relative to your project's root folder. Does the application context lie there?
#ContextConfiguration(locations={"file:WebRoot/WEB-INF/applicationContext.xml"})
I think you do not locate your Spring context configuration file from file:// . re-locate it.
I also had this problem, in my case the problem was with the application context xml configuration file being loaded. It was not a properly defined application context. To be precise, "xmlns:context="http://www.springframework.org/schema/context" namespace was missing.
I too have same problem, When I updated both src/test/resources/ApplicationResource.properties and src/main/resources/ApplicationResource.proerties.
And I updated, POM.xml with context and test dependency
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-context</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
The src/test/resources/ApplicationContext.xml loaded successfully.
My problem got solved.

<connectionSource class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.DataSourceConnectionSource">
<dataSource class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource">
<driverClass>com.mysql.jdbc.Driver</driverClass>
<jdbcUrl>${jdbc.url}</jdbcUrl>
<user>${jdbc.username}</user>
<password>${jdbc.password}</password>
</dataSource>
</connectionSource>
<sqlDialect class="ch.qos.logback.core.db.dialect.MySQLDialect" />`
</appender>
But with no success!
I got this error
java.lang.IllegalStateException: DBAppender cannot function if the
JDBC driver does not support getGeneratedKeys method and without a
specific SQL dialect
The reason was, I have seted a wrong connection URL for DriverManagerConnectionSource. There was no any DB server with that URL. Unfortunately the logback is confusing us with a wrong error message
The problem was that I missed logback-examples-1.0.0.jar
i had a similar error pop up, and it was simply a configuration error.... The "driverClass" was wrong in my xml config file.... I didn't notice right off because I took it from an existing project where I assumed it worked...
So long story short, make sure you're driverClass is:
com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
if you're trying to connect to mysql!
The root cause is right at the bottom of your log snippet:
ERROR in ch.qos.logback.core.joran.spi.Interpreter#14:13 - RuntimeException in Action for tag [appender] java.lang.IllegalStateException: DBAppender cannot function if the JDBC driver does not support getGeneratedKeys method *and* without a specific SQL dialect
You'll have to specify a MySQL dialect in the configuration for DBAppender.
