Tomcat: status code 404 on requests of every application - java

Every application deployed on my Tomcat returns status code 404 on every request I make. I've tried several projects, helloworlds or skeletons and every project behaves the same as others:
Some of the projects I've used:
https://github.com/mwarman/skeleton-ws-spring-boot
https://spring.io/guides/gs/rest-service/ (I can run it with mvn spring-boot:run but it's not working as deployed to Tomcat)
https://github.com/shagstrom/spring-mvc-hibernate-skeleton
I'm using the newest Tomcat8 (8.0.27), Oracle JDK 8. I've also tried Tomcat7 with OpenJDK 7.
Used Tomcats are running on MAC and Debian.
I've build apps via mvn and via Intellij Idea.
Tomcats are clean, no configs are changed (except adding manager-gui user).
Since I've tried many different projects, I don't believe the problem is in the code. Is it in Tomcat's config? How can I get it to work?

If you installed tomcat successfully, you may have seen tomcat main page from browser http://localhost:8080/ URL. (Otherwise, you need to check tomcat installation first.)
I guess you may have built jar by fallowing above sites that you mentioned.
I am wondering whether you applied the jar into your tomcat or not because you mentioned same result from any other projects.
You need to apply jar or war into your tomcat in order to apply java program.
Here are links that I wish they might be helpful to you.
Packaging war : How to make war file in Eclipse
Tomcat - war file deployment : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X9DA8oVodk

If tomcat returns 404 response, you have to check those points:
check if your deploy was correct
check if war bootstrap and its ServletContext initialization has no errors
check if the resource your invoking was successfully exposed.
To test these issues you have to expose:
static resource test
web service resource test
in this way you can exclude the pitfalls you can meet during application deploy

After deployment Tomcat server is not running on port 8443 from Commandline

I have one web project in eclipse. For HTTPS configuration I have made required changes in server.xml File is attached below.
When I run tomcat server from eclipse, It runs on both ports 8080 with HTTP and 8443 with HTTPS.
For deployment I choose not to run tomcat from eclipse, so I took a export of my project with export source files setting enable and put that war file into webapps folder. After doing that when I start tomcat server from command line it starts but runs only on 8080 port not on 8443. So due to that am not able to run my project's url.
May I know please why it is happening that tomcat is not running on 8443 when I'm running from command line ? Eclipse and Command line points to same Tomcat installation folder. So what's wrong happening ?

I encountered a similar problem when I publish a Maven web project after cleaning it in Eclipse.
In my experience, to sovle this problem, you should:
update the Maven project
config build path --> remove unnecessary source folders
make sure web deployment assembly looks like this,remove unnecessary entries
run configurations --> choose Tomcat --> then check Classpath, make sure it looks like it
At last, do not forget to build project.
Works for me. Hope it helps.
Try to look for previous error messages in the log.
In my case for instance there was an error in servlets definition in web.xml.
I had this problem debugging a Web Application under Eclipse.
I had to open every project of web applications deployed on Server Tomcat, and then problem was solved
To see the directory where saving the jar package download by Maven and delete all child directory, then back to eclipse and click update the Maven project.
This is my experience and I succeed by this way.
If you are doing work on the JSP Servlet web application then this issue is caused due to not proper servlet configuration in the web.xml.
It should be proper as follow example
web.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee" xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_3_1.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="3.1">
<display-name>SimpleServletProject</display-name>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>XmlServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.yogi.XmlServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>XmlServlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/xmlservlet</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
</web-app>
In Spring application development I have faced the above problem.
Solution: in the pom.xml file, I added slf4j as a dependency and the problem was resolved.
<dependency>
<groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>jcl-over-slf4j</artifactId>
<version>1.7.12</version>
</dependency>
This issue usually occurs when something is wrong in web.xml.
Check if all class mapping is correctly present.
Example: If filter-mapping is declared, then appropriate filter for the same name should also be declared.
In the case of Spring, check if WebApplicationInitializer is properly defined.
In my case for instance there was an error in servlets definition in web.xml.
then I edited web.xml file and solved it.
I got the same issue,
i. in eclipse right click on the project
ii. select maven option
iii. Click on the Update Project
once the project updated my issue got resolved.
I got same issue due to wrong url-pattern
<url-pattern>*/*</url-pattern>
right :
<url-pattern>/</url-pattern>
Maven update for the project did the trick for me.

Any ideas why it fails to deploy the war file using the manager web UI from tomcat?
I faced the same issue. But after stopping and starting the tomcat server,I uploaded the war file again it is deployed successfully

I cannot reach my running Tomcat 7.50 using a public ip address

I am running a web application on my local tomcat 7.50 server.
The operating system is Mac OS Mavericks.
The web application can be easily access from all computers in the same house if I use the local ip address (for example 192.168.2.153:8089).
The problem is that I cannot access the web application by using the public ip of the machine that runs the Tomcat 7.50 server.
Here is the server.xml file of the tomcat server :
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

You need to set up something known as Port Forwarding through your route (where the server is hosted): Look here: http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-Port-Forwarding-on-a-Router
Be careful because you will be making your computer accessible through the internet.
Also your home ip address in most cases is dynamic (changes from time to time) so make sure you are using the correct ip to access the server. Check out http://www.noip.com/ for a manager ip address.s
You need to assign a public IP (like 119.56.1.78) and you need fo convince your ISP to route traffic bearing that IP to your system. The first part is trivial... use
ip addr add 119.56.1.78 dev eth0
to add that IP to the systemm and use
ip addr del 119.56.1.78 dev eth0
to remove it. Choose the correct IP and interface (maybe not eth0)
As for the second part - not so easy, and don;t try the first part till you get the IP assigngment.
Do you have a home-router - or one built into your ISP modem ? If so it may b assigned that IP. You might remove the router and expose your server to the WAN - BUT there are security issues to consider.
You might configure your local router to forward port 9090 to your local system, (192.168.1.1) and NOT add asecondary IP at all. But without more info no one can guess how.

Tomcat configuration

Well I had Tomcat 6 up ad running for a long time and then all of a sudden I started getting this error message when I try to go to this page: http://localhost:9090
Method GET not implemented (try POST)
Update: after changing my port to 8780 and accessing http://localhost:8780 I just get this in Firefox:
Unable to connect
I have no idea what is wrong, I have reinstalled Tomcat entirely. Any ideas?
All I am trying to do is get the default tomcat page up for now. not actually trying to use a webapp.
server.xml (removed web.xml examples..ive now changed my port to 8780....)
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

Are you sure you're accessing the correct port? This error message is typical for invalid SOAP (XML-RPC) requests, not for invalid HTTP requests. The Tomcat admin pages are usually to be served by HTTP. Check /conf/server.xml to verify port number (or to change it).
Are you also sure that it's Tomcat which listens on that port? Maybe you've installed another server software which hijacked that port from Tomcat. If Windows, check it with netstat.
Edit: as per the update (the "Unable to connect" error after changing the port): are you sure you've configured and started the right Tomcat instance? Maybe you've installed multiple Tomcats in parallel.
