I encountered a similar problem when I publish a Maven web project after cleaning it in Eclipse.
In my experience, to sovle this problem, you should:
update the Maven project
config build path --> remove unnecessary source folders
make sure web deployment assembly looks like this,remove unnecessary entries
run configurations --> choose Tomcat --> then check Classpath, make sure it looks like it
At last, do not forget to build project.

Try to look for previous error messages in the log.
In my case for instance there was an error in servlets definition in web.xml.
I had this problem debugging a Web Application under Eclipse.
I had to open every project of web applications deployed on Server Tomcat, and then problem was solved
To see the directory where saving the jar package download by Maven and delete all child directory, then back to eclipse and click update the Maven project.
This is my experience and I succeed by this way.
If you are doing work on the JSP Servlet web application then this issue is caused due to not proper servlet configuration in the web.xml.

In Spring application development I have faced the above problem.
Solution: in the pom.xml file, I added slf4j as a dependency and the problem was resolved.

This issue usually occurs when something is wrong in web.xml.
Check if all class mapping is correctly present.
Example: If filter-mapping is declared, then appropriate filter for the same name should also be declared.
In the case of Spring, check if WebApplicationInitializer is properly defined.
In my case for instance there was an error in servlets definition in web.xml.
then I edited web.xml file and solved it.
I got the same issue,
i. in eclipse right click on the project
ii. select maven option
iii. Click on the Update Project
once the project updated my issue got resolved.
I got same issue due to wrong url-pattern

I have one web project in eclipse. For HTTPS configuration I have made required changes in server.xml File is attached below.
When I run tomcat server from eclipse, It runs on both ports 8080 with HTTP and 8443 with HTTPS.
For deployment I choose not to run tomcat from eclipse, so I took a export of my project with export source files setting enable and put that war file into webapps folder. After doing that when I start tomcat server from command line it starts but runs only on 8080 port not on 8443. So due to that am not able to run my project's url.
May I know please why it is happening that tomcat is not running on 8443 when I'm running from command line ? Eclipse and Command line points to same Tomcat installation folder. So what's wrong happening ?

Make sure that the "server.xml" in the commandline tomcat instance is identical to the "server.xml" in eclipse.

Hi i get the below error when trying to deploy a war file in tomcat 7:

i tried to restart tomcat but no joy.

Any ideas why it fails to deploy the war file using the manager web UI from tomcat?
I faced the same issue. But after stopping and starting the tomcat server,I uploaded the war file again it is deployed successfully

Reasons may include the following:
In your servlet you use mapping for only 3 types of patterns. May be must be
*.jsp because your screenshot consists only jsp files
You have no welcome page in your web.xml and Tomcat doesn't know about jsp files
your app is called as 'yachtcalendar' (all letters are small) but not yachtCalendar
You can try

Try to remove all blank spaces in your server.xml before <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Well I had Tomcat 6 up ad running for a long time and then all of a sudden I started getting this error message when I try to go to this page: http://localhost:9090

Update: after changing my port to 8780 and accessing http://localhost:8780 I just get this in Firefox:

I have no idea what is wrong, I have reinstalled Tomcat entirely. Any ideas?

Are you sure you're accessing the correct port? This error message is typical for invalid SOAP (XML-RPC) requests, not for invalid HTTP requests. The Tomcat admin pages are usually to be served by HTTP. Check /conf/server.xml to verify port number (or to change it).
Are you also sure that it's Tomcat which listens on that port? Maybe you've installed another server software which hijacked that port from Tomcat. If Windows, check it with netstat.
Edit: as per the update (the "Unable to connect" error after changing the port): are you sure you've configured and started the right Tomcat instance? Maybe you've installed multiple Tomcats in parallel.
