I have a list with RadioButtons. When the user selects an item, AsyncTask should start. I created an interface to send events to the adapter. When the download starts, it should open ProgressDialog. I can't get a reference ProgressDialog after screen rotation. In the logs it says that progressDialog != null and progressDialog.isShowing = true while dialog disappears from the window. How can I retrieve this reference and why the dialogue has retained its state when I turned the screen?
Adapter:
...
convertView.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
final ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(getContext());
dialog.setIndeterminate(false);
dialog.setProgressStyle(ProgressDialog.STYLE_HORIZONTAL);
Log.d(LOG_TAG, getClass().getSimpleName() + ": click ");
checked = position;
notifyDataSetChanged();
if (translationDownloadTask != null) {
translationDownloadTask.cancel(true);
}
translationDownloadTask = new TranslationDownloadTask(translations[position], translations[position]);
translationDownloadTask.setListener(new OnFileDownloadListener() {
#Override
public void onStartDownloading(String title) {
dialog.show();
}
#Override
public void onProgress(String title, int progress) {
dialog.setProgress(progress);
Log.d(LOG_TAG, getClass().getSimpleName() + ": progressDialog " + dialog.isShowing());
}
#Override
public void onDonwloadingComplete() {
}
#Override
public void onError() {
}
});
translationDownloadTask.execute();
}
});
...
AsyncTask:
public class TranslationDownloadTask extends AsyncTask<Void, Integer, Void> {
private static final String LOG_TAG = "myQuranTag";
String url;
String progressDialogTitle;
OnFileDownloadListener listener;
public void setListener(OnFileDownloadListener listener){

}
#Override

OnFileDownloadListener:

I think you should assign dialog to a ProgressDialog before anything
private ProgressDialog dialog;
and change from this one to this one:
final ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(getContext());
to this one:
final ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(getActivity());

Please Help....and Thanks in advance.
You should not call db and network from activity or fragment. Try to learn MVVM architecture and use ViewModel to store the data from db or network. You may put a lot of effort making your app work but it will still lead to crashes (especially after you introduce fragment and call db and API from there). You will need to handle your data state during configuration changes. Listen to this talk and start writing clean code https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlIPTDE274
The error you get is because you pass wrong parameter into adapter constructor ‘new FlowerAdapter((FlowerAdapter.FlowerClickListener) this)’. If you want to pass a listener to the adapter you need to pass the class which implements the listener: either activity - then pass getActivity(), or fragment ‘this’ - then make fragment implement implements FlowerAdapter.FlowerClickListener.Be aware that it can be null when fragment is not attached to activity, eg configuration change.
I'm trying to add images to my listview, which is made from content retrieved from json. For the purpose of adding the images I'm trying to use picasso, and I've watched a tutorial about it and it worked, the problem is that I don't think it can be used in my app, at least not with the method I saw.
Here's my code, hope anyone can help me and explain me how to do this.

I have a register activity in my application. This has inputs of userid,email,password and mobile no. I have created an UI.
code:
public class RegisterActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
TextView already;
Button signUp;
RelativeLayout parent;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_register);
parent = (RelativeLayout)findViewById(R.id.parentPanel);
setupUI(parent);
already = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.alreadyRegistered);
signUp = (Button) findViewById(R.id.sign_up_button);
already.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
startActivity(new Intent(RegisterActivity.this,LoginActivity.class));
}
});
signUp.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
startActivity(new Intent(RegisterActivity.this,LoginActivity.class));
}
});
}
public static void hideSoftKeyboard(Activity activity) {
InputMethodManager inputMethodManager = (InputMethodManager) activity.getSystemService(Activity.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE);
inputMethodManager.hideSoftInputFromWindow(activity.getCurrentFocus().getWindowToken(), 0);
}
public void setupUI(View view) {
//Set up touch listener for non-text box views to hide keyboard.
if(!(view instanceof EditText)) {
view.setOnTouchListener(new View.OnTouchListener() {
public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) {
hideSoftKeyboard(RegisterActivity.this);
return false;
}
});
}
//If a layout container, iterate over children and seed recursion.
if (view instanceof ViewGroup) {
for (int i = 0; i < ((ViewGroup) view).getChildCount(); i++) {
View innerView = ((ViewGroup) view).getChildAt(i);
setupUI(innerView);
}
}
}
}
Now I want to sync this UI with server.
For this I have a code of asyncTask created in another activity. How can I call this code or implement this code with UI?

}
}
#Override

super.onPostExecute(jsonObject);
Log.d("ServerResponse", jsonObject.toString());
try {
int result = jsonObject.getInt("result");
String message = jsonObject.getString("message");
if ( result == 1 ) {
Toast.makeText(context, message, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
//Code for having successful result for register api goes here

//Code when api fails goes here
}
} catch(JSONException je) {

In this dialog want to show events from asyncTask. Thank you.
Not sure if i understand your question correctly, but to execute the AsyncTask, you just have to create an instance of RegisterAsyncTask and call the execute() method on it.
RegisterAsyncTask task = new RegisterAsyncTask();
task.execute(yourMap);
// you can pass multiple params to the execute() method
Or, if you don't need to get ahold of the instance:
new RegisterAsyncTask().execute(yourMap);
You can simply put your hashmap object, alongwith AsyncTask in your login activity code, and simply call AsyncTask in following manner.
HashMap<String, String> params = new HashMap<String, String>();
params.put("userUsername", "user1");
params.put("userPassword", "user1");
params.put("gender", "M");
params.put("birthDate", "1986/7/12");

//call asynctask like this.
RegisterAsyncTask task = new RegisterAsyncTask();
task.execute(params);
In my android app, i am doing time consuming task extending AsyncTask, and want to display the progress in Toast messages. Toast messages are also displayed onPre() and onPost().
I am able to display Toast messages onPre() & onPost() but not able to show onProgressUpdate(Integer... progress).
Following is my code...
public class MainClass extends Activity {
public void Start(View view) {
DemoTasks runner = new DemoTasks(this);
runner.execute("Start");
}
private class DemoTasks extends AsyncTask<String, Integer, Integer> {
private Context context;
public DemoTasks(Context context){
this.context = context;
}
#Override
protected Integer doInBackground(String... params) {
try {
publishProgress(0);
doWork();
Thread.sleep(5000L);
publishProgress(100);
} catch (Exception localException) {
Log.d("POST", localException.getMessage());
}
return 100;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(Integer result) {
Toast.makeText(context, "post", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
Toast.makeText(context, "pre", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
#Override
protected void onProgressUpdate(Integer... progress) {
super.onProgressUpdate(progress);
Toast.makeText(context, "progress-" + progress, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
}
Also in my doInBackgroud(String...params) ...Thread.sleep is also not working.
As soon as onPre() gets executed, onPost() also executes after that!!!!
You can try this,
showProgress ();
new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
dialog.cancel();
Intent i=new Intent(getApplicationContext(),Main.class);
startActivity(i);
finish();
}
}, 3000); //number of seconds
private ProgressDialog dialog;
public void showProgress () {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(this);
dialog.setCancelable(true);
dialog.setMessage("Please wait");
dialog.show();}
Bascially,you can access the UI on any method, even In doinBackground you can access the UI using runOnUIthread.
here is one AsyncTask Example. This will show a peogress dialog while executing the task.
private class LoginProcessing extends AsyncTask<Object, Void, Void> {
private LoginCredentials myLoginCredentials;
private ProgressDialog progressDialog;
public LoginProcessing(LoginCredentials Credentials) {
super();
myLoginCredentials=Credentials;
progressDialog.setMax(100);
progressDialog.setMessage("Please Wait..");
progressDialog.setProgressStyle(ProgressDialog.STYLE_HORIZONTAL);
progressDialog.setProgress(0);
progressDialog.show();
}
protected void onPreExecute (){
}
#Override
protected Void doInBackground(Object... arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
//Code to do the process in background
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onProgressUpdate(Long... progress) {
// int percent = (int)(100.0*(double)progress[0]/mFileLen + 0.5);
progressDialog.setProgress(progress);
}
protected void onPostExecute(Void result){
progressDialog.dismiss();
//Your code after the process
}
}
You can call this Task as,
new LoginProcessing(loginCredentials).execute();
In this Example loginCredentials is the parameter I am passing to the AsyncTask. You can change it to your own parameter.
In my program through AsynchTask collecting data from server and wait for user choice from the data via spinner(AlertDialog.Builder is used to display data in spinner format).
My code is :
public class Splash extends Activity {
protected boolean _active = true;
protected int _splashTime = 1500;
protected long startTime = 0;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.splash);
startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
new InitialSetAsync().execute();
}
private class InitialSetAsync extends AsyncTask<String, Integer, String> {
#Override
protected String doInBackground(String... params) {
InitialSetting ins = new InitialSetting(Splash.this);
ins.doInitialSetting();
try {
while ((System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime) < _splashTime) {
Thread.sleep(100);
}
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
super.onPostExecute(result);
Intent intent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(),
MainActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
Splash.this.finish();
}
}
}
Data displaying portion as in spinner format:
public class InitialSetting {
private Context context;
DbTransaction dbTran;
Process checkProcess;
String userCountry;
String country = "";
String[] availableCountries;
int flag=0;
public InitialSetting(Context context) {
this.context = context;
}
public int doInitialSetting() {
checkProcess = new Process();
String hasVisit = checkProcess.retrieveFromPreference(context);
if (hasVisit.equals("true")) {
} else {
availableCountries = checkProcess.checkAvailableCountries();
final AlertDialog.Builder ab = new AlertDialog.Builder(context);
((Activity) context).runOnUiThread(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
ab.setSingleChoiceItems(availableCountries, -1,
new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog,
int whichButton) {
country = availableCountries[whichButton];
if (!country.equals("") && country != null) {
Configuration.setCounty(country);
checkProcess.copyDatabaseFromServer(
country, context);
dbTran.storePreference(country);
dialog.cancel();
}
}
});
ab.show();
}
});
}
return 0;
}
}
In my case, the thread is running before the user select the value from Spinner and cause error. How to pause Asynch task till the user select the values.
