Your recyclerView is null.
Because the RecyclerView is only added when fragment_home.xml is loaded to your activity.
That mean it is ready after (assuming your DefaultFragment is inflate fragment_home.xml)
Fragment fragment = null;
fragment = new DefaultFragment();
FragmentManager fragmentManager = getSupportFragmentManager();
FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction = fragmentManager.beginTransaction();
fragmentTransaction.replace(R.id.root, fragment);
fragmentTransaction.commit();
You should do the findViewById after that.
However, fragmentTransaction.commit(); is an async process. The fragment content may not be available immediately after that.
So, you will need to call fragmentTransaction.commitNow() to make sure the fragment is added to activity.
recyclerView = (RecyclerView) findViewById(R.id.movies_recycler_view);
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(this));
It is not a very good idea to find fragment's view from the activity level. One of the reason is to avoid the situation like you are facing now as fragment content cannot be guaranteed in activity.
The better way is to find and set view content inside the fragment onViewCreated
If your data is get from activity, you can still pass the data to fragment from activity.
See, topics like "communication between fragment and activity"
https://developer.android.com/training/basics/fragments/communicating.html
recyclerView = (RecyclerView) findViewById(R.id.movies_recycler_view);
// The above line doesnot throw null pointer exception, since you can cast null to any object. Refer this post - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18723596/no-exception-while-type-casting-with-a-null-in-java
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(this));
// The above line will throw null pointer exception, since here we are accessing the null object and invoking a method on that null object.
Try like this to avoid the null pointer exception
recyclerView = (RecyclerView) findViewById(R.id.movies_recycler_view);
if(recyclerView != null) {
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(this));
.....
.....
.....
}
Either move fragment_home.xml code inside your main.xml file, If you want recyclerView inside your activity. i.e.
main.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/root"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView
android:id="#+id/movies_recycler_view"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:scrollbars="vertical" />
</FrameLayout>
</LinearLayout>
OR
add a Fragment to your activity which inflates fragment_home.xml and move recyclerView initialization code to your fragment. i.e. Below code in your fragment:
recyclerView = (RecyclerView) rootview.findViewById(R.id.movies_recycler_view);
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(this));
Related
all. I'm having a problem.
I am trying to make an application, wherein a navigation-drawer is the source of navigation. In this application, I have some fragments with activities. The problem is, that if I run my profile fragment (which have uses tablayout and recyclerview) in an application for itself, it works. The application when it runs in it's own application.
However, when I attempt to add it to an application, wherein it should be a fragment in a navigation drawer, the application can compile, but when I click on the menuitem in the emulator, it crashes.
I will add the code I have at the moment:

The code in it's entirety: https://github.com/CabCabz/SustainablyProblem.git
suggestion:
I analyzed your code, you should not used default navigation drawer setup with mobile_navigation.xml.
Setup drawer menu without mobile_navigation.xml: https://stackoverflow.com/a/67389269/12660050
Solution:
1) As you are using default drawer with mobile_navigation.xml you do not need to
use onNavigationItemSelected() method. So, before doing anything remove it from
your Main Activity.
2) Go to the mobile_navigation.xml file and change tag name fragment to activity in which you are using as a MainActivityProfile.java.
Before:
<fragment
android:id="#+id/nav_myprofile"
android:name="com.example.sustainably.ui.myprofile.profileRecycle.MyProfileFragment"
android:label="#string/menu_myprofile"
tools:layout="#layout/fragment_myprofile" />
After:
<activity
android:id="#+id/nav_myprofile"
android:name="com.example.sustainably.ui.myprofile.profileRecycle.MyProfileFragment"
android:label="#string/menu_myprofile"
tools:layout="#layout/fragment_myprofile" />
By changing only this you can solve your problem!!
I have created a navigation drawer and added a tablayout like this
activity_main
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:openDrawer="start">
<include
layout="#layout/app_bar_main"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/nav_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
app:headerLayout="#layout/nav_header_main"
app:menu="#menu/activity_main_drawer" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
app_bar_main
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay">

android:id="#+id/toolbar"

android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:tabMode="fixed"
app:tabGravity="fill"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
app:tabSelectedTextColor="#fffaf0"/>
</android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout>
<include layout="#layout/content_main" />
<android.support.v4.view.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/viewpager"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" />
<android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
android:id="#+id/fab"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom|end"
android:layout_margin="#dimen/fab_margin"
app:srcCompat="#android:drawable/ic_dialog_email" />
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
I get the result shown below:
However, I tried to add fragments to the tabs so that each navigate item opens a screen that has two tabs "First Semester" and "Second Semester" whose contents are held in the fragments xml but its not working.

The code above binds the FirstSemester() and SecondSemester() fragments to all the navigation items. This may not be the right way to go about it, so I need suggestions and help, thanks.
Secondly
How do I change the AppBar title to the title of the Navigation item selected?
Secondly How do I change the AppBar title to the title of the
Navigation item selected?
In the onNavigationItemSelected() method in your MainActivity class.. you can do something like this:
#SuppressWarnings("StatementWithEmptyBody")
#Override
public boolean onNavigationItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle navigation view item clicks here.
int id = item.getItemId();
if (id == R.id.year1) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle("Year 1");
setupViewPager(viewPager);
} else if (id == R.id.year2) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle("Year 2");
setupViewPager2(viewPager);
} else if (id == R.id.year3) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle("Year 3");
setupViewPager3(viewPager);
} else if (id == R.id.year4) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle("Year 4");
setupViewPager4(viewPager);
} else if (id == R.id.year5) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle("Year 5");
setupViewPager5(viewPager);
} else if (id == R.id.nav_share) {
} else if (id == R.id.nav_send) {
}
DrawerLayout drawer = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
drawer.closeDrawer(GravityCompat.START);
return true;
}
As for your first question, you are displaying a viewpager (first and second semester) for any item clicked in the navigation drawer so you shouldn't be expecting a normal-looking code. Crude method though but it's not too poor in efficiency.
I hope this helps.. Merry coding!
If you want to first create YearOne fragment and add the semesters to each Year then you first need to add your YearOne, YearTwo etc fragments to the navigation drawer menu.
I created a simple app to illustrate this some days back https://github.com/mbobiosio/TabLayout
You can attach your TabLayout simply like this in YearOneFragment
mViewPager.setAdapter(new FragmentsAdapter(getChildFragmentManager(), getActivity()));
mTabLayout.setupWithViewPager(mViewPager);
mTabLayout.addOnTabSelectedListener(new TabLayout.OnTabSelectedListener() {
#Override
public void onTabSelected(TabLayout.Tab tab) {
mViewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabUnselected(TabLayout.Tab tab) {
mViewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
#Override
public void onTabReselected(TabLayout.Tab tab) {
mViewPager.setCurrentItem(tab.getPosition());
}
});
I will share what i used in my application. You can reuse the single fragment. Have a look at this
Mainactivity.java
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity
implements NavigationView.OnNavigationItemSelectedListener
{
private Toolbar toolbar;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
toolbar = findViewById(R.id.toolbar);
setSupportActionBar(toolbar);
setTitle(R.string.app_name); //Toolbar title at start.
}
#Override
public boolean onNavigationItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle navigation view item clicks here.
int id = item.getItemId();
Fragment fragment;
if (id == R.id.year1) {
fragment = new YearFragment(); //Root Fragment then add semester fragment.
loadFragment(fragment);
Bundle data = new Bundle();
data.putString("YEAR","FIRST YEAR"); //Pass year value
fragment.setArguments(data);
toolbar.setTitle("FIRST YEAR");
}
if (id == R.id.year2) {
fragment = new YearFragment();//If your view for fragment is different then create new fragment and change here.
loadFragment(fragment);
Bundle data = new Bundle();
data.putString("YEAR","SECOND YEAR"); //Pass year value
fragment.setArguments(data);
toolbar.setTitle("SECOND YEAR");
}
.
.
.
. //Add upto required navigation items.
}
private void loadFragment(Fragment fragment) {
// load fragment

transaction.replace(R.id.frame_container, fragment);
transaction.commit();
}

Please help me to solve this so i can change fragment when menu on navigation drawer is clicked.
Try to call the openFragment() in the onItemTouchListener of the recycler view. Before loading the fragment try to close the drawer and then call the openFragment(). I think it should work. Also check whether the container id is correct.
Ok, so I have an activity and a fragment. In my activity there is a NavigationDrawer and and card view. I would like to click the menu item to go to Fragment. This works -partially. It loads the fragment - but instead of replacing the content inside activity it loads both cardview and fragment. How do I resolve this? Below is my code:

You can try setting the cardView visibility to View.GONE after you load the fragment.
EDIT
Try hiding the parent linear layout of the cardview instead of the cardview itself, the one that doesnt have an ID
I have an activity which displays an AppToolbar alongside a RecyclerView which is located below the Toolbar. Every row of the RecyclerView is a CardView. My problem is that the RecyclerView doesn't scroll at all. It seems that it doesn't receive any gesture callbacks.
Here is my main layout xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
android:background="#color/colorActivityBackground"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/rv"
android:scrollbarAlwaysDrawVerticalTrack="true"
android:scrollbars="vertical"
android:fadeScrollbars="true"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior"/>
<include layout="#layout/tool_bar" />
<include layout="#layout/nav_drawer_layout" />
<android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
android:id="#+id/fab"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="#dimen/fab_margin"
android:src="#drawable/ic_add"
app:layout_anchor="#id/rv"
app:layout_anchorGravity="bottom|end" />
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
Edit: Here is the tool bar code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout android:id="#+id/app_bar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"

xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:elevation="4dp"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay"
app:layout_collapseMode="pin"
app:popupTheme="#style/AppTheme.PopupOverlay" />
</android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout>
Here is also my nav drawer layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
