How do I setup my drawerlayout programmatically to show up in my app in android studio?

I have setup two xml pages in my app, one is the activity_main.xml while the other is my side_menu.xml which I added the drawerlayout to it, this is the code in my side_menu.xml:

What code do I need to add in my MainActivity.java class for this navigation menu to work properly and show up in my app? I can't figure out how to do it.

How can I add recycler view and drawer layout in same activity?

I am trying to implement navigation drawer in my main activity for user navigation. But in the main page i want recycler view to populate the data I have in my database. How can I design XML layout to support both recycler view and navigation drawer.

Overlapping activity layouts in navigation drawer xml

In your appbar.xml, use LinearLayout as root layout with vertical orientation.

Toolbar is Showing inside the navigation bar

Toolbar is not shown in the main layout it shows in the navigation bar.

Using CoordinatorLayout with TabsLayout in fragments and NavigationDrawer in the enclosing Activity

I would like to follow the Google Play navigation design in my application.
I thought it should be pretty straight-forward, but unfortunately Android Studio doesn't offer such a built-in layout. I could not find a detailed example that implements that either. However I found dozens of third-party libraries about that, but the implementation varies too much and it looks like that there is no consensus.
I would like to get a NavigationDrawer whuch opens from the left, and based on what you click on the NavigationDrawer menu, I would also like to have tabbed fragment(Implemented with TabsLayout and ViewPager in the Fragment) on click of the first NavigationDrawer item (under the toolbar).

The only problem is that the ActionBar/Toolbar now is elevated. To fix this when I display the Fragment with the TabLayout (not all my Fragments have a TabLayout), I use:
