How do I setup my drawerlayout programmatically to show up in my app in android studio?

I have setup two xml pages in my app, one is the activity_main.xml while the other is my side_menu.xml which I added the drawerlayout to it, this is the code in my side_menu.xml:

What code do I need to add in my MainActivity.java class for this navigation menu to work properly and show up in my app? I can't figure out how to do it.

How to remove dark bar on navigation drawer

I created a navigation drawer using android studio builtin feature.After that i removed unwanted things from it.But,I could n't possible to remove this bar from the navigation drawer.I tried many ways including changing elevation to 0 dp,etc.
If anyone knows the exact problem and solution please help me fast....

Overlapping activity layouts in navigation drawer xml

this is the first app I program and I have the following problem: My activity_navigation_drawer looks as follows:

In this xml file I included my appbar and the content I will add under this addbar. Unfortunatelly the content overlaps the entire appbar(In other words, the two layouts I did include are overlapping)

In your appbar.xml, use LinearLayout as root layout with vertical orientation.

FYI, you can also use android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout for some extra features.

Toolbar is Showing inside the navigation bar

Toolbar is not shown in the main layout it shows in the navigation bar.

FrameLayout pushing NavigationDrawer action bar up and out

I am trying to achieve a very standard material design layout for my android app. I have a navigation drawer, tabs and floating action button. Each of my fragments should therefore appear in the center of the layout, without overlapping or pushing anything out of the way. When I include my FrameLayout with it's default fragment open, it pushes the ActionBar (or title bar, whatever) higher and off the screen. My actual java mainly runs fragment transactions and doesn't mess with the layout.
If I exclude the FrameLayout fragment_container then the layout acts as normal.
Here is a screenshot. There is meant to be text reading "Material App" above the tab layout.
