How to fix MockitoExtension.class not resolved error - java

I have recently migrated from JUnit4 to JUnit5. I have updated and edited my POM files (multiple POMs because my project is a multi-maven project).
It seems that my IDE (IntellIj Idea) is resolving JUnit 5 annotations. They are all available and functional.
But, when I am trying to annotate OwnerSDJpaServiceTest with #ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class), IntellIj keeps telling me that it
"cannot resolve symbol 'MockitoExtension'.
To me, it looks like I am missing some dependencies but I have looked
at youtube videos and some documentations and it looks all good to me. So I don't know where might the real problem be.
Maybe I am missing a dependency or I have a misconfigured POM files.
If you need to see the whole app please use this link to my GitHub repo.
Here is my root pom file:

Here is my test class (which has the problem of not resolved symbol in MockitoExtension.class):
package guru.springframework.sfgpetclinic.services.springdatajpa;
import guru.springframework.sfgpetclinic.repositories.OwnerRepository;
import guru.springframework.sfgpetclinic.repositories.PetRepository;
import guru.springframework.sfgpetclinic.repositories.PetTypeRepository;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.BeforeEach;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.Test;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtendWith;
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.*;
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class OwnerSDJpaServiceTest {
OwnerRepository ownerRepository;
PetRepository petRepository;
PetTypeRepository petTypeRepository;
OwnerSDJpaService service;
#BeforeEach
void setUp() {
}
#Test
void findByLastName() {
}
#Test
void findAll() {
}
#Test
void findById() {
}
#Test
void save() {
}
#Test
void delete() {
}
#Test
void deleteById() {
}
}
I expect that the annotation is reckognized by IntellIj so I can test this class using JUnit5.

I had the same problem in a simple test project and it turned out that I have only added the core artifact:
org.mockito:mockito-core
and I also needed to add the one that contains the extension for jUnit5:
org.mockito:mockito-junit-jupiter

In my pom.xml (I left to the version if is already used for other dependency).
<dependency>
<groupId>org.mockito</groupId>
<artifactId>mockito-junit-jupiter</artifactId>
</dependency>
But, still the class was not found.!
In my class I was testing with:
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtendWith;
#ExtendWith(org.mockito.junit.jupiter.MockitoExtension.class)
public class MyClassTest {
//...
}
And it stopped asking for the import....
Then, I put manually the import, then Secondary Click -> Source -> Organize Imports.
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtendWith;
import org.mockito.junit.jupiter.MockitoExtension;
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
public class MyClassTest {
//...
}

Add this to your test folder as MokitoExtension.java
package com.pluralsight.tddjunit5;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtensionContext;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtensionContext.Namespace;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ExtensionContext.Store;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ParameterContext;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.ParameterResolver;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.extension.TestInstancePostProcessor;
import org.mockito.Mock;
import org.mockito.MockitoAnnotations;
import java.lang.reflect.Parameter;
import static org.mockito.Mockito.mock;
public class MockitoExtension
implements TestInstancePostProcessor, ParameterResolver {
#Override
public void postProcessTestInstance(Object testInstance,
ExtensionContext context) {
MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(testInstance);
}
#Override
public boolean supportsParameter(ParameterContext parameterContext,
ExtensionContext extensionContext) {
return parameterContext.getParameter().isAnnotationPresent(Mock.class);
}
#Override
public Object resolveParameter(ParameterContext parameterContext,
ExtensionContext extensionContext) {
return getMock(parameterContext.getParameter(), extensionContext);
}
private Object getMock(Parameter parameter,
ExtensionContext extensionContext) {
Class<?> mockType = parameter.getType();
Store mocks = extensionContext
.getStore(Namespace.create(MockitoExtension.class, mockType));
String mockName = getMockName(parameter);
if (mockName != null) {
return mocks.getOrComputeIfAbsent(mockName,
key -> mock(mockType, mockName));
} else {
return mocks.getOrComputeIfAbsent(mockType.getCanonicalName(),
key -> mock(mockType));
}
}
private String getMockName(Parameter parameter) {
String explicitMockName = parameter.getAnnotation(Mock.class).name()
.trim();
if (!explicitMockName.isEmpty()) {
return explicitMockName;
} else if (parameter.isNamePresent()) {
return parameter.getName();
}
return null;
}
}

I had the same problem with Gradle. The MockitoExtension class is actually in the mockito-junit-jupiter.jar file, therefore mockito-core is not required. See the screen clipping below:
Here is a screen clipping of my Gradle file:
Here is a link on an article that might help: https://www.vogella.com/tutorials/Mockito/article.html

If you are working with Junit5, you need to include this dependency org.mockito:mockito-junit-jupiter.
However, with Junit4, you don't need to use this extension and can achieve the same mocking behaviour by using Junit4's #RunWith and MockitoJUnitRunner.class. But in Junit5, there are no rules and runners. hence you cannot use #RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class) or Rules in Junit5.

I have solved that problem by editing my web pom.xml file to look like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

For Spring Module, When I reload all maven projects from IntelliJ, it successfully resolve all dependencies but for SpringBootLocalstack if I remove "version" tag from pom file it failed to resolve, Example:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.amazonaws</groupId>
<artifactId>aws-java-sdk-core</artifactId>
</dependency>
I am getting:
Cannot resolve com.amazonaws:aws-java-sdk-core:unknown
I don't want to mention any specific version here. Now my questions are:
why sometimes maven can resolve dependencies like the above "Spring" Module and sometimes can't?(SpringBootLocalstack module where I didn't mention version no)
How can we achieve compatibility safety for our maven dependencies? Is there any plugin (already tried dependency analyzer and version maven plugin but no luck)
How can we upgrade our old project to new maven dependencies without breaking the existing project feature?
Thanks in advance.
You have declared 'org.springframework.boot' as the parent module of both modules. So if some jars and artifacts like 'com.amazonaws' do not exist in 'org.springframework.boot', they won't be resolved in your project. These dependencies are not announced in 'Spring' module in your project and whatever you have declared in it, can be found in 'org.springframework.boot', then resolved. If you do not declare a 'version' tag in your pom, I guess the version of the parent (here 2.6.1) will be considered for your module version.
I think BOM (Bill of Materials) may come into rescue. If we use BOM, we don't need to specify version numbers each time we add dependencies under same parent POM. For example:
<!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.amazonaws/aws-java-sdk-bom -->
<dependency>
<groupId>com.amazonaws</groupId>
<artifactId>aws-java-sdk-bom</artifactId>
<version>1.12.138</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>

There are APIs in project A that return JSON object. But in integration tests they are returning data in XML format causing them to fail. And this happens only when library B is used in A. If we remove B from A, then all tests pass.
This is the error message:
org.json.JSONException: Unparsable JSON string: <ResponseDTO>.....</ResponseDTO>
My guess is that there is some kind of conflict with dependencies of both projects. But not able to pin point which dependency exactly.
My guess is that as spring uses jackson to convert returning objects into json and there is a dependency in project B, it could have something to do with this library specifically:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.fasterxml.jackson.dataformat</groupId>
<artifactId>jackson-dataformat-xml</artifactId>
<version>2.9.8</version>
</dependency>
But I'm not able to understand how would this affect anything. Let me know if some more information is needed.
EDIT 1: Adding code for controller:
TestDTO.java
#Data // lombok annotation
public class TestDTO {
#JsonProperty(value = "id")
#JsonSetter(nulls = Nulls.AS_EMPTY)
private String id;
#JsonProperty(value = "name")
#JsonSetter(nulls = Nulls.AS_EMPTY)
private String name;
}
TestController.java
#RestController
public class TestController {
#Autowired
private final TestService testService;
#GetMapping("/test/:id")
public TestDTO get(#PathVariable String id) {
return testService.get(id);
}
}
**EDIT 2: ** Added request response headers
Request
HTTP Method = GET
Request URI = /test/1
Parameters = {}
Headers = [Content-Type:"application/json", Content-Length:"616"]
Body = <no character encoding set>
Session Attrs = {}
Response
Status = 200
Error message = null
Headers = [Content-Type:"application/xml;charset=UTF-8"]
Content type = application/xml;charset=UTF-8
Body = <TestDTO>...</TestDTO>
It might be, because Spring Boot picks up the xml-parsing lib through dependency B.
I would either define the produces attribute in your mappings or configure a WebMvcConfigurer to set json as the default type.
To do so, add a WebMvcConfigurer somewhere. Even in dependency B should be fine, if it is running in the same Spring context. This is for Spring Boot 2.4.2:
#Bean
public WebMvcConfigurer customConfigurer() {
return new WebMvcConfigurer() {
#Override
public void configureContentNegotiation(ContentNegotiationConfigurer configurer) {
configurer.defaultContentType(MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON);
}
};
}

The parent pom of your Business Module is "Spring-Boot"? Is that correct? It should have been your " Parent" Module.

Using Maven and Spring and Apache Spark in IntelliJ cause error

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.PropertySource;
#Configuration
#SpringBootApplication
#PropertySource("application.properties")
public class myMainClass{
public static void main(String[] args) {
SpringApplication.run(myMainClass.class, args);
}
}
In stackoverflow, there are a lot of questions about not finding main class, and I tested almost all of them but does not help, Of course the other questions are not about not finding main class after adding spark dependency. So be sure that, this question is not duplicate.
After a long time searching and testing I could not solve it!
As #khmarbaise said, I have changed the pom.xml as follows:

And by going to the project folder and using mvn clean package in it, the problem was solved.

Cucumber and Spring boot integration has error

Spring boot and cucumber integration, when I do package this project become jar use mvn package command and produce advvic-1.0.jar. But, if I run this jar
java -jar target/advvic-1.0.jar
I get this error :
Caused by: cucumber.runtime.CucumberException: No backends were found. Please make sure you have a backend module on your CLASSPATH.
However, if I extract this jar, I found cucumber-java.jar on lib folder
this my pom :

I had the exact same problem with a Spring Boot application that I wanted to use as a runner for Cucumber tests.
The problem is that Spring Boot repackages everything in its own way, thus making it hard for the default Cucumber ResourceLoaders to locate any cucumber.runtime.Backend classes as well as feature files and step definitions.
What I ended up doing was to implement a custom cucumber.runtime.io.ResourceLoader using Spring specific classes to search the classpath.
I got the idea for that at https://stackoverflow.com/a/17283721/3216618
PathMatchingResourcePatternResolver resolver = new PathMatchingResourcePatternResolver();
String locationPattern = ... use path and suffix to
Resource[] resources = resolver.getResources(locationPattern);
Finally you need to create an Iterable from the found org.springframework.core.io.Resource[]
Maybe this can help you:
<plugin>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<requiresUnpack>
<dependency>
<groupId>info.cukes</groupId>
<artifactId>cucumber-java</artifactId>
</dependency>
</requiresUnpack>
</configuration>
</plugin>
