Kotlin + Java 9 modules (Java 11 in use) + maven - java

I've created a simple project with Java and Kotlin code, and I'm trying to compile it as Java 9 module.
Here is my pom.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">

</jdk>
</toolchains>
</configuration>
</plugin>
</plugins>
</build>
</project>
And here is my module-info.java:
module simple.kotlin.module {
requires kotlin.stdlib;
}
I'm not presenting my code files -- they are as simple as possible, java one contains main method and depends on kotlin one.
I'm getting an exception:
[ERROR] Failed to execute goal org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-maven-plugin:1.3.72:compile (compile) on project simple-kotlin-module: Compilation failure
[ERROR] Module java.base cannot be found in the module graph
I'm using maven 3.6.3, run with Java 1.8.0_211, so I have to use maven-toolchain-plugin to select java 11.

I have just had a similar problem. If you want modules in Kotlin, the solution is to avoid Java 9 modules and use Kotlin's own native module functionality! Here is the the documentation from the Kotlin team - https://kotlinlang.org/docs/visibility-modifiers.html#modules

How to add a scala dependency to a Java project in intelliJ that use maven

I want to use a scala dependency in a pure Java project. There is no need to write scala in my project but of course I will have to use classes/etc defined in the scala project that I add as a dependency. Want to do this in a intelliJ maven project.
My pom looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">
<modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
<groupId>com.xxx</groupId>
<artifactId>xxxx</artifactId>
<version>1.0-SNAPSHOT</version>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>group ID</groupId>
<artifactId>scala dependancy</artifactId>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</project>
Although I dont see any errors in pom, intellij is unable to import packages defined in the scala library. Essentially it cant find them.
What am I doing wrong here?
You can do so by adding the following dependency to your pom.xml file:
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.scala-lang</groupId>
<artifactId>scala-library</artifactId>
<version>2.11.7</version>
</dependency>

</plugin>
<!-- This plugin adds all dependencies to JAR file during 'package' command.

maven project which has both java and scala

I want to build a maven project which has both java and scala source code.
I have installed scala IDE plugin in eclipse and added the "scala-maven-plugin" in pom.xml but the imports of java classes in the scala files are giving compilation errors.
Which is the best IDE to build such mixed projects?
The project structure is
The pom.xml

It seems from your code structure that your Scala classes depend on Java, not the other way around. Yet in your Maven config, Scala gets compiled first. Change it to compile after Java classes.
The following plugin sequence works in my project:
<build>
<plugins>
<plugin>
<artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<source>1.8</source>
<target>1.8</target>
</configuration>

<goals>
<goal>single</goal>
</goals>
</execution>
</executions>
</plugin>
</plugins>
</build>
Its safest to go straight to the page provided by the scala-maven-plugin docs where you can find the current pom definition which supports dependencies in both directions

Why is my Maven project packaging test files?

I have a Maven project which I'm trying to package, but I've noticed that all my Java test classes (but none of my Scala test classes) and generated Avro test classes are ending up in the jar.
Folder structure looks fine:
I also noticed that if I add junit as a dependency with <scope>test</scope>, my tests won't compile as it can't find the junit classes, so it looks like Maven is treating all my code including tests as being part of main.

Figured it out.
The issue was with the avro-maven-plugin.
It's configuration had sourceDirectory and outputDirectory, both of which had test source paths.
<configuration>
<sourceDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/test/resources/</sourceDirectory>
<outputDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/test/java</outputDirectory>
</configuration>
Apparently these were interfering with the compiler plugin which thought that these directories were main source directories and compiled them along with the rest of the main classes. This also explains why my tests were failing to compile when the junit dependency was given a test scope.
The solution was to use testSourceDirectory and testOutputDirectory instead:
<configuration>
<testSourceDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/test/resources/</testSourceDirectory>
<testOutputDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/test/java</testOutputDirectory>
</configuration>
mvn clean install -Dmaven.test.skip=true -X

Scala Eclipse IDE compiler giving errors until "clean" is run

I am writing a mixed Java/Scala project and my Eclipse compiler is giving errors for all of the Scala code. It seems to try to compile it as Java instead of Scala. However, when I run a clean, all of the errors go away. Also, building this using maven works completely fine.
I am building this project in Maven. Originally this project was only Java, so I added the necessary plugins/dependencies into my pom.xml.
Any idea why Eclipse is treating my Scala files as Java?

How do you compile Java+Kotlin project using Maven?

I'm trying to compile maven project which has Kotlin classes referencing Java classes. Here's a part of my parent POM:
...
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<artifactId>kotlin-stdlib</artifactId>
<version>${kotlin.version}</version>
</dependency>
...
<plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
<version>${compiler-plugin-version}</version>
<configuration>
<source>${java-version}</source>
<target>${java-version}</target>
<encoding>${project.build.sourceEncoding}</encoding>
</configuration>
</plugin>
<plugin>
<artifactId>kotlin-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<version>${kotlin.plugin.version}</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>compile</id>
<phase>process-sources</phase>
<goals>
<goal>compile</goal>
</goals>
</execution>
<execution>
<id>test-compile</id>
<phase>process-test-sources</phase>
<goals>
<goal>test-compile</goal>
</goals>
</execution>
</executions>
<configuration>
<scanForAnnotations>false</scanForAnnotations>
</configuration>
</plugin>
And related parts of the child POM:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<artifactId>kotlin-stdlib</artifactId>
</dependency>
...
<plugin>
<artifactId>kotlin-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<configuration>
<sourceDirs>
<source>${project.basedir}/src/main/kotlin</source>
</sourceDirs>
</configuration>
</plugin>
And the Kotlin class:
Stateless
open class DummyServiceImpl : DummyService {
PersistenceContext(unitName = Consts.UNIT_NAME)
private val em: EntityManager? = null
override fun get(id: Long?): Dummy {
return em!!.find<Dummy>(javaClass<Dummy>(), id)
}
override fun sayHi(): String {
return "Dummy service says \"Hi!\"."
}
}
DummyService and Consts classes are Java classes residing in the same module as DummyServiceImpl.
So when I compile the module containing DummyServiceImpl with Maven it goes like this:
[error] C:\somepath\service\DummyServiceImpl.kt: (14, 31) Unresolved reference: DummyService
[error] C:\somepath\service\DummyServiceImpl.kt: (16, 35) Unresolved reference: Consts
If I switch Kotlin plugin execution phase to compile then it predictably fails if there're references from Java to Kotlin classes:
[ERROR] /C:/somepath/service/impl/DummyServiceClientImpl.java:[5,27] cannot find symbol
[ERROR] symbol: class DummyServiceImpl
So, what's to be done about this? Note that building with IDEA's make goes perfectly fine.
Make sure you have this declaration in <build> of your pom.xml
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<artifactId>kotlin-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<version>${kotlin.version}</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>compile</id>
<phase>process-sources</phase>
<goals>
<goal>compile</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<sourceDirs>
<source>src/main/java</source>
<source>src/main/kotlin</source>
<source>src/main/resources</source>
</sourceDirs>
</configuration>
</execution>
<execution>
<id>test-compile</id>
<phase>process-test-sources</phase>
<goals>
<goal>test-compile</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<sourceDirs>
<source>src/test/java</source>
<source>src/test/kotlin</source>
<source>src/test/resources</source>
</sourceDirs>
</configuration>
</execution>
</executions>
</plugin>
</plugins>
Make sure that all folders (3x in src/main & 3x in src/test) mentioned in the configuration actually exist, even if they don’t contain any classes/resources. You can still fine-tune the configuration once it works for you.
Also pay attention to use exactly the same order I mentioned above to let the compiler compile the Java code first.
Referred from this Kotlin + java demo apps
You have to execute mvn kotlin:compile before mvn package. mvn kotlin:compile will compile the Kotlin files to class files.

I ended using the following configuration to mix Java and Kotlin source code:
<build>
<sourceDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/main/java</sourceDirectory>
<testSourceDirectory>${project.basedir}/src/test/java</testSourceDirectory>
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.jetbrains.kotlin</groupId>
<artifactId>kotlin-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<version>${kotlin.version}</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>compile</id>
<phase>compile</phase>
<goals>
<goal>compile</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<sourceDirs>
<source>src/main/kotlin</source>
</sourceDirs>
</configuration>
</execution>
<execution>
<id>test-compile</id>
<phase>test-compile</phase>
<goals>
<goal>test-compile</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<sourceDirs>
<source>src/test/kotlin</source>
</sourceDirs>
</configuration>
</execution>
</executions>
</plugin>
</plugins>
</build>
Make sure to NOT use the build options: sourceDirectory and testSourceDirectory
All configurations goes at kotlin-maven-plugin, for more accurate information see:
