passing precompile directives to javac? - java

I am writing a desktop and j2me application. I have debug statements in program. Currently to avoid those getting compiled i use as following. We are doing this to reduce size of jar. (Specifically for mobile)
ConstantFile.java
Boolean ConstantFile.DebugEnabled = false;
if(ConstantFile.DebugEnabled) {
log.debug("msg");
}
But this is sort of hard coding. Is there an alternative like C where we have pre-compiled directives. Can Annotation help here ? Or something else i should look for ?

No, there is no precompile in Java, but instead of using the constants file like you are currently using, try Log4j or some other logging package that supports an isDebugEnabled() operation. This will avoid the hardcoding in favor of a config file or VM argument.

Annotations could work, or you could look at AOP. AOP would allow you to automatically insert code into your methods at specific points. Either way should get you what you want.

I got exact answer i wanted. Preprocessor. Similar to hatchetman82 suggested, There is wtkpreprocess task available. And its specifically developed for mobile. (Though it can be used for other java part also.) And it works perfectly. It comments out line so byte code remains lighter.

Can I modify the byte code of a Java method in the runtime?

I am writing a plugin of another large java program .
I want to modify some byte code of some java method of the java program during runtime, so that I can intercept the method calls (namely, inject some hooking code into the method).
Any way can achieve this?
PS:
I've checked the following approaches:
1.change the classloader of the java program. (we CANNOT change it)
2.use java proxy. (We CANNOT use java proxy, because java proxy would create a new proxy object. We DON'T use the proxy object. We need to hook the java program's object, and Use that object)
3. use -javaagent option ( we CANNOT add the commandline option for the java program.)

My classes was loaded by ext class loader (I put my jar files in JAVA_HOME\lib\ext folder).
The large java program is an applet program loaded by Browser. When the browser start the applet, it also loads my classes.

Although it's running in Applet. I can have full permission. Because I can modify java.policy and java.security file.

Just use -javaagent opiton, which is used to modify the bytecode at runtime. You can find more about -javaagent from This Link or from This Link
There are several libraries which you can use. See for example here.
Once a class was already loaded/initialized by the VM it will be impossible to manipulate, though.
By the way, in principle you can also just replace the class to be 'hooked' with your own proxy class file. As long as the class' visible interface does not change this may work. (Sub-classes of the class may horribly fail at runtime though.) This replacement can be as easy as changing the classpath so that your class of the same name will be found first, before the original one. Delegating to the original class of the same name may be a little more complex in this case.
Yes, you can, but the process would be a bit tricky, as you would operate directly with memory. For this purpose, you'd look at unofficial documentation on sun.misc package and its Unsafe class.
Warning 1: the Unsafe class would be removed in JDK 9 according to official sources.
Warning 2: the Sun company would not take responsibility for your code to work correctly, as this class should not be used at all, and exists for system usage only.
Sorry, but this is not possible. First off, bytecode is immutable after classloading. The JVM provides several APIs that can be used to do something like this, but they are obviously highly privileged.
If you're running in a low privilege environment like a browser Applet, then you're obviously not going to be allowed to do this, and any method you could should be considered a security vulnerability.
But the question is why you are using applets in the first place, and why you want to modify code after loading. There's almost certainly a better way to do what you're trying to do.

Java annotation for commented out code

So like probably many people out there I usually comment out code temporarily, mostly for debugging purposes. I currently put something like **DEBUG** or whatever that is easily searched for, but I thought having the compiler output a warning (or even an error) whenever it finds code that is temporarily commented out could be useful. I thought of using an annotation, but annotations can't be used to mark comments.
Does anyone know of a better approach than putting an easily searchable string in the commented-out section of code?
there are plenty of code inspection tools out there that can alert you to the presence of code patterns that you define. most of them have built-in support for detecting common stuff like "//todo" comments left in code etc.
most IDEs support auto-detection of //todo as well (intellij idea, for example).
a common command-line tool for this is checkstyle. you could run it as part of your build and have it point these things out to you
At least Eclipse allows you to use (and define your own) markers put in comments, that can be easily listed afterwards. There's at least TODO and XXX, but I believe you could make your own as well.
If you're using Maven, consider to use the taglist-maven-plugin.

Modify Java sourcecode programmatically with Java or Groovy

To automate certain manual tasks in an legacy project, I need to modify existing java files from within java or groovy code.
I donĀ“t want to use RegEx, because it would be neither quick nor clean in my opinion.
I found javassist and srcgen4javassist. The first one lets me modify my sources as I wish, but only writes bytecode, loosing all comments and annotations. And with the second one I didnt manage to read an existing Class not created with srcgen4javassist itself.
Is there an elegant solution, or do i need to bite the bullet and use Regex?
you could really parse the code using something like eclipse's ASTParser at which point you coudl locate your replacement targets xpath-style, but its a lot of work.
you could also consider marking replacement areas with annotation and writing an annotation processor to generate/alter sources at runtime, but (at least in my opinion) the API is cumbersome.
you can combine regexp with some marker in the source code, something like
//START REPLACEMENT-TARGET
...code to be edited/replaced
//END REPLACEMENT TARGET
which would make your regexp targeting a lot safer.

Is there a way to link JDK annotations to requirements?

Hi guys: Is there an open source way to associate java #annotations to functional requirements, or for example, TRAC tickets, etc? I want to do something like this:
I'm thinking along the lines of an eclipse plugin which somehow links up with another FOSS project tracking tool, wiki, or maybe even a CSV file.
A somewhat silly but exemplary illustration of what I desire is below:

Annotations are metadata, they simply add information to your code for other tools to use or to be inspected at runtime via reflection.
One thing you can do is write an annotation processor that will generate the necessary artefacts. Those could be configuration files, scripts, code...
Another thing you can do is write some tool that knows how to interpret your annotations and uses reflection to find them and take the appropriate actions. For this you'd need to make sure that the annotation type is set to have runtime retention, as opposed to only source or class.
Perhaps some of the stuff found in the answers to this question might prove of use. If that's the case, go ahead and use it. But writing custom annotation processors or code for handling them is not all that terribly hard. The difficult part is getting to know the Java model API that's used by annotation processors, which is like reflection but at compile time (before you have fully-formed classes).
in a previous life, we did something similar with #requirement ##### annotations, and then had a custom javadoc task that turned the requirement annotations into hyperlinks in the javadocs.
I was going to write an addin for eclipse that turned them into links in the code as well, but never got that far.

java runtime tracing library to replace system.out.println

Have you heard of any library which would allow me to set up tracing for specific methods at runtime?
Instead of adding (and removing) lots of System.out.println in my code (and having to re-compile and re-deploy) I would like to have a magic thing which would print out a line for each call of selected method without any change in the code. This would work without re-compiling, so some kind of JVM agent (or some non-standard JVM would be needed?). Sounds like a job for aspect programming?
A typical scenario would be to start an application, configure the traced methods dynamically (in a separate file or similar) and then everytime a selected method is called a line with its name (and arguments) is printed out to System.out (or some log file).
Naturally one could think of tens of additional features, but this basic set would be a great tool. BTW, I use Eclipse interactive debugger too, not only the System.out tracing technique, but both have some advantages and sometimes Eclipse is not enough.
Yes what you are referring to is known as Aspect oriented programming. A typical library providing this for Java is AspectJ. You define what are called pointcuts, essentially regular expressions for classes and method names, including wildcards, and the code to execute at each pointcut, known as an advice. This is useful for logging and also security checks and similar cross cutting concerns.
You can turn pointcut advices on and off through configuration. You can have an advice execute before a method call, after it returns or even after it throws an exception. Arguments are also available.
An aspectj java agent is needed for this to work.
In my experience, that kind of very detailed tracing (much more detailed than one would normally use for logging) as a debugging technique is indicative of insufficient unit testing and integration testing.
You can do this using a tool called InTrace.
NOTE: InTrace is a free and open source tool which I have written.
Log4J useful for disabling logging depending on "log-level" (DEBUG, INFO, WARN, FATAL).
You specify in configuration file what the least level you want to appear in logs, e.g., don't log anything below INFO level, and voila!
Looks like there's yet another solution - called Byteman. In their own words:

it has already started running. The injected code is allowed to access
any of your data and call any application methods, including where
they are private. You can inject code almost anywhere you want and
there is no need to prepare the original source code in advance nor do
you have to recompile, repackage or redeploy your application. In fact
you can remove injected code and reinstall different code while the
application continues to execute.
Jackplay is the tool you are looking for.
It allows you to enable logging on method entry and exit points without any coding or redeployment.
It also allows redefining a method body. It gives you web based UI as control panel to enable or undo tracing on your class.methods.
