XML files in java classpath not being found - java

I've been trying to get some config files added into a JAR manifests class-path. Things like Spring, Log4j files etc... when I run the jar, it picks up other jars on the classpath so it can run the application starter class (which is in another jar) but it only looks for the XML files in the directory the jar is located, even though I can see it's path on the manifest.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Try to run it with verbose class loading switch on java command line to make sure classes in jars are actually being loaded.
There is a line length limit of 72 bytes in MANIFEST.MF - make sure you don't have a long lines there.

NoClassDefFoundError when referencing library

ok I have been search the internet all day and I have tried everything I have seen so i am wondering if someone could help.
I have a class that references a jar file which i have copied into my workspace in the lib folder the jar is: Classifier4J.jar, My class run perfectly on the console no error at all. When I try to package the .jar together and run the .jar from another program it gives me this error:
Exception in thread "pool-2-thread-1" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: net/sf/classifier4J/bayesian/IWordsDataSource...(10 more)
So clearly when i create the .jar its not able to reference the classifier4j library that it needs.
Things I have tried:
-Configure my build path
-Change the manifest file
-packaged the .jar with my .jar
-in eclipse went to file>export>java>runnable .jar then references the libraries
and many other things and nothing worked.
If anyway has had a similar issue or knows why this is happening could you please help me its really wrecking my head. Is this a problem with eclipse? can it be done through eclipse?

Ok after hours of looking at the problem i finally found the solution, When I output my classes as a .jar file I pointed it to my manifest file. I couldn't find what i was doing wrong because it didn't work. I decided to look at what was actually put into the jar and i saw that eclipse wasn't putting the correct manifest file i asked it to into the jar. It was putting a new one that looked like:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
where it should have looked like:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Class-Path: ../lib/Classifier4J.jar
where the lib folder was back a directory from where my jar was. Everything is working perfectly now. Thank you for all your help.

It is hard to understand what you are actually trying to do, what you have actually tried, and what you expect to work, but I think the clue is here:
packaged the .jar with my .jar
This seems to imply that you are trying to create an "executable JAR" that contains all of the dependent JARs ... as-is. That won't work, an "executable JAR" cannot contain other JARs. (Well is can ... but you can't put them on your application's classpath without doing seriously complicated things.)
Basically, you have two options:
Don't try to include the dependent JARs in your (executable or not) application JAR. Keep them separate, and configure the execution classpath to include them. (And beware that for an executable JAR, the execution classpath must be configured as a Manifest entry. If you use java -jar ..., the -cp argument and $CLASS_PATH are ignored!)
Create a so-called "uber-JAR" by exploding the application JAR and all of the dependent JARs into a single directory and then creating a single JAR (with a suitable Manifest) from the lot. Your build tool or IDE may have support for this via some plugin.
I personally prefer the former approach ... combined with an "installation directory" for the application and a wrapper script. With the latter approach you make it hard for the user (or deployer) to mix-and-match versions of dependent JARs. Furthermore, the "uber-JAR" approach could conflict with a 3rd-party library's license.
At last, maybe we can get somewhere

OK. You should have mentioned that before, because it is a critical piece of information. In order for a JAR file to usable within in a web container (i.e. in the same JVM as Tomcat), there must be a copy of the JAR file and all of its dependent JAR files in the web container's directory tree. There are two choices. Either you put them in the webapp's lib directory (i.e. webapp/WEB-INFO/lib) or you put them in the shared library directory ... which depends on which version of Tomcat you are using.
(The "executable JAR" approach won't work here. The classpath stuff you put in the Manifest is irrelevant. And nesting JAR files won't work either.)
The particular library is not included in your jar. You could either try to fix your eclipses build configuration to include that library, or add the library's jar to the classpath when you run the program.
The later may be easier. Just add the following to the command when you execute your program.
java -cp yourjar.jar;thelibrarysjar.jar com.your.Mainclass
You need to understand that NoClassDefFoundError hardly ever means that the identified class can't be found. Far more often, the class was found, but something prevented it from being successfully loaded.
The two most likely problems are -
Some other missing class that prevents the named class from being "verified".
Some incompatibility due to a different version of a class (usually another class) being used in compilation vs execution.
In your case it's most likely that when you have the problem you're picking up a different (and incompatible) version of some other jar, vs the environment during compilation.

How should resources in a compiled jar be accessed?

First of all, I have read through many S.O. questions regarding this topic and I have tried the things suggested in them.
Here is my situation. I am writing a Java app using the Processing framework and I'm in the final stages where I need to begin thinking about packaging the app. A jar file that is executable from the command line is what I'm attempting to build using the Export feature in Eclipse.
The structure of my project looks like this:
src/
multiple packages/
libs/
jar files and natives
data/
fonts and images
config/
json files
When I export the jar file and uzip the jar to inspect it's contents, I find that the contents of these dirs have been dumped in the top level of the .jar.
Which looks like this:
.jar
packages
jar files
fonts
json files
So, when I attempt to load a config file with something like:
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader( new FileReader( path ) );
Everything works just file when I run the app in Eclipse. But the jar file throws a FileNotFoundException.
Many of the questions that I've seen on S.O. regarding problems like these recommend using using class.getClass().getResource() or class.getResourceAsStream(). I have tried both of these using relative paths and just the file name as in:
class.getResource( 'config.json' );
class.getResources( 'cfg/config.json' );
class.getResourceAsStream( '../../config.json' );
All of these methods return null, when run from either Eclipse or the jar using:
java -jar myjarfile.jar
I am also open to using an Ant file. In fact, I'm now using the Ant file generated by the export feature to build the jar. If there is something I can add to that to add the directories into the jar that would be great too.
To reach resources in the root, prepend a / to the path. If not, you do it relative to the current package, which is usually only useful if the resource is physically next to the class in your sources too.
So use class.getResourceAsStream("/config.json"); to reach config.json in the root of the jar.
Also note that jars-inside-jars are not directly supported.
Your .jar file should just include the directories related to the "package" for the compiled code. You might be referencing a .war structure with /lib /WEB-INF etc. and this is different.
If your package structure is:
com.yourco.authentication
And your class in Login
Then your jar should be
/com/
/yourco/
/authentication/
Login.class
you then need the .jar in your classpath for the env to run via command line.
I see you note it works in Eclipse which likely has environment settings and imported required libs, etc. so hard to tell exactly. If your packages/ folder includes the compiled java code, I'm unsure if that'll work when referenced externally, thus suggesting you start your packages in the root folder.

How to package libraries into my jar using Ant

My application relies on two external libraries, I have both in jar format and have added them to my classpath, making it possible to run my application within NetBeans.
However, I would like to package my application in an easy to use jar file. When I tried the automatic method of jar creation provided by NetBeans (where it auto generates a jarfile in dist/) and ran it on another computer, I got lots of ClassNotFound (or similar) exceptions for classes that I could tell were supposed to be provided by my other libraries.
Is there a way I can include the other jarfiles I have into my own jar? I've never created an application which relies on other libraries before so this is a first for me.
You can add a "Class-path" line to your jar's manifest. The drawback is that you have to hard code the paths to a file system (not jar) location in the manifest. If you put them all in the same directory or a consistent relative directory, it should be manageable.

Problem with incrementally setting up classpath when running a jar file

I have an application contained in A.JAR. This jar has several dependencies so they are specified in the manifest as "lib/B.JAR lib/C.JAR lib/D.JAR". I have my installation directory with A.JAR, and under it I have the lib directory with the three others.
I go to my installation directory and run "java -jar A.JAR" to run the application, and it starts running. However, it looks for log4j.properties for setting up log4j. Now as far as I know, log4j.properties needs to be in the classpath.
Now let's suppose I want to run several instances of A.JAR, but with various log4j properties. So I setup 4 installation directories (inst1, inst2,...) and I've put A.JAR, a customized log4j.properties and the lib directory in each of them.
Is this the right way to go (forget about the copying itself, I can do this with symlinks)? Maybe there's a way for telling log4j to look for the properties in a specific place using some define (-D) in runtime?
If what I've described is a good setup, how can I actually run it? Java doesn't "catch" the log4j.properties as part of its classpath. running "java -classpath . -jar A.JAR" wasn't helpful as well.
You can use the log4j.configuration system property to define the properties files you want log4j to use.
A simple example for a file in some directory would be:
java -Dlog4j.configuration=file:/c:/foobar.properties YOUR CLASS PATH -jar JAR FILE

The dreaded java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError

I've looked through many of the existing threads about this error, but still no luck. I'm not even trying to package a jar or use any third-party packaging tools. I'm simply running from within Eclipse (works great) and then trying to run the exact same app from the command line, in the same location it's built to (getting this error). My goal is to be able to zip up the bin folder and send it off to be run by someone else via a command line script. Some details:
It's a command-line app and I'm using the commons-lang-2.4.jar for string utilities. That is the file that cannot be located (specificaly "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/commons/lang/StringEscapeUtils")
I have that jar in my lib folder and have added it to my build path in Eclipse via right-click "Build Path -> Add to Build Path"
The .classpath file looks correct and contains the reference to the jar, but I assume that file is only used by Eclipse (contains this line: <classpathentry kind="lib" path="lib/commons-lang-2.4.jar"/>)
Could this be related to the Eclipse working directory setting? I have some internal template files that I created that are under src/templates, and the only way I can seem to get those to be seen is by setting the project working directory to AppName/src. Maybe I should be putting those somewhere else?
Let me know if any additional info would help. Surely this is something simple, but I've wasted too much time on it at this point. This is reminding me why I originally left Java back in '05 or so...
A NoClassDefFoundError basically means that the class was there in the classpath during compiletime, but it is missing in the classpath during runtime.
In your case, when executing using java.exe from commandline, you need to specify the classpath in the -cp or -classpath argument. Or if it is a JAR file, then you need to specify it in the class-path entry of its MANIFEST.MF file.
The value of the argument/entry can be either absolute or relative file system paths to a folder containing all .class files or to an individual .jar file. You can separate paths using a semicolon ;. When a path contains spaces, you need to wrap the particular path with doublequotes ". Example:
java -cp .;c:/path/to/file.jar;"c:/spacy path/to/classes" mypackage.MyClass
To save the effort of typing and editing the argument in commandline everytime, use a .bat file.
Edit: I should have realized that you're using an Unix based operating system. The above examples are Windows-targeted. In the case of Unix like platforms you can follow the same rules, but you need to separate the paths using a colon : and instead of an eventual batch file, use a .sh file.

Are you specifying the classpath to java on the command line?
$ java -cp lib/commons-lang-2.4.jar your.main.Class
The classpath setting you are setting in Eclispe are only for the IDE and do not affect how you application is run outside the IDE. Even if you use the Eclipse Functionality to export your application as an executable jar file there is no out of the box way to package all the jars your application depends on.
If you have packaged you application into a jar file called myapp.jar then running a command like below will run the application with the jar you depend on, if you have more than one just add them separted by ; on Windows or : on Unix:
java -jar myapp.jar -cp .;c:/pathtolibs/commons-lang-2.4.jar
If you are just running the classes directly then either run the folder containing your .class files will also need to be on the path (though I assume it already is since you are able to run the program and get errors).
Consider File -> Export -> Runnable jar to create a jar file which can be invoked directly with
java -jar yourProgram.jar
There are several variants depending on your needs.
Eclipse does not move any of the jars in your classpath into the bin folder of your project. You need to copy the util jar into the bin folder. If you move it to the root of the bin folder, you might be able to get away without any classpath entries but it's not the recommended solution. See #BalusC's answer for good coverage of that.
Eclipse doesn't build executable java classes by default. Don't ask me why, but it probably has something to do with using their own tools.jar (somewhere in plugins/org.eclipse.core ?) so that Eclipse can run without a JDK.
You can usually go to your project bin directory and do:
java -cp . MyClass
But if you have external jars, Eclipse handles those internally in another weird way, so you'll need to add those too.
make sure your jar commons-lang-2.4.jar in classpath and not redudance.
I ever add jar file to my classpath, and have 2 file jar in my classpath. After I delete it, work smooth
