I am creating a custom bar above a TabHost. For some reason the custom bar does not appear above the TabHost, instead it is drawn behind it. Not sure why. Here is my XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<!--
<RelativeLayout android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:id="#+id/actionbarRelativeLayout">
<ImageButton android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:src="#drawable/icon" android:id="#+id/stocktwitsImageButton"></ImageButton>
<ImageButton android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:src="#drawable/icon" android:id="#+id/composeImageButton" android:layout_alignParentRight="true"></ImageButton>
</RelativeLayout>
-->
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="5dp">
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="5dp" />
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>
Do not use TabHost as the root of your layout. Put your TabHost inside a LinearLayout with orientation:vertical.
Then inside the LinearLayout and before the TabHost, you can put your ActionBar.

I have an activity with a fragment container for showing different details of an object in my app.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:id="#+id/fragment_container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
This works fine. Tabs are displayed properly.
Now I want to add an header line to this actitivy which shows "static" content regardless of the current fragment for the details. The header line shall be on top with the fragment-container below. So I changed the layout to this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:id="#+id/LabeledObjectHeaderInfo"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtHeaderID"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight=".10"
android:gravity="right"
android:padding="10dip"
android:text="#string/txtHeaderID"
android:textSize="20sp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtHeaderIDValue"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight=".20"
android:gravity="left"
android:padding="10dip"
android:text="test"
android:textSize="20sp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtHeaderName"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight=".20"
android:gravity="left"
android:padding="10dip"
android:text="#string/txtHeaderName"
android:textSize="20sp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/txtHeaderNameValue"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight=".50"
android:gravity="left"
android:padding="10dip"
android:text="test"
android:textSize="20sp" />
</LinearLayout >
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:id="#+id/fragment_container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_marginTop="30dp"
>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
My problem is now, that only the header is shown, but not the content of the fragments. I only changed the layout file up to now (as you can see by the "test"-texts), but no other code.
What am I doing wrong and where is my mistake?
Try this
In your container LinearLayout you have android:orientation="horizontal" which shows its first child LinearLayout i.e the Header, but hides its second child LinearLayout i.e the content to the right.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center">
<!-- Inner Layouts -->
</LinearLayout>
Change it to android:orientation="vertical".
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center">
<!-- Inner Layouts -->
</LinearLayout>
just make the orientation in your main layout vertical and it will work fine.
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:orientation="vertical">
Because you are making its orientation horizontal, the fragments layout goes to the right.
I have a tab host in which i have more than 6 buttons. However the screen shows only 3-4 buttons.
Following is the code which i am using along with the image.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#777777">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/layTab"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:paddingLeft="10dp"
android:paddingRight="10dp"
android:background="#drawable/navbar_background"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
>
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
/>
</RelativeLayout>
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_above="#+id/layTab"/>
</RelativeLayout>
</TabHost>
The question is, How am i suppose to add a scroll so that i can scroll upto all 6 buttons or any other trick.
Best Regards
Just nest the TabWidget inside a HorizontalScrollingView, like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#777777" >
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/layTab"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:background="#drawable/navbar_background"
android:gravity="center"
android:paddingLeft="10dp"
android:paddingRight="10dp" >
<HorizontalScrollView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:fillViewport="true"
android:scrollbars="none" >
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</TabWidget>
</HorizontalScrollView>
</RelativeLayout>
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_above="#+id/layTab"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
</TabHost>
By the way, this solution works for many other scenarios, RadioGroup, for example
I have tabHost positioned at bottom of view and tabHost strip appears also at bottom of taps. I would like to get strip positioned on top of tabs. How to do it? Here is my xml file. Thank you.
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1" >
</FrameLayout>
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>
Try With This..
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="5dp">
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="5dp" />
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>
I have the following XML file getting populated via list view. I can't get it to scroll. Please advise:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:ads="http://schemas.android.com/apk/lib/com.google.ads"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:id="#+id/BigLayout"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:fillViewport="true"
android:scrollbars="vertical">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:id="#+id/myMainLayout"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<com.google.ads.AdView android:id="#+id/adViewer"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
ads:adUnitId="xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
ads:adSize="BANNER"
ads:loadAdOnCreate="true"/>
<TextView
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:text="RandomDrunkQuotes.com"
android:id="#+id/lblTitle"
android:textSize="16px"
android:padding="5px"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"/>
<!-- List Divider -->
<View
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="1dip"
android:background="?android:attr/listDivider" />
<!-- ListView (grid_items) -->
<ListView
android:id="#+id/listview"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent">
</ListView>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
</LinearLayout>
#GiantMarshmallow solved it.
Upon removing the scroll view and adding
android:fillViewport="true"
android:scrollbars="vertical"
to the parent LinearLayout fixed my problem. Thank you very much everyone for your input.
ListView in scrollView is such a bad idea. Try not use use focusable views one in another.
I am working on a android project and I have my four tabs. On one of the tabs, I am trying to insert an edit field box. ANy clues on how to do that?
Here is my main.xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"/>
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview1"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="year of car" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview2"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="this is another tab" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview3"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="this is a third tab" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview4"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="this is a fourth tab" />
</FrameLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>
and here is my .java file:
package com.example.gasfillup;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.app.TabActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.TabHost;
public class GasFillup extends TabActivity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
TabHost mTabHost = getTabHost();
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_test1").setIndicator("Car Info").setContent(R.id.textview1));
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_test2").setIndicator("Fillup Info").setContent(R.id.textview2));
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_test3").setIndicator("Gas Milage").setContent(R.id.textview3));
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_test4").setIndicator("Stats").setContent(R.id.textview4));
mTabHost.setCurrentTab(0);
}
}
Any Ideas or help is much appreciated!!

Wrap your with a ... so, framelayout, linearlayout, textview, edittext then close the linearlayout.
Well, let me edit that ... create a separate XML file to hold the entire view you want on the tab and then set it with R.layout.tab1 rather than setting tab1 to the textview.
As Bill Mote said, you need to wrap the content of the tab within some sort of container. Here's an example using a simple LinearLayout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TabWidget
android:id="#android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"/>
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview1"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="year of car" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview2"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="this is another tab" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview3"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:text="this is a third tab" />
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/panel4"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textview4"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="this is a fourth tab" />
<EditText
android:id="#+id/myeditfield"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>
</FrameLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>
Then change your code behind to:
....
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_test4").setIndicator("Stats").setContent(R.id.panel4));
....
Realistically, this is how you should do all of the tabs (so that you can have more than just text), but you get the idea.
