I am fairly new to java and just can't get my java application which relies of external libraries working...
I have two libraries and an application, all exported from eclipse as jars.
NOTE: I don't want them all exported into the same jar, as I wish to re-use the two libraries elsewhere.
enix.lib.common.jar (library 1)
enix.lib.events.jar (library 2)
enix.cmd.events.jar (console application)
When I run:
java -jar enix.cmd.events.jar
I get:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: enix/lib/events/errors/EventLogNotAvailableException
Which obviously means it doesn't have the path to the enix.lib.events.jar (which if renamed to a zip file contains the file enix/lib/events/errors/EventLogNotAvailableException.class) - I then set the classpath in various ways like so:
java -cp ".;*.jar;enix.lib.events.jar" -jar enix.cmd.events.jar
But I get the same error. :(
I also have a GUI app called enix.gnome.events.jar which relies on various jars in /usr/share/java and /opt/libs/jars.
Could someone please explain what I am getting wrong and why, I would be most grateful! THANKS!
*.jar doesn't work, unfortunately. You can use wildcards in java classpaths, but only by putting all your jars in a directory and telling the classpath to use every jar that's there (see this).
I recommend, though, just listing out every jar that you need explicitly. Conventionally you'll see that most applications list every single jar.
When compiling/running java apps with multiple jars, I've found the easiest way is to just add the applicable jars right to my classpath. That way, when you compile or run the program, all of the applicable jars are available.

Let's say I have a web-app.war containing Spring Boot application with libraries (.jar files) inside WEB-INF/lib. Then Someone has removed some of the libs from web-app.war. I put this archive on the deployment server and I have all the dependencies on that server (e.g. somewhere in /3rdparty/*.jar). I need to run my app with command java -jar web-app.war. I've read about classpath and I tried to do the following: java -cp /3rdparty/*.jar -jar web-app.war However I got the error: Could not find or load main class. I cannot rebuild my app within deployment server, I cannot avoid the situation that I described above, so is it possible to achieve my goal?
P.S. Probably this is a kind of dummy question but I really did not find anything non-trivial regarding this problem.

ok I have been search the internet all day and I have tried everything I have seen so i am wondering if someone could help.
I have a class that references a jar file which i have copied into my workspace in the lib folder the jar is: Classifier4J.jar, My class run perfectly on the console no error at all. When I try to package the .jar together and run the .jar from another program it gives me this error:
Exception in thread "pool-2-thread-1" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: net/sf/classifier4J/bayesian/IWordsDataSource...(10 more)
So clearly when i create the .jar its not able to reference the classifier4j library that it needs.
Things I have tried:
-Configure my build path
-Change the manifest file
-packaged the .jar with my .jar
-in eclipse went to file>export>java>runnable .jar then references the libraries
and many other things and nothing worked.
If anyway has had a similar issue or knows why this is happening could you please help me its really wrecking my head. Is this a problem with eclipse? can it be done through eclipse?

Ok after hours of looking at the problem i finally found the solution, When I output my classes as a .jar file I pointed it to my manifest file. I couldn't find what i was doing wrong because it didn't work. I decided to look at what was actually put into the jar and i saw that eclipse wasn't putting the correct manifest file i asked it to into the jar. It was putting a new one that looked like:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
where it should have looked like:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Class-Path: ../lib/Classifier4J.jar
where the lib folder was back a directory from where my jar was. Everything is working perfectly now. Thank you for all your help.

It is hard to understand what you are actually trying to do, what you have actually tried, and what you expect to work, but I think the clue is here:
packaged the .jar with my .jar
This seems to imply that you are trying to create an "executable JAR" that contains all of the dependent JARs ... as-is. That won't work, an "executable JAR" cannot contain other JARs. (Well is can ... but you can't put them on your application's classpath without doing seriously complicated things.)
Basically, you have two options:
Don't try to include the dependent JARs in your (executable or not) application JAR. Keep them separate, and configure the execution classpath to include them. (And beware that for an executable JAR, the execution classpath must be configured as a Manifest entry. If you use java -jar ..., the -cp argument and $CLASS_PATH are ignored!)
Create a so-called "uber-JAR" by exploding the application JAR and all of the dependent JARs into a single directory and then creating a single JAR (with a suitable Manifest) from the lot. Your build tool or IDE may have support for this via some plugin.
I personally prefer the former approach ... combined with an "installation directory" for the application and a wrapper script. With the latter approach you make it hard for the user (or deployer) to mix-and-match versions of dependent JARs. Furthermore, the "uber-JAR" approach could conflict with a 3rd-party library's license.
At last, maybe we can get somewhere

OK. You should have mentioned that before, because it is a critical piece of information. In order for a JAR file to usable within in a web container (i.e. in the same JVM as Tomcat), there must be a copy of the JAR file and all of its dependent JAR files in the web container's directory tree. There are two choices. Either you put them in the webapp's lib directory (i.e. webapp/WEB-INFO/lib) or you put them in the shared library directory ... which depends on which version of Tomcat you are using.
(The "executable JAR" approach won't work here. The classpath stuff you put in the Manifest is irrelevant. And nesting JAR files won't work either.)
The particular library is not included in your jar. You could either try to fix your eclipses build configuration to include that library, or add the library's jar to the classpath when you run the program.
The later may be easier. Just add the following to the command when you execute your program.
java -cp yourjar.jar;thelibrarysjar.jar com.your.Mainclass
You need to understand that NoClassDefFoundError hardly ever means that the identified class can't be found. Far more often, the class was found, but something prevented it from being successfully loaded.
The two most likely problems are -
Some other missing class that prevents the named class from being "verified".
Some incompatibility due to a different version of a class (usually another class) being used in compilation vs execution.
In your case it's most likely that when you have the problem you're picking up a different (and incompatible) version of some other jar, vs the environment during compilation.
first off let me start by saying I am completely new to Java, but to give you an idea of how new; I started reading lots of books, examples and so forth and began programming Java using Eclipse about 2 months ago. However, I found a really cool bit of advise about using notepad and the terminal to program instead. Kinda crazy for a newbie to go the hard route, but I love a challenge and I'm serious about learning.
So, In Eclipse I had a really good grasp of how to import, add jars compile etc. When I started using pico and using the terminal (I'm running ubuntu) to compile all went really well, until I wanted to use packages. I've spent two days pulling my hair out because no matter what I do I can't figure it out.
I'm trying to use the acm.jar (which I have many times in Eclipse) however I'm completely lost on how to use it when compiling from the javac in terminal.
So what I'm asking for, is for someone to explain the process getting my jar file to work.
All I'm using to create my java programs is the pico (or notepad) and the javac in the terminal.
To compile and run a java class using external libraries, you have to add that library to the classpath. The classpath is the set of places where the java compiler and the JVM look to find any external libraries/classes that it needs during the process of compiling/executing.
Setting the classpath can be done in 2 ways:
Set an environment variable called CLASSPATH
Set it when your run javac/java
Setting the classpath when running javac/java is done like this:
javac -cp path/to/jar1:path/to/jar2:path/to/jar3:path/to/dirContainingClasses
yourMainClass.java
To run:
java -cp path/to/jar1:path/to/jar2:path/to/jar3:path/to/dirContainingClasses
yourMainClass
: is used as a separator on Linux, for windows use ;
Assuming your source files are in src. Assuming you want your compiled classes to be in classes. Assuming your source files reference classes that are in lib/acm.jar:
javac -cp classes:lib/acm.jar -d classes src/com/foo/bar/MyClass.java
will compile the class com.foo.bar.MyClass and put the generated MyClass.class file in classes/com/foo/bar.
You need the acm.jar file in the classpath. That's what the -cp lib/acm.jar option does. You also need classes in the classpath, because MyClass probably references other classes that you have already compiled and that are in your classes directory.
To run your class, it has to be in the classpath, and acm.jar as well:
java -cp classes:lib/acm.jar com.foo.bar.MyClass
As you see, the classpath contains jar files, and directories containing the folder hierarchy which matches the package hierarchy.
I wouldn't use javac from the command line directly, though. Try using a real build tool, that will build all your classes at once, like Gradle or Ant. Maven is also very popular, but I hate it with passion.
I just asked a recent question about distributing executable JARs and their dependencies, and it made me realize that my understanding of JARs may be fundamentally flawed.
Thus, some might say "Hey now! This here is a duplicate question!" But I say nay, this question is a completely separate offshoot of this
original question, and is concerned with Java fundamentals!
If I have an application that depends on, say, the Apache Commons CLI as well as JODA Time, and I pack this app up into a distributable JAR, my original question was: Without including the CLI and JODA JARs in my JAR, how does the program run on the client-side???
I am now thinking that since my code, which uses CLI and JODA, gets compiled into classfiles, and that bytecode is what gets packaged, then there is no need to include CLI or JODA (or any other 3rd party JAR) in my JAR, since it is all now functioning bytecode.
Can someone confirm or correct me? This revelation, though late in coming, has been staggering.
No, that is not quite right. The key to everything is the classpath. Is all of the compiled code and/or other resources on the classpath? If you package everything up in one single jar, then yes, it is in the classpath and the JVM will locate all the resources to run. Otherwise, you need to specify (with a .bat or .sh file or something) all the resources that your application is dependent on, so the JVM will be able to appropriately look for those resources (be they Java code or properties files or whatever).
Also if I am reading your question right, are you assuming that the CLI and JODA code gets compiled into your code? If so, I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not the case. When your code compiles, it does not bring in dependencies (not in the sense you may be thinking). What it does at a conceptual level (correct me if I'm wrong JVM gurus) is it references other classes. Those references are what you are building when you code a class and compile it. At runtime the JVM will attempt to locate the compiled class behind the reference and THAT is where you either need the jar with those classes in the classpath OR you need those classes in your executable jar.
Make sense?
The third party libraries (JodaTime, for example) need to be on the classpath during runtime. Not "packaged within your JAR".

You can have ANT generate the manifest classpath for you using the manifestclasspath element - http://ant.apache.org/manual/Tasks/manifestclasspath.html
I am new to Java (and Eclipse) but I have used .NET (and Visual Studio) a fair amount. I also know about compiling C/C++ code and things like that. I know that at the end I get either an EXE or a nice binary file that can be run from the command line.
I have been making a Java utility that uses some external libraries. I need to compile this into an executable that I can run from the command line on a unix machine, but I cannot find any way to do this.
I can build and run/debug in Eclipse, but that is no use to me as this code will be run on a webserver. I just need all the dependancies compiled in to one file but after hours of searching on Google, the best thing I could find was the Fat-JAR plugin for Eclipse and after using that I just get the following error when I try to run the file:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Network/jar
This is really confusing me and as it is such an essential thing to be able to do I am sure I must be missing something blindingly obvious, but as I said, after hours of searching I have gotten nowhere.

If you build your java app using Maven (which can be done with every major IDE), then you can use the maven Shade Plugin to build a shaded jar file; this is a jar file with all of its dependencies included.
A shaded jar can be run from the command line like this:
java -jar myjar.jar command line options
You're doing something standard and you're using eclipse. This means, in your case, Maven is your friend. Download and install the M2Eclipse plug-in. Maven is best at managing dependencies. So, creating a jar with dependencies included will be very, very straight forward. There are thousands of examples on the web and in StackOverflow. If you have problems setting it up, comment on this and I can point you in the right direction.
Sounds like your class path on the server needs to be modified to pick up the jar file containing the Network class. How are you executing your program? What path(s) are you putting in the -cp option?
If you are not sure how to find out the contents inside a jar file, run jar tf , this will list the packaged classes. Validate that one of the jars in your CLASSPATH has that class it says missing.
Give us more details and we can help solve it.
I think I should first explain some basics. A Java class can be run as an application if it has a public static void main(String[] args) method. If it has this method, you can run it from command line as:
java my.package.MyClass <attributes>
Before launching your app, you need to make sure that all required .jar files (and the root of your own class folders, if you did not make a jar from your classes) are in the CLASSPATH environment variable.
These are the absolute basics. When you are building a more complex app, or an app for distribution, you'll probably use maven or ant or some other tool that makes your life easier.
