Cannot determine current directory - java

I am trying to run a .jar file that was created successfully in Netbeans and I am receiving the following error:
Error occurred during initialization of VM java.lang.Error:
Properties init: Could not determine current working directory. at
java.lang.System.initProperties(Native Method) at
java.lang.System.initializeSystemClass(System.java:1070)
The command that I type to run the .jar is
java -jar "/path to the dist forlder/EOPPrototype.jar"
My classpath is as follows:
CLASSPATH=/opt/netbeans-7.1.2/ide/modules/ext/mysql-connector-java-5.1.13- bin.jar:/h/USERS/local/pagola/NetBeansProjects/mylib/dist/mylib.jar:/h/USERS/local/pagola/NetBeansProjects/EOPPrototype/build/classes:.
What am i missing?


I saw the same error when I was trying to call java -version inside a directory, which I already had deleted from another terminal session. Of course in that case java could not determine the current working directory, simply because it didn't exist.


Solution: cd to another directory and run that command again, that works for me.

In Fedora 21, I tried calling the "java -version" after an uninstall and it gave the above error. Close all the terminals and open them again and try.
Should work.


I was getting the same error message, but I'm not sure if it was for the same reason as I don't use Netbeans. I use my terminal and compile with ant.
I cd'd to a directory to run a javafile.class file. The file I want to run is part of a bigger package. The directory structure of the package looked something like this: a/b/c/javafile.class. The a, b, and c directories are all part of a larger package.
To run my javafile.class, I cd'd into a and ran the file from there: java b/c/javafile. After I made some changes and recompiled with my ant script, the directory I was in had been deleted and remade by ant. So, when I ran javafile.class again, I got the error you're getting.
I fixed my problem by cding out of the directories that are deleted and remade by ant and then running my javafile.class again.


maybe you did not config java environment on your workstation correctly
the following configurations were what I did in my mac
vi ~/.bash_profile
and add those in it

with your jdk version
and then run
source ~/.bash_profile
to use these config immediately
then you can check by
java -version

by just doing 'java -version' (you would think it wouldn't need to bring up a
virtual machine just to answer a simple question like 'what version are you?')
A higher up element (that between the slashes) of the directory path of the pwd
had spaces in it. When I made the current working directory one which from /
downward didn't have any spaces the 'java -version' command got a proper response.
I'm concluding they didn't account for directories with spaces when they
programmed it. But that was version 1.7. I've now loaded version 8 so hopefully
it has been corrected.


I got this error on Mac OS X and this is a genuine error since the directory has vanished. The directory I was when I am executing the commands is <PROJECT DIR>\target.
The problem was I opened two terminals in the other terminal I ran mvn clean install and the target directory from PROJECT DIR got deleted and recreated.
My old terminal from where I was executing Java commands is not in a valid directory.
The file descriptor is invalid since the directory got deleted by Maven.
When I moved back to the parent directory and the changed back to the target directory, the java command started working correctly as expected.


Under CentOS, rhel, SL or SLC? Not an issue under debian/ubuntu.
I found you need to logout of the shell you are using and log back in. The environment is not set up initially correctly for the current shell. After login I see that: java -version will work.
Also ensure that /etc/alternatives/java actually points to something reasonable like:
ls -lisa /etc/alternatives/java
72645 0 lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 46 May 27 11:29 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk.x86_64/bin/java


Just now, i got the same error. because i use java to setreuid/setregid to apache:apache, when i change back to root:root, i changed gid before uid, the real result is root:apache. everything going wrong, such as the error say "java.lang.Error: Properties init: Could not determine current working directory. I was having this error in my mac, when I start tomcat from my eclipse. After setting JAVA_HOME and restarting the eclipse, the error is fixed.


You have to install default-jdk first !
sudo apt install default-jdk
only version 11 does not set all the environment correctly
in place of : sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk


You may get this error if you issue "java -version" or other java command from a read-only directory. For example using openjdk 8 on centos (as non-root user):

I want to execute my program without using an IDE.
I've created a jar file and an exectuable jar file. When

instead of
java -jar TestJar.jar
Missing the extension .jar also causes this issue.

I just placed it in a different folder and it worked.

Beware of spaces in the path, even when your jar is in the current working directory. For example, for me this was failing:
java -jar myjar.jar
I was able to fix this by givng the full, quoted path to the jar:
java -jar "%~dp0\myjar.jar"

I had this issue under CygWin in Windows. I have read elsewhere that Java does not understand the CygWin paths (/cygdrive/c/some/dir instead of C:\some\dir) - so I used a relative path instead: ../../some/dir/sbt-launch.jar.

I had the same issue when trying to launch the jar file. The path contained a space, so I had to place quotes around. Instead of:
java -jar C:\Path to File\myJar.jar
i had to write
java -jar "C:\Path to File\myJar.jar"

I tried to run this command in admin cmd
java -jar c:\fw\ducky\duckencode.jar -I c:\fw\ducky\HelloWorld.txt -o c:\fw\ducky\inject.bin
But got this error:
Error: unable to access jarfile c:\fw\ducky\duckencode.jar
Solution
1st step
Right click the jarfile in question. Click properties.
Click the unblock tab in bottom right corner.
The file was blocked, because it was downloaded and not created on my PC.
2nd step
In the cmd I changed the directory to where the jar file is located.
cd C:\fw\ducky\
Then I typed dir and saw the file was named duckencode.jar.jar
So in cmd I changed the original command to reference the file with .jar.jar
java -jar c:\fw\ducky\duckencode.jar.jar -I c:\fw\ducky\HelloWorld.txt -o c:\fw\ducky\inject.bin
That command executed without error messages and the inject.bin I was trying to create was now located in the directory.

None of the provided answers worked for me on macOS 11 Big Sur. The problem turned out to be that programs require special permission to access the Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders, and Java breaks both the exception for directly opened files and the permission request popup.
Fixes:
Move the .jar into a folder that isn’t (and isn’t under) Documents, Desktop, or Downloads.
Manually grant the permission. Go to System Preferences → Security and Privacy → Privacy → Files and Folders → java, and check the appropriate folders.

I had a similar problem and I even tried running my CMD with administrator rights, but it did not solve the problem.
The basic thing is to make sure to change the Directory in cmd to the current directory where your jar file is.
Do the following steps:
Copy jar file to Desktop.
Run CMD
Type command cd desktop
Then type java -jar filename.jar
This should work.

Since Java 11, java command line tool has been able to run a single-file source-code directly. e.g.
java filename.java

If you are using OSX, downloaded files are tagged with a security flag that prevents unsigned applications from running.
to check this you can view extended attributes on the file
$ ls -l#
-rw-r--r--# 1 dave staff 17663235 13 Oct 11:08 server-0.28.2-java8.jar
com.apple.metadata:kMDItemWhereFroms 619
com.apple.quarantine 68
You can then clear the attributes with
xattr -c file.jar

It can also happen if you don't properly supply your list of parameters. Here's what I was doing:
java -jar test#gmail.com testing_subject file.txt test_send_emails.jar
Instead of the correct version:
java -jar test_send_emails.jar test#gmail.com testing_subject file.txt

This worked for me.
cd /path/to/the/jar/
java -jar ./Calculator.jar

For me it happens if you use native Polish chars in foldername that is in the PATH.
So maybe using untypical chars was the reason of the problem.

sometime it happens when you try to (run or create) a .jar file under /libs folder by right click it in android studio. you can select the dropdown in top of android stuio and change it to app. This will work

My particular issue was caused because I was working with directories that involved symbolic links (shortcuts). Consequently, trying java -jar ../../myJar.jar didn't work because I wasn't where I thought I was.
Disregarding relative file paths fixed it right up.

In my case the suggested file name to be used was jarFile*.jar in the command line. The file in the folder was jarFile-1.2.3.jar . So I renamed the file to jarFile. Then I used jarFile.jar instead of jarFile*.jar and then the problem got resolved

It can happen on a windows machine when you have spaces in the names of the folder. The solution would be to enter the path between " ".
For example:
java -jar c:\my folder\x.jar -->
java -jar "c:\my folder\x.jar"

To avoid any permission issues, try to run it as administrator. This worked for me on Win10.

I know this thread is years ago and issue was fixed too. But I hope this would helps someone else in future since I've encountered some similar issues while I tried to install Oracle WebLogic 12c and Oracle OFR in which its installer is in .jar format. For mine case, it was either didn't wrap the JDK directory in quotes or simply typo.
Run Command Prompt as administrator and execute the command in this format. Double check the sentence if there is typo.
"C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.xxxxx\bin\java" -jar C:\Users\xxx\Downloads\xxx.jar
If it shows something like JRE 1.xxx is not a valid JDK Java Home, make sure the System variables for JAVA_HOME in Environment Variables is pointing to the correct JDK directory. JDK 1.8 or above is recommended (2018).

For me it happen because i run it with default java version (7) and not with compiled java version (8) used to create this jar.
So i used:
%Java8_64%\bin\java -jar myjar.jar
Instead of java 7 version:
java -jar myjar.jar

I had a similar problem where TextMate or something replaced the double quotes with the unicode double quotes.
Changing my SELENIUM_SERVER_JAR from the unicode double quotes to regular double quotes and that solved my problem.

this is because you are looking for the file in the wrong path
1. look for the path of the folder where you placed the file
2. change the directory cd in cmd use the right path

I use NetBeans and had the same issue. After I ran build and clean project my program was executable. The Java documentation says that the build/clean command is for rebuilding the project from scratch basically and removing any past compiles. I hope this helps. Also, I'd read the documentation. Maybe you have specified the wrong version of your jar.

I finally pasted my jar file into the same folder as my JDK so I didn't have to include the paths. I also had to open the command prompt as an admin.
Right click Command Prompt and "Run as administrator"
Navigate to the directory where you saved your jdk to
In the command prompt type: java.exe -jar <jar file name>.jar

Keep the file in same directory where you are extracting it. That worked for me.

This is permission issue, see if the directory is under your User.
That's why is working in another folder!

I built the jar and I moved it into the server where I deploy (This is the normal process)
here the file name which I moved already existed in the server, here the file will override obviously right. In this case, I faced this issue.
maybe at the time of overriding there can be a permission copy issue.

The difference is the single space in front of OneWireViewer.jar not withstanding that it is surrounded with quotes and even has other spaces.

java how to check version being used by 'jar launcher.app' on Mac OS

I have several .jar files that run successfully when opened with Mac's built in 'Jar Launcher' (Version 15.0.1) but when ran from terminal they error out.
Looking online the error messages might be down to the incorrect version of Java being linked to the terminal version, so I'd like to check if the options set for 'Jar Launcher' and the Java used within terminal are the same.
Does there exist any way to do this?

This question is two years old, but as there is no answer to it, I thought I'd put my two cents here since I've had issues myself, and have made some observations.
It seems that the Jar Launcher doesn't necessarily use the same JVM version as the one shown by the command /usr/libexec/java_home: If there is a JRE /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin, then the Jar Launcher will use it and ignore anything in /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines.
I've solve my problem of version mismatch between the Jar Launcher and the terminal by removing the JRE:
Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
Remove the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin directory by executing the rm command as a root user or by using the sudo tool.
Go to /Library/PreferencePanes.
Remove JavaControlPanel.prefpane by executing the rm command as a root user or by using the sudo tool.

I have installed a latest maven-3.0.4 on Windows 7:
The installation details are as follows:
Installation Path :
C:\apache-maven-3.0.4
Environment Variables are:
M2_HOME C:\apache-maven-3.0.4\apache-maven\src
JAVA_HOME C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-1.7.0_04
Path variables added are:
%M2_HOME%\bin;%JAVA_HOME%\bin;
In the command window it shows it like this:
C:\>java -version
java version "1.7.0_04"

This is the only version on maven installed on my PC and the solution given on many blogs referring to the deletion of the previous M2_HOME environment variable is not valid.

I hit this problem too, and found this article. For Maven3, changing my environment variable name from M2_HOME to M3_HOME did the trick. I am on a Mac running OSX 10.9 with JDK 1.7.
Note: Please delete M2_HOME, if already set. Eg: unset M2_HOME.

Even though the question is answered I would like to add that, if you are getting the above mentioned error, be sure that you have downloaded the Binary file.
The source file should only be downloaded if you are an advanced user and that you know how to deal with it.

Make sure you can see the %M2% and %JAVA_HOME% variables completely expanded, i.e. :

I believe this error caused because of downloading SRC instead of BINARY from Maven site. Please make sure to download Binary zip.
Because the below path, you will get only when you download SRC:
M2_HOME C:\apache-maven-3.0.4\apache-maven\src

Had this issue on two different Ubuntu 12.04 installs, despite the installs being done by apt-get. Issue was M2_HOME.
Fixed with:
export M2_HOME=/usr/share/maven

It sounds like you installed (extracted) the source files instead of the binaries based on your path information. Try installing the binaries instead and following the other posters answer.

Well, I had this problem and after seeing this post and particularly khmarbaise answer I noticed that M2_HOME was
D:\workspace\apache-maven-3.1.0-bin\apache-maven-3.1.0\bin
and then I chaged it to
D:\workspace\apache-maven-3.1.0-bin\apache-maven-3.1.0
I would like to mention that I use windows 7 (x64)

The solution for later versions of Maven is straight-forward. I am on OS X ElCap, 10.11.6 and upgraded to Maven 3.3.9. I had the same problem with error "Could not find ...org.codehaus.plexus...". The link provided here offered the solution in a comment by McKamey - simply delete M2_HOME (unset M2_HOME). Once I tried that, it all worked as expected.
This can be confirmed by visiting the Maven install page: "Add the bin directory of the created directory apache-maven-3.3.9 to the PATH environment variable" -- no mention of M2_HOME or M3_HOME at all.

For most of the Maven setup issues something like "Could not find or load main class...", start-with below steps to see if that fixes:
Make sure you unzipped the right archive (BINARY archive and not SOURCE archive)
Remove all user and system variables related to Maven (ex. M2_HOME,M2_OPTS etc.)
Make sure JAVA_HOME system variable is setup (ex. "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_172")
Make sure java bin location is added in "path" system variable (ex. "%JAVA_HOME%\bin")
Make sure maven bin location is added in "path" system variable (ex. "C:\MyInstalls\apache-maven-3.5.4\bin")
then...
Verify java is setup (at commandprompt : java -version)
Verify maven is setup (at commandprompt : mvn --version)

Open a new terminal and do the followin
M2_HOME=/Users/macbook/apache-maven-3.6.1 //Set where maven is
M2=$M2_HOME/bin //Set home as bin
export PATH=$M2:$PATH //Place the new path
Then type
mvn -version
You can set this in ./bash_profile to do it automatically each time you run the terminal

You should change the location of the M2_HOME into the following:
set M2_HOME=C:\apache-maven-3.0.4\apache-maven
Furthermore the installation of the JDK looks more a JRE instead of JDK. For Maven you need JDK and NOT JRE.

I came across a similar problem on my mac OSX. After a series of trial and error attempts I finally resolved it.
My ~/.bash_profile looked like this
export M2_HOME=/Users/xyz/maven-3.x/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME
and when I tried to echo M2_HOME from the terminal, it showed me the correct path but when I tried to fire any maven command like mvn clean or mvn install, it always gave the same problem

I solved this issue by changing my M2_HOME to this
export M2_HOME=/Users/xyz/maven-3.x
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME/bin
And voila ! It started working ! Just by moving the position of /bin from M2_HOME to in front of the PATH

Just make sure you've downloaded Binary zip archive(apache-maven-3.5.0-bin.zip) instead of Source zip archive. Then add the bin directory of the created directory apache-maven-3.5.0 to the PATH environment variable.

I had the same issue. I have Windows xp box and when I would type mvn -version at the command line prompt I got the dreaded error message
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/codehaus/plexus/classworlds/launcher/Launcher"
I confirmed that my M2_HOME variable was set to the path where Maven was installed on pc and that the echo %path% confirmed that Maven was in my path.
I have been searching for a solution for hours when I stumbled on to my solution (I say my solution because I know this probably won't be the solution for everyone that is getting the same error).
I copied the path that was assigned to my M2_HOME variable. I opened a cmd window and typed cd and pasted the path I got from my M2_HOME variable. At that point I knew that the path was correct because the path was displayed in the window. At this point I entered the dir command and to my surprise, I got the error File Not Found.
I went to that path via Explorer and sure enough there were files present. I noticed that the folders were faded out, but I could access them and see the files within each folder (I have admin rights on my pc). I looked at the properties of the parent folder for Maven and saw that the Hidden box was checked. I removed the check and applied and tried my dir command again with success.
Next I tried the mvn –version command again, but this time I got back the expected results.
C:\>mvn -version

Finally I created a jar and war file and my web app ran successfully on my local Tomcat.

Besides what #khmarbaise has pointed out, I think you have mistyped your JAVA_HOME. If you have installed in the default location, then there should be no "-" (hyphen) between jdk and 1.7.0_04. So it would be
JAVA_HOME C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_04

For other people who might run into this, don't forget to check ~/.mavenrc for M2_HOME or JAVA_HOME settings.

Try to download binary zip (for ex. Maven 3.0.5 (Binary zip)) instead of complete source in official maven site.
Also make sure that command line recognizes java and javac commands.
I noticed that Maven Source zip didn't include any libraries at lib folder however Binary zip had them + in boot folder it had plexus-classworlds-2.4.jar. Perhaps the problem was with the absence of these libraries. Anyway it helped me so my M2_HOME is: C:\Program Files\Java\apache-maven-3.0.5 and at PATH I put: C:\Program Files\Java\apache-maven-3.0.5\bin.

I find this issue in my centOS is caused by "Oracle Java is replace by gcj", after change default java to "Oracle Java", the issue is resolved.

It look like that you have installed Source files(Because src only comes in Source Files and we don't need it). Try to install Binary Files from
there.
And then set environment variables as described
there.

I think you download the wrong version.
I meet this problem just now, no method work after searching and searching.
Finally, I found that maven I downloaded is Source zip archive.
After I change to Binary zip archive, everything go to be fine.

Me too faced the similar issue. But in my case I used apache-maven-3.3.3-src folder in path variables. Later I corrected those with correct path of folder apache-maven-3.3.3-bin. This resolved the issue. Am not telling that is the same error reported here but this way also you can get this error and rectify it. That is what I am trying to say here.

Exactly the same error may appear even with correct environment variable settings, if you copy ONLY bin directory to the installation directory.
It make which work finely, and novices get stuck.

Next to the maybe useful, but maybe too symptomatic answers, here is one which tries to help to find the cause of the problem.
Maven is a command-line java tool. That means, it is not a standalone binary, it is a collection of java .jars, interpreted by a jvm (java.exe on windows, java on linux).
The mvn command, is a script. On windows, it is a script called mvn.cmd and on linux, it is a shell script. Thus, if you write: mvn install, what will happen:
a command interpreter (/bin/sh or cmd.exe) is called for the actual invoking script
this script sets the needed environment variables
and finally, it calls a java interpreter with the the required classpath which contain the maven functionality.
The problem is with (2). Fortunately, this script is simply, very simple. For a java programmer it shouldn't be a big trouble to debug a script around 20 lines, even if it is a little bit alien language.
On linux, you can debug shellscripts giving the -x flag to your shell interpreter (which is most probably bash). On windows, you have to find some other way to debug a cmd.exe script. So, instead of mvn install, give the command bash -x mvn install.
The result be like:

I had this problem when I used Maven 3.5.4 on OpenJDK 11 on Ubuntu. The OpenJDK 11 on Ubuntu is actually still a JDK10:

I had a problem with surefire plugin itself. Going back to version 2.6 worked for me. Version 2.18/20/22.1 gave me the error.
Now I tried version 3.0.0-M1 of surefire plugin and it works.
So something is wrong in surefire plgin between version 2.6 and 3.0.0. I assume there is something hardcoded as default which should not.

For me, funny as it sounds, it helped just restarting eclipse...

This worked for me:
Remove all Mavin references in Environment Variables
Download the Binary from mavin
Unzip it to where you'd like ex: C:\apache-maven-3.6.0
Go to Environment variables and add to System variable path "C:\apache-maven-3.6.0\bin"
start command prompt as Administrator
check version with: mvn -v

When I changed "JAVA_HOME" as stated above in ".bash_profile", "mvn" command started working but "javac -version" command stopped working.
When I typed "javac -version" command, I got the following error
Unable to locate an executable at "/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_45.jdk/Contents/Home/jre/bin/javac" (-1)

Was able to solve this issue by deleting the downloaded maven in my machine ( /Users/kkohli/Desktop/Personal/Code/Java/apache-maven-3.6.3 ) and re-downloading the binary version from the apache site. Correctly install Java for Matlab

I am trying to extract a jar file from Matlab code using javac from Library Compiler (java package).
I have set JAVA_HOME to:

and added to PATH:

seems like you have to install JDK 1.7.0_11-b21, which is the one your MATLAB version is compatible with for compiling into jar. Also, after installing that specific version, you should modify the JAVA_HOME and PATH environment variables. Try that to see if it helps.

I was having a very similar problem with my installation.
I set the environment variable (press > type env > Enter) JAVA_HOME (under "User variables") to my JDK home directory (not the bin folder) without any trailing \ or ;.
The problem occurs because MATLAB cannot execute javac properly, however, in order to work out exactly what MATLAB is trying to execute (which is not working) we need to use the command window and not the Library Compiler.
It appears you have already done this but for completeness I will add the process here for others.
To find what MATLAB executes, click "Open log file" and copy the entire first line.
Paste the first line in the MATLAB command window and add -v to the end.
Press enter to run the command and note the "Executing command:" that is printed to the screen.
Once you have the "executing command" that MATLAB returns for you, check the first path in that command and make sure it matches your javac file.
In your original post you have done this and posted
C:\Program Files\Java\Java\jdk1.7.0_11\bin\javac
a path which contains \Java\Java, if this isn't a typo then it may be a problem as it is not the default Java installation path. You also say after that your installation is at
...\Java\jdk1.7.0_71\bin\bin\javac
which contains \bin\bin and is also not the default java bin install directory, perhaps another typo?
If the path to javac matches exactly you could try copying and pasting the "executing command" into your OS's command window (+R > cmd > Enter) and looking for errors. By doing this we can remove ourselves from the MATLAB installation and if errors still exist it likely has nothing to do with MATLAB.
To see if the same problem could be caused by other environment variables I removed every other path to a java installation (keeping JAVA_HOME) in my environment variables. MATLAB uses the absolute path to the java installation and so it was still able to compile with javac using only the JAVA_HOME environment variable.

This is the only version on maven installed on my PC and the solution given on many blogs referring to the deletion of the previous M2_HOME environment variable is not valid.

I hit this problem too, and found this article. For Maven3, changing my environment variable name from M2_HOME to M3_HOME did the trick. I am on a Mac running OSX 10.9 with JDK 1.7.
Note: Please delete M2_HOME, if already set. Eg: unset M2_HOME.

Even though the question is answered I would like to add that, if you are getting the above mentioned error, be sure that you have downloaded the Binary file.
The source file should only be downloaded if you are an advanced user and that you know how to deal with it.

Make sure you can see the %M2% and %JAVA_HOME% variables completely expanded, i.e. :

I believe this error caused because of downloading SRC instead of BINARY from Maven site. Please make sure to download Binary zip.
Because the below path, you will get only when you download SRC:
M2_HOME C:\apache-maven-3.0.4\apache-maven\src

Had this issue on two different Ubuntu 12.04 installs, despite the installs being done by apt-get. Issue was M2_HOME.
Fixed with:
export M2_HOME=/usr/share/maven

It sounds like you installed (extracted) the source files instead of the binaries based on your path information. Try installing the binaries instead and following the other posters answer.

Well, I had this problem and after seeing this post and particularly khmarbaise answer I noticed that M2_HOME was
D:\workspace\apache-maven-3.1.0-bin\apache-maven-3.1.0\bin
and then I chaged it to
D:\workspace\apache-maven-3.1.0-bin\apache-maven-3.1.0
I would like to mention that I use windows 7 (x64)

The solution for later versions of Maven is straight-forward. I am on OS X ElCap, 10.11.6 and upgraded to Maven 3.3.9. I had the same problem with error "Could not find ...org.codehaus.plexus...". The link provided here offered the solution in a comment by McKamey - simply delete M2_HOME (unset M2_HOME). Once I tried that, it all worked as expected.
This can be confirmed by visiting the Maven install page: "Add the bin directory of the created directory apache-maven-3.3.9 to the PATH environment variable" -- no mention of M2_HOME or M3_HOME at all.

For most of the Maven setup issues something like "Could not find or load main class...", start-with below steps to see if that fixes:
Make sure you unzipped the right archive (BINARY archive and not SOURCE archive)
Remove all user and system variables related to Maven (ex. M2_HOME,M2_OPTS etc.)
Make sure JAVA_HOME system variable is setup (ex. "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_172")
Make sure java bin location is added in "path" system variable (ex. "%JAVA_HOME%\bin")

You can set this in ./bash_profile to do it automatically each time you run the terminal

You should change the location of the M2_HOME into the following:

Furthermore the installation of the JDK looks more a JRE instead of JDK. For Maven you need JDK and NOT JRE.

I came across a similar problem on my mac OSX. After a series of trial and error attempts I finally resolved it.
My ~/.bash_profile looked like this
export M2_HOME=/Users/xyz/maven-3.x/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME
and when I tried to echo M2_HOME from the terminal, it showed me the correct path but when I tried to fire any maven command like mvn clean or mvn install, it always gave the same problem

I solved this issue by changing my M2_HOME to this
export M2_HOME=/Users/xyz/maven-3.x
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME/bin
And voila ! It started working ! Just by moving the position of /bin from M2_HOME to in front of the PATH

Just make sure you've downloaded Binary zip archive(apache-maven-3.5.0-bin.zip) instead of Source zip archive. Then add the bin directory of the created directory apache-maven-3.5.0 to the PATH environment variable.

I had the same issue. I have Windows xp box and when I would type mvn -version at the command line prompt I got the dreaded error message
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/codehaus/plexus/classworlds/launcher/Launcher"
I confirmed that my M2_HOME variable was set to the path where Maven was installed on pc and that the echo %path% confirmed that Maven was in my path.
I have been searching for a solution for hours when I stumbled on to my solution (I say my solution because I know this probably won't be the solution for everyone that is getting the same error).
I copied the path that was assigned to my M2_HOME variable. I opened a cmd window and typed cd and pasted the path I got from my M2_HOME variable. At that point I knew that the path was correct because the path was displayed in the window. At this point I entered the dir command and to my surprise, I got the error File Not Found.
I went to that path via Explorer and sure enough there were files present. I noticed that the folders were faded out, but I could access them and see the files within each folder (I have admin rights on my pc). I looked at the properties of the parent folder for Maven and saw that the Hidden box was checked. I removed the check and applied and tried my dir command again with success.
Next I tried the mvn –version command again, but this time I got back the expected results.
C:\>mvn -version
Apache Maven 3.0.3 (r1075438; 2011-02-28 11:31:09-0600)
Maven home: C:\Program Files\apache-maven-3.0.3

Besides what #khmarbaise has pointed out, I think you have mistyped your JAVA_HOME. If you have installed in the default location, then there should be no "-" (hyphen) between jdk and 1.7.0_04. So it would be
JAVA_HOME C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_04

For other people who might run into this, don't forget to check ~/.mavenrc for M2_HOME or JAVA_HOME settings.

Try to download binary zip (for ex. Maven 3.0.5 (Binary zip)) instead of complete source in official maven site.
Also make sure that command line recognizes java and javac commands.
I noticed that Maven Source zip didn't include any libraries at lib folder however Binary zip had them + in boot folder it had plexus-classworlds-2.4.jar. Perhaps the problem was with the absence of these libraries. Anyway it helped me so my M2_HOME is: C:\Program Files\Java\apache-maven-3.0.5 and at PATH I put: C:\Program Files\Java\apache-maven-3.0.5\bin.

I find this issue in my centOS is caused by "Oracle Java is replace by gcj", after change default java to "Oracle Java", the issue is resolved.

It look like that you have installed Source files(Because src only comes in Source Files and we don't need it). Try to install Binary Files from
there.

I think you download the wrong version.
I meet this problem just now, no method work after searching and searching.
Finally, I found that maven I downloaded is Source zip archive.
After I change to Binary zip archive, everything go to be fine.

Me too faced the similar issue. But in my case I used apache-maven-3.3.3-src folder in path variables. Later I corrected those with correct path of folder apache-maven-3.3.3-bin. This resolved the issue. Am not telling that is the same error reported here but this way also you can get this error and rectify it. That is what I am trying to say here.

Exactly the same error may appear even with correct environment variable settings, if you copy ONLY bin directory to the installation directory.
It make which work finely, and novices get stuck.

Next to the maybe useful, but maybe too symptomatic answers, here is one which tries to help to find the cause of the problem.
Maven is a command-line java tool. That means, it is not a standalone binary, it is a collection of java .jars, interpreted by a jvm (java.exe on windows, java on linux).
The mvn command, is a script. On windows, it is a script called mvn.cmd and on linux, it is a shell script. Thus, if you write: mvn install, what will happen:
a command interpreter (/bin/sh or cmd.exe) is called for the actual invoking script
this script sets the needed environment variables
and finally, it calls a java interpreter with the the required classpath which contain the maven functionality.
The problem is with (2). Fortunately, this script is simply, very simple. For a java programmer it shouldn't be a big trouble to debug a script around 20 lines, even if it is a little bit alien language.
On linux, you can debug shellscripts giving the -x flag to your shell interpreter (which is most probably bash). On windows, you have to find some other way to debug a cmd.exe script. So, instead of mvn install, give the command bash -x mvn install.

In the above the first command caused the following error
Error: Could not find or load main class org.codehaus.plexus.classworlds.launcher.Launcher
while the second command worked fine.
Please Note that both the above paths have "java" command while one is from "jre" the other is from "jdk"
Other global variables are as following in ".bash_profile"
export M2_HOME=/Users/venkatarajeevmandava/Documents/Maven/apache-maven-3.6.1
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME/bin

Was able to solve this issue by deleting the downloaded maven in my machine ( /Users/kkohli/Desktop/Personal/Code/Java/apache-maven-3.6.3 ) and re-downloading the binary version from the apache site. Did not modify any other bashprofile file etc ( My M2_HOME, JAVA_HOME etc are set inside my bashprofile)
