You have to make sure you use no layout manager.

By default, a BorderLayout is used. It is great to use layout manager, but the real good ones, that make your windows resizable etc, are hard to understand. Without layout manager, you can specify the bounds as you tried.
You can add components to a JDialog just the way you add to a JFrame since JDialog is a java.awt.Container . You should use a a layout manager or set the layout to null if you want to set the sizes of the components you are adding.
I am not sure of how you really want your components to be laid out but the following snippet should achieve what I am guessing you are trying to do with your current code. Try to work as much as possible with LayoutManager's, Layout constraints, preferred/maximum/minimum sizes and avoid using setLocation/setSize/setBounds.

You get an empty screen because you add the components to the frame after the frame is visible.
As has already been suggested you need to use an appropriate layout manager. FlowLayout is the easiest to start with.
invoke setVisible(true) AFTER adding the components to the frame.
So the code should be more like:

pack();
setVisible(true);

It is possible that some really sharp swing people may miss this. I would think that you will only know this if you are actually using Swing.
The default layout manager for JFrame is BorderLayout.
This means that your components are essentially all been added ontop of each other.
Try changing the layout manager to something like FlowLayout (for example)...
Take a look at A Visual Guide to Layout Managers and Using Layout Managers for more details.
Also, avoid setSize where possible, use Window#pack instead

Don't add the components directly to your frame. Instead add to the content pane, which is where a JFrame stores all of the components that it draws. Usually this is a JPanel.

Creating a new JFrame
The way to create a new instance of a JFrame is pretty simple.
All you have to do is:
JFrame myFrame = new JFrame("Frame Title");
But now the Window is hidden, to see the Window you must use the setVisible(boolean flag) method. Like this:
myFrame.setVisible(true);
Adding Components
There are many ways to add a Component to a JFrame.
The simplest way is:
myFrame.getContentPane().add(new JButton());//in this case we are adding a Button
This will just add a new Component that will fill the JFrame().
If you do not want the Component to fill the screen then you should either make the ContentPane of the JFrame a new custom Container
myFrame.getContentPane() = new JPanel();
OR add a custom Container to the ContentPane and add everything else there.

myFrame.getContentPane().add(mainPanel);
If you do not want to write the myFrame.getContentPane() every time then you could just keep an instance of the ContentPane.

So, the place of that label is determined by the layout of ComponentPanel. Since you didn't specify any layout it is using the default FlowLayout with a CENTER alignment. Assuming that you are ok with a FlowLayout it is a mere question of setting the alignment of the LEFT since this is possible with this layout.
Here's the code with the fix, however I suspect that as you put more elements to the ComponentPanel you will want to use another layout since FlowLayout is more adequate for menus and the like and not for displaying the main content.

I think it may be a matter of you not actually setting layouts where you imagine you're setting layouts.
You have a JPanel with a vertically oriented BoxLayout (Main) enclosing another JPanel with default layout (ComponentPanel), finally enclosing your label. The reason why your label can't be pushed to the right is because is already is pushed to the right within it's enclosing container. If you set a colored border around ComponentPanel, you'll see what I mean -- it only occupies the same amount of space as the JLabel, giving the JLabel nowhere to move.
You need to set a layout and constraints for your intermediate ComponentPanel, allowing it to horizontally fill its parent container so that the label has someplace to go.
You haven't really specified how your layout is supposed to look, but if you change the layout on Main to X_AXIS, your label will pop over to the left (as will its parent container). Without knowing what you're really trying to do, I can't say much more.
I would however, suggest you throw your BoxLayout away entirely and look into using GridBagLayout, which gives you a high level control over your UI. GridBagLayout isn't the most concise construct, but that's the price of control.

Swing components expect a layout manager context when they are added to a window.
The default layout is BorderLayout, which is why you're getting that odd behavior. With only a single element, BorderLayout fills the pane with that element.
