Add method to Generated class in Java - java

I have classes that are automatically generated in Java. I want to add a method to that class (in another file) so that I can add additional functionality without changing the generated file. The idea being that if I have to recreate the generated file, I won't lose my new functionality.
In Objective-c I know this is called categories, and in JavaScript you can append the object's prototype, but I am unaware of how to do this in Java or what it is called.

This is not supported in java.

One thing you can do is inherit the generated class (if it is not final) and add your methods.

You could just use composition, ie:

If you do not have access to the generated class you could try to extend it (if generated class is not final) and add new methods to sub-class... Java doesn't support dynamic attributes as JavaScript.

I agree with #Itay I used to have auto-generated classes from Ibatis and the best way to go about with your problem is to extend all the generated classes and add the functionality that you want.

How is this interface being instantiated?

This is from the Minecraft server source code, also called the Minecraft Bukkit API, now you know as much as I do.
There is an interface called Server:

There is a class called Bukkit that instantiates Server:
public final class Bukkit {
private static Server server;
}
Inside methods in the Bucket class they invoke methods from the server object. For example:
server.getVersion();
The thing is, there is no code for getVersion in the Server interface, just a method signature. There is also no code in the PluginMessageRecipient interface nor does it extend anything.
I have read all the questions and answers on SO that say I need an anonymous class or an inner class and this does not seem to fit those solutions.
There is a class called Bucket that instantiates Server:
Actually Bucket doesn't instantiate Server. The class Bucket contains a reference to a Server. You haven't shown how that got set so we don't know the actual class.
However, it is guaranteed that what is assigned to that reference (Bucket.server), assuming it's not null, is a an object of some concrete class that implements Server. That class will provide an implementation of getVersion() and that is what is being called.
Bukkit is just a Modding API. If you want to implement Bukkit, you need to create such an instance yourself and pass it there.
Take for example the unit tests that Bukkit includes:

A real implementation that allows you to run a Bukkit server is Spigot.
If I recall correctly, the particular concrete class that's being selected is determined at runtime via reflection. Because Minecraft is not open source, all the developers have are the obfuscated compiled class files to work with.
The code searches through each class file within the minecraft jar, searching for a class that matches certain conditions, and then, using a bytecode library, force that class to implement that interface.
For example, let's say that the following (obfuscated) class was the real Server class within the Minecraft code

In this case, the method x_x317 returns the version string. The tool that allows them too hook into this class might do it based on the following conditions:
The class has default access
The class has only one default access static reference to itself
The class has only one default access static String field.
The class has a single method, that has default access, that returns String, and the returned value is the FieldRef found in 3.
This generally returns only one class. In the case that multiple are returned (usually in the dev phase of the new Bukkit version), they get more specific with their conditions to ensure that they only get the right class returned. They do this for every field, class, and method they need to identify.
Since they now know which exact class is the Server class, they can go ahead and make changes to it. First they would need to implement the interface

And then implement the method

Now, we have a class that conforms to the Bukkit API.
When they need to instantiate that class, they just do something along the lines of

When extending JAXBEqualsStrategy, generated equals is different than when not extending

We extend JAXBEqualsStrategy via pom:
<xjcArg>-Xequals-equalsStrategyClass=com.acme.foo.CustomEqualsStrategy</xjcArg>
The CustomEqualsStrategy extends JAXBEqualsStrategy. After running MAVEN clean install generate-source in Eclipse (Keplar) our model classes have equals method like this:

Whereas if we do not extend JAXBEqualsStrategy, our model classes have equals method like this:

return equals(null, null, object, strategy);
}
JAXBEqualsStrategy has
public static EqualsStrategy INSTANCE = new JAXBEqualsStrategy();
We expected to get
final EqualsStrategy strategy = CustomEqualsStrategy.INSTANCE;
in the generated equals method and are struggling to accomplish it.
You do not want to use CustomEqualsStrategy.INSTANCE. Using new CustomEqualsStrategy() is correct and should be preferred unless you have very good reasons for doing otherwise.
Since CustomEqualsStrategy extends JAXBEqualsStrategy, that means that unless you define your own INSTANCE field inside CustomEqualsStrategy, CustomEqualsStrategy.INSTANCE is the same as JAXBEqualsStrategy.INSTANCE, which means that you would be using an instance of JAXBEqualsStrategy after all.
Plus, using an INSTANCE field like that effectively signals that your class is meant to be used as a singleton, and thus has to be stateless. Most classes are not stateless, and even for classes that are, many such classes don't need to be used in a singleton style.
In short, really just stick with new CustomEqualsStrategy(). The code will have fewer surprises and you'll be happier for it. (Also, from reading the code for JAXBEqualsStrategy, perhaps you should be extending DefaultEqualsStrategy instead.)

So:
If the class of your equals strategy is known to the plugin in the runtime AND
Your class has a public static getInstance() method of the correct type OR
Your class has a public static field INSTANCE of the correct type
Then the plugin will use YourStrategy.getInstance() or YourStrategy.INSTANCE instead of new YourStrategy().
I guess you already have an INSTANCE method. Please try to include the JAR with your strategy into the XJC classpath (so that plugin could resolve your strategy class during the compile time).
Please also feel free to file an issue to support syntax like -Xequals-equalsStrategyInstanceField=com.acme.foo.CustomEqualsStrategy.INSTANCE or InstanceMethod accordingly.

Best way to pass arguments in constructor

I have a class that create rows in table layout. The row creation depend upon data and metadata. As metadata is same for each row like show/hide visibility properties etc. so I have created metadata property as a static and initialize once using initWidget of RowWidget.
just example:

As I thought this is not right approach. because as pattern when anyone see this class then understand it will create one row. I don't want to call initially initWidget. I want to pass each required parameter in constructor only like

Data data,
Data parentData,
Form form,
HashMap<Long, ContractorPermissionEnum> formModePermissionMap,
GridMode gridMode,
boolean isApplied,
boolean isChildExist,

But due to this, constructor have no of arguments. and I think it's also bad pattern to have 5+ parameter in constructor.

I would suggest builder pattern. You would need one extra class to create RowWidget objects. So the call would look like that:
RowWidget widget = new RowWidget.Builder().withData(data).withParentData(parentData).withDataRawType(dataRawType).build();

Why not create method which will accept the newValues for the properties you want to change & return a new instance of the classes with all other properties copied from the instance on which you invoked this method.
You could separate/extract the parameters from the RowWidget-class fro example in a RowWidgetConfig-class.

Now create once instance of that class and pass it among the other parameters to RowWidget constructor.
Another alternative would be to have factory for creating RowWidget instances. The factory would also contain all the parameters you need for a row instance plus a factory method createNewRowWidget witch creates an instance base on the parameters contained in the factory.

How to construct class which have same property required in another instance?
To achive this you can have a super class with all the properties you want. So any class extending this super class will be have these properties. This way you don't need to use static keyword.
What is best way to construct class with having some default fix property for all instances?
For this one you can have an interface with some constant properties. This way any class implementing this interface will be having the fixed properties.
The static initWidget() thing just doesn't seem right for me. Though probably now you will only have one set of RowWidgets which share some properties, it is also reasonable to have 2 sets of RowWidgets, each set will have its own "shared" properties. Things will be much more fluent and you have much more choices in building more reasonable APIs if you refactor your code to make a more reasonable design
Assume now I introduce something like a RowGroup (which kind of represents the "shared" thing you mentioned)

Even more important, the design now make more sense to me.
If you did not want to create another class, I'd suggest what A4L suggested.
Without creating another class, I would create constructor that takes all parameters and factory method that uses current instance as template and pass its own parameters to constructor parameter.
example (with obvious parts ommited)

Java Inheritance and Wrapping

I have a generated object that I want to:
Preserve existing functionality of without injecting into the constructor and rewriting every method to call injectedObject.sameMethod().
Add additional functionality to that generated object without modifying the generated object.

I think decorator pattern may help you: "The decorator pattern can be used to extend (decorate) the functionality of a certain object at run-time, independently of other instances of the same class"
Have you tried aspectj? http://www.eclipse.org/aspectj/doc/next/progguide/semantics-declare.html It's a bit complicated but so is your request.
If you can extract an interface from GeneratedObject, then it would be possible to do this using a dynamic proxy. You would make a proxy which implemented the extracted interface and ObjectWrapper, with an invocation handler which passed all calls to methods in the GeneratedObject interface through to the delegate, and sent the doThisWithThat() calls elsewhere.
Proxies aren't pretty, but the ugliness is at least well-localised.

Automatic factory registration

i'm just learning java, and i meet some problems.
Here we have simple factory pattern:

All products should register themselves at factory.
But before using this code, all Products classes should be loaded.
I can put Class.forName() somewhere, for example in main function.
But i want to avoid such sort of manual classes loading. I want just add new IProduct
implementations, without updating other parts(such as SomeFactory or Main methods, etc.).
But i wonder, is it possible to automatically load some classes(marked with annotation, for example)?
P.S I want to notice, that no other classes will be added at run-time, all IProduct implementations are known before compiling.

I finished with using Reflections library that provides run-time information, by scanning classpath at startup.
This is possible, but not easily. It would need to scan all the classes in the classpath to see if they have an annotation or implement the IProduct interface. See How do you find all subclasses of a given class in Java? for answers to such a problem.
I would do keep it simple and just have a list of classes to load, either in the factory itself, or in an external file (properties file, for example).
Have each product register itself, using a static block like this:
class MyProduct1{
static{
SomeFactory.register(MyProduct1.getClass());
}
..
..
}
An external property file can keep track of all Products.
Your main method can parse this list of Products and do a Class.forName("..").
This way you wouldnt need to code any specific product, just the property file keeps changing. Ah! yes adding security registration would also be a plus point.
Note: I'm just proposing an idea, I'vent tried it myself :)
