Image does not load in external WebBrowser (Firefox) - java

I have created dynamic webproject and i am using following code to upload the image and retrieve from the same location.now when i am trying to run the application in external browser it shows rectangle box instead of image.getting loaded in external web browser gives an error.

The process is roughly as follows:
Enduser requests a web page on a certain URL.
Webbrowser sends HTTP request to webserver on the given URL.
Webserver retrieves HTTP request and returns the desired web page as HTTP response.
Webbrowser retrieves HTTP response in flavor of HTML code.
Webbrowser parses HTML code in order to present it and encounters an <img> element.
Webbrowser attempts to download the image from the location as specified in its src attribute.
And there is where it fails. You specified a fixed local disk file system path which is only valid if the webbrowser runs at physically the same machine as the webserver (as would occur in development environment, but absolutely not in production environment). You can't and shouldn't expect that the enduser has the desired image at exactly the given location of his local disk file system. Even more, you can't and shouldn't expect that the enduser has a D: disk, let alone that the enduser is also running Windows.
You should instead be specifying a fullworthy URL in image's src attribute. Exactly the one as you would enter in webbrowser's address bar in order to see the image, starting with a http:// or https:// scheme.
There are several ways to achieve this, the two most popular ways are:
Expose the upload folder as a virtual host. This is to be done in server config. You didn't tell which one you're using, but let's assume that it's Tomcat like as many starters would use: open /conf/server.xml file and add the following element to the <Host> element:

The docBase specifies the root folder where all files reside and the path specifies the context path which you would see after the domain part in the URL. This way the images will be accessible through http://example.com/images/....

Create a simple servlet which reads the image from disk and writes it to the response after having set the desired response headers telling the browser about the file content type, length and disposition so that the browser knows how to deal with it:

Unrelated to the concrete problem, emitting HTML in a servlet is a very poor practice. You should use JSP for that. See also the Coding style and recommendations section of our servlets wiki page.
Have you further also thought about uploaded images which happen to have the same file name as an existing uploaded image?

Let's see in steps what should happen:
JSP is basically a view technology which is supposed to generate HTML output.
To display an image in HTML, you need the HTML <img> element.
To let it locate an image, you need to specify its src attribute.
The src attribute needs to point to a valid http:// URL and thus not a local disk file system path file:// as that would never work when the server and client run at physically different machines.
The image URL needs to have the image identifier in either the request path (e.g. http://example.com/context/images/foo.png) or as request parameter (e.g. http://example.com/context/images?id=1).
In JSP/Servlet world, you can let a Servlet listen on a certain URL pattern like /images/*, so that you can just execute some Java code on specific URL's.
Images are binary data and are to be obtained as either a byte[] or InputStream from the DB, the JDBC API offers the ResultSet#getBytes() and ResultSet#getBinaryStream() for this, and JPA API offers #Lob for this.
In the Servlet you can just write this byte[] or InputStream to the OutputStream of the response the usual Java IO way.
The client side needs to be instructed that the data should be handled as an image, thus at least the Content-Type response header needs to be set as well. You can obtain the right one via ServletContext#getMimeType() based on image file extension which you can extend and/or override via <mime-mapping> in web.xml.
That should be it. It almost writes code itself. Let's start with HTML (in JSP):

I used SQL SERVER database and so the answer's code is in accordance. All you have to do is include an <img> tag in your jsp page and call a servlet from its src attribute like this

Here 1 is unique id of image in database and ID is a variable. We receive value of this variable in servlet. In servlet code we take the binary stream input from correct column in table. That is your image is stored in which column. In my code I used third column because my images are stored as binary data in third column. After retrieving input stream data from table we read its content in an output stream so it can be written on screen. Here is it

You can also create custom tag for displaying image.
1) create custom tag java class and tld file.
2) write logic to display image like conversion of byte[] to string by Base64.
so it is used for every image whether you are displaying only one image or multiple images in single jsp page.

Download File to Downloads Folder From Server ActionForward/Struts/Java

I am trying to download a file from my web application in an ActionForward java class. I have looked at many examples to try different solutions but none have worked so far. My knowledge is limited and have spent a good amount of time to get this to work.
From my jsp page a link hits an action in my struts config which takes the thread to an ActionForward return type method on a java class.
I then take the passed in file name and grab it from an amazon s3 bucket. With the file downloaded from the s3 bucket I now have the file bytes[].
I need to then have the file download to the local machine as most files do (appearing in the downloads folder and the web showing the download at the bottom bar of the page)
After following some examples I kept getting this error
Servlet Exception - getOutputStream() has already been called for this
response
I got past the error by doing
response.getOutputStream().write
Instead of creating a new OutputStream like this
OutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
Now it runs without errors but no file gets downloaded.

I used SQL SERVER database and so the answer's code is in accordance. All you have to do is include an <img> tag in your jsp page and call a servlet from its src attribute like this

Here 1 is unique id of image in database and ID is a variable. We receive value of this variable in servlet. In servlet code we take the binary stream input from correct column in table. That is your image is stored in which column. In my code I used third column because my images are stored as binary data in third column. 1) create custom tag java class and tld file.
2) write logic to display image like conversion of byte[] to string by Base64.

How can I retrieve and display images from a database in a JSP page?
Let's see in steps what should happen:
JSP is basically a view technology which is supposed to generate HTML output.
To display an image in HTML, you need the HTML <img> element.
To let it locate an image, you need to specify its src attribute.
The src attribute needs to point to a valid http:// URL and thus not a local disk file system path file:// as that would never work when the server and client run at physically different machines.
The image URL needs to have the image identifier in either the request path (e.g. http://example.com/context/images/foo.png) or as request parameter (e.g. http://example.com/context/images?id=1).
In JSP/Servlet world, you can let a Servlet listen on a certain URL pattern like /images/*, so that you can just execute some Java code on specific URL's.
Images are binary data and are to be obtained as either a byte[] or InputStream from the DB, the JDBC API offers the ResultSet#getBytes() and ResultSet#getBinaryStream() for this, and JPA API offers #Lob for this.
In the Servlet you can just write this byte[] or InputStream to the OutputStream of the response the usual Java IO way.
The client side needs to be instructed that the data should be handled as an image, thus at least the Content-Type response header needs to be set as well. You can obtain the right one via ServletContext#getMimeType() based on image file extension which you can extend and/or override via <mime-mapping> in web.xml.
That should be it. It almost writes code itself. Let's start with HTML (in JSP):

Pictures uploaded with valums ajax upload and OctetStreamReader dosn't work in IE - Java/JSP

I'm having a problem with picture uploading in Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9 (haven't tested other versions). It works fine in FF and Chrome, but for some reason the picture is uploaded wrong when i try to upload in any versions of IE.
What i mean by that is that the file gets uploaded in the right directory with the right name, but i cant open it in any picture editing programs.
Furthermore when i open the picutre in Notepad++ i see that the picture got some meta data displaying like:

HTML file uploads use by default the multipart/form-data request encoding (this is in order to be able to upload multiple files and/or to mix normal input field values in one request). You're however not parsing and extracting the individual form data parts from the request body, instead you're reading and writing the entire request body plain unmodified to a file.

This is indeed not ever going to work. That you said that it works in FF/Chrome is beyond me. Perhaps you're misinterpreting the results or do not have tested it in those browsers with binary files at all.
You need to use Apache Commons FileUpload to extract the parts from a multipart/form-data request. Or, when you're already on Servlet 3.0, you could also use the Servlet API provided HttpServletRequest#getParts() method.

Unrelated to the concrete problem, you've another problem with the code posted so far. You're storing uploaded files in the web content of the expanded WAR. This is far from a solid permanent storage location. Everytime when you redeploy a new WAR, all those files will get lost. You'd need to backup them everytime which is plain clumsy and error prone. Rather store them in a fixed location outside the expanded WAR folder.
