Couldn't Connect to Database with Android - java

I am trying to execute the following code for retrieving data from database using web services:
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
getData();
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
public void getData(){
TextView resultView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1);
String result = "";
InputStream isr = null;
try{
HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httppost = new HttpPost("http://HOSTNAME/FILENAME.php");
HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httppost);
HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity();
isr = entity.getContent();
}
catch(Exception e){
Log.e("log_tag","Error in http connection"+e.toString());
resultView.setText("Couldnt connect to database");
}
//converting to string
try{
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(isr,"iso-8859-1"),8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null){
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
isr.close();
result = sb.toString();
}
catch(Exception e){
Log.e("log_tag", "Error converting result"+ e.toString());
}
//parse data
try{
String s = "";
JSONArray jArray = new JSONArray(result);
for(int i = 0;i<jArray.length();i++){
JSONObject json = jArray.getJSONObject(i);
s = s + "St.ID" + json.getString("StId") + "\n " +json.getString("StName") + "\n" + json.getString("StMail");
}
resultView.setText(s);
}
catch(Exception e){
Log.e("Log_tage", "Error Parsing Data"+e.toString());
}
}
But an error returns : Couldn't connect to database.
And here's the output LogCat:
11-14 20:10:35.057: E/log_tag(5323): Error in http connectionandroid.os.NetworkOnMainThreadException
11-14 20:10:35.057: E/log_tag(5323): Error converting resultjava.lang.NullPointerException: lock == null
11-14 20:10:35.057: E/Log_tage(5323): Error Parsing Dataorg.json.JSONException: End of input at character 0
I've added a php file on some web service and it's working well, but i think it's about the HttpPost URL, is there a specific format for the HttpPost URL or is it just the same URL as given in the web service ?
PHP file:
<?php
$con = mysql_connect("HOST","USERNAME","PASSWORD");
if (!$con)
{
die('Could not Connect:'. mysql_error());
}
mysql_select_db("database_name",$con);
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM table_name");
while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result))
{
$output[]=$row;
}
print(json_encode($output));
mysql_close($con);
?>
Please help with that.

There is no specific format for the HttpPost URL, it is just the same URL as given in the web service.
You must use AsyncTask to solve the "Couldn't connect to database" error.
Here is your code using AsynTask, also you have to set the text of the TextView in the onPostExecute method, like shown:
RetrievingDataFromDatabase retrievingTask;
TextView resultView;
String s;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
retrievingTask = new RetrievingDataFromDatabase();
retrievingTask.execute((Void) null);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
public void getData(){
resultView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1);
String result = "";
InputStream isr = null;
try {
HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httppost = new HttpPost("http://HOSTNAME/FILENAME.php");
HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httppost);
HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity();
isr = entity.getContent();
} catch(Exception e) {
Log.e("log_tag", "Error in http connection " + e.toString());
resultView.setText("Couldnt connect to database");
}
//converting to string
try {
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(isr, "iso-8859-1"), 8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
isr.close();
result = sb.toString();
} catch(Exception e) {
Log.e("log_tag", "Error converting result " + e.toString());
}
//parse data
try {
s = "";
JSONArray jArray = new JSONArray(result);
for(int i = 0; i < jArray.length(); i++){
JSONObject json = jArray.getJSONObject(i);
s = s + "St. ID" + json.getString("StId") + "\n " + json.getString("StName") + "\n" + json.getString("StMail");
}
}
catch(Exception e) {
Log.e("Log_tage", "Error Parsing Data" + e.toString());
}
}
class RetrievingDataFromDatabase extends AsyncTask<Void, Void, Boolean> {
#Override
protected Boolean doInBackground(Void... params) {
getData();
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(Boolean result) {
super.onPostExecute(result);
resultView.setText(s);
}
}

Problem solved and data retrieved by using #Carlo 's code and editing the following line of code:
HttpPost httppost = new HttpPost("http://HOSTNAME/FILENAME.php");
to:
HttpGet httppost = new HttpGet("http://HOSTNAME/FILENAME.php");
as mentioned in my code, i wanted to retrieve data from the URL not posting data.
HttpPost > used for submitting data to a specified resource.
HttpGet > used for retrieving data from a specified resource.
Thanks all for your help.

Java Android Studio

I am new to Android, I followed some tutorials online to create a login page with MySQL database hosted locally on my PC.
I am getting an error on JSONParser.java file says:
Error:(60, 61) error: incompatible types: List<Pair<String,String>> cannot be converted to List<? extends NameValuePair>
Here is the code in JSONParser.java
public class JSONParser {
static InputStream is = null;
static JSONObject jObj = null;
static String json = "";
// constructor
public JSONParser() {...}
// function get json from url
// by making HTTP POST or GET mehtod
public JSONObject makeHttpRequest(String url, String method,
List<Pair<String, String>> params) {
// Making HTTP request
try {
// check for request method
if(method == "POST"){
// request method is POST
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);

HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();

}else if(method == "GET"){

Also, I found this answer (Android strange error) but it didn't work
I would be thankful to consider this error and help me to solve that.
I know that maybe could be stupid but one error that was bother me was:
JSONObject.put(java.lang.String, java.lang.Object)' on a null object reference
This can happen even when you have not declared your json into your doInBackground.
So when you write your code don't forget to insert:
final JSONObject jsonresponse = new JSONObject();
Give your app permission to get connected to the internet in AndroidManifest.xml
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"></uses-permission>
The exception is thrown here:
try {
jObj = new JSONObject(json);
} catch (JSONException e) {
Log.e("JSON Parser", "Error parsing data " + e.toString());
}
json is null, and JSONObject can't be created. Please check why json is not assigned and remains null in this code:
String json = null;
// Making HTTP request
try {
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(
is, "iso-8859-1"), 8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
is.close();
json = sb.toString();
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}

Receiving JSON java.lang.string cannot be converted to jsonarray

im making an app for a website. It has an JSON API. The URL im trying to fetch the result from is: http://api.bayfiles.net/v1/account/login/<user>/<password>
I get the error: java.lang.string cannot be converted to jsonarray when logging the error using logcat.
My main activity is:
public class MainActivity extends SherlockActivity {
EditText un,pw;
TextView error;
Button ok;
private ProgressDialog mDialog;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

Why im i getting this error? When using the right username and password in the url you would get: {"error":"","session":"RANDOM NUMBER"}
And as you can see i try to fetch this number. Any help is much appreciated!
You are getting this error because in line
JSONArray shows = object.getJSONArray("error");
you are trying to get value for key error and treat is as an array, whereas it's not - it's an empty string. Therefore you need to get it as a string:
String error = object.getString("error");
Similarly, if you need to get your "session", you can get it with
String session = object.getString("session");
P.S. Note that this is assuming that your JSONObject object actually contains the object represented by the string in your question.

how send request from android form to localhost URL???

i want to send android form data to specific URL (like login.php page "this is a page of my website that will verification of form data from DB saved record")
See this tutorial and you are done
http://www.androidhive.info/2012/05/how-to-connect-android-with-php-mysql/
You actually need two Classes to do this
1. Your Activity
2. JSON Parser
Here is the sample code for two of them, you can modify it as per your own needs
public class JSONParser {
static InputStream is = null;
static JSONObject jObj = null;
static String json = "";
static JSONArray jArr = null;
// constructor
public JSONParser() {
}
// function get json from url
// by making HTTP POST or GET method
public JSONObject makeHttpRequest(String url, String method,
List<NameValuePair> params) {
// Making HTTP request
try {
// check for request method
if(method == "POST"){
// request method is POST
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);
httpPost.setEntity(new UrlEncodedFormEntity(params));
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
}else if(method == "GET"){
// request method is GET
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
String paramString = URLEncodedUtils.format(params, "utf-8");
url += "?" + paramString;
HttpGet httpGet = new HttpGet(url);
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpGet);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
}
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
try {
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(
is, "utf-8"), 8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
is.close();
json = sb.toString();
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.e("Buffer Error", "Error converting result " + e.toString());
}
Log.i("PHP Error", "["+json+"]");
// try parse the string to a JSON object
try {
jObj = new JSONObject(json);
} catch (JSONException e) {
Log.e("JSON Parser", "Error parsing data " + e.getMessage() + json);
}
// return JSON String
return jObj;
}
public JSONArray getAllMessages(String url, String method,
List<NameValuePair> params) {
