I'm a newb and I started out trying out some things, so I made a calculator that only required one line. It works when I do it in this format : Int space String space int. EG : 10 + 50. If I don't do spaces like 50+50 the program fails. Is there someway to recognise spaces in Java? Bare in mind that I'm a noob but I find that I did a great job that keeped me motivated. Here's teh code :

Scanner#next reads the next token from the input string based on whatever delimiter you have set for your Scanner object when you create it. The default delimiter is whitespace, so when you space out the operands and operator your program processes them correctly. You could set the delimiters for your Scanner as the operators.
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
input.useDelimiter("\+|\-|\*|\\");
and your program will function properly.
There are some convenience methods in Scanner that you're using now (i.e. nextInt()) but for your purpose you should probably just get the nextLine() and do some more complex parsing of the expression.
This is probably too much and I wouldn't make this my main focus right now if I were you, but eventually you may want to read up about formal languages and use tooling such as http://www.antlr.org/ for purposes like these.
The problem here is not with Java not handling white spaces right, the problem is with Scanner class which uses white space as a separator (way to distinguish different pieces) by default.
You can still use Scanner class but you'll need some basic Regular Expression knowledge to achieve what you're trying to do.
For Java beginner it would be better to do some basic string processing. You just need to do input.nextLine() and parse the string contents.

java.util.Scanner has many hasNextXXX methods that can be used to validate input. Here's a brief overview of all of them:
hasNext() - does it have any token at all?
hasNextLine() - does it have another line of input?
For Java primitives
hasNextInt() - does it have a token that can be parsed into an int?
Also available are hasNextDouble(), hasNextFloat(), hasNextByte(), hasNextShort(), hasNextLong(), and hasNextBoolean()
As bonus, there's also hasNextBigInteger() and hasNextBigDecimal()
The integral types also has overloads to specify radix (for e.g. hexadecimal)
Regular expression-based
hasNext(String pattern)
hasNext(Pattern pattern) is the Pattern.compile overload

Example 2: Multiple hasNextXXX on the same token
Note that the snippet above contains a sc.next() statement to advance the Scanner until it hasNextInt(). It's important to realize that none of the hasNextXXX methods advance the Scanner past any input! You will find that if you omit this line from the snippet, then it'd go into an infinite loop on an invalid input!
This has two consequences:
If you need to skip the "garbage" input that fails your hasNextXXX test, then you need to advance the Scanner one way or another (e.g. next(), nextLine(), skip, etc).
If one hasNextXXX test fails, you can still test if it perhaps hasNextYYY!
Here's an example of performing multiple hasNextXXX tests.

The code below is for a simple calculator with the four basic mathematical operators. It is a working program, it works as expected. However, I have a few questions to understand and improve both my program as well as my understanding of Java. here in my program, it accepts more than one character (+-*) but operates on the first char (+) only. I want to make sure more than one character is not accepted as input.
After successful execution of the program, how can I somehow let the user repeat the main method? I mean, a user adds two numbers, gets his answer and he wants to do another calculation, maybe multiply two numbers this time. I can ask the user for yes or no to continue but how do I take him/her back to the beginning? (will a loop work? how?)
A the end of the program I used two methods to output a message. The system.out.print works fine but the JOptionPane method doesn't display the message and the program doesn't terminate (I have commented it out). I would like to understand why?
Is the default case required in the switch? And Am I following the correct code structure? (the arrangements and uses of curly braces)

If you use console application and Scanner, only thing that you can do is read a String and check its length. In case you use Swing, you could implement KeyPressListener and proceed exactly after user press a button (but not for console application).

You can't repeat main method. In Java main method is been executing only once. To repeate your code, you could wrap whole main method content to the infinite loop or move the content to the separate method and call it from the loop in the main method.

JOptionPane works only for graphic application (Swing/AWT). This is not available in console. You have only standard input and output there.

No, default case is optional by JVM syntax. I remember, that e.g. in C++ there was reccomendation to place it (event empty), to exclude side effects of compilators. I do not know, is there such reccomendation in Java, but when I use switch, I prefer to always add it to exclude logical problem (but this is definetly optional according to syntax case). You use switch correctly.

1) you can check size of string input.next() .If it is one then continue else again prompt for operator choice .
2)I would suggest better create a different method and put all logic in it and call it the number of time you want or call infinite number of times.

I'm taking user input from System.in using a java.util.Scanner. I need to validate the input for things like:
It must be a non-negative number
It must be an alphabetical letter
... etc
What's the best way to do this?
Overview of Scanner.hasNextXXX methods
java.util.Scanner has many hasNextXXX methods that can be used to validate input. Here's a brief overview of all of them:
hasNext() - does it have any token at all?
hasNextLine() - does it have another line of input?
For Java primitives
hasNextInt() - does it have a token that can be parsed into an int?
Also available are hasNextDouble(), hasNextFloat(), hasNextByte(), hasNextShort(), hasNextLong(), and hasNextBoolean()
As bonus, there's also hasNextBigInteger() and hasNextBigDecimal()
The integral types also has overloads to specify radix (for e.g. hexadecimal)
Regular expression-based
hasNext(String pattern)
hasNext(Pattern pattern) is the Pattern.compile overload
Scanner is capable of more, enabled by the fact that it's regex-based. One important feature is useDelimiter(String pattern), which lets you define what pattern separates your tokens. There are also find and skip methods that ignores delimiters.
The following discussion will keep the regex as simple as possible, so the focus remains on Scanner.
Example 1: Validating positive ints
Here's a simple example of using hasNextInt() to validate positive int from the input.

Note how much easier Scanner.hasNextInt() is to use compared to the more verbose try/catch Integer.parseInt/NumberFormatException combo. By contract, a Scanner guarantees that if it hasNextInt(), then nextInt() will peacefully give you that int, and will not throw any NumberFormatException/InputMismatchException/NoSuchElementException.

Example 2: Multiple hasNextXXX on the same token
Note that the snippet above contains a sc.next() statement to advance the Scanner until it hasNextInt(). It's important to realize that none of the hasNextXXX methods advance the Scanner past any input! You will find that if you omit this line from the snippet, then it'd go into an infinite loop on an invalid input!
This has two consequences:
If you need to skip the "garbage" input that fails your hasNextXXX test, then you need to advance the Scanner one way or another (e.g. next(), nextLine(), skip, etc).
If one hasNextXXX test fails, you can still test if it perhaps hasNextYYY!
Here's an example of performing multiple hasNextXXX tests.

Note that the order of the tests matters. If a Scanner hasNextInt(), then it also hasNextLong(), but it's not necessarily true the other way around. More often than not you'd want to do the more specific test before the more general test.
Example 3 : Validating vowels
Scanner has many advanced features supported by regular expressions. Here's an example of using it to validate vowels.

In regex, as a Java string literal, the pattern "[aeiou]" is what is called a "character class"; it matches any of the letters a, e, i, o, u. Note that it's trivial to make the above test case-insensitive: just provide such regex pattern to the Scanner.

Example 4: Using two Scanner at once
Sometimes you need to scan line-by-line, with multiple tokens on a line. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use two Scanner, where the second Scanner takes the nextLine() from the first Scanner as input. Here's an example:

Summary
Scanner provides a rich set of features, such as hasNextXXX methods for validation.
Proper usage of hasNextXXX/nextXXX in combination means that a Scanner will NEVER throw an InputMismatchException/NoSuchElementException.
Always remember that hasNextXXX does not advance the Scanner past any input.
Don't be shy to create multiple Scanner if necessary. Two simple Scanner is often better than one overly complex Scanner.
Finally, even if you don't have any plans to use the advanced regex features, do keep in mind which methods are regex-based and which aren't. Any Scanner method that takes a String pattern argument is regex-based.
Tip: an easy way to turn any String into a literal pattern is to Pattern.quote it.

Integer.parseInt(string). If the string is not a number, you will get an exception. Otherise you can then perform your checks on that value to make sure it is not negative.

I am trying to write a code for one of those programs that responds according to your answers. I want to make it so that some of the variables are not case sensitive. For example if my variable x is equal to "Me" I want it to also equal "me". Is that possible?

Worth mentioning String#toLowerCase:
name.toLowerCase().equals("me");
Or simply use String#equalsIgnoreCase:
name.equalsIgnoreCase("me");
I think there is no way to do no case sensitive variable. From your code you want to threat answers in strings into a switch and do some action that depends on answer.
I think the best way is to take user input a use on that string upper method from string class.
YourString = YourString.toUpperCase();
