Java Web Server Application - java

I am learning how to make web applications and have just implemented a simple one that should display the current date on the web page. However, I am receiving an error while doing so. I ran it on debug mode with a breakpoint placed on: resp.getWriter().println(new Date());
Here is my Java Code:
package org.test.webapp;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.Date;
import javax.servlet.ServletException;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
public class TestServlet extends HttpServlet {
#Override
protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp)
throws ServletException, IOException {
resp.getWriter().println(new Date());
}
}
Web.XML file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd"
id="WebApp_ID" version="2.5">
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Test</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.test.webapp/TestServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Test</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/test</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<display-name>Example01</display-name>

<welcome-file>default.html</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>default.htm</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>default.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
</web-app>
This is the error I am receiving:

your serlvet class should reference a class name. so instead of this:
<servlet-class>org.test.webapp/TestServlet</servlet-class>
which is an illegal class name (that your server fails to find, hence the exception), try this:
<servlet-class>org.test.webapp.TestServlet</servlet-class>

Java Restful Web Service using Jersey implementation developed in Eclipse IDE not deployed and call on JBoss server

I have created a web service that uses Jersey implementation. It is working fine when using it locally in system. But, it creates problem when i deploy it on JBoss AS 7 server. Somehow i resolved that problem by adding following code in web.xml file :
<context-param>
<param-name> resteasy.scan </param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>
<context-param>
<param-name> resteasy.scan.providers </param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>
<context-param>
<param-name>resteasy.scan.resources</param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>

<servlet-class>com.sun.jersey.spi.container.servlet.ServletContainer</servlet-class>
<init-param>
<param-name>com.sun.jersey.config.property.packages</param-name>
<param-value>serviceClass</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>s1</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>

Is anyone have faced this problem ? If yes, then kindly reply.
Thanks in advance.
I was getting a similar issue and this is what made it work. I had to go through a lot of posts here in which it kept emphasizing the entries need to be set right in web.xml and for my case this is where the problem seemed to occur.
This was a piece of my service class:
package com.tel.rest.customer;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
import javax.ws.rs.*;
import javax.ws.rs.core.MediaType;
import javax.ws.rs.core.Response;
import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement;
import org.json.JSONException;
import com.sun.jersey.api.JResponse;
#Path("/PR/customers")
#XmlRootElement
public class Customer{...}
The web.xml was something like this:
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>index.htm</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>default.html</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>default.htm</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>default.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
<servlet>

<param-value>com.eteller.rest.customer</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Jersey REST Service</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/api/*</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<context-param>
<param-name>resteasy.scan</param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>
<context-param>
<param-name>resteasy.scan.providers</param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>
<context-param>
<param-name>resteasy.scan.resources</param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</context-param>
This was the error i was seeing:

To fix this I had to remove these line of codes from the web.xml to make sure that JBoss can do what it needs to do:
<init-param>
<param-name>com.sun.jersey.config.property.packages</param-name>
<param-value>com.eteller.rest.customer</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
Once i removed this from my web.xml I was able to deploy and use the services on my JBoss server.
Not sure if this helps but you could try it.

Ali.

HTTP Status 500 - Error instantiating servlet class example.webApp

I created simple servlet and deployed it to tomcat server but I got the following error: HTTP Status 500 - Error instantiating servlet class example.webApp

Sometimes, when creating servlet the class file may not be generated in build folder. We should clean the project then build. It worked for me.
http://i.hizliresim.com/OqYz0n.png
Try cleaning the project and run.
If you are using eclipse Project -> Clean
for NetBeans try Run -> Clean and Build Project
I think you should write in your web.xml
<servlet-class>example.webApp.Test</servlet-class> instead of <servlet-class>example.webApp</servlet-class>

I think somethin wrong in this section:
<servlet-class>website.web.HomeServlet</servlet-class>
Instead try:
<servlet-class>website.HomeServlet</servlet-class>
First of all, your web.xml lists TestServlet as the class name for your server, as opposed to HomeServlet.
Second, it seems that although your HomeServlet class is in package website.web, it's physically located in a folder called website, not website/web. I would be surprised to see this even compile correctly?

Could somebody explain what is the problem?
Try this configuration or rename your config accordingly :
I prefer to name the servlet as 'dispatcher' and it's context file as dispatcher-servlet.xml. It worked fine for me.
<servlet>
<servlet-name>dispatcher</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class>
<init-param>
<param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name>
<param-value>/WEB-INF/spring/appServlet/dispatcher-servlet.xml</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>dispatcher</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
The Servlet.init() errors mainly occur due to mismatching of versions of the Jar files of your spring MVC, Check out all your libraries by right click on the project>properties>build path, and remove any mismatched jar release.
Also delete the jar library from your lib folder.
Build the project again and the run it.
try this out:
servlet-context.xml:

Driver classes are loaded successfully by JVM, The exact problem is that you are using latest mysql server but old version of mysql connecter jar.
Recommendation:
Go to
download mysql connectro
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/3.1.html/
and download latest driver and put that to your WEB-INF/lib directory, restart the server
Good luck.
The mistake i have done is i did not include my jar file in the Web-INf\lib folder.
and
i did not include jar file in java build path. this can be done by right click your project, click properties, select java built path, libraries tab, choose add extenal jars and select your mysql connector jar file ..hope it helps some naive like me.
ps : there is no problem in the port where mysql service is running. the port is by default 3306.
