I have fixed this issue by deleting local .m2/repository folder. The build is successful now.


And mine has a different solution. I had a POM that had a <dependencyManagement> entry for the jar without any <version>, and it had a <dependencies> entry for the jar with a <version>. Plus, the parent POM had a <dependencyManagement> entry with the same <version>. Apparently this confused Maven (3.3). The build worked fine, but the packaging did not.
Fix: remove <dependencyManagement> entry in the child POM, and remove the <version> from the <dependencies> entry in the child POM.

If you look at your maven build output, there should be some warnings that say .pom is invalid, transitive dependencies (if any) will not be available. Delete all the artifacts corresponding to those poms and rebuild, you need not delete the entire repository.


recently I stuck with the same problem. I turns that assembly-plugin doesn't propagate/report errors with dependencies:

that's all what I've got from assembly-plugin. eg. compiler warns about the broken stuff:

Thus, if you've been stuck in this trouble, invoke mvn dependency:tree to troubleshoot the dependency.


I recently came across this building a spring boot 2.2 project.
Turns out the problem was an out of date maven-assembly-plugin. Our build specified 2.3 but spring boot's bom requested at least 3.1.1. Bumping to 3.2.0 (the latest at time of writing) fixed the problem.


Check your Maven version.
I had the same problem and nothing worked until I downloaded and installed a later version of Maven (from 3.2 to 3.6). This solved the issue for me.
Also I was using Java 11 and from what I see here:

If you would like to stay in spring boot space just set the pom packaging to jar

and add the spring-boot-maven-plugin to you build properties in the pom.xml file:

Your jar does not contain the dependencies such as spring-boot which it is looking for during runtime. You can build a consolidated jar with all the dependencies as outlined in this question.

If you are running spring cloud application, make sure your boot version matches

Mine was caused by a corrupt Maven repository.
I deleted everything under C:\Users\<me>\.m2\repository.
Then did an Eclipse Maven Update, and it worked first time.
So it was simply spring-boot.jar got corrupted.

The answer to the above question is "none of the above". When you download new STS it won't support the old Spring Boot parent version. Just update parent version with latest comes with STS it will work.

If you have problem getting the latest, just create a new Spring Starter Project.
Go to File->New->Spring Start Project and create a demo project you will get the latest parent version, change your version with that all will work. I do this every time I change STS.

Clean your maven cache and rerun:
mvn dependency:purge-local-repository

Here the packaging is jar type, hence you need to use manifest plugin, in order to add dependencies into the Manifest.mf
The problem here is that maven could find the dependencies in pom file and compile the source code and create the output jar. But when executing the jar, manifest.mf file contains no details of dependencies. Hence you got this error. This is a case of classpath errors.
Here you can find the details on how to do it.

Another option is to use the Apache Maven Shade Plugin:
This plugin provides the capability to package the artifact in an uber-jar, including its dependencies and to shade - i.e. rename - the packages of some of the dependencies.
add this to your build plugins section

May be your dependencies not build correctly. Check compilation issue in project.

I had the same problem and tried most of the solutions suggested above, but none worked for me. Eventually, I rebuild my entire com.springframework (maven) repository (by simply deleting .m2/org/springworkframework directory).
It worked for me.

In my case, I did remove maven nature manually from .project file while having the project opened in Eclipse. So what I'd to do was to add maven nature again using the contextual menu (roght click on the project > configuration > add maven nature). Afterwards, everything worked nice :D

Clearing metadata helped me or change the workspace.

You need to also copy the required dependencies next to your resulting jar and include them in the classpath. An alternative is to use maven-shade-plugin.

As suggested in a comment, double-check to see if the JAR file is really corrupt using jar tv <filename.jar>.
There are a couple of common causes for corrupt JAR files:
The file was corrupted by copying / transferring it the wrong way; e.g. using FTP in ASCII rather than BINARY mode.
The file system filled up while you were writing the file.
This is the ZIP64 problem. The original ZIP file format did not support more than 4GB in size. This was addressed by an extension to the format, but versions of Java prior to Java 7 did not support that.

There is a hard limit of 65535 entries in a ZIP file. Unfortunately, some Maven plugins does not entirely understand this limit. When you attempt to generate a JAR with too many entries, the result is a corrupt JAR file.

The first three explanations are unlikely in your case, for various reasons. That leaves a Maven plugin problem. One of the Q&As that I found said that this was fixed in version 2.5 of the maven-assembly-plugin. But you appear to be using a later version. So maybe this is not the problem after all.
Anyhow:
Check that you are using a Java 7 or later JRE or JDK on your build and execution platforms.
Try updating the version of the maven assembly plugin in your POM to the latest available.

Could not find artifact javax.sql:jdbc-stdext:jar:2.0 in central (https://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2)

I'm trying to build a REST API of web Services I created for my project.
My web services are working without problems.
Now, I want to Deploy my Services on a distant server and I need to generate the war file.
I'm using Java, Eclipse and Maven for dependencies. I tried to make a clean install and the only problem of failure is that :

You experience the problem because you are including artifacts that have only source packages available. The maven dependency for jdbc.jdbc is referenced as a binary.
Most probably you don't need to include that dependency because those interfaces are provided by the JEE containers that you run your WAR archive in. I would recommend removing the jdbc artifact with the exlusion part entirely.
You can browse as what is available at jdbc/jdbc folder at Maven Central. And indeed the extension for it has removed under javax/sql at Maven Central.

I believe this is because you listed the artifact as an exclusion in your pom. i.e

If you would like to stay in spring boot space just set the pom packaging to jar

and add the spring-boot-maven-plugin to you build properties in the pom.xml file:

Your jar does not contain the dependencies such as spring-boot which it is looking for during runtime. You can build a consolidated jar with all the dependencies as outlined in this question.

If you are running spring cloud application, make sure your boot version matches
cloud version. You can check the version compatibility matrix at the bottom of this page : https://spring.io/projects/spring-cloud.

Mine was caused by a corrupt Maven repository.
I deleted everything under C:\Users\<me>\.m2\repository.
Then did an Eclipse Maven Update, and it worked first time.
So it was simply spring-boot.jar got corrupted.

The answer to the above question is "none of the above". When you download new STS it won't support the old Spring Boot parent version. Just update parent version with latest comes with STS it will work.

If you have problem getting the latest, just create a new Spring Starter Project.
Go to File->New->Spring Start Project and create a demo project you will get the latest parent version, change your version with that all will work. I do this every time I change STS.

Clean your maven cache and rerun:
mvn dependency:purge-local-repository

Here the packaging is jar type, hence you need to use manifest plugin, in order to add dependencies into the Manifest.mf
The problem here is that maven could find the dependencies in pom file and compile the source code and create the output jar. But when executing the jar, manifest.mf file contains no details of dependencies. Hence you got this error. This is a case of classpath errors.
Here you can find the details on how to do it.

Another option is to use the Apache Maven Shade Plugin:
This plugin provides the capability to package the artifact in an uber-jar, including its dependencies and to shade - i.e. rename - the packages of some of the dependencies.
add this to your build plugins section

May be your dependencies not build correctly. Check compilation issue in project.

I had the same problem and tried most of the solutions suggested above, but none worked for me. Eventually, I rebuild my entire com.springframework (maven) repository (by simply deleting .m2/org/springworkframework directory).
It worked for me.

In my case, I did remove maven nature manually from .project file while having the project opened in Eclipse. So what I'd to do was to add maven nature again using the contextual menu (roght click on the project > configuration > add maven nature). Afterwards, everything worked nice :D

Clearing metadata helped me or change the workspace.

You need to also copy the required dependencies next to your resulting jar and include them in the classpath. An alternative is to use maven-shade-plugin.

maven assembly: unresolved compilation error

I've an application that uses Maven to build a JAR with the maven-assembly-plugin.
The project includes a list of dependencies and one of these is another Maven project.

The problem is related to the Java mail dependency. As you can see I've used com.sun.mail but I saw some other different libraries that correspond to javax.mail.
Maybe I'm missing something in my poms, such as configuration parameters or plugins.
I've also tried to put in my local repository a mail.jar that works fine in other projects but I get the same error.

The "Unresolved compilation problem" comes from a class file in your utils project that Eclipse has compiled, but where Eclipse was unable to compile it properly.
The reason you are seeing different results from Eclipse and Maven is that they are using different versions of the class file. Eclipse is doing workspace resolution, so it's using the version of SMTPMailService in utils/target/classes. Maven is resolving the utils jar from your local Maven repository, which was put there by running mvn install while you had compile errors in Eclipse.
Try running mvn clean install in the utils project (clean to remove any class files generated by Eclipse, install to replace the jar in your local repository). Then rebuild your assembly.
