I am trying to replace certain values from a string using java regex
for example the string looks like
:20:1234
6789
:28G::xyz
|20:3456
1234
|29C:pqr
:20|9876
I want to replace tag 20 value (may be multi line value) for second occurrence
|20:3456
1234
with new value(may be multi line value) 6789 so the final replacement string i am expecting is
:20:1234
6789
:28G::xyz
|20:6789
|29C:pqr
:20|9876
Try this regex:
String str = ":20:1234\n 6789\n:28G::xyz\n|20:3456\n 1234\n|29C:pqr\n:20|9876 \n|20:3456\n :20:1234\n";
str = str.replaceAll("(\\|20:)[\\s\\S]*?(?=[|:])","$1" + "6789\n");
Here it is checking until it reaches to anything other than | or :, so that it doesn't pick all.
This should work (tested):
str.replaceAll("(\\|" + "20" + ":)[^|:]*\n","$1" + "6789" + "\n");

If I use string.split(":") then it would not serve my purpose.
If a string is like:
:20: MY VALUES : ARE HERE
then It will split up into 3 string , and key 20 will be associated with "MY VALUES" , and "ARE HERE" will not associated with key 20 .
You may use matching mechanism instead of splitting since you need to match a specific colon in the string.
The regex to get 2 groups between the first and second colon and also capture everything after the second colon will look like
^:([^:]*):(.*)$

The ^ will assert the beginning of the string, ([^:]*) will match and capture into Group 1 zero or more characters other than :, and (.*) will match and capture into Group 2 the rest of the string. $ will assert the position at the end of a single line string (as . matches any symbol but a newline without Pattern.DOTALL modifier).

Try with split function of String class
String[] splited = string.split(":");
For your requirements:

However, rather than outputting: xxxhitherexxxxxxx like I want it to, it outputs: x1x2x3hxixtxhxexrxex1x2x3x4x5xhxix x, I've tried a load of different regex patterns to try to do this, but I can't seem to figure out how to do this :(
Any help would be much appreciated.
Well this technically works. Using only replace all and only one line, and it's assuming you string does not contain a deprecated ASCII character (BEL)
String string = "hithere";
String string2 = "asdfasdfasdfasdfhithereasasdf";
System.out.println(string2.replaceAll(string,"" + (char)string.length()).replaceAll("[^" + (char)string.length() + "]", "x").replaceAll("" + (char)string.length(), string));
I think this is what you're looking for, if I'm not mistaken:

The pattern replaces any numeric digits and the word "hi".
This lookaround based code will work for you:

You can try this:
text = text.replaceFirst("(Illinois Commerce(?s).*?)Illinois Commerce", "$1");
This should do it assuming it is following by whitespace or end of the string.
text = text.replaceAll("Illinois Commerce(?= ?$)", "");
Or the following will work for this case.
text = text.replaceAll("\bIllinois Commerce\s*$", "");
I would not use regex for this. What I would do is:
Find the index of first occurrence of "Illinois Commerce"
Get the substring from index + 1 till the end.
Replace the "Illinois Commerce" in that substring. That will make sure that I don't replace the 1st occurrence, because it will not be fully available in this substring.
Then concatenate the first part of the string with the resultant substring.
This is how the code would go like:
int index = text.indexOf("Illinois Commerce");
String result = text.substring(0, index + 1) +
text.substring(index + 1).replace("Illinois Commerce", "");
System.out.println(result);
text.substring(0, index + 1) will take the string till the I of the first Illi.....
text.substring(index + 1) will start from l of first Illi.... till the end of the string. So, the only string to replace is the 2nd occurrence.
Since there are only two occurrences, lastIndexOf may be better than a regex for this case.
Anyway, below are the regx and the lastIndexOf way to do it.

Use \\s+ instead of \\s as there are two or more consecutive whitespaces in your input.
string = str.replaceAll("\\s+"," ")
You can use replaceAll which takes a regex as parameter. And it seems like you want to replace multiple spaces with a single space. You can do it like this:
string = str.replaceAll("\\s{2,}"," ");
It will replace 2 or more consecutive whitespaces with a single whitespace.
First get rid of multiple spaces:

Here 3 specifies the beginning index, and 7 specifies the stopping point.
The string returned contains all the characters from the beginning index, up to, but not including, the ending index.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by extract, so I've provided the code to remove it from the String, I'm not certain if this is what you want.

Extracting CADA from the string makes no sense. You will need to specify how you have determined that CADA is the string to extract.
E.g. is it because it is the middle 4 characters? Is it because you are stripping off 3 characters each side? Are you just looking for the String "CADA"? Is it characters 3,7 of the String? Is it the first 4 of the last 7 characters of a String? Is it because it contains 2 vowels and 2 consanants? I could go on..

Probably, you don't take in account the fact of java.lang.String immutability. That's why you need to assign the result of substringing to a new variable.
