HyperLinkListener to cancel and save file - java

Issues:
When I keep contentType of textpane as text/html, then the text typed moves to the right, for ex : if type "asd", then 'Message:' appears on the left and 'asd' appears on the right of the textpane
When adding a file, how do I write a HyperLinkListener for this. I've commented 'Save' and 'Cancel' in the code. How do I get the name of what I click (Cancel or Save), so that I can write appropriate code for these two links?

How do I get the name of what I click (Cancel or Save),
Did you specify the URL for the Hyperlink?
The JEditorPane API show an example of how to access the URL from the HyperlinkEvent.

JScrollPane and JTextArea scrolling

I am outputting some logs into the a JTextArea enclosed in JScrollPane but the auto scrolling functionality when the output reaches the bottom of the textArea is not working. I have attempted several methods that I saw online but none works. Below is my part of my code so far.
JTextArea ouputLogPane = new JTextArea();
JScrollPane outputPane = new JScrollPane(ouputLogPane);
outputPane.setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS);
outputPane.setBounds(75, 501, 746, 108);
contentPane.add(outputPane);
Now I in another class am reading from a source file and appending log details to the textArea using the code below.
public void readFile(JTextArea outputLog, JScrollPane scrollPane){
count = 0;
while(moreLinesToRead){
if(count % 100 == 0){
outputLog.update(outputLog.getGraphics());
outputLog.append("Completed Reading"+ count + " Records "\n");
DefaultCaret caret = (DefaultCaret)outputLog.getCaret();
caret.setUpdatePolicy(DefaultCaret.ALWAYS_UPDATE);
outputLog.update(outputLog.getGraphics());
//tried the one below but did not work either
//outputLog.setCaretPosition(outputLog.getDocument().getLength());
}
count++;
}
}
Finally I am calling this method in the when a button is clicked as below.
JButton btnNewButton = new JButton("Start Reading");
btnNewButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
migrationUtil.readFile(ouputLogPane,outputPane);
}
});
So basically the complete output prints only after the execution finished. I read that I might have to use a separate thread to handle it but not very sure on how to proceed.

What you want to do is read the file in a separate thread, so that your Swing thread is not blocked by it, allowing you to update the text area at the same time.
You still need to update the GUI on the Swing thread however, so you do this by calling SwingUtilities.invokeLater(runnable).
Here is a working example (Note I added a Thread.sleep(200) so you can see it being updated):
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileReader;
public class ReadingExample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
JFrame jFrame = new JFrame();
jFrame.setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
jFrame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
JPanel mainPanel = new JPanel(new BorderLayout());
JTextArea jTextArea = new JTextArea();
JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(jTextArea);
scrollPane.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(300, 300));
mainPanel.add(scrollPane, BorderLayout.CENTER);
JButton btnNewButton = new JButton("Start Reading");
mainPanel.add(btnNewButton, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
jFrame.setContentPane(mainPanel);
jFrame.pack();
jFrame.setVisible(true);
btnNewButton.addActionListener(e -> {
new Thread(() -> {
File file = new File("file.txt");
try (FileReader fileReader = new FileReader(file);
BufferedReader bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(fileReader)) {
String line;
while((line = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null) {
final String fLine = line;
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(() -> {
jTextArea.append(fLine + "\n");
jTextArea.setCaretPosition(jTextArea.getDocument().getLength());
});
Thread.sleep(200);
}
} catch (Exception e1) {
e1.printStackTrace();
}
}).start();
});
}
}
There are two ways to scroll to the bottom. You can manipulate the scroll bar:
JScrollBar scrollBar = scrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar();
scrollBar.setValue(scrollBar.getMaximum());
Or, you can use the more reliable scrollRectToVisible method:
try {
textArea.scrollRectToVisible(
textArea.modelToView(
textArea.getDocument().getLength()));
} catch (BadLocationException e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}

Java, make JTabbedPane pop up

I would like my original window to close when someone enters the password and a new one to pop up, or if you have a better recommendation please tell me. Here is my code,
The main class,

import java.awt.EventQueue;
import java.awt.Image;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
import javax.swing.AbstractAction;
import javax.swing.Action;
import javax.swing.ImageIcon;
import javax.swing.JDialog;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
import javax.swing.JPasswordField;
import javax.swing.JTextField;
import javax.swing.border.CompoundBorder;
import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
public class mainPage extends JDialog {
private JTextField textField;
/**
* Launch the application.
*/
public static void main(String[] args) {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
mainPage frame = new mainPage();
frame.setVisible(true);

} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
}
/**

*/
public mainPage() throws IOException {

setBounds(100, 100, 560, 390);
JLabel contentPane = new JLabel(
new ImageIcon(
ImageIO.read(new File(
"C:\\Users\\Gianmarco\\workspace\\notebook\\src\\notebook\\cool_cat.jpg"))));
contentPane.setBorder(new CompoundBorder());
setContentPane(contentPane);
contentPane.setLayout(null);
JLabel lblEnterPassword = new JLabel(" Enter Password");
lblEnterPassword.setForeground(Color.LIGHT_GRAY);
lblEnterPassword.setBackground(Color.DARK_GRAY);
lblEnterPassword.setOpaque(true);
lblEnterPassword.setBounds(230, 60, 100, 15);
contentPane.add(lblEnterPassword);
security sInfo = new security();
textField = new JPasswordField(10);
nbTab notebook = new nbTab();
Action action = new AbstractAction()
{
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
{
String textFieldValue = textField.getText();
if (sInfo.checkPassword(textFieldValue)){
System.out.println("working");
notebook.setVisible(true);
//dispose();
}
}
};
JPanel panel = new JPanel();
textField.setBounds(230, 85, 100, 15);
contentPane.add(textField);
contentPane.add(panel);
textField.setColumns(10);
textField.addActionListener(action);
}
}
The password class,
package notebook;
public class security {
private String password = "kitten";
protected boolean checkPassword(String x){
if(x.length()<15 && x.equals(password)) return true;
return false;
}
}
The JTabbedPane class,
package notebook;
import javax.swing.JTabbedPane;
import javax.swing.JEditorPane;
import javax.swing.JList;
import javax.swing.JButton;
public class nbTab<E> extends JTabbedPane {
/**
*
*/
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
/**
* Create the panel.
*/
public nbTab() {
JEditorPane editorPane = new JEditorPane();
JButton btnNewButton = new JButton("New button");
btnNewButton.setBounds(480, 345, 40, 30);
editorPane.add(btnNewButton);
editorPane.setBounds(80, 45, 400, 300);
addTab("New tab", null, editorPane, null);
JList<? extends E> list = new JList();
addTab("New tab", null, list, null);
}
}
In my main class, on lines 76 - 82 (where the action event listner is located) I would like to have my current window close and a new window of notebook to open. I used dispose() to close the password window. Then I try to open the JTabbedPane with setVisible(), setSelectedComponent, and setSelectedIndex however I am either using them incorrectly or there must be some better way to do this because it is not working. Any advice is appreciated guys thanks for all help.
As already suggested by MadProgrammer and Frakcool, the CardLayout layout manager is an interesting option in your case. A nice introduction to several Layout Managers for Swing is available here: A Visual Guide to Layout Managers.
You can use the code below to get an idea of how it could work. I have made a few modifications to your main application class:
The main class now extends from JFrame (instead of JDialog).
A few more panels and layout managers are used.
In Java class names usually start with a capital letter, so I have renamed your classes to MainPage, NotebookTab, and Security.
Here is the modified MainPage class:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.awt.image.*;
import java.io.*;
import javax.imageio.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class MainPage extends JFrame {
private static final String LOGIN_PANEL_ID = "Login panel";
private static final String NOTEBOOK_ID = "Notebook tabbed pane";
private JPanel mainPanel;
private CardLayout cardLayout;
/**
* Launch the application.
*/
public static void main(String[] args) {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
MainPage frame = new MainPage();
frame.setResizable(false);
Image icon = new BufferedImage(1, 1,
BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB_PRE);
frame.setIconImage(icon);
frame.setTitle("Notebook");
frame.setVisible(true);
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
}
/**
* Create the frame.
* #throws IOException
*/
public MainPage() throws IOException {
setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE);
setBounds(100, 100, 560, 390);
cardLayout = new CardLayout();
mainPanel = new JPanel(cardLayout);
mainPanel.add(createLoginPanel(), LOGIN_PANEL_ID);
mainPanel.add(new NotebookTab(), NOTEBOOK_ID);
getContentPane().add(mainPanel);
}
private JPanel createLoginPanel() throws IOException {
JPanel loginPanel = new JPanel(new BorderLayout());
JPanel passwordPanel = new JPanel();
passwordPanel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(passwordPanel, BoxLayout.PAGE_AXIS));
JLabel lblEnterPassword = new JLabel("Enter Password");
lblEnterPassword.setForeground(Color.LIGHT_GRAY);
lblEnterPassword.setBackground(Color.DARK_GRAY);
lblEnterPassword.setOpaque(true);
lblEnterPassword.setHorizontalAlignment(SwingConstants.CENTER);
lblEnterPassword.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(100, 16));
lblEnterPassword.setAlignmentX(Component.CENTER_ALIGNMENT);
JTextField textField = new JPasswordField(10);
textField.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(100, 16));
textField.setAlignmentX(Component.CENTER_ALIGNMENT);
passwordPanel.add(Box.createRigidArea(new Dimension(0, 42)));
passwordPanel.add(lblEnterPassword);
passwordPanel.add(Box.createRigidArea(new Dimension(0, 10)));
passwordPanel.add(textField);
loginPanel.add(passwordPanel, BorderLayout.NORTH);
Action loginAction = new AbstractAction() {
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
if (new Security().checkPassword(textField.getText())) {

}
}
};

Java. GUI WindowBuilder scroll bar in text area doesn't work

I don't know why my scroll bar in text area doesn't work. I found many solutions in internet, but no 1 helped for me.
textArea1 = new JTextArea();
textArea1.setBounds(13, 28, 182, 199);
panel.add(textArea1);
JScrollBar scrollBar = new JScrollBar();
scrollBar.setBounds(205, 1, 17, 242);
panel.add(scrollBar);
I found that can't be Panel's layout Absolute, if I change It to Group layout the same.
What's wrong? Could you help me? Thank you.

You need to add the component you want to be contained within the scroll pane to it.
You can do this via the JScrollPane's constructor or JScrollPane#setViewportView method
public class ScrollPaneTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new ScrollPaneTest();
}
public ScrollPaneTest() {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
try {
UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
} catch (Exception ex) {
}
JPanel bigPane = new JPanel();
bigPane.setBackground(Color.BLUE);
// This is not recommended, but is used for demonstration purposes
bigPane.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(1024, 768));
JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(bigPane);
scrollPane.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(400, 400));
JFrame frame = new JFrame("Test");
frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
frame.add(scrollPane);
frame.pack();
frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
frame.setVisible(true);
}
});
}
}
Updated with proper layout
You should avoid null or absolute layouts, they will only hurt you in the long wrong.

Browse for image file and display it using Java Swing

My problem here is,
after clicking Browse button it displays all files in a directory to choose,
then the chosen image is displayed in GUI correctly. But When i click Browse button
for the second time, it shows the old image only instead of showing the new one. Please help me in this.
For reference, i uploaded the UI.

Each time a new image is selected, you're creating components unnecessarily and in error here:
public void setTarget(File reference) {
//....
panel_1.setLayout(new BorderLayout(0, 0));
panel_1.add(new JLabel(new ImageIcon(targetImg)));
setVisible(true);
Instead I would recommend that you have all these components created from the get-go, before any file/image has been selected, and then in this method, create an ImageIcon from the Image, and then simply use this Icon to set the Icon of an already existng JLabel rather than a new JLabel. This is done simply by calling myLabel.setIcon(new ImageIcon(targetImg));
Create an ImageViewer with method like ImageViewer.setImage(Image), display the image in a JLabel.
ImageViewer

import java.awt.event.*;
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.border.EmptyBorder;

/** Displays the image. */

/** Set the image as icon of the image canvas (display it). */

}

gui.setBorder(new EmptyBorder(5,5,5,5));
imageCanvas = new JLabel();
JPanel imageCenter = new JPanel(new GridBagLayout());
imageCenter.add(imageCanvas);
JScrollPane imageScroll = new JScrollPane(imageCenter);
imageScroll.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(300,100));
gui.add(imageScroll, BorderLayout.CENTER);
}
}
public Container getGui() {
initComponents();
return gui;
}
public static Image getRandomImage(Random random) {
int w = 100 + random.nextInt(400);
int h = 50 + random.nextInt(200);
BufferedImage bi = new BufferedImage(
w,h,BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
return bi;
}

// TODO Fix kludge to kill the Timer
