android app which has shortcut icons to specific apps inside it - java

-I have created an android app that has 2 buttons to download apks from internet server if not already installed on the device.
-I want to provide shortcut icons of these newly installed apps in my application.
I've seen a posts about launcher apps but they list out shortcuts for all apps. I want specifically for my 2 apps.
Is there a way to do it?
here's the code for existing app.
//MainActivity.java
package com.example.appcommunication;
import android.net.Uri;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.content.pm.PackageManager;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.Toast;
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
Button app1, app2;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
app1 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button1);
app2 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button2);
final boolean app1Installed = appInstalledOrNot("com.example.cameraphonegap");
final boolean app2Installed = appInstalledOrNot("com.example.webviewexample");
if(app1Installed){
app1.setEnabled(false);
app1.setText("App1 Installed ");
}else{
app1.setEnabled(true);
}
if(app2Installed){
app2.setEnabled(false);
app2.setText("App2 Installed ");
}else{
app2.setEnabled(true);
}
app1.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
System.out.println("App is not installed on your phone");
Log.d("NOT installed","App not installed on your phone");
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "App1 Not Installed ", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
Intent browserIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW,
Uri.parse("https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vyvypj9qxjanb/CameraPhoneGap.apk"));
startActivity(browserIntent);
}
});
app2.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override

// TODO Auto-generated method stub
System.out.println("App is not installed on your phone");
Log.d("NOT installed","App not installed on your phone");
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "App2 Not Installed ", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
Intent browserIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW,
Uri.parse("https://www.dropbox.com/s/r2z299661ibmhm/webviewExample.apk"));
startActivity(browserIntent);
}
});
}
private boolean appInstalledOrNot(String uri) {
PackageManager pm = getPackageManager();
boolean app_installed = false;
try {
pm.getPackageInfo(uri, PackageManager.GET_ACTIVITIES);
app_installed = true;
} catch (PackageManager.NameNotFoundException e) {
app_installed = false;
}
return app_installed;
}

// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.

}
}
//activity_main.xml

<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>

I implemented a workaround by saving the ic_launcher of these apps and using it as ImageButtons for launching the apps. But I need something automatic for the icons when I use the packageName of the apps..
//code for ImageButton:
ImageButton launchApp1=(ImageButton) findViewById(R.id.button3);
launchApp1.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if(app1Installed){
Intent LaunchIntent = getPackageManager()
.getLaunchIntentForPackage("com.example.cameraphonegap");
startActivity(LaunchIntent);}else{
Log.d("installed","App1 not installed on your phone");
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(),
"App1 Not Installed ", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }
}
});
// activity_main.xml
<ImageButton
android:id="#+id/button3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#id/button1"
android:layout_marginTop="100dp"
android:layout_marginLeft="20dp"
android:background="#null"
android:contentDescription="#null"
android:src="#drawable/app1" />

How about serving these images from the server as well? You can host the images(key values for the package name?) for these apps somewhere and list them inside a listview on your app?
This is the exact thing you want to implement but using a different method to achieve it then what you are trying to do.

Why my app is crashing on clicking any of the buttons?

I am trying to use intents but on clicking any of the buttons,the app stops working and terminates.I am a beginner and I couldn't find the reason.I am providing my xml file,java file and menifest file.Please someone help.
here is my xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
tools:context="com.example.shreya.intents.MainActivity">
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Set Alarm"
android:id="#+id/alarm"
android:onClick="setAlarm"/>
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Map"
android:id="#+id/map"
android:onClick="seeMap"/>
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Mail"
android:id="#+id/mail"
android:onClick="email"/>
<EditText
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="Email ID"
android:inputType="textCapWords"
android:id="#+id/address"/>
</LinearLayout>
And here is my .java file:
package com.example.shreya.intents;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.net.Uri;
import android.provider.AlarmClock;
import android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.EditText;
import java.util.Locale;
import static com.example.shreya.intents.R.id.alarm;
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
private Button mail;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
}
public void setAlarm(){
String message="Wake Up";
int hour=7;
int minutes=0;
Intent intent = new Intent(AlarmClock.ACTION_SHOW_ALARMS);
if (intent.resolveActivity(getPackageManager()) != null) {
startActivity(intent);
}
}
public void seeMap(){
String uri = String.format(Locale.ENGLISH, "geo:%f,%f", 28.699884, 77.273075);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
intent.setData(Uri.parse(uri));
if(intent.resolveActivity(getPackageManager())!=null)
startActivity(intent);
}
public void email(){
EditText mail=(EditText)findViewById(R.id.address);
String add=mail.getText().toString();
composeEmail(add,"shreya");
}
public void composeEmail(String addresses, String subject) {
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_SENDTO);
intent.setData(Uri.parse("mailto:")); // only email apps should handle this
intent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_EMAIL, addresses);
intent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, subject);
intent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_TEXT,"hello");
if (intent.resolveActivity(getPackageManager()) != null) {
startActivity(intent);
}
}
}
And finally this is my menifest file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#mipmap/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:roundIcon="#mipmap/ic_launcher_round"
android:supportsRtl="true"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme">
<activity android:name=".MainActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
You have to add parameter View view to your onClick methods.
For example:
public void setAlarm(View view){
}
Add that parameter to other onClick methods also: email and seeMap.
Under the hood, the system uses reflection to figure out the exact onClick method in the Activity and the system uses the following exact pattern to find the method: a public void method with the specified method name in the xml onClick attribute and has a single parameter View.

Android Studio: SearchView: error in searchView.setSearchableInfo(searchManager.getSearchableInfo(cn));

I'm a newbie working on an android app, following is the first screen of the app. I want my application to perform search using that search dialog box.
For this, I followed http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/search/search-dialog.html
But I was getting following error:
Logcat:
FATAL EXCEPTION: main
Process: com.example.shalini.circlelayout, PID: 19330
java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.example.shalini.circlelayout.MainActivity.onCreateOptionsMenu(MainActivity.java:69)
where line:69 in MainActivity.java is:
ComponentName cn = new ComponentName(this, SearchResultsActivity.class);
searchView.setSearchableInfo(searchManager.getSearchableInfo(cn));
I referred to this
Cannot get searchview in actionbar to work
and made changes but the same problem still persists. My question is why is it showing error in searchView.setSearchableInfo(searchManager.getSearchableInfo(cn)); line. I couldn't figure that out, I still think that error is arising due to some other part of the code, maybe searchresultsactivity.xml or SearchResultsActivity.java. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

When clicked on "Travels and Holidays" button, it shows the 3 travels names with their contact number.
I want to call that travels through the app. So if I click on particular travels, it should redirect to the call of that number.
Where am I going wrong? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your help
I believe the problem is
Intent intent = getIntent();
String message = intent.getStringExtra(MainActivity.EXTRA_MESSAGE);
before onCreate(). Intent needs a Context which isn't available until the Activity has been created. Remove those lines since you already have it in onCreate().
Also, when it crashes, post your full logcat because it will tell us, usually, exactly where and what the problem is.

Bluetooth adapter is remaining null in android

I have a problem while writing code of bluetooth adapter in android. Bluetooth adapter is always remains null. I have written code for that but I could not turn on the bluetooth.
My Code is as below
package com.example.bluetoothdemo;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.OutputStream;
import java.util.UUID;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.annotation.SuppressLint;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.bluetooth.BluetoothAdapter;
import android.bluetooth.BluetoothDevice;
import android.bluetooth.BluetoothSocket;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.TextView;
import android.widget.Toast;
#SuppressLint("NewApi")
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
String msg="Hello";/* Default message to be sent. */
BluetoothAdapter adpt=null;// Default it is set to null value.
public static String MacAddress;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
Button btn=(Button)findViewById(R.id.button_send);
final TextView tv=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.disp_msg);
btn.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
adpt=BluetoothAdapter.getDefaultAdapter();
if(adpt==null){
// Always this portion is generating errors.
tv.append("Bluetooth Not Available in device");
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Bluetooth is off",Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
else{
if(!adpt.isEnabled()){
//adpt.enable();
Intent i=new Intent(BluetoothAdapter.ACTION_REQUEST_ENABLE);
//startActivity(i);
startActivityForResult(i, 0);
tv.append("Bluetooth is turned on.");
}
}
byte[] toSend=msg.getBytes();
try{
final UUID applicationUUID = UUID.fromString("00001101-0000-1000-8000-00805F9B34FB");
BluetoothDevice device=adpt.getRemoteDevice(MacAddress);
BluetoothSocket socket=device.createInsecureRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(applicationUUID);
socket.connect();
OutputStream mmout=socket.getOutputStream();
mmout.write(toSend);
mmout.flush();
mmout.close();
socket.close();
Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), MacAddress, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}catch(IOException e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
}
My activity_main.xml file is as below:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<EditText android:id="#+id/edit_message"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="#string/edit_message" />
<Button android:id="#+id/button_send"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/button_send"
android:onClick="sendMessage" />
<TextView android:id="#+id/disp_msg"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/display"
/>
</LinearLayout>
My AndroidMenifest.xml file is as below:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.bluetoothdemo"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="8" android:targetSdkVersion="18" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.BLUETOOTH" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.BLUETOOTH_ADMIN" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.bluetoothdemo.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>-
I have created the .apk file also and run on my Micromax A89 Ninja phone but the error says that "BluetoothDemo has been stopped unexpectedly."
Please write the below line
adpt=BluetoothAdapter.getDefaultAdapter();
in OnCreate() method after this line,
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
