Reading new line as two characters - java

I have written a small program
class Test {

The program gives the length as 1 and treats \n as single new line character.
My requirement is to treat \n as normal string so with 2 characters (First character \ and second character n), what can be done to achieve it?
NOTE: 1) We can't change the string to add additional escape character.
2) We don't want to use any additional 3rd Party library

You can use the StringEscapeUtils utility class from commons-lang.
String s = "\n";
s = StringEscapeUtils.escapeJava(s);
System.out.println(s.length());
for (int i = 0; i < s.length(); i++) {

If you absolutely can't use a library like commons-lang, then you can write your own method to do it. You can browse through the code of the above class to see an example of how you can escape the string to account for different special characters.

As far as I know, you can't. The issue is that "\n" is one character. The single backslash is an escape.
char ch = '\n'; // <-- not two characters. it's one.

It's as simple as that:
Once you go past the line
String s = "\n";
s will contain a single new line character, and there's nothing you can do about it.
You can obviously create a new String and replace all new line characters by "\n", but I don't think that's what you wanted.

We can't change the string to add additional escape character.
I guess that is not possible because \n has a special meaning when used in String.
Escape the backslash with double backslash like this \\n
This shall give you length as 2
String str = "\\n";
System.out.println(str.length());
Or try using apache commons-lang's
StringEscapeUtils#escapeJava()

You could search through the string and replace all character versions of /n with //n.

*Note that replaceAll() will consume the extra backslash... if you simply call System.out.println(SpecialCharacter.NEWLINE.getCharAsString()); you will receive the output of \\n

I want to split the string "004-034556" into two strings by the delimiter "-":

An alternative to processing the string directly would be to use a regular expression with capturing groups. This has the advantage that it makes it straightforward to imply more sophisticated constraints on the input. For example, the following splits the string into two parts, and ensures that both consist only of digits:

This will split your string into two parts. The first element in the array will be the part containing the stuff before the -, and the second element in the array will contain the part of your string after the -.

Use org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils' split method which can split strings based on the character or string you want to split.
Method signature:
public static String[] split(String str, char separatorChar);
In your case, you want to split a string when there is a "-".
You can simply do as follows:
String str = "004-034556";
String split[] = StringUtils.split(str,"-");

Assume that if - does not exists in your string, it returns the given string, and you will not get any exception.
The requirements left room for interpretation. I recommend writing a method,
public final static String[] mySplit(final String s)
which encapsulate this function. Of course you can use String.split(..) as mentioned in the other answers for the implementation.
You should write some unit-tests for input strings and the desired results and behaviour.
Good test candidates should include:

With defining the according test results, you can specify the behaviour.
For example, if "-333" should return in [,333] or if it is an error.
Can "333-333-33" be separated in [333,333-33] or [333-333,33] or is it an error? And so on.

you don't really need regular expressions for your split
you happen to already use apache commons lang in your app
The easiest way is to use StringUtils#split(java.lang.String, char). That's more convenient than the one provided by Java out of the box if you don't need regular expressions. Like its manual says, it works like this:
A null input String returns null.
StringUtils.split(null, *) = null
StringUtils.split("", *) = []
StringUtils.split("a.b.c", '.') = ["a", "b", "c"]
StringUtils.split("a..b.c", '.') = ["a", "b", "c"]
StringUtils.split("a:b:c", '.') = ["a:b:c"]
StringUtils.split("a b c", ' ') = ["a", "b", "c"]
I would recommend using commong-lang, since usually it contains a lot of stuff that's usable. However, if you don't need it for anything else than doing a split, then implementing yourself or escaping the regex is a better option.
For simple use cases String.split() should do the job. If you use guava, there is also a Splitter class which allows chaining of different string operations and supports CharMatcher:

But do not expect the same output across all JDK versions. I have seen one bug which exists in some JDK versions where the first null string has been ignored. This bug is not present in the latest JDK version, but it exists in some versions between JDK 1.7 late versions and 1.8 early versions.
There are only two methods you really need to consider.
Use String.split for a one-character delimiter or you don't care about performance
If performance is not an issue, or if the delimiter is a single character that is not a regular expression special character (i.e., not one of .$|()[{^?*+\) then you can use String.split.
String[] results = input.split(",");
The split method has an optimization to avoid using a regular expression if the delimeter is a single character and not in the above list. Otherwise, it has to compile a regular expression, and this is not ideal.
Use Pattern.split and precompile the pattern if using a complex delimiter and you care about performance.
If performance is an issue, and your delimiter is not one of the above, you should pre-compile a regular expression pattern which you can then reuse.

This last option still creates a new Matcher object. You can also cache this object and reset it for each input for maximum performance, but that is somewhat more complicated and not thread-safe.
You can split a string by a line break by using the following statement:

You can split a string by a hyphen/character by using the following statement:

Please don't use StringTokenizer class as it is a legacy class that is retained for compatibility reasons, and its use is discouraged in new code. And we can make use of the split method as suggested by others as well.

In this answer I also want to point out one change that has taken place for split method in Java 8. The String#split() method makes use of Pattern.split, and now it will remove empty strings at the start of the result array. Notice this change in documentation for Java 8:
When there is a positive-width match at the beginning of the input
sequence then an empty leading substring is included at the beginning
of the resulting array. A zero-width match at the beginning however
never produces such empty leading substring.
It means for the following example:

we will get three strings: [0, 0, 4] and not four as was the case in Java 7 and before. Also check this similar question.

So you can choose the best option for you depending on what you need, e.g. return type (array, list, or iterable).

The easiest way is to use StringUtils#split(java.lang.String, char). That's more convenient than the one provided by Java out of the box if you don't need regular expressions. Like its manual says, it works like this:
A null input String returns null.
StringUtils.split(null, *) = null
StringUtils.split("", *) = []
StringUtils.split("a.b.c", '.') = ["a", "b", "c"]
StringUtils.split("a..b.c", '.') = ["a", "b", "c"]
StringUtils.split("a:b:c", '.') = ["a:b:c"]
StringUtils.split("a b c", ' ') = ["a", "b", "c"]
I would recommend using commong-lang, since usually it contains a lot of stuff that's usable. However, if you don't need it for anything else than doing a split, then implementing yourself or escaping the regex is a better option.
For simple use cases String.split() should do the job. If you use guava, there is also a Splitter class which allows chaining of different string operations and supports CharMatcher:

But do not expect the same output across all JDK versions. I have seen one bug which exists in some JDK versions where the first null string has been ignored. This bug is not present in the latest JDK version, but it exists in some versions between JDK 1.7 late versions and 1.8 early versions.
There are only two methods you really need to consider.
Use String.split for a one-character delimiter or you don't care about performance
If performance is not an issue, or if the delimiter is a single character that is not a regular expression special character (i.e., not one of .$|()[{^?*+\) then you can use String.split.
String[] results = input.split(",");
The split method has an optimization to avoid using a regular expression if the delimeter is a single character and not in the above list. Otherwise, it has to compile a regular expression, and this is not ideal.
Use Pattern.split and precompile the pattern if using a complex delimiter and you care about performance.
If performance is an issue, and your delimiter is not one of the above, you should pre-compile a regular expression pattern which you can then reuse.

This last option still creates a new Matcher object. You can also cache this object and reset it for each input for maximum performance, but that is somewhat more complicated and not thread-safe.
You can split a string by a line break by using the following statement:

Please don't use StringTokenizer class as it is a legacy class that is retained for compatibility reasons, and its use is discouraged in new code. And we can make use of the split method as suggested by others as well.

And as expected it will print:

In this answer I also want to point out one change that has taken place for split method in Java 8. The String#split() method makes use of Pattern.split, and now it will remove empty strings at the start of the result array. Notice this change in documentation for Java 8:
When there is a positive-width match at the beginning of the input
sequence then an empty leading substring is included at the beginning
of the resulting array. A zero-width match at the beginning however
never produces such empty leading substring.
It means for the following example:
String[] sampleTokensAgain = "004".split("");
System.out.println(Arrays.toString(sampleTokensAgain));
we will get three strings: [0, 0, 4] and not four as was the case in Java 7 and before. Also check this similar question.
One way to do this is to run through the String in a for-each loop and use the required split character.

As mentioned by everyone, split() is the best option which may be used in your case. An alternative method can be using substring().

Remove trailing substring from String in Java

I am looking to remove parts of a string if it ends in a certain string.
An example would be to take this string: "am.sunrise.ios#2x.png"
And remove the #2x.png so it looks like: "am.sunrise.ios"
How would I go about checking to see if the end of a string contains "#2x.png" and remove it?
You could check the lastIndexOf, and if it exists in the string, use substring to remove it:
String str = "am.sunrise.ios#2x.png";
String search = "#2x.png";
int index = str.lastIndexOf(search);
if (index > 0) {

Assuming you have a string initialized as String file = "am.sunrise.ios#2x.png";.

The endsWith(String) method returns a boolean determining if the string has a certain suffix. Depending on that you can replace the string with a substring of itself starting with the first character and ending before the index of the character that you are trying to remove.

If you want to generally remove entire content of string from # till end you can use
yourString = yourString.replaceAll("#.*","");
where #.* is regex (regular expression) representing substring starting with # and having any character after it (represented by .) zero or more times (represented by *).
In case there will be no #xxx part your string will be unchanged.
If you want to change only this particular substring #2x.png (and not substirng like #3x.png) while making sure that it is placed at end of your string you can use

\\. represents . literal (we need to escape it since like shown earlier . is metacharacter representing any character)
Since I was trying to do this on an ArrayList of items similarly styled I ended up using the following code:

If I have a list of images with the names
[am.sunrise.ios.png, am.sunrise.ios#2x.png, am.sunrise.ios#3x.png, am.sunrise.ios~ipad.png, am.sunrise.ios~ipad#2x.png]
This allows me to split the string into 2 parts.
For example, "am.sunrise.ios~ipad.png" will be split into "am.sunrise.ios" and "~ipad.png" if I split on "~". I can just get the first part back by referencing [0]. Therefore I get what I'm looking for in one line of code.
Note that image is "am.sunrise.ios~ipad.png"
You could use String.split():

Replace word with special characters from string in Java

I am writing a method which should replace all words which matches with ones from the list with '****'
characters. So far I have code which works but all special characters are ignored.
I have tried with "\\W" in my expression but looks like I didn't use it well so I could use some help.
Here's code I have so far:

I'm not sure why you use the StringUtils you can just directly replace words that match the bad words. This code works for me:

The problem is that these special characters e.g. $ are regex control characters and not literal characters. You'll need to escape any occurrence of the following characters in the bad word using two backslashes:
{}()\[].+*?^$|
My guess is that your list of bad words contains special characters that have particular meanings when interpreted in a regular expression (which is what the replaceAll method does). $, for example, typically matches the end of the string/line. So I'd recommend a combination of things:
Don't use containsIgnoreCase to identify whether a replacement needs to be done. Just let the replaceAll run each time - if there is no match against the bad word list, nothing will be done to the string.
The characters like $ that have special meanings in regular expressions should be escaped when they are added into the bad word list. For example, badwords.add("#\\$\\$");

How can I replace non-printable Unicode characters in Java?

The following will replace ASCII control characters (shorthand for [\x00-\x1F\x7F]):

The following will replace all ASCII non-printable characters (shorthand for [\p{Graph}\x20]), including accented characters:
my_string.replaceAll("[^\\p{Print}]", "?");
However, neither works for Unicode strings. Does anyone has a good way to remove non-printable characters from a unicode string?

Op De Cirkel is mostly right. His suggestion will work in most cases:
myString.replaceAll("\\p{C}", "?");
But if myString might contain non-BMP codepoints then it's more complicated. \p{C} contains the surrogate codepoints of \p{Cs}. The replacement method above will corrupt non-BMP codepoints by sometimes replacing only half of the surrogate pair. It's possible this is a Java bug rather than intended behavior.
Using the other constituent categories is an option:
myString.replaceAll("[\\p{Cc}\\p{Cf}\\p{Co}\\p{Cn}]", "?");
However, solitary surrogate characters not part of a pair (each surrogate character has an assigned codepoint) will not be removed. A non-regex approach is the only way I know to properly handle \p{C}:

You may be interested in the Unicode categories "Other, Control" and possibly "Other, Format" (unfortunately the latter seems to contain both unprintable and printable characters).
In Java regular expressions you can check for them using \p{Cc} and \p{Cf} respectively.
I have used this simple function for this:

Based on the answers by Op De Cirkel and noackjr, the following is what I do for general string cleaning: 1. trimming leading or trailing whitespaces, 2. dos2unix, 3. mac2unix, 4. removing all "invisible Unicode characters" except whitespaces:
