I would implement the nav drawer with supportv7 library so i will use the app even with 2.3 Android.. I can't do it.. I follow some example but still have errors.. This is what i have written so far:
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
CustomDrawerAdapter adapter;
List<DrawerItem> dataList;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
/** Customizzo la actionbar */
ActionBar actionBar = getSupportActionBar();
actionBar.setCustomView(R.layout.actionbarcustom);
setTitle("Hi");
int actionBarTitleId = Resources.getSystem().getIdentifier("action_bar_title", "id", "android");
if (actionBarTitleId > 0) {
TextView title = (TextView) findViewById(actionBarTitleId);
if (title != null) {
title.setTextColor(Color.WHITE);
}
}
// Initializing
dataList = new ArrayList<DrawerItem>();
mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle();
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow,
GravityCompat.START);
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("Hi All")); // adding a header to the list
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("News", R.drawable.news));
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("Second Tab", R.drawable.arrow));
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("Third tab", R.drawable.high_importance));
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("4 tab", R.drawable.star));
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("5 Tab", R.drawable.spam));
dataList.add(new DrawerItem("6 Tab", R.drawable.group));
adapter = new CustomDrawerAdapter(this, R.layout.custom_drawer_item,
dataList);
mDrawerList.setAdapter(adapter);
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(this, mDrawerLayout,
R.drawable.ic_drawer, R.string.drawer_open,
R.string.drawer_close) {
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu();
}
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu();
}
};
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
if (savedInstanceState == null) {
if (dataList.get(0).isSpinner()
& dataList.get(1).getTitle() != null) {
SelectItem(2);
} else if (dataList.get(0).getTitle() != null) {
SelectItem(1);
} else {
SelectItem(0);
}
}
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
public void SelectItem(int possition) {
Fragment fragment = null;
Bundle args = new Bundle();

case 4:

case 5:
fragment = new FragmentOne();
break;
case 6:
fragment = new FragmentTwo();
break;
default:
break;
}
fragment.setArguments(args);
FragmentManager frgManager = getSupportFragmentManager();
FragmentTransaction ft = frgManager.beginTransaction();
ft.replace(R.id.content_frame, fragment)
.commit();
mDrawerList.setItemChecked(possition, true);
setTitle(dataList.get(possition).getItemName());
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(mDrawerList);
}
#Override
public void setTitle(CharSequence title) {
mTitle = title;
getActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
}
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
#Override
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) {
super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
// Pass any configuration change to the drawer toggles
mDrawerToggle.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if (mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
switch (item.getItemId()){
case R.id.action_settings:
Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, settings.class);
startActivity(i);
return true;
}
return false;
}
private class DrawerItemClickListener implements
ListView.OnItemClickListener {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position,
long id) {
if (dataList.get(position).getTitle() == null) {
SelectItem(position);
}
}
}
}
these are the imports:
import android.app.*;
import android.content.*;
import android.content.res.*;
import android.graphics.*;
import android.os.*;
import android.support.v4.app.FragmentTransaction;
import android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;
import android.support.v4.view.*;
import android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout;
import android.view.*;
import android.widget.*;
import com.readystatesoftware.systembartint.*;
import java.util.*;
import android.support.v4.app.FragmentManager;
import android.support.v7.app.*;
import android.support.v7.app.ActionBar;
import android.support.v7.app.ActionBarActivity;
The errors are in these lines:
fragment.setArguments(args);
FragmentManager frgManager = getSupportFragmentManager();
FragmentTransaction ft = frgManager.beginTransaction();
ft.replace(R.id.content_frame, fragment)
.commit();
seems that the method is not applicable to android.app.Fragment.. I tried in every way without success.. Is there something else to change?
You need to use Fragment class from support library. SupportFragmentManager works with android.support.v4.app.Fragment and not with android.app.Fragment
You need to be extra careful with wild card imports. In your case, importing android.app.* causes the problem since android.app.Fragment is part of the package.
You need to make sure you are importing android.support.v4.app.Fragment instead, to match the arguments of FragmentTransaction.replace(int, Fragment).

in my NavigationDrawerFragment.java
i have this code
expListView.setOnChildClickListener(new ExpandableListView.OnChildClickListener() {
#Override
public boolean onChildClick(ExpandableListView parent, View v,
int groupPosition, int childPosition, long id) {
String header = listDataHeader.get(groupPosition);
Category child = listDataChild.get(header).get(childPosition);
// child.name to get the name
// child.id to get the id
//Toast.makeText(getActivity(),"ChildNme: "+child.name+" ChildId: "+child.id, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
selectItem(1);
return false;
}
});
after i click the child, i set selectItem to 1
the selectItem(1) will go to MainActivity.java
public void onNavigationDrawerItemSelected(int position) {
// update the main content by replacing fragments
FragmentManager fragmentManager = getFragmentManager();
// NEW STUFF
if(position == 1){
fragmentManager.beginTransaction()
.replace(R.id.container, CategoryFragment.newInstance())
.commit();
}
}
my question is how to pass the child.name and child.id from NavigationDrawerFragment.java to MainActivity.java then pass to CategoryFragment?
or any other solution to pass the child.name and child.id to CategoryFragment.

update your selectitem() and onNavigationDrawerItemSelected methods to accept two more arguments i.e child.id and child.name
private void selectItem(int position,String id,String name) {
mCurrentSelectedPosition = position;
if (mDrawerListView != null) {
mDrawerListView.setItemChecked(position, true);
}
if (mDrawerLayout != null) {
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(mFragmentContainerView);
}
if (mCallbacks != null) {
mCallbacks.onNavigationDrawerItemSelected(position,id,name);
}
}
pass child.id and child.name in selectItem() method so which in turn will call onNavigationDrawerItemSelected() method implemented in MainActivity.
Now in MainActivity, pass the values to the fragment using Bundle
here
fragmentManager.beginTransaction()
.replace(R.id.container, CategoryFragment.newInstance(id,name))
.commit();
you will also need to update to CategoryFragment.newInstance(String,String) to accept the arguments
Updating code to 'setText' in 'edittext'
In your 'CategoryFragment' 'newInstance' method pass data in bundle like below
CategoryFragment categoryfragment = new CategoryFragment()
Bundle bundle = new Bundle()
bundle.putStringExtra("id",id)
bundle.putStringExtra("name",name)
categoryfragment.setArguements(bundle)
return categoryfragment
Now in onCreateView of Categoryfragment get this data like below
if(getArguments().getExtras != null) {
String catid = getArguments.getStringExtra("id");
String catname = getArguments.getStringExtra("name");
yourEditText.setText(catname);
}
Hope you got my point
i use android studio 1.2 and i just want to know how to add submenu or what they call ExpandableListView under my category?
hope someone can help me..

please help me.. im new to android..
i use the built in navigation drawer activity of android studio..
check below image for sample of what i want..
I'm not sure what you mean by category, but in your layout file (either activity_main.xml or fragment_navigation_drawer.xml) you need to add:
<ExpandableListView
android:id="#+id/list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
and in the code:
ExpandableListView list = (ExpandableListView) findViewById(R.id.list);
list.setAdapter(myAdapter);
where myAdapter is a custom class implementing ExpandableListAdapter (see http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ExpandableListAdapter.html)
You can extend one of the existing implementation like SimpleExpandableListAdapter, or BaseExpandableListAdapter if you need something more complicated.

}
The problem comes when selecting the menu item, I get the following error
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.main.impact.HomeFragment
This is a bit new to me so I'm not sure exactly what else to include, needless to say that i'll update the question should that be required. Thanks in advance.
First of all thanks a lot to everyone who helped me out with this. I've managed to get this error sorted.
The problem was with using SherlockFragment. I simply changed my fragments to extend android.support.v4.app.Fragment and made the following change to displayView in my main activity
if (fragment != null) {
FragmentManager fragmentManager = getSupportFragmentManager();
FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction = fragmentManager.beginTransaction();
fragmentTransaction.replace(R.id.frame_container, fragment);
fragmentTransaction.commit();
...
In the mTitle is not showing effect on the toolbar when a fragment is selected according to the fragment name specified in mTitle. It is just showing the app name in every fragment. please help!!!!

Fix the code above.
Your "events" Fragment class never calls onSectionAttached, this is a part of the implementation for the interface in PlaceholderFragment, which is created as a guideline. You should code your Fragments in a similar fashion and implement their corresponding interfaces.
Inside your Fragment:
events.java
import android.app.Fragment;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.LayoutInflater;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.ViewGroup;
/**
* Created by sukhvir on 17/04/2015.
*/
public class events extends android.support.v4.app.Fragment {
public events(){}
private static final int ARG_SECTION_NUMBER = 5;
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater,
ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
/**
* Inflate the layout for this fragment
*/
return inflater.inflate(
R.layout.events, container, false);
}
#Override
public void onAttach(Activity activity) {
super.onAttach(activity);
((MainActivity) activity).onSectionAttached(
ARG_SECTION_NUMBER);
}
}
and in:
MainActivity.java
public void onSectionAttached(int number) {
switch (number) {
case 1:
mTitle = getString(R.string.home);
break;
case 2:
mTitle = getString(R.string.academics);
break;
case 3:
mTitle = getString(R.string.about);
break;
case 4:
mTitle = getString(R.string.student);
break;
case 5:
mTitle = getString(R.string.alumni);
break;
case 6:
mTitle = getString(R.string.events);
break;
case 7:
mTitle = getString(R.string.media);
break;
case 8:
mTitle = getString(R.string.contact);
break;
}
setTitle();
}
private void setTitle() {
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
}
I hope you get the idea.
The code above just works, you might want to understand the flow and clean up.

.replace(R.id.container, fragment)
.commit();
}
However, when I run it, all I see is a blank screen. No header, drawer, nothing.
I really don't understand this at all. I've spent many hours of googling, where people just used the switch on the position to do essentially what I did.
Many thanks in advance. I'm really lost right now.
Try something like this I hope it will work.
private void displayView(int position) {
// update the main content by replacing fragments
Fragment fragment = null;
switch (position) {
case 0:
fragment = new HomeFragment();
break;
case 1:
fragment = new FindPeopleFragment();
break;
default:
break;
}
if (fragment != null) {
FragmentManager fragmentManager = getFragmentManager();
fragmentManager.beginTransaction().replace(R.id.frame_container, fragment).commit();
// update selected item and title, then close the drawer
mDrawerList.setItemChecked(position, true);
mDrawerList.setSelection(position);
setTitle(navMenuTitles[position]);
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(mDrawerList);
}
else
{
// error in creating fragment
Log.e("MainActivity", "Error in creating fragment");
}
}
And HomeFragment code is below:
public class HomeFragment extends Fragment {
public HomeFragment(){}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_home, container, false);
return rootView;
}
}
