What causes and what are the differences between NoClassDefFoundError and ClassNotFoundException?

Closed 4 years ago.
I have a servlet that calls the Jasper report class.
protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,
HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
ReportGeneratorModel.generateReport();
response.sendRedirect("report.jsp");
}
The ReportGeneratorModel calls a MYSQL database and then generates a report.
public static void generateReport() {
Connection connection = null;
try {
Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/cleanhandsreport?"+"user=Manager&password=PASSWORD");
} catch (SQLException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
return;
} catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
return;
}
JasperReportBuilder report = DynamicReports.report();//a new report
report
.columns(
Columns.column("HospitalID", "HospitalID", DataTypes.stringType()),
Columns.column("GroupID", "GroupID", DataTypes.stringType()),
Columns.column("HandWashViolation", "HandWashViolation", DataTypes.stringType()))
.title(//title of the report
Components.text("CleanHands Report")
.setHorizontalAlignment(HorizontalAlignment.CENTER))
.pageFooter(Components.pageXofY())//show page number on the page footer
.setDataSource("SELECT HospitalID, GroupID, Time, HandWashViolation FROM report",
connection);
try {
//show the report
report.show();
//export the report to a pdf file
report.toPdf(new FileOutputStream("report.pdf"));
} catch (DRException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
I am receiving the following error

I have all the jar files from the dynamicreports-4.0.0/lib folder and also the dynamicreports-core-4.0.0.jar in my Classpath.
When I try the report as an stand alone Java Application, everything works fine.
I tried to add some logs in the generateReport() method. None of them is getting printed, even though they are placed at the top of the method.
Any pointers on the problem is much appreciated.
I got the web application running. The problem was with the jar file placement. For a web-app, all the jars should be placed within the WEB-INF/lib directory for Tomcat to read/recognize the jars.
I Kindly request the Admins to CLOSE the question. Cheers.

i have a class store. I connect jdbc in init. I insert values in usertable in a method insertuser. My connection object is pointing to null. My usertable has five varchar values in a database called Register. Why my connection object is pointing to null.I have jdbc jar connected to my classpath.
If the Store constructor encounters any exception, it will print a stacktrace and return a partially constructed Store object with a null in the connection field.
That would explain what you are seeing. But we can't tell you the cause of the exception you are catching without seeing the (complete) stacktrace. Typical explanations for this kind of thing include:
Database driver JAR not the classpath (correctly)
Incorrect database driver JAR
Incorrect database credentials
Incorrect database host or port information
Network problems
Things you could fix:
As commenters pointed out, the exception handling in your constructor is broken. If you get an exception while setting up the connection, the constructor should terminate with an exception. The caller needs to deal with it, or allow it to propagate.
If you use DriverManager.getConnection you shouldn't need to use Class.forName to load the JDBC driver. The DriverManager infrastructure will find the driver for itself, based on what the jdbc URL says.
You need to add the jar file containing the class com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver to your war file's WEB-INF/lib folder.
I am having an issue and I broke my head for the last 4-5 hours debugging and finally reaching out for help here. I have a simple file upload servlet that uses Apache Commons ServletFileUpload and on detecting the file, it processes the content and generates output file. The code runs fine and generates output file that I can save but on Tomcat logs, I see Stream Closed error for every request. When I run the same on Jetty in GAE, there is no Stream Closed error. Finally, I just downloaded 100 MB JBoss AS server and there are no errors for the same codebase in JBoss too. However, our client uses Tomcat and we need to resolve this for tomcat. Tested in Tomcat 7.0.59, 7.0.62 and in 7.0.82 with same error. Code and Exception are as below. Any and all help is highly appreciated.
public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse response)
throws IOException
{
ServletFileUpload upload = new ServletFileUpload();
FileItemIterator iter;
String outFile = null;
try
{
iter = upload.getItemIterator(req);
while (iter.hasNext()) {
FileItemStream item = iter.next();
String name = item.getFieldName();
InputStream stream = item.openStream();
if (item.isFormField())
{
//Log the form field names
}
else
{
// File processing here.
System.out.println("Uploaded file field: " + name + " with file name: "
+ item.getName());
try{
fileName = item.getName();
response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment;filename=" + outFile);
ServletOutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
ZipInputStream zis = new ZipInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(stream));
processRequest(zis, out);
req.setAttribute("fileName", outFile);
}
catch(Exception e)
{
log.error(e,e);
}
}
}
}
catch (FileUploadException e)
{
log.error(e,e);
}
catch(Exception e1)
{
log.error(e1,e1);
}
}
}
The exception line 46 refers to the statement

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot (forward | sendRedirect | create session) after response has been committed

Closed 6 years ago.
I am trying to catch exception in servlet filter and the forward to an error page.
But when I catched the exception in filter and using request.getRequestDispatcher("/error.html").forward(request, response); to forward to the error page it is throwing me the error saying Cannot forward after response has been committed.
Code:
public class TestFilter implements Filter {
private String encoding = null;
public void destroy() {
encoding = null;
}
#Override
public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response,
FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
try {
chain.doFilter(request, response);
double value = 1/0;// to make an exception
} catch (Exception e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
request.getRequestDispatcher("/error.html").forward(request, response);
}
}
#Override
public void init(FilterConfig arg0) throws ServletException {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
}

I made the ArithmeticException to specify the problem. If I move the code double value = 1/0; before chain.doFilter(request, response);,it will not throw Cannot forward after response has been committed exception.
I don't know how to fix the problem. If an exception occurs after chain.doFilter(request, response);, how can I catch it and forward to another page?
just a guess: you need to swap chain.doFilter(request, response); and double value = 1/0; because at the moment you rise the exception after your servlet has done the work:
try {
double value = 1/0;// to make an exception
chain.doFilter(request, response);
} catch (Exception e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
request.getRequestDispatcher("/error.html").forward(request, response);
}
As my topic says, the max_allowed_packet variable is not working.
I have a project in eclipse which loads csv-files up and store them into a mysql database through a servlet. For files smaller than 1M it works fine.
But my file is 95Mb big, and i have increase the 'max_allow_packet' variable in the my.ini file in the section [mysqld] up to 500M.
But it doesen't work. Eclipse gives my the same error.
Please take a look at this two pictures:
ECLIPSE
my.ini
[mysqld]
....
Thanks for help
*****EDIT*****

***** EDIT 2 *****
Ok, now i have set the varibale also in de [client] section of the my.ini file. Seems to be work.
But now i got this error code:
com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLSyntaxErrorException: The size of BLOB/TEXT data inserted in one transaction is greater than 10% of redo log size. Increase the redo log size using innodb_log_file_size.

I've set the varibable like this:
[mysqld]
innodb_file_per_table=1
innodb_buffer_pool_size=1GB
innodb_log_file_size=128M
innodb_log_buffer_size=8M
Check points
Have you restarted mysql service after changing my.ini?
Run query SHOW GLOBAL VARIABLES LIKE 'max_allowed_packet' and see the value. It should be 500MB (Equal bytes)
If the above query does not return 500M, then try running SET GLOBAL max_allowed_packet = 500 * 1024 * 1024. Then repeat step 2.
If value is shown as 500 M repeat your file upload.
If still problem persists, then it could be like mysql is looking at different variable.
I am currently working on a small addresstable with vaadin, just to get to know vaadin a little. I have run into a problem, where I want to sort the entries of my table manually. The problem is, that I get a NullPointerException when i try to do this:
item.getItemProperty(Columns.NAME).getValue()
I have tried a few things here. I checked item and item isn't null, neither is item.getItemProperty(Columns.NAME) null. So when I try to make an if I still get a NullPointerException
if(item.getItemProperty(Columns.NAME).getValue() == null){}
The value is null and I understand that, but I want to give this value to an other item and I have no idea how to.

IndexedContainer's Items are IndexedContainerItem.
When call it's getItemProperty the result is never null:
#Override
public Property getItemProperty(Object id) {
return new IndexedContainerProperty(itemId, id);
}
But when you call Property's getValue it may be null if there is no itemId or propertyId:
#Override
public T getValue() {
return (T) items.get(itemId).get(propertyId);
}
Probably it is a Vaadin bug: link
EDIT
If you want to check the container contains the item, you can do this:
public class MyIndexedContainer extends IndexedContainer {
#Override
public Item getUnfilteredItem(Object itemId) { // make it public
return super.getUnfilteredItem(itemId);
}
}
then
Table table = new Table();
MyIndexedContainer mic = new MyIndexedContainer();
table.setContainerDataSource(mic);
//...
// check that the container contains the item
if (mic.getUnfilteredItem(item) != null) {
//...
}
