I want to display values on textview through JSONParser using given url - java

I want to display about_builder of given JSON url, but I am not able to declare properly JSONObject and JSONArray on MainActivity, so please anyone help me to display the data on TextView.

You are using Network related code in main thread. Use AsyncTask.

You are calling network calls inside the main thread means foreground which is not supported in android.So use assynctask class which will handle network calls in background.
1)inside on create method call like:
new GetJson().execute();
2) declare the following outside oncreate
private class GetJson extends AsyncTask<String, Void, String> {
JSONObject c=null;
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
super.onPreExecute();
}
#Override
protected JSONObject doInBackground(String... params) {
JSONParser jParser = new JSONParser();
JSONObject json = jParser.getJSONFormUrl(url);
try {
builder = json.getJSONArray(TAG_Name);
c = builder.getJSONObject(0);
} catch (JSONException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
return c;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(final JSONObject result) {
for (int i = 0; i < result.length(); i++) {
String name = result.getString(TAG_Name);
final TextView nam = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtname);
nam.setText(name);
}
}

I modified your AsyncTask and tested below code and its working fine. Let me know if you found any issue.
Add below dependencies

You are using POST request where as your api is expecting GET request
Here is more details about GET and POST
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(HttpURL);
replace this with following
HttpGet request = new HttpGet(HttpURL);
To avoid crash replace your code with
textView.setText(jsonObject.getString("distance"));
this
textView.setText(jsonObject.isNull("distance") ? "null object" : jsonObject.getString("distance"));

How to use GetJsonFromUrlTask.java in a fragment

I found the code below from a website and it seems it might help me in my android application. But the problem is, the code below is for an activity only and I need to run the code in a fragment. BTW my application is about downloading the images from the online database and storing it to a listview.
What should I do?
This is the code I want to use:
public class GetJsonFromUrlTask extends AsyncTask<Void, Void, String> {
private Activity activity;
private String url;
private ProgressDialog dialog;
private final static String TAG = GetJsonFromUrlTask.class.getSimpleName();
public GetJsonFromUrlTask(Activity activity, String url) {
super();
this.activity = activity;
this.url = url;
}
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
super.onPreExecute();
// Create a progress dialog
dialog = new ProgressDialog(activity);
// Set progress dialog title
dialog.setTitle("Getting JSON DATA");
// Set progress dialog message
dialog.setMessage("Loading...");
dialog.setIndeterminate(false);
// Show progress dialog
dialog.show();
}
#Override
protected String doInBackground(Void... params) {
// call load JSON from url method
return loadJSON(this.url).toString();
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
((CategoryListViewActivity) activity).parseJsonResponse(result);
dialog.dismiss();
Log.i(TAG, result);
}
public JSONArray loadJSON(String url) {
// Creating JSON Parser instance
JSONGetter jParser = new JSONGetter();
// getting JSON string from URL
JSONArray json = jParser.getJSONFromUrl(url);
return json;
}
private class JSONGetter {
private InputStream is = null;
private JSONArray jObj = null;
private String json = "";
// constructor
public JSONGetter() {
}
public JSONArray getJSONFromUrl(String url) {
// Making HTTP request
try {
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
try {
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is, "iso-8859-1"),
8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
is.close();
json = sb.toString();
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.e("Buffer Error", "Error converting result " + e.toString());
}
// try parse the string to a JSON object
try {
jObj = new JSONArray(json);
} catch (JSONException e) {
Log.e("JSON Parser", "Error parsing data " + e.toString());
}
// return JSON String
return jObj;
}
}
}
There is easy step to use AsyncTask within fragment just as follow
place code on activityCreateview
new GetJsonFromUrlTask(getActivity(), mListView).execute("");
getActivity() is method to getting your activity context in to Fragment class
Note: As you found code from website this code is a AsyncTask class you can call this code in to Activity,Fragment, any other Class also
Change code
public class GetJsonFromUrlTask extends AsyncTask<Void, Void, String> {
private Context activity;
private String url;
private ProgressDialog dialog;
private final static String TAG = GetJsonFromUrlTask.class.getSimpleName();
public GetJsonFromUrlTask(Context activity, String url) {
super();
this.activity = activity;
this.url = url;
}
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
super.onPreExecute();
// Create a progress dialog
dialog = new ProgressDialog(activity);
// Set progress dialog title
dialog.setTitle("Getting JSON DATA");
// Set progress dialog message
dialog.setMessage("Loading...");
dialog.setIndeterminate(false);
// Show progress dialog
dialog.show();
}
#Override
protected String doInBackground(Void... params) {
// call load JSON from url method
return loadJSON(this.url).toString();
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String result) {
dialog.dismiss();
Log.i(TAG, result);
}
public JSONArray loadJSON(String url) {
// Creating JSON Parser instance
JSONGetter jParser = new JSONGetter();
// getting JSON string from URL
JSONArray json = jParser.getJSONFromUrl(url);
return json;
}
private class JSONGetter {
private InputStream is = null;
private JSONArray jObj = null;
private String json = "";
// constructor
public JSONGetter() {
}
public JSONArray getJSONFromUrl(String url) {
// Making HTTP request
try {
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
try {
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is, "iso-8859-1"),
8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
is.close();
json = sb.toString();
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.e("Buffer Error", "Error converting result " + e.toString());
}
// try parse the string to a JSON object
try {
jObj = new JSONArray(json);
} catch (JSONException e) {
Log.e("JSON Parser", "Error parsing data " + e.toString());

Also, I found this answer (Android strange error) but it didn't work
I would be thankful to consider this error and help me to solve that.
I know that maybe could be stupid but one error that was bother me was:
JSONObject.put(java.lang.String, java.lang.Object)' on a null object reference
This can happen even when you have not declared your json into your doInBackground.
So when you write your code don't forget to insert:
final JSONObject jsonresponse = new JSONObject();
Give your app permission to get connected to the internet in AndroidManifest.xml
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"></uses-permission>
The exception is thrown here:
try {
jObj = new JSONObject(json);
} catch (JSONException e) {
Log.e("JSON Parser", "Error parsing data " + e.toString());
}
json is null, and JSONObject can't be created. Please check why json is not assigned and remains null in this code:
String json = null;
// Making HTTP request
try {
// defaultHttpClient
DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost(url);
HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(httpPost);
HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity();
is = httpEntity.getContent();
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(
is, "iso-8859-1"), 8);
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
String line = null;
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line + "\n");
}
is.close();
json = sb.toString();
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}

Why im i getting this error? When using the right username and password in the url you would get: {"error":"","session":"RANDOM NUMBER"}
And as you can see i try to fetch this number. Any help is much appreciated!
You are getting this error because in line
JSONArray shows = object.getJSONArray("error");
you are trying to get value for key error and treat is as an array, whereas it's not - it's an empty string. Therefore you need to get it as a string:
String error = object.getString("error");
Similarly, if you need to get your "session", you can get it with
String session = object.getString("session");
P.S. Note that this is assuming that your JSONObject object actually contains the object represented by the string in your question.
