Android: Object.list is empty after passing it as parcelable - java

I'm fairly new to java/android. I am attempting to pass a custom object (Raffle), which is implementing Parcelable, to another activity.
In the receiving activity I am able to access string properties of this object, but lists appear to be emptied at some point. Toasting the the list.size() in the first activity gives 3, but the same toast in the receiving activity gives 0.
Relevant code is below. Please let me know if I have left out anything.
onCLickListener in Sending Activity (HomeActivity)
raffleListView.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> a, View v, int position, long id) {
Intent intent = new Intent(HomeActivity.this,RafflePurchaseActivity.class);
Raffle selectedRaffle = (Raffle) allRaffles.get(position);
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "1: " + selectedRaffle.Description + ": " + Integer.toString(selectedRaffle.getTicketTiers().size()), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
//Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "TEST: " + Integer.toString(selectedRaffle.ticketTiers.size()), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
intent.putExtra("raffle", selectedRaffle);
startActivity(intent);
}
});
Receiving Activity (RafflePurchaseActivity)
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_raffle_purchase);
Bundle bundle = this.getIntent().getExtras();
Raffle theRaffle = bundle.getParcelable("raffle");
List<RaffleTicketTier> xticketTiers = theRaffle.getTicketTiers();
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "2:" + theRaffle.Description + ": " + Integer.toString(xticketTiers.size()), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
the Raffle class
public class Raffle implements Parcelable {
public String Title;

public int numPrizes;
public String prize1;
public String prize2;

public String prize4;

You don't seem to be writing tickerTiers to the parcel. Something like this answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/10781119/156708 for parceling arrays of custom types.
Relevant code from other answer
public void writeToParcel(Parcel out, int arg1) {
out.writeInt(mObjList.length);
out.writeTypedArray(mObjList, arg1);
}
private void readFromParcel(Parcel in) {
int size = in.readInt();
mObjList = in.readTypedArray(new MyClass[size], MyClass.CREATOR);
}

Passing data in recycler view from API

I tried to make a covid-19 tracking app by watching Youtube tutorials.
My app shows the country list with flags and when you click on any country it opens an activity and shows the details of that country i.e total cases, deaths, recovered, etc. The video on Youtube uses ListView and I am using recyclerView
I fetched the country list successfully and set onClickListener on the view and it opens second activity which shows the case in detail. But I don't know how to show the data.
my adapter class:
class Countries_adapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<Countries_adapter.MyViewHolder> {
Context ct;
List<Countries_data> list;
public Countries_adapter(Context context,List<Countries_data> country)
{
ct=context;
list=country;
}
#Override
public MyViewHolder onCreateViewHolder( ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View v = LayoutInflater.from(ct).inflate(R.layout.countries_row,parent,false);
return new MyViewHolder(v);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(MyViewHolder holder, final int position) {
holder.tvCountryName.setText(list.get(position).getCountry());
holder.tvtotal.setText(list.get(position).getActive());
Glide.with(ct).load(list.get(position).getFlag()).into(holder.imageView);
holder.linearLayout.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {

How to set the data in tvcases?
How can I show the data? Do I have to create a separate recycler view and then fetch the data from the API or can I use my main activity to show the data?
I have some sad information for you: Google Play policy restricts such apps from being published in store... especially when you are showing deaths count. Been there, done that, my app was blocked...
besides above:
you are passing country name in intent:
i.putExtra("Country",list.get(position).getCountry());
but trying to read "position" in details Activity - it will be always 0 (default)
edit due to comments:
pass position of clicked View
holder.linearLayout.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent i = new Intent(ct,CountriesDetails.class);
i.putExtra("position", position);
ct.startActivity(i);
}
});
in CountriesDetailss onCreate method receive this position and restore proper Countries_data object from your static countryList array in AffectedCountries
int position = getIntent().getIntExtra("position", 0);
Countries_data country = AffectedCountries.countryList.get(position);
tvCountry.setText(country.getCountry());
that should work, but this isn't best way to store data, in fact its very weak... after downloading data (list of countries) you should store it somehow, e.g. SQLite/Room lib or at least SharedPreferences... then in details activity you should restore int position and using it take proper object from database or preferences, instead of stright from static array
it may be also useful to implement Parcelable inteface to your Countries_data - this will allow to put whole Countries_data object into Intents extras, not only primitive int with position in array. in this case details activity won't even need access to whole array or sql database/preferences, it will get whole object straight from Intents extras

Method getParcelableExtra() returns null when creating an intent

I have a problem regarding the creation of an intent and the handover of an object with the getParcelableExtra() method to it.
The aim of the project is the creation of a recycler view. If an item from the recycler is selected a new intent gets started and should display more detailed data.
Because the data is fetched from an external MySQL DB I'm using Volley for most of the networking stuff.
The recycler is implemented inside the Volley onResponse() method which is first called at app start (onCreate). Until this point everything works fine and the recycler is loaded and displayed correctly.
public class UserAreaActivity extends AppCompatActivity{
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_user_area);
initializeRecycler();
}
public void initializeRecycler() {
operations.getFoodFromDB(getFoodID(), new IDatabaseOperations() {
#Override
public void onSuccess(final ArrayList<Food> food_list) {
mRecyclerView = (RecyclerView) findViewById(R.id.recyclerView);
mLayoutmanager = new LinearLayoutManager(UserAreaActivity.this);
mAdapter = new FoodAdapter(food_list);
mRecyclerView.setLayoutManager(mLayoutmanager);
mRecyclerView.setAdapter(mAdapter);
mAdapter.setOnItemClickListener(new FoodAdapter.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void OnItemClick(int position) {
Intent intent = new Intent(UserAreaActivity.this, FoodProfile.class);
GETS CORRECT OBJECT----->intent.putExtra("food", food_list.get(position));
startActivity(intent);
}
});
}
});
}
}
As you see I created an interface for the Volley onResponse method called onSuccess. Inside this method I am creating an onItemClickListener and this is where it gets ugly.
The onItemClickListener opens up the more detailed view of the item, but the method getParcelableExtra() returns NULL. Whatever I do it never returns an object of the class Food.
public class FoodProfile extends AppCompatActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(activity_food_profile);
Food food = getIntent().getParcelableExtra("food");<----RETURNS NULL
String price = food.getPrice();
String name = food.getName();
String rating = ((Float)food.getRating()).toString();
String imageRes = food.getmimgId();
TextView mPrice = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.Price);
mPrice.setText(price);
TextView mName = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.Name);
mName.setText(name);
TextView mRating = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.Rating);
mRating.setText(rating);
}
}
So the putExtra() works as intended and gets the correct object of the food class. But getParcelableExtra() returns NULL everytime. So no value is displayed in the started intent.
Food class:
public class Food implements Parcelable {
public int id;
public String name;
public String category;
public String date;
public int vegan;
public int vegetarian;
public String price;
public String uuid;
public float rating;
public String mimgId;
public Food(int id, String name, String category, int vegan, int vegetarian, String price, String uuid, float rating, String mimgId){
this.id = id;
this.name = name;
this.category = category;
this.date = date;
this.vegan = vegan;
this.vegetarian = vegetarian;
this.price = price;
this.uuid = uuid;
this.rating = rating;
this.mimgId = mimgId;
}
protected Food(Parcel in) {
id = in.readInt();
name = in.readString();
category = in.readString();
date = in.readString();
vegan = in.readInt();
vegetarian = in.readInt();
price = in.readString();
uuid = in.readString();
rating = in.readFloat();
mimgId = in.readString();
}
public static final Creator<Food> CREATOR = new Creator<Food>() {
#Override
public Food createFromParcel(Parcel in) {
return new Food(in);
}
#Override
public Food[] newArray(int size) {
return new Food[size];
}
};
public int getId() {
return id;
}
public String getName() {
if(name != null) {
name = name.replaceAll(System.getProperty("line.separator"), (""));
}
return name;
}
public String getDate() {
return date;
}
public int isVegan() {
return vegan;
}
public int isVegetarian() {
return vegetarian;
}
public String getPrice() {
return price;
}
public String getUuid() {
return uuid;
}
public float getRating(){return rating;}
public String getmimgId() {
return mimgId;
}
#Override
public int describeContents() {
return 0;
}
#Override
public void writeToParcel(Parcel dest, int flags) {
dest.writeString(price);
dest.writeString(name);
dest.writeString(((Float)rating).toString());
dest.writeString(mimgId);
}
}
Has anyone an idea whats causing the getParcelableExtra() to return null?
Thanks for your help in advance!
As I commented above, the writeToParcel() is problematic. The parcel should be written and read in the same order.

Problems with parcelable custom object - Android

I am trying to pass a custom object from one activity to another one.
I found that we can use a bundle to pass data into the intent and that we need a parcelable interface implemented in our class.
In the following code I removed the useless stuff.
public class TravelCard implements Parcelable {
public static final Creator<TravelCard> CREATOR = new Creator<TravelCard>() {
#Override
public TravelCard createFromParcel(Parcel in) {
return new TravelCard(in);
}
#Override
public TravelCard[] newArray(int size) {
return new TravelCard[size];
}
};
private String travelTitle, travelCountry, dateRange, numOfPerson;
private List<TravelDay> days;
protected TravelCard(Parcel in) {
travelTitle = in.readString();
travelCountry = in.readString();
dateRange = in.readString();
numOfPerson = in.readString();
in.readTypedList(days, TravelDay.CREATOR);
}
#Override
public int describeContents() {
return 0;
}
#Override
public void writeToParcel(Parcel dest, int flags) {
dest.writeString(this.travelTitle);
dest.writeString(this.travelCountry);
dest.writeString(this.dateRange);
dest.writeString(this.numOfPerson);
dest.writeTypedList(this.days);
}
In this class I have a List of another custom object:
public class TravelDay implements Parcelable {
public static final Creator<TravelDay> CREATOR = new Creator<TravelDay>() {
#Override
public TravelDay createFromParcel(Parcel in) {
return new TravelDay(in);
}
#Override
public TravelDay[] newArray(int size) {
return new TravelDay[size];
}
};
public int current_day;
private String title, note, dateOfToday;
protected TravelDay(Parcel in) {
title = in.readString();
note = in.readString();
dateOfToday = in.readString();
current_day = in.readInt();
}
#Override
public int describeContents() {
return 0;
}
#Override
public void writeToParcel(Parcel dest, int flags) {
dest.writeString(title);
dest.writeString(note);
dest.writeString(dateOfToday);
dest.writeInt(current_day);
}
I think until here everything should be fine.
In my activity :
Intent intent = new Intent(MainActivity.this, TravelDayActivity.class);
Bundle data = new Bundle();
data.putParcelable(DataKey.TRAVEL_CARD_BUNDLE,item);
intent.putExtras(data);
startActivity(intent);
And then in the TravelDayActivity :
Intent intent = getIntent();
Bundle data = intent.getExtras();
TravelCard travelCard = data.getParcelable(DataKey.TRAVEL_CARD_BUNDLE);
Every time I tried to access the TravelDayActivity the app stop running.
I used the debug mode to search something wrong but I did not find anything.
Thank you in advance
EDIT :
In the MainActivity that's how I get the item variable:
mAdapter = new TravelCardAdapter(travelCards, new TravelCardAdapter.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(TravelCard item) {
Intent intent = new Intent(MainActivity.this,TravelDayActivity.class);
Bundle data = new Bundle();
data.putParcelable(DataKey.TRAVEL_CARD_BUNDLE,item);
intent.putExtras(data);
startActivity(intent);
}
});
Whenever I click on one of the recycler view item this code above is executed.
After the suggestion of #BVantur, I solved my problem using the parceler library :
parceler library
It has been very helpful, easy to use and a good documentation! I highly recommend it.

P.S. I would share github link but I should give you my personal API key. :(
You need to start the AsyncTask in onCreate() (like you did before) and in finished() you take the results and add them to the Adapter's data list.
Finally, don't forget to call notifyDatasetChanged().
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_movie_details);
// skipping some lines of code here...
mReviewRecycle.setAdapter(mReviewAdapter);
ReviewAsyncTask reviewAsyncTask = new ReviewAsyncTask(this);
reviewAsyncTask.execute();
}
#Override
public void finished(ArrayList<ReviewData> output) {
mReviewList.addAll(output);
mReviewAdapter.notifyDatasetChanged();
}
(Please note that I skipped null checks and error handling for brevity's sake)
In MovieDetails onCreate retrieve current movie ID like you do in displayMovieDetail.
Send that ID to ReviewAsyncTask (you'll need to modify constructor of ReviewAsyncTask)
Retrieve id in ReviewAsyncTask, save it as member variable, and then in doInBackground method send that id to buildReviewUrl as an argument.

How can I pass object from ArrayList to new Activity and then receive that? [duplicate]

How to pass ArrayList<CustomeObject> from one activity to another? [duplicate]

I try pass an object to new activity but I have a problem. My ArrayList use another class in this way:
ArrayList<ListData> myList = new ArrayList<>();
All is great, I'm adding to mList a few objects and my listview work fine.
I try pass an object after click in this way:
listview.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> adapterView, View view, int position, long l) {
ListData listdata = myList.get(position);
ListData dataToSend = new ListData();
dataToSend.setStrefa(listdata.getStrefa());
dataToSend.setDzielnica(listdata.getDzielnica());
dataToSend.setAdres(listdata.getAdres());
dataToSend.setKryteria(listdata.getKryteria());
dataToSend.setTelefon(listdata.getTelefon());
dataToSend.setData(listdata.getData());
Intent intent = new Intent(Zlecenia.this, Zlecenie.class);
intent.putExtra("myData", dataToSend);
startActivity(intent);
overridePendingTransition(R.anim.fade_in, R.anim.no_animation);
}
});
Here is a problem because "bundle.putParcelableArrayList("listdata", listdata);" is marked on red. This forces on me using extends Parcelable in ListData Class but when I added this extends then my ArrayList is empty. What schould I do?
My ListData:
public class ListData implements Parcelable{
String Strefa;
String Adres;
String Kryteria;
String Telefon;
String Data;
String Dzielnica;
String Ilosc;
/* Zlecenia */
public String getStrefa() {
return Strefa;
}
public void setStrefa(String strefa) {
this.Strefa = strefa;
}
public String getAdres() {
return Adres;
}
public void setAdres(String adres) {
this.Adres = adres;
}
public String getKryteria() {
return Kryteria;
}
public void setKryteria(String kryteria) {
this.Kryteria = kryteria;
}
public String getTelefon() {
return Telefon;
}
public void setTelefon(String telefon) {
this.Telefon = telefon;
}
public String getData() {
return Data;
}
public void setData(String data) {
this.Data = data;
}
/* Statystyki */
public String getDzielnica() {
return Dzielnica;
}
public void setDzielnica(String dzielnica) {
this.Dzielnica = dzielnica;
}
public String getIlosc() {
return Ilosc;
}
public void setIlosc(String ilosc) {
this.Ilosc = ilosc;
}
public ListData() {
}
#Override
public int describeContents() {
return 0;
}
#Override
public void writeToParcel(Parcel dest, int flags) {
dest.writeString(Strefa);
dest.writeString(Dzielnica);
dest.writeString(Adres);
dest.writeString(Kryteria);
dest.writeString(Telefon);
dest.writeString(Data);
}
private ListData(Parcel in) {
Strefa = in.readString();
Dzielnica = in.readString();
Adres = in.readString();
Kryteria = in.readString();
Telefon = in.readString();
Data = in.readString();
}
public static final Parcelable.Creator<ListData> CREATOR
= new Parcelable.Creator<ListData>() {
#Override
public ListData createFromParcel(Parcel in) {
return new ListData(in);
}
#Override
public ListData[] newArray(int size) {
return new ListData[size];
}
};
}
Try this in your class
public class ListData implements Serializable
