JavaFX small collapsible pane? - java

I want a panel around two text fields that can be collapsed, similar to a TitledPane with no text. However the TitledPane uses too much vertical space so that it saves almost no space, as it reserves the space normally used for the title. Does JavaFX offer a really space-saving panel, lets say a rectangle with a triangle for collapsing?

There is no such ui control in JavaFx apparently. You must implement your own "collapsible pane" . It is possible to use TreeView but I think it can only hold text values as child elements.

Wrapping Text in Java Swing

Okay, I am kind of desperate right now. I hope you guys can help.
I need to layout content panels with Java Swing. The Problem is, that every content is different. So I need a panel that resize itself for every content. Basically what LayoutManagers are invented for.
I need a left panel and a right panel. The widths of the panels should be fixed. The heights should adjust to the given content

Easy going I thought, but it just wont work. I tried different layout managers. Some of them keep the 30% rule, but doesn't wrap the content and just display them in one single line (BorderLayout).
If a LayoutManager does support line-break (even if its just for HTML text but that is fine for me) it wont support the fixed width. A combination of both didn't worked for me either.
Note that I need to stick to Swing and can not use another more advanced library because the system I am developing for is stuck to Java 1.5. Furthermore, I know the total screenwidth so I could calculate the width of the panels to work with fixed widths, but I need to be flexible with the height.
You can achieve this by using nested BorderLayouts. Start by setting your Panel's layout as BorderLayout.
After that, for each left and right panels, set layouts as BorderLayout again. At this level, you will set %30 and %70 ratio.
Within this layouts, add your contents to NORTH layouts. This will enable your panels' height to match given content.

Java button within graphics panel

I'm relatively new to developing GUI's within java so this may well be a stupid question or quite simply not possible to achieve but here we go.
I've created 1 single JPanel with no border layout set up or anything like that and I intended to paint a GUI on top of it using the graphics class. The JPanel is just plain black and then I've drawn a huge box over it leaving the black just as a border, and painted the whole GUI within this white box.
I want to add buttons within that white box GUI as well but I've no idea how. In fact they don't even have to be traditional buttons JButtons, if I could just draw a shape and have that act as a button then add an event handler to just that shape that would work also but I don't know how I'd do that either.
I have so much code for my whole program (it's a school coursework project) that I'm not sure which parts would even be worth sharing to assist with this question since there's so many GUI aspects I've already drawn so I've tried to just explain my issue in words.
Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing so any help would be appreciated.

As with any suitably complex UI, you need to start by breaking it down into manageable chunks, focusing on areas of mutual interaction and functionality.
For example...
Says to me that you have two primary UI elements, the left and the right.
This could easily be established with a GridLayout, but, if the two sides are not equal in width, a GridBagLayout might be more appropriate
The right side to me says simply, JTable. You could place this within a container using a BorderLayout, allowing the table to occupy the CENTER position.
The key information would then a component laid out with either a GridLayout (top and bottom) or a GridBagLayout if the requirements are more complex. This component would then be added to the SOUTH position of the BorderLayout.
Again, this is pretty simple. The primary layout would probably be a BoderLayout, with the title in the NORTH position, the graph in the CENTER and the buttons wrapped in a component in the SOUTH.
You could use either a FlowLayout or GridBagLayout to layout the buttons depending on your how you want them to appear

How to hide other panels or panes during coding

Using Eclipse Juno for Java & WindowBuilder
I have three panels of the same size that lay on top of each other - they have different widgets. During coding, they all display and clutter up what I'm doing.
I can show and hide them in runtime as needed but, I want to display only the one I'm working on while doing drag and drop of widgets. I've tried using different panels and pane types (tabbed, layered...) and selecting opaque but, nothing hides them.
How do I hide the other (panes, panels...etc) during coding?
I have the same issue. Among other reasons, my solution was to create separate classes per view. So my frame would be its own class, it would maybe have a TabbedPanel (or whatever it's called), and then I would have a new class for each tab on that tabbed panel. Each class would extend JPanel so I could plop it right in there. That way not only is your gui design not cluttered up, but your code logic is separated into separate files, where it might belong anyway.
[SOLVED] Answering my own question.
It may not be perfect or the best/correct way, but it works!
WindowBuilder wants to Surround other panels/widgets that are within it's bounds so, you have to trick it by using opaque, Order>forward/backward then setting the desired bounds (all panel sizes and bounds can be equal and will overlay nicely both during widget drag&drop and runtime).
Here's how to do it with a 3-Panel example (NOTE: WindowBuilder is buggy/in-consistent and often I needed to select the items from the gui, not in the Components tree).
Create your first panel. Add your widgets and border to it.
Create your second panel (the one you want to overlay on top of the first one). This second panel MUST not be completely inside the first panel - it MUST extend beyond the edges of the first panel (parts of it can be inside the first panel). This takes a bit of trial because of the 'surround', mentioned above. Use the shift-key to stop the snapping.
Select the top panel in the gui, NOT from the Components tree, and toggle the Opaque property. The top panel (first or second) in the tree is the one you set to opaque and work on.
Add another panel and repeat the process.
Once you get your widgets/etc as you want them, use the property Bounds to set them all the same or as desired. After that, as long as you don't move a panel by dragging it, it will remain un-surrounded by the other panels. If you move by dragging, it may get set to surround...
I've done this a dozen times now and it works consistently.

List of contacts swing

I need to implement ui for list of contacts like in skype. An contact represented by custom class(JContact) which derived from JPanel. I tried to use different layouts but not received expected result. Main frame has next structure.
JFrame -> JPanel(contactsPanel)-> JScrollPane(scrollContacts)->JPanel(contactPanel)

Strange behavior i think, because expected what each contacts will one under one because indicate HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_NEVER for scrollContacts.
If use Grid or Box layout. Layout automatically re-size my panels, it's look very ugly. see Grid&Box layouts image.

Quoting the Swing tutorial:
The FlowLayout class puts components in a row, sized at their preferred size. If the horizontal space in the container is too small to put all the components in one row, the FlowLayout class uses multiple rows
So the result you get is expected.
A GridLayout object places components in a grid of cells. Each component takes all the available space within its cell, and each cell is exactly the same size. If the GridLayoutDemo window is resized, the GridLayout object changes the cell size so that the cells are as large as possible, given the space available to the container.
So the result you get is also expected.
When a BoxLayout lays out components from top to bottom, it tries to size each component at the component's preferred height. If the vertical space of the layout does not match the sum of the preferred heights, then BoxLayout tries to resize the components to fill the space.
So the result you get is also expected.
But, a box layout can contain glue components to avoid that.
I would thus use a vertical box layout, and add a vertical glue as the last component. Read the tutorial.

JXMultiSplitPane going bonkers when I switch tabs

I'm using JXMultiSplitPane (from SwingX 1.6.2) to implement a three-pane horizontal interface. In the center pane is a JTabbedPane with two tabs: one with a JTextArea (in a JScrollPane, of course) used for entering Markdown code and the other a JEditorPane (again, in a scroll pane) for displaying a rendered HTML preview. When the user switches to the preview pane, the text in the editor is processed and displayed in the preview pane.
My problem is that if I enter text in the editor with long lines, and then switch to the preview, the center pane will expand. Sometimes it's just by a little bit, other times it'll take up more room than is actually on the screen. But if I move one of the resize handles manually, everything will snap back in place.
I've found only two ways to deal with this before it happens:
Manually resize one of the panes before entering any text.
Give the center pane a weight of 1 in the MultiSplitLayout model.
I can't use the second one since it will expand the center pane to take up almost the whole window by default.
Is there a way to fix this?

After a little more testing, even technique (2) doesn't keep the size constant; switching between the two tabs changes the size of the center pane slightly.
I now believe that the problem is partly with the tabbed pane. The JTextArea and the JEditorPane do not have the same size and that JTabbedPane is resizing when I switch between them (since I'm resetting the JEditorPane text every time. This wouldn't be a problem except that JXMultiSplitPane will keep automatically resizing the center pane until the user forces a specific size by resizing manually.
So I should be able to fix the issue by making the size of the JTabbedPane fixed, but still able to be resized by the handle bars. Any tips on doing that?
The MultiSplitLayout is .. a LayoutManager, so you have to understand how it works (me too, not overly familiar with it myself :-)
The basic layout happens according to the component's prefSize, the weights are for distributing excess/missing space relative to the pref. By default, the dividers are "floating", that is they are positioned between the components as layouted by the basic mechanism. The moment a user touches a divider, dividers are "not-floating", comp sized to fit in-between the dividers. That's the reason for you not seeing the size-greed after moving the divider once. So one ways out is to
setup the JXMultiSplitPane as usual, add the components and realize the frame
fix the dividers after the manager has done its initial layout

Alternatively, give more weight to the weights - force the layoutManager to use them for the layout itself (instead of only for the distribution of excess/missing space). A side-effect is that the prefSize of the comps might be set (by the layout, which is a no-no-never, but who's perfect ;-)

Not sure which way I would prefer or if/how that could be made easier in the multisplit ..
