I'm working in an application that needs to do a background job every 5 seconds to retrieve an image from a server, when the job is done, the ImageView in my UI needs to be updated if there is something in return.
I'm using AlarmManager to do the job but don't know how to update the UI when the job is done.
Also I want to know if this is the best way to do it, or if I have to implement some kind of service.
This is my onCreate method, where I initialize my UI components and the AlarmManager with the PendingIntent:
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
swtSIGNAL = (Switch) findViewById(R.id.swtSIGNAL);
snackView = swtSIGNAL;
swtSIGNAL.setOnCheckedChangeListener(new CompoundButton.OnCheckedChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onCheckedChanged(CompoundButton buttonView, boolean isChecked) {
if (!isChecked) {
mSetSignalTask = new SetSignalAsync(progressDialog, snackView, true);
mSetSignalTask.execute();
} else {
mSetSignalTask = new SetSignalAsync(progressDialog, snackView, false);
mSetSignalTask.execute();
}
}
});
swtALARM=(Switch)findViewById(R.id.swtALARM);
snackView=swtALARM;
swtALARM.setOnCheckedChangeListener(new CompoundButton.OnCheckedChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onCheckedChanged(CompoundButton buttonView, boolean isChecked) {
if (!isChecked) {
mSetAlarmTask = new SetAlarmAsync(progressDialog, snackView,true);
mSetAlarmTask.execute();
} else {
mSetAlarmTask = new SetAlarmAsync(progressDialog,snackView,false);
mSetAlarmTask.execute();
}
}
});
imgFOTO=(ImageView) findViewById(R.id.imgFOTO);
progressDialog = new ProgressDialog(this);
progressDialog.setCancelable(false);
progressDialog.isIndeterminate();
callListener = new EndCallListener();
telephonyManager = (TelephonyManager) getSystemService(TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
telephonyManager.listen(callListener, PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE);
Intent alarmIntent = new Intent(this, AlarmReceiver.class);
pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(this, 0, alarmIntent, 0);
}
This is my setAlarm method which activates the AlarmManager:
public void setAlarm(){
manager=(AlarmManager)getSystemService(ALARM_SERVICE);
int interval=5000;
manager.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP,System.currentTimeMillis(),interval,pendingIntent);
Toast.makeText(this, "Alarm Set", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
This is the AlarmReceiver class which extends from a BroadcastReceiver:
public class AlarmReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver{
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
Toast.makeText(context, "Working", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
Finally this is the method that fetches the image from the server; I'm using AsyncTask to not freeze the app.
public class GetImageAsync extends AsyncTask<Void,Void,Bitmap>{
#Override
protected Bitmap doInBackground(Void... params) {
try{
URL url=new URL("http://192.168.0.16/HouseSecure/SECImages/example.jpg");
HttpURLConnection connection=(HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();
connection.setDoInput(true);
connection.connect();
InputStream inputStream=connection.getInputStream();
Bitmap image= BitmapFactory.decodeStream(inputStream);
connection.disconnect();
return image;
}catch (MalformedURLException e){
Log.e(LOG_TAG, e.getMessage());
return null;
}catch(IOException ex){
Log.e(LOG_TAG,ex.getMessage());
return null;
}
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(Bitmap image) {
imgFOTO.setImageBitmap(image);
}
}
Use AlarmClock API Provided by Studio instead of AlarmManager if you are going to set an Alarm

I am trying to show a countdown in a textview from a loop inside an Intent Service. I am using the result receiver class for the communication between Intent Service and Activity. It works fine when I start the service for the first time. The textview shows the countdown for each time the loop runs in the service.
But when I close and launch the app again the textview doesn't show the countdown and only shows the hard coded text, while on the other hand the service stills runs in the background.
Here is my code snippet for the MainActivity
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity implements View.OnClickListener {
public static final String RECEIVER_INTENT_EXTRA_NAME = "message_receiver_intent_extra";
private static final String TAG = "MainActivity";
private Intent intent;
MyIntentService myIntentService;
public TextView serviceCountdown;
private Button startButton, stopButton;
private Handler handler;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
getSupportActionBar().hide();
myIntentService = new MyIntentService();
startButton = findViewById(R.id.startServiceButton);
stopButton = findViewById(R.id.stopServiceButton);
startButton.setOnClickListener(this);
stopButton.setOnClickListener(this);
handler = new Handler();
serviceCountdown = findViewById(R.id.serviceCountdown);
MessageReceiver messageReceiver = new MessageReceiver(handler);
// send intent service
intent = new Intent(this, MyIntentService.class);
intent.putExtra(RECEIVER_INTENT_EXTRA_NAME, messageReceiver);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (startButton.equals(v)) {
ContextCompat.startForegroundService(getApplicationContext(), intent);
}
if (stopButton.equals(v)){
stopService(intent);
}
}
public class MessageReceiver extends ResultReceiver {
public MessageReceiver(Handler handler) {
super(handler);
}
#Override
protected void onReceiveResult(int resultCode, Bundle resultData) {
super.onReceiveResult(resultCode, resultData);
if (resultCode == 1 && resultData != null){
final String countdown = resultData.getString("countdown");
handler.post(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
serviceCountdown.setText(countdown);
}
});
}
}
}
}
And here is my code for the Intent Service Class
public class MyIntentService extends IntentService {
private static final String CHANNEL_ID = "my_channel_id";
private static final String TAG = "MyIntentService";
public MyIntentService() {
super("MyIntentService");
setIntentRedelivery(true);
}
#Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
Intent notificationIntent = new Intent(this, MainActivity.class);
PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, notificationIntent,0);
Notification notification = new NotificationCompat.Builder(this, CHANNEL_ID)
.setContentTitle("My Service Title")
.setContentText("This is sample notification text")
.setSmallIcon(R.drawable.ic_battery)
.setContentIntent(pendingIntent)
.build();
startForeground(1, notification);
}
#Override
protected void onHandleIntent(#Nullable Intent intent) {
ResultReceiver resultReceiver = intent.getParcelableExtra(MainActivity.RECEIVER_INTENT_EXTRA_NAME);
Log.d(TAG, "onHandleIntent: called");
synchronized (this) {
for (int i = 10; i >= 0; i--) {
try {
Thread.sleep(1000);
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
Log.d(TAG, "Service is looping : " + i);
Bundle bundle = new Bundle();
bundle.putString("countdown", String.valueOf(i));
resultReceiver.send(1, bundle);
}
}
}
#Override
public void onDestroy() {
Log.d(TAG, "onDestroy: called");
super.onDestroy();
}
}
In the real project, my intention is not to using the loop to show a countdown. It is just for testing and debugging purpose.
Use Local Broadcast Receiver from your service to activity. Now you getting the ResultReceiver from the MainActivity Intent. When the activity destroyed intents are also destroyed.
Use this Broadcast Receiver code in your service class.
LocalBroadcastManager localBroadcastManager =
LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this);
Intent sendIntent = new Intent(INTENT_ACTION_KEY);
sendIntent.putExtra(DATA_KEY, data);
localBroadcastManager.sendBroadcast(sendIntent);
Get this local broadcast receiver in your activity.
BroadcastReceiver broadcastReceiver = new BroadcastReceiver() {
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
if (intent != null) {
//Perform your logic.
}
}
};
Make sure you register this broadcast when activity starts and unregister it when stop.
#Override
public void onStart() {
super.onStart();
LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this).registerReceiver((broadcastReceiver),
new IntentFilter(INTENT_ACTION_KEY));
}
#Override
public void onStop() {
LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this).unregisterReceiver(broadcastReceiver);
super.onStop();
}
I have already been fetched data from instagram api. But i cannot reach that data to use it on my service. I have tried all methods that i know.
**Here is my main object: ** If my followers count is increases or decreases, notify, And check that for every 5 min.(I am still working on it. There are lots of misses yet.)
**Here is my main question: ** Do i really have to create a new parser to fetch data that i already have or what should i build?
If you have any sample or Articles for this case, that would be useful.
I heard about Csv file. Is that can be useful to import ?
PS: I learned java and android studio yet. I am pretty newbie.

The only solution that i found is the adding parser to your service to reach data from api. None of the the method can access to reach data from service to activity.
I added this class to reach api data on service.
public void lilParser() throws IOException, JSONException{
URL url = new URL(API_URL + "/users/" + mSession.getId()
+ "/?access_token=" + mAccessToken);
HttpURLConnection urlConnection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();
urlConnection.setRequestMethod("GET");
urlConnection.setDoInput(true);
urlConnection.connect();
String response = Utils.streamToString(urlConnection
.getInputStream());
System.out.println(response);
JSONObject jsonObj = (JSONObject) new JSONTokener(response).nextValue();
JSONObject data_obj = jsonObj.getJSONObject("data");
JSONObject counts_obj = data_obj.getJSONObject("counts");
String name = jsonObj.getJSONObject("data").getString("full_name");
String bio =jsonObj.getJSONObject("data").getString("bio");
String counts=jsonObj.getJSONObject("data").getString("counts");
userInfoHashmap.put(TAG_FOLLOWED_BY,counts_obj.getString(TAG_FOLLOWED_BY));
Log.i(TAG,"followedby=>[" + counts + "]");
}
And, Here is my onCreate. You can check The data if it is changed or not.
#Override
public void onCreate() {
Toast.makeText(this,"Service Started", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
myTimer = new Timer();
myTimer.schedule(new TimerTask() {
#Override
public void run() {
String fo = userInfoHashmap.get(TAG_FOLLOWED_BY);
try {
lilParser();
}
catch (IOException e) {e.printStackTrace();}
catch (JSONException e) {e.printStackTrace();}
if(new String(userInfoHashmap.get(TAG_FOLLOWED_BY)).equals(fo)==true){}
else {
getnotification();
}
}
}, 0, 30000);
}

You should have to work with registerReceiver,unregisterReceiver.
May this helps you.

put this two lines in manifest.
<service android:name=".ServiceDemo"
android:enabled="true"/>
You need to stop the player in onPause(). Following code can be used:
#Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
if (this.isFinishing()){
player.stop();
}
}
Check Android Stop Background Music for more details
for that you should stop the service in the onCreate method of the Activity. Below is the code for it :
stopService(new Intent(MyService.MY_SERVICE));
Best of Luck!
In Your MainActivity , You Should Call stopService() Inside MainActivity
#Override
public void OnPause() {
stopService(svc);
}
I am running into an issue with the implementation of the Dale Lane MQTT solution.
I cannot seem to figure out how to retrieve the published message from the MQTT Client I am using.
I am not sure if I am utilizing the the onReceive() method incorrectly, but for now all I would like to do is log the broadcasted messages.

The service I have implemented is exactly as listed here, I have no errors.

It turns out that the issue was in regards to a simple mistake that was in regards to this line.
preferenceBrokerTopic = etBroker.getText().toString().trim();
I corrected the issue and now it corrects properly because it was not subscribing to the correct topic.
preferenceBrokerTopic = etTopic.getText().toString().trim();
I'm working on a group project for a class I'm taking and we cannot seem to figure out why our Alarm Manager does not fire intents repeatedly. We've picked through the source code from top to bottom and cannot seem to isolate the source of this issue.
Can anyone recommend a fix? (or perhaps a starting point?)
// Start service using AlarmManager
Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance();
cal.add(Calendar.SECOND, 10);
Intent intent = new Intent(Rules.this, LMW.class);
PendingIntent pintent = PendingIntent.getService(Rules.this, 0, intent,
0);
AlarmManager alarm = (AlarmManager) getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
alarm.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, cal.getTimeInMillis(),
7 * 1000, pintent);
// Start 2nd service using AlarmManager
Intent intent2 = new Intent(Rules.this, KillTimer.class);
PendingIntent pintent2 = PendingIntent.getActivity(Rules.this, 0, intent2,
0);
AlarmManager alarm2 = (AlarmManager) getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
alarm.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, cal.getTimeInMillis(),
120 * 1000, pintent2); // here

http://android-er.blogspot.in/2010/10/schedule-repeating-alarm.html
I have had a similar problem and perhaps it applies to you (hard to tell since the code you supplied is pretty hard to navigate).
My issue was that applying multiple intents to the manager that evaluated as equal overrode the previous applications of that intent. See http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Intent.html#filterEquals(android.content.Intent) for what I mean by equivalence.
As an example, I had a schedule that used the URI domy://thing, with extras that varied over each intent (I need to fire the same action with different arguments each time). Extras don't count in equivalence, so my alarms were getting overwritten by each other.
To get around this, I stored a queue of my alarms in a separate file and when one fired, popped the next off the top and put that in the manager. Maybe that'll help you.
UPDATE:
No examples publicly visible, but try this (Trigger is a simple object containing a URI and a time it needs to be fired, scheduleDb is a class that extends SQLiteOpenHelper):
/**
* Pops the next trigger off the queue, adds it to the alarm manager, and
* stores it in the DB in case we need to cancel it later.
*/
private void scheduleNextTrigger() {
Log.d(TAG, "Popping next trigger off queue");
Optional<Trigger> nextTrigger = scheduleDb.getNextTrigger();
if (!nextTrigger.isPresent()) {
Log.d(TAG, "Trigger queue is empty");
return;
}
Trigger trigger = nextTrigger.get();
Log.d(TAG, "Scheduling new trigger " + trigger);
PendingIntent operation = createPendingIntent(trigger);
long timestamp = trigger.getTimestamp();
// Ensure the next item is in the future
if (timestamp > clock.currentTimeMillis()) {
Log.v(TAG, "Found valid trigger: " + trigger);
alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, timestamp, operation);
}
scheduleDb.setScheduledTrigger(trigger);
}
private PendingIntent createPendingIntent(Trigger trigger) {
// AlarmManager allows only one instance of each URI, and seems to randomly
// delete bundled URI extras, so we'll encode the triggered URI and place it
// on a constant stem
Uri triggerUri = Uri.parse(TRIGGER_URI + "?" + Uri.encode(trigger.getUri()));
Intent triggerIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, triggerUri);
triggerIntent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NO_HISTORY);
Log.d(TAG, "Created trigger intent " + triggerIntent);
PendingIntent operation = PendingIntent.getService(this, 0, triggerIntent, 0);
return operation;
}
Hope that helps
