thread pool server shut down gracefully - java

I have a simple http server implemented with thread pool. I want to shut down the server gracefully. I referred the post Best Way to Gracefully Shutdown a Java Command Line Program
Here is the basic code:

But it seems it does not stop the right way, any ideas? Thx.

This is too small piece of code.
But at the first sight I don't see any check for shutdown value in the main while loop. Secondly the variable should be set after and probably join on the listening thread would be worthy. In the run method I assume you properly handle the exception raised by asynchronous close.

Can't stop thread in Java

I'm trying to create a thread and then interrupt it. But it doesn't stop and cause exception. Can anybody explain what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

According to javadocs:
A thread interruption ignored because a thread was not alive at the
time of the interrupt will be reflected by this method returning
false.
Since you sleep the thread for 1000ms, when you call test.interrupt(), thread is asleep, almost all the times. So InterruptedException will be thrown. Therefore you should exit the loop at the catch clause.
Include a break when you catch InterruptedException to exit while loop.

The internal flag gets resetted after calling interrupt.
You have to call it again in your catch of the thread.

In my example, after I caught the InterruptedException, I used
Thread.currentThread().interrupt() to immediately interrupted the
thread again. Why is this necessary? When the exception is thrown, the
interrupted flag is cleared, so if you have nested loops, you will
cause trouble in the outer loops
Something like this should work:

In the above code I keep getting a thread Illegal Access Exception so why do i keep getting this exception
I want to open Multiple tabs in browser and open localhost:3000 then the Server Must print the http request and port number but this happens only for first Client and not the others it shows illegalThreadAccess Exception and the Program terminates

As you can read in the documentation of the Thread class method start() throws
IllegalThreadStateException if the thread was already started.
In your code, you create thread only once, and you try to run it multiple times.
How to fix? Before line:
t.start();
you should create new thread

Edit: About questions in comments. When you start thread, it starts to live its own live. You can eg. wait for terminating by invoking join() method on the thread object. The specification of the Thread class says how it's working and it says that you cannot rerun it.

Handle incoming sockets in another thread

I'm trying to do something potentially stupid, but I reckon it's a good idea, so bear with me. I tried to implement it, but I hit an awkward issue with sockets closing between threads - so I want some fresh eyes on the case.
Scenario
I want to write an object from a Client to a Server via sockets. There may be more than one Client communicating with the Server concurrently.
The object, a Message, is handled by the Server through its handling mechanisms. It is proposed that instead of the Server's main thread looking out for new incoming connections, a Listener thread is set up. Once it spots an incoming connection, it alerts the Server, storing the socket in a queue without receiving the data, so it can go back to listening quickly.
In its own time, the Server picks up the waiting socket, spawns a new thread, reads the Message, and closes the socket.
The code
Here's my first thoughts on how this should be implemented. There is a fundamental flaw in it which I will explain below.

This is because the Java 7 try blocks I'm using close the sockets once they're finished. So why don't I do this manually? Try yourself - you end up with a warning saying you're only ever going to call close() on a null object!
So, how do I avoid the whole issue of my incoming socket being closed before the Server thread picks up on it? Or is this a bad idea anyway and I should do something else?
Your statement in Listener

Is a try-with-resources for the client socket. As soon as you add it to the queue and exit the try block, the socket gets auto-closed.

Java Thread StackOverflowError

It had run for about 5 minutes before error occured:

Why?

Others have explained that you should use a while loop instead. You're also trying to call the run method inside your anonymous class declaration. Additionally, you should call start, rather than run - when the new thread has started, it will call run automatically. I'd actually suggest implementing Runnable rather than extending Thread, too. So you want:

Alternatively, consider using a Timer or ScheduledExecutorService.
You are calling run method as recursively. Java holds call information(such as parameters) in stack memory so when you are calling a method recursively and there isn't any end point, stack memory will consumed and StackOverflow exception throws.
Maybe you want increasing Heap Size of JVM but this solution don't solve your problem and StackOverflow will occurred .
I guess you want run a thread continually. I recommend following code:

Don't call run() from within the run() method. That'll definitely produce a stack overflow because you keep reentering the same method with no exit condition. Instead use a while loop.

Your code have infinity recursive, you should change the code to:

Your function calls itself each time you run it.
That results in a stack overflow.
Maybe because you call run method (this.run()) from itself?

Need sample program to throw InterruptedException

I am going through the kathy sierra SCJP 1.5 Chapter 9(threads) and there it is mentioned as:
Notice that the sleep() method can throw a checked InterruptedException
(you'll usually know if that is a possibility, since another thread has to explicitly do
the interrupting), so you must acknowledge the exception with a handle or declare
I just need a sample program to know when it happens (which i can run on my machine)?
I googled but could not find any sample code to test this functionality..

To walk through it:
Set up a new thread which will sleep for a short time, then interrupt the main thread
Start that new thread
Sleep for a long-ish time (in the main thread)
Print out a diagnostic method when we're interrupted (again, in the main thread)
The sleep in the main thread isn't strictly necessary, but it means that the main thread does get to really start sleeping before it's interrupted.
