I am trying to migrate a site from Wicket 1.5.8 to 1.6.20. The build fails, showing the error description:
The type org.apache.wicket.markup.html.IHeaderResponse cannot be
resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files
OKCancelWindow.java /LatinParserK/src/main/java/com/<site>/access line 1 Java Problem
The file OKCancelWindow.java shows the error on the first line
package com.<site>.access;
The project was not built since its build path is incomplete. Cannot
find the class file for org.apache.wicket.markup.html.IHeaderResponse.
Fix the build path then try building this project
LatinParserK Unknown Java Problem
I am not sure whether the specified file or the specified library is the problem. Any ideas?

This class has been moved to package org.apache.wicket.markup.head. Make sure your Wicket libraries are also upgraded to 6.x.

I archived the code and started from a fresh build. There were still problems, which were resolved after I found this code in pom.xml.

The specified library (1.5.6) was not compatible with version 6.20.0 code. A change to
<version>${wicket.version}</version>

Resolving conflict between transitive dependencies

I have a pom.xml where i've got hadoop-core dependency as provided

I've got an exception "java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: javax.ws.rs.core.Response.someMethod". I've investigated the problem and find out that the problem is from hadoop and cfg4j-consul. Hadoop core depends to jersey-core and cfg4j depends on cxf. Both declared javax.ws.rs as dependecy so the problem is that jersey has version 1.1 and cxf has 2.0.2. Hadoop dependency is provided, cause it's needed by Flink (framework) and it's in the lib folder. I can't just upgrade it or remove it, nor add it as compile time and exclude the lib. Even I was able to do it, I have no guarantees that hadoop will work as expected. I guess shading doesn't fix the problem cause it's not with cfg4j but one of the dependency of his dependency.
Is there way to resolve the conflict? Does gradle has it's onw ways to fix such issue?
Two approaches:
Shading: A bit more difficult as you say because this a transitive dependency, but I would have a look a Maven shade plugin and it would still be possible to declare the dependency directly if necessary.
Don't use the dependency and try to find some other library or solution for your problem.

Your issue has nothing to do with the choice between Mavern and Gradle, switching therefor will not help.
Fixing a NoSuchMethodError
There are a lot of different flavors of NoSuchMethodErrors, but they all boil down to the fact that the compile time classpath differs from the runtime classpath.
The following steps will help to pinpoint the problem:
Step 1: Find Out Where the Class Comes From
First, we need to find out where the class containing the method in question comes from. We find this information in the error message of the NoSuchMethodError:

Now, we can search the web or within the IDE to find out which JAR file contains this class. In the case above, we can see that it’s the Service class from our own codebase and not a class from another library.
If we have trouble finding the JAR file of the class, we can add the Java option -verbose:class when running our application. This will cause Java to print out all classes and the JARs they have been loaded from:

Step 2: Find Out Who Calls the Class
Next, we want find out where the method is being called. This information is available in the first element of the stack trace:

at io.reflectoring.nosuchmethod.ProvokeNoSuchMethodError.main(ProvokeNoSuchMethodError.java:7)
Here, the class ProvokeNoSuchMethodError tries to call a method that does not exist at runtime. We should now find out which library this file belongs to.
Step 3: Check the Versions
Now that we know where the NoSuchMethodError is provoked and what method is missing, we can act.
We should now list all of our project dependencies.
In Gradle, we can call:
./gradlew dependencies > dependencies.txt
If we’re using Maven, a similiar result can be achieved with:
mvn dependency:list > dependencies.txt`
In this file, we can search for the libraries that contain the class with the missing method and the class that tries to call this method.
Usually we’ll find an output like this somewhere:
\--- org.springframework.retry:spring-retry:1.2.2.RELEASE
| \--- org.springframework:spring-core:4.3.13.RELEASE -> 5.0.8.RELEASE
The above means that the spring-retry library depends on spring-core in version 4.3.13, but some other library also depends on spring-core in version 5.0.8 and overrules the dependency version.
We can now search our dependencies.txt file for 5.0.8.RELEASE to find out which library introduces the dependency to this version.
Finally, we need to decide which of the two versions we actually need to satisfy both dependencies. Usually, this is the newer version since most frameworks are backwards compatible to some point. However, it can be the other way around or we might even not be able to resolve the conflict at all.

Upgrading gwt from 2.1.1 to 2.8.0: ServiceConfigurationError: org.apache.juli.logging.Log: Provider org.eclipse.jetty.apache.jsp.JuliLog not a subtype

After upgrading gwt from version 2.1.1 to 2.8.0, I got the error message

I found some other posts with similar messages, like this or this, but the situation seems to be different:
I do not use Maven or Ant, just pure IntelliJ, I have no reference to any Tomcat library, and I am not aware of any JSP in our application.
I found through debugging that first the class loader com.google.gwt.dev.shell.jetty.Jettylauncher$WebAppContextWithReload$WebAppClassLoaderExtension loads class org.eclipse.jetty.apache.jsp.JuliLog including interface org.apache.juli.logging.Log.
Then, later interface org.apache.juli.logging.Log is loaded by sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader triggered indirectly by
org.eclipse.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext.startContext()
which calls method initialize of an
org.eclipse.jetty.jsp.JettyJspServlet
instance.
I have no idea why a JspServlet needs to be initialized at all, as no JSPs are used in the application, as far as I see, just a few Servlets. And it seems all the classes involved in this conflict are contained in the single jar gwt-dev.jar, so I see no possibility to influence any class loading behavior via class path settings.
Any idea how I could resolve this?
I also got this error upgrading from gwt from version 2.4 to 2.8.2.

To solve this, I ran a maven dependency tree on my project to figure out what was referencing jetty's apache-jsp.
To run the dependency tree, in Eclipse I created a new run configuration -> maven build -> with the goals "dependency:tree -Doutput=/dependency/file.txt". Once it's run, the console output will show where it saves the output. It should be the same location that you referenced with the -Doutput option.
Look for something like this in the output file:
- org.eclipse.jetty:apache-jsp:jar:9.2.14.v20151106:compile
And then look up in the tree to see where it's being pulled in from. In my case it came from this:
+- com.google.gwt:gwt-dev:jar:2.8.2:compile
+- net.sourceforge.htmlunit:htmlunit:jar:2.19:compile
\- org.eclipse.jetty:apache-jsp:jar:9.2.14.v20151106:compile
Once you know where it's coming from, (assuming you're using maven) you can add an exclusion in your pom.xml file for it:

I saw this error when I recently upgraded to GWT 2.8.0. Please try to exclude jetty-apache-Jsp related dependencies from your project.
You may see other jetty related issues as well, so please also make sure you are using exactly the same jetty version as GWT 2.8.0 is using.
I'm on mobile at the moment, unable to add more details, but I hope that can be a useful direction to go. Please add your comments if you still see issues, I will then have a look and update the answer when I'm on my laptop.
I have just ran into this exception after adding gwt-test-utils:0.53 dependency (with GWT 2.8.1)
I am using ant and all information found regarding this error indicated there was 2 versions of Juli Logging in the classpath, but every search came up with only gwt-dev.jar. Production builds worked fine, but dev mode did not which needs gwt-dev.jar.
Part of the build process has the jars copied from a local lib directory to war/WEB-INF/lib to pack into the war. The ant script points to the local lib directory for debugging, not the ones meant for the war file. Despite the war location not being listed in the ant file as a class path, it was still loading it.
Ultimately, gwt-dev.jar was conflicting with the copied version of itself.

Cannot instantiate the type ADBDataSource using axis2

After using Eclipse EE and Eclipse Axis2 Code Generator plugin, I got a two
operation generated java files with the same error:
Cannot instantiate the type ADBDataSource ConcatRequest.java
Cannot instantiate the type ADBDataSource ConcatResponse.java
Here is the problem:
org.apache.axiom.om.OMDataSource dataSource = new
org.apache.axis2.databinding.ADBDataSource(this,MY_QNAME);
This code appears in both ConcatRequest.java and ConcatResponse.java and
causes the error. I see that ADBDataSource is abstract and cannot be instantiated.
I'm totally new to Axis and I don't know how to solve this problem. Please help.
I had this problem due to a version mismatch of axis2-adb. Safest way to deal with this problem is to have a look at the lib folder of the eclipse plugin (eclipse/(dropins|plugins)/ ... .jar). Then look for the versions of the dependecies and include them (the ones you actually need) in your build path.
i faced the same issue while generating JAVA Stubs from WSDL. Following are the steps I used to solve the issues :

Now there is a small tweak to this link. After doing point no 10 & 11 as mentioned in the above link , only use axis2-1.7.9 to generate your stubs and when they are generated used the jars mentioned in the \axis2-1.7.9\lib in your build path.

Old topic, but I was working on a legacy project with several subprojects.
In one of those subprojects, I came across this same message.
It also was a version problem (Maven dependencies...).
Ctrl-Click (in Eclipse/IntelliJ) on "ADBDataSource". Which version is it? For me it was 1.5.6, but in my pom.xml there was only

However, this subproject had a dependency on another subproject which WAS using 1.5.6 (I found it by searching in the whole project for "1.5.6" using the Notepad++ "Search / Find in Files" menu option).
Then in the dependency to that other project, I excluded 1.5.6 :

java compilation error using findbugs. com.sun.tools.javac.code.Symbol$CompletionFailure: class file for javax.annotation.meta.When not found

I am trying to use the annotations of findbugs 1.3.2.
I used the edu.umd.cs.findbugs.annotations.NonNull annotation in a simple test,
and it works fine.
However, now I have a large project, composed of sub-modules, using maven,
and I get the following compilation error by just importing that annotation in some java file:

what can be the problem?
i tried adding the findbugs dependency in all sub-modules.
maybe it is a conflict with jsr305? I see that one of our dependencies uses jsr305 1.3.9.
In my experience, this error always occurs when you use #NonNull and jsr305.jar is not on the classpath. In order to use the findbugs annotations, you must add both annotations.jar and jsr305.jar to the classpath.
Some annotations (I am thinking of #SuppressWarnings) can be used without jsr305.jar, but #NonNull requires it for sure.
(You mentioned jsr305.jar in your question, but you didn't say explicitly that you've checked. Also, people are going to land here when searching for the error message, and they will need to add jsr305.jar.) Only one version of jsr305.jar should be on the classpath.

Signer information does not match

I'm receiving the following error on log file.
(java.lang.SecurityException: class
"com.adventnet.snmp.snmp2.SecurityModelTable"'s signer information
does not match signer information of other classes in the same
package thrown
The thing is when I run the below command, it says the jar is verified.
/usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0/bin/jarsigner -verify -verbose Jarfile.jar
If the jar file is verified then how can this problem occur?
It means that you have two or more classes in the same package with different signature data. Usually that means the classes come from different JARs, one of which is signed and the other is unsigned.
Check the pom dependency tree for same packages of different versions.
I had this issue with itext-2.1.7 including old bouncycastle's bcpkix that was included in a later version elsewhere.
Use this pattern:

Update: To check the dependency tree details of package_Y you can use mvn dependency:tree -Dverbose -Dincludes=package_Y. For more info check maven documentation on resolving dependency tree problems. Also Eclipse has quite a nice dependency tree viewer.
I encountered this exception while running a Scala/Spark project in Eclipse (Mars) on Windows and it prevented me from debugging and running the project in the IDE. The project used a Maven pom.xml file. It took a while to resolve, so I'm posting detailed steps here to help others:
Go to the folder where your project pom.xml file is
Run the command: mvn dependency:tree -Dverbose >Depends.Txt
Make sure you don't have a Depends.Txt or it will be overwritten!
Search in the Depends.Txt file for the unsigned class that the Eclipse IDE is complaining about. In my case, it was javax.servlet.
You may find it in a section that looks like this:
+- org.apache.hadoop:hadoop-mapreduce-client-core:jar:2.6.0:provided
+- javax.servlet:servlet-api:jar:2.5:provided
The Maven group ID that you want to exclude the duplicate class from in the above is: hadoop-mapreduce-client-core
Add an exclusions section listing the groupid of the exclusion in the pom.xml after the offending package. In my case, this was the groupid javax.servlet.
Note that you can't resolve this issue by reordering the Java build path as some have posted for a similar problem.
I encountered this issue in a Spring boot application. My issue was that I had JUnit on the build path which has Org.hamcrest.Matchers.* and Hamcrest which was resident in the library of the Spring framework in my pom.xml for the Eclipse repository. What I did was remove JUnit from my build path and included it only in my pom.xml. My application depended on Maven for JUnit and the *Matchers, so somehow you have two jars for one need, maybe as a library and as a configuration file.
In my program, I have loaded two versions of the same package. One is boprov-jdk15-140.jar, the other is bcprov-jdk15-151.jar. The two are conflicted.
In the JAR package's MANIFEST.MF file, it has the following digest:
Name: org/bouncycastle/crypto/digests/SM3Digest.class
SHA1-Digest: xxxxxxxx
The two JAR files have different SHA1-Digest info.
In my case I had:
Caused by: java.lang.SecurityException: class "org.bouncycastle.util.Strings"'s signer information does not match signer information of other classes in the same package
It was a project with a lot of dependencies and the mvn dependency:tree information did not really helped me.
Here is how I solved my issue:
I did a search "Find in files" using notepad++ on all the M2_REPO
I found a project which redefined "Strings" class in a package exactly identical to "org.bouncycastle.util.Strings" which should originate from the "org.bouncycastle:bcprov-jdk15on" dependency.
Once found, I moved all of these problematic classes in a new package and updated this project version.
Finally I updated the pom of the project which caused me trouble in the first place to use my dependency that uses the new package name.
Problem solved.
I had the following error:
java.lang.SecurityException: class “org.bouncycastle.asn1.ASN1ObjectIdentifier”‘s signer information does not match signer information of other classes in the same package
I was facing this exception when I was trying to make a PDF password protected.
I added the below jars to resolve the problem.
