I'm making a litle game in android studio where I want background music to play when the user is interacting with the application (and have it turned on in the settings). For this I used a service for playing backgroundmusic. As you can see below

I want my backgroundmusic to play on all my activities, but stop when the user leaves the application, as it is impossible to detect a menu button press or a home button press in android. I tried to solve it like this.

The idea is that when an activity starts, it calls Deactivate(); and when it closes, it calls Activate(); so that the value of Activated is updated after a short period of time. I added the following method to my BackgrondMusicService class in order to be able to turn it off remotely

Now the problem, it gives me the error that the reference to the mediaplayers in the method I just showed, is one referring to a null object, and I don't know why or why it won't work. Can someone help?

If you only want the service running while activities are using it, consider getting rid of startService(). Instead, use bindService() in the onStart() methods of the activities that need the service, and call unbindService() in their corresponding onStop() methods. You can use BIND_AUTO_CREATE to have the service be lazy-started when needed, and Android will automatically stop the service after all connections have been unbound.

I can start and stop the player from the fragment with no problems. What I am trying to solve for is the occasion where the user previews the music and then closes/minimizes the app - without turning the music off (stopPlayer()) in the MusicFragment (the music still playing).
In that case the app closes but the music is still ongoing. My understanding is that fragments (in this case MusicFragment) do not have onPause(). The Main_Activity does have onPause - but when I read the MediaPlayer's status via the Main_Activity's onPause() it displays the playerStatus as "NULL" even though song1 is still playing on the device while the app is closed.
I've tried to exclude the additional Music class and just create the MediaPlayer in the MusicFragment but the result is the same. Obviously if the Fragment had an OnPause I would call the stopSong() method from there. I think I'm not understanding a fundamental concept. Any assist would be greatly appreciated.
You can make the stopSong() method in MusicFragment public. Create an instance of MusicFragment in your activity and then call the stopSong() method.

I have a Timer in my App that infinitely runs an Animation. like this:

Now I realized that this code runs even if user click Back Button of android. if fact it runs in the background and it seems uses a lot of memory.
I need this code run ONLY if user in the app. In fact when user click on Back Button, this Timer goes to end and if user clicks on Home Button, after a while that user doesn't use the App, terminates this Timer.
What I need is to prevent using memory. Because i realized if this codes runs a while, App freezes! I need a normal behavior.
If your Activity is the last element in the BackStack, then it will be put in the background as if you pressed the Home button.
As such, the onPause() method is triggered.
You can thus cancel your animation there.

You should as well start your animation in the onResume() method.
Note that onResume() is also called right after onCreate(); so it's even suitable to start the animation from a cold app start.

onPause() will be also called if you start another Application from your app (e.g: a Ringtone Picker). In the same way, when you head back to your app, onResume() will be triggered.
There is no need to add the same line of code in onBackPressed().
Also, what's the point in stopping the animation in onStop() or onDestroy()?
Do it in onPause() already. When your are app goes into the background, the animation will already be canceled and won't be using as much memory.
Don't know why I see such complicated answers.
You can do it like this, in onBackPressed() or onDestroy(), whatever suits you.

I have used the below code in a production app and it works. I have however edited it (removed app specific references and code) into a basic sample that should give you a very good start.
The static mIsAppVisible variable can be called anywhere (via your App class) in your app to check if code should run based on the condition that the app needs to be in focus/visible.
You can also check mIsAppInBackground in your activities that extend ParentActivity to see if the app is actually interactive, etc.

For your use you might want to create a method in your activity (code snippet assumes MainActivity) that handles the animation to call the t.cancel(); method that penguin suggested. You could then in the ParentActivity.applicationDidEnterBackground() method add the following:

I have MainActivity and on its onResume method I call pattern lock to create and confirm user identity. User visits and leave this MainActivity back and forth while active on the app as well as when phone is in sleep mode and user unlocks it. These both scenarios will call onRestart, onStart and onResume methods, but I only want to revoke the pattern in unlock scenario.
handlePattern() method needs a proper distinguishing to be called.
How to distinguish this when I call the handlePattern method ?

As the title suggests I am trying to create a Stopwatch app and am having problems adding a lap button and continue button that work. I have added the buttons to the layout.xml file but am having trouble with the java code that gets them to function.
I need to display the "stopped/paused" time when the lap button is clicked, the internal clock needs to keep running however and no longer be displayed, or the stopped/paused time needs to be shown in a new display whichever is easier to accomplish. When the lap timer is clicked subsequently it should display the current time (internal clock)
I need the continue button to then resume the paused/stopped time.

I am just having problems getting things to run smoothly as I'm not too fluent in my Java, apologies, that is why help is needed. The logic isn't quite there. The continue button doesn't function properly nor does the lap, I'm needing it to function as described above.

I just found by myself the answer by search on google and try for 5 hours.. :D

First, I mix the ControlApplication and Waiter with ControlActivity. Thats mean I don't need both files. My ControlActivity will extends the activity (its use for me to intent to the other page if in idle mode), and i will implements runnable(its use for me to run the thread).
after that i have a method called onUserInteraction(), this method help me to get the user interaction, whenever the user touch or click something.
in the onCreate, i initiate all the variable including lastUsed, period, and stop.
why should I initiate that? because you need to know how many seconds to know that your apps is on idle mode or not. that was period use. Stop variable is use for me to iterate and searching every 5 seconds(you can also make it every second to check idle or not) my apps is idle or not. I initiate lastUsed by calling method touch. I copied touch method from ControlApplication into my ControlActivity. By calling touch method, I can know when is my lastused. After that I start my thread.
in my run method, i set idle = 0. and do some looping to check. i check every 5 seconds to know my apps is on idle mode or not.
idle = System.System.currentTimeMillis()-lastUsed -> i used this to know if the idle is already suite with the period or not using if method.
if the idle is greater than period, my apps must be in idle mode. after that i stop the iteration and using handler to manage it.
i set handler.sendEmptyMessage(0), and create Handler. At handler i move to the other page.
