Up button doesn't stop navigation - java

I am trying to make a non-empty field check in a fragment, when the user press the up button in the action bar (and the field is actually empty) but I am getting the next error:

My code is:
case android.R.id.home:
Log.d(TAG, "up button in action bar has been pressed!");
String titleField = mTitleField.getText().toString();
if (TextUtils.isEmpty(titleField)) {
AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(getActivity());
builder.setMessage(R.string.empty_title_message)
.setPositiveButton(android.R.string.ok, new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int which) {
dialog.dismiss();
}
});
builder.create()
.show();
} else {
NavUtils.navigateUpFromSameTask(getActivity());
return true;
}
What I was expecting was to navigate to the previous activity when the field has something in it, otherwise a dialog window should appear and stop the navigation. But instead of that, I am getting the dialog box for microseconds and then the navigation continues to the up level of my current activity.
What I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Why is dialog.show() causing my app to crash?

I've been trying to get a dialog message to work on android and the app always crash when it reaches "dialog.show();"

dialog.dismiss();
}
});
AlertDialog dialog = dialogBuilder.create();
dialog.show();
}

You can't create dialog from receiver.
Creating dialogs is allowed only from UI components (which have looper).
You could start transparent activity with dialog, which would be the same for user.
You can't create a dialog using the context of a BroadcastReceiver, you has two options to solve this problem:
first one is to create a regular Activity which has only the size of the dialog as a shown part and the full remaining is transparent:
Intent newIntent = new Intent(context, Displayer.class);
newIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
context.startActivity(newIntent);
second one is to hold your Activity context and then use it in creating the dialog, but at this method you have to make sure what is the activity that is currently open:
// in your activity onCreate
ctx = YourActivity.this; // let's suppose ctx is static and general var
////////////////////////////////////////////////
// in the BroadcastReceiver
AlertDialog.Builder dialogBuilder = new AlertDialog.Builder(YourActivity.ctx);

unfortunately App has Stopped- Passing Intent data between two Activites

I am trying to pass String data using intent from Authorites.class to Issues.class . When a radio button is chosen and button is clicked, 1st activity has to show toast as well as pass the Radio button value to next activity.
When i choose the radio-button and press the button in Authorites.class,the app stops and exits. Plz find where have i gone wrong

Because you are getting string value1 data from getString("Auth") of Intent in Issues class but in Authorities class you are not putting any ("Auth") value in Intent obj.
So uncomment this line...
i.putExtra("Auth",auth);
then run the project...

MainActivity.java:106) is builder.show()
MainActivity.java:276) connectIfNecessary();
I am getting errors for hours, at first about appcompat, then manifest then layout now this.
I use real tablet device.
When device is not connected , following would be execution flow
Get inside connectIfNecessary()
Create Alert to ask user to enable internet. Please note that only Alter object is created at this moment, it will be displayed on screen only after stack of main thread unwinds.
Return from connectIfNecessary() create instance of updateDB(). Inside this application is crashing
Few simple changes would fix your code.
add isConnected() if check before creating instance of updateDB(). This will cover the CONNECTED case
if the device is NOT CONNECTED, user will shown the alter and take to settings screen. If user enables WIFI from settings and comes back, onResume() of your activity will be called. Check connectivity and add updateDB() here.

Normally, the above code is called inside onStart/OnResume method or after these methods, not inside onStop/onSaveInstance. You are trying to do some operation after activity is getting killed. Perform serivcesConnected call before onStop/finish/saveInstances method call.

According to the official documentation, "Before any operation is executed, the GoogleApiClient must be connected"
When the user in not connected(signed in) and clicks to show leaderboards or achievements, it results in the exception thrown. Modify your code for launching the leaderboard like this:
} else if(view.getId()==R.id.highscorebutton) {
if (isSignedIn())
startActivityForResult(Games.Leaderboards.getLeaderboardIntent(getApiClient(), getString(R.string.the_best_players)), REQUEST_LEADERBOARD);
else showAlert("Please sign in to view leaderboards");
}
Use the same logic for showing achievements:
if (isSignedIn())
startActivityForResult(Games.Achievements.getAchievementsIntent(getApiClient()), REQUEST_ACHIEVEMENT);
else showAlert("Please sign in to view achievements");
Check the part where you are getting ApiClient i.e. getApiClient().
Write the code below to see if GoogleApiClient is Connected or not.
GoogleApiClient mGoogleApiClient;
if(mGoogleApiClient.isConnected()){
// good
}else{
//connect it
mGoogleApiClient.connect(GoogleApiClient.SIGN_IN_MODE_OPTIONAL);
}
