How to add multiple backslashes to a string in java? - java

I would like to add 2 numbers of backslash to the prefix of a RegEx to overcome dangling metacharacter exception. I am using the following piece of code:

Even I tried with multiple \\s like, still, it adds only one backslash to the RegEx.

Remove pattern from string in Java

I am currently working on a tool, which helps me to analyze a constantly growing String, that can look like this: String s = "AAAAAAABBCCCDDABQ". What I want to do is to find a sequence of A's and B's, do something and then remove that sequence from the original String.
My code looks like this:

You should use a regex replacement loop, i.e. the methods appendReplacement(StringBuffer sb, String replacement) and appendTail(StringBuffer sb).
To find one of many patterns, use the | regex matcher, and capture each pattern separately.
You can then use group(int group) to get the matched string for each capture group (first group is group 1), which returns null if that group didn't match. For better performance, to simply check whether the group matched, use start(int group), which returns -1 if that group didn't match.
Example:

This basically replace sequence of each character for single one.
If you want to remove the sequence completely, just replace ch to "" in replaceAll method parameters inside if body.

This matches 10 characters that are neither / nor ? following a slash if those characters are followed by a final slash or a question mark.
You can get the part that precedes or follows the ASIN using one of the various Matcher functions.

You can use the above method as follows:

This will catch the whole URL, including params. You can then split it up to the first occurence of '?' (if any) and take the first part. Of course, you can rework the regex too.

Regex in Java not working while same regex is working in shell

I want to replace all :variable (word starting with :) with ${variable}$.
For example,
:aks_num with ${aks_num}$
:brn_num with ${brn_num}$

While in shell script the following regex works perfectly:
s/:\([a-z_]*\)/${\1}$/g
:\\([a-z_]*\\) (with escaped parenthesis) means that you want to match expressions like :(aks_num). Obviously, there are no such expression in the input string. That explains why there are no matches.
Instead, if you want to use parenthesis in order to capture some variables, you should not escape the parenthesis.
Example :

You don't need to escape the parentheses, so
Pattern.compile(":([a-z_]*)");
should work.
I believe you got confused with the Java's regex syntax that is different from regular sed syntax. You do not need to escape parentheses to make them "special" grouping operators. Vice versa, in Java, when you escape parentheses, they start matching literal ( and ) symbols.
In the replacement pattern, $ must be escaped for the regex engine to replace with literal $ symbols, but you do not need to escape braces there.
So, just use
.replaceAll(":([a-z_]+)", "\\${$1}\\$")

I suggest the + quantifier because I doubt you need to match a : followed with a space, or digits - any non-letter.
BTW, you do not need any /g flag in Java since replaceAll will replace all matches with the provided replacement pattern.
NOTE: you can further adjust the pattern to match all letters/digits/underscores with ":(\\w+)". Or just alphanumerics/underscore: ":([\\p{Alnum}_]+)".

How to disguise escape character - \" within a string

I am facing a little difficulty with a Syntax highlighter that I've made and is 90% complete. What it does is that it reads in the text from the source of a .java file, detects keywords, comments, etc and writes a (colorful) output in an HTML file. Sample output from it is:

As (I hope) you can see, my program seems to work correctly with keywords, literals and comments (see below) and hence can normally document almost all programs. But it seems to break apart when I store the escape sequence for " i.e. \" inside a String. An error case is shown below:
The string literal highlighting doesn't stop at the end of the literal, but continues until it finds another cue, like a keyword or another literal.
So, the question is how do I disguise/hide/remove this \" from within a String?

The trouble with finding a quote and then trying to work out whether it's escaped is that it's not enough to simply look at the previous character to see if it's a backslash - consider
String basedir = "C:\\Users\\";
where the \" isn't an escaped quote, but is actually an escaped backslash followed by an unescaped quote. In general a quote preceded by an odd number of backslashes is escaped, one preceded by an even number of backslashes isn't.
A more sensible approach would be to parse through the string one character at a time from left to right rather than trying to jump ahead to quote characters. If you don't want to have to learn a proper parser generator like JavaCC or antlr then you can tackle this case with regular expressions using the \G anchor (to force each subsequent match to start at the end of the previous one with no gaps) - if we assume that str is a substring of your input starting with the character following the opening quote of a string literal then

So what we need to do is test for those cases in the regex. Here is the pattern:

(\\?)? optionally matches and captures a ?
&? optionally captures an &
(TXT\\{[^}]++}) matches and captures TXT, followed by {, followed by one or most not } (possessively), followed by } (closing brackets don't need to be escaped

Now when we find a match we need to replace with the appropriate capture of case 1..3

If groups 1 and 3 are both present:
We must be in case 1; we must replace with "?" which is in group 1 so $1.
Otherwise we are in case 2 or 3:
In case 2 we need to replace with "&" and in 3 with "".
In case 2 group 3 will hold "&" and in case 3 it will hold "" so we can replace with $3 in both these cases.
Here I only capture the TXT{...} part using a match group. This means that although the leading ? or & is replaced it is not in the String found. I you only want the bit between {} then just move the parenthesis.
Note that I reuse the Pattern - you can also reuse the Matcher if performance is a concern. You should always reuse the Pattern as it is (very) expensive to create. Store it in a static final if you can - it's threadsafe, matchers are not. The usual way to do it is to store the Pattern in a static final and then reuse the Matcher in the context of a method.
Also, the use of Matcher.appendReplacement is much more efficient than your current approach as it only needs to process the input once. Your approach parses the string twice.
