I'm trying to run a program that uses the JavaFX scene object TextInputDialog. For some reason, it doesn't allow me to import javafx.scene.control.TextInputDialog (says "cannot be resolved").
I'm new to JavaFX, but here is what I tried. I thought it was my Java version, so I updated to the latest (1.8.0_91). I'm using Eclipse Neon 4.6.0. To install JavaFX it used the "install new software" option in the help menu, and put in the link found in step 4 of this: https://www.eclipse.org/efxclipse/install.html. After that, most of the JavaFX functions worked by adding the requisite import command. But this one doesn't.
I also found that some people have included the JavaFX library in the build path. I didn't change anything when I did that (though I'm not sure exactly what that would do since I already installed JavaFX in Eclipse).
Anyway, any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks!
You need to make sure that eclipse is using the newer JRE for this project. You can do this by going to Project > Properties > Java Build Path and selecting the newer JRE from the list. I believe it needs to be 1.8.0_45 or newer.

open the File | Project Structure dialog, there under Platform Settings select SDKs and then your JDK 1.8. On the right you then see all the jars that make up the classpath to your SDK. Make sure that your jfxrt.jar is in that list, if not, you can add it by clicking the '+' button at the bottom.

JavaFX is no longer part of the Oracle or OpenJDK default distributions. Instead it is available as a seperate library or module set.

You don't need to "install the desired jar" (whatever that means).
You don't need to do that for JavaFX. You should not do anything explicitly with jfxrt.jar either in the filesystem or by adding it to a project classpath. If doing something on the filesystem, that is especially bad as jfxrt.jar is not made to be standalone and requires related native libraries shipped with the JDK in order to work.
The JavaFX code should be part of the JDK installation you are using. Perhaps you are using a Java version below 8 or an OpenJDK implementation that does not include JavaFX. If so, then install the Oracle JDK 8+ and set idea to use it. Everything should just work then and all of related JavaFX imports will resolve.
I'm trying to get JavaFX applications to run on Android by using the Dalvik JavaFX-Android SDK (provided by the JavaFX Android porting team). So I downloaded the samples provided by the JavaFX Android porting team and have been trying to run one of them on Android without much success.
Using Eclipse with the Gradle plugin I imported the "HelloWorldFxml" sample project. Then I ran the Gradle task "./gradlew androidInstall" on the project like the README file told me. But unfortunately the task cannot execute because Gradle cannot locate my JDK:

Anyone that can provide some insight as to how I can fix this?

Even though the error message doesn't specify it, maybe it's looking for javac in your PATH? In case it's not in there try adding ;%JAVA_HOME%\bin to the end of your PATH variable (and restart Eclipse afterwards, I've had the problem of running processes not getting changes to environment variables before).
Check the Java setting in Eclipse:
Window -> Preferences
Java -> Installed JREs
Make sure that your JDK 1.8 is listed there. If it's not, add it using the Add... button.
Once the JDK is known to Eclipse, make sure that your project's settings use that JDK as a compiler, and the Gradle plugin should be able to pick up the setting from there.
In a pinch, you should also be able to run Gradle from the command line, and it should work fine since you already set the %JAVA_HOME% variable.
Basic Note
Since the release of dalvik-sdk-8u40-ea3, and in very short time, the JavaFXPorts team has released a few new versions, all of them simplifying all the process of porting a JavaFX application to Android or iOS.
They released dalvik-sdk-8u40-ea4 and they announced the release of a new plugin, that will simplify to the minimum the steps to create a mobile application from JavaFX.
While this answer may not help the OP in his particular problem, definitely it will help him and others, since everything is really simplified.
New approach
With this plugin, there's a new way of creating the HelloWorldFxml application for Android.
The new javafxmobile-plugin allows you to generate the apk with a single 'build.gradle' file.
You can find this an other basic samples here, and download the repository here.
You won't need to edit a single line, just type this on the command line, on the root of the sample, with your device connected:
gradlew androidInstall
As for previous releases, you will need JDK8u40 and Android SDK installed. No need for dalvik-sdk though, it's retrieved by the plugin.
Notice that you can open these samples from your IDE, so you will be able to modify them, and run them locally or build again the apk for your device.

My proberties:
-Windows 7
-Dalvik SDK (dalvik-sdk-8u60-b5)
-JDK 8 (newest Version 8_60 / IMPORTANT: JDK not JRE)
-And I tried also the HelloAndroid project provided by the Dalvik-SDK-download.
So i execute the command line: gradlew installDebug
My probelm was nearly the same.
"Fail to find JDK. Please make sure there is a JAVA_HOME or JAVA8_HOME systemvariable."

So to make everything sure, I created both with the same path. Cause I don't know exactly which one is used by gradle.

This is really the hack that helps me out. Found this also in StackOverflow.
Write in your build.gradle under the android{..} stuff this line:
retrolambda {
jdk 'C:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.8.0_60' //<--your JDK-path
}
it looks like that
Then execute the same command line again and it worked for me.
I think only the 2. steps was the solution, cause I guess gradle don't look for the variable if there is a direct path to the jdk.
Alright so basically, I'm trying to run Eclipse with JavaFX, but then it gives me this error:
You are not running your eclipse instance with Java7 or Java8. The JavaFX tooling is disabled because of this.Make Java7/8 the default system java or adjust your eclipse.ini to pass -vm pointing to your Java7/8 install.
In case you want to turn off this check open your preferences and go to General > Startup and Shutdown and uncheck 'JavaFX Tooling Java Check'
Now I know it isn't pointing to the right SDK, but I have no idea how to change it, since I'm kind of new to this this stuff. I've already downloaded JDK 7.40 as well. I'm also using Ubuntu on a virtual machine, if that even matters anyway. Can anyone help me, I'd appreciate it.

It looks like the default java on your system is not java7. What do you get when opening a shell and execute java -version? Solution is to:
A) make java7 the default java
B) start eclipse with -vm
Apparently, you have installed 32bit Eclipse and 64bit JRE/JDK on a 64bit OS. Please use 64bit Eclipse and the problem will be solved. Please make sure JAVA_HOME And JRE_HOME is present in environment variables.
I had the same issue. I tried re-installing Eclipse, but it wouldn't work. I had to completely remove the project and delete all the project files. After that, I re-started eclipse and created the project again. However, this time I made sure the project path included the Java FX library as shown in the screen shot.

I did this while I was creating the project and then I was able to create the project without any issues. Give this a try.
I wanted to start learning java but Eclipse is giving me some trouble.
First of all I'm a beginner with Java with little to no knowledge about it. I want to use 'JavaSe-1.7'. I have no clear reason to use it besides using the latest version. After downloading Eclipse (Eclipse IDE for Java Developers) I created a new Java project and selected 'use an execution eviorment JRE : JavaSE-1.7'. This directly popped the notification saying 'The default compiler compliance level for the current workspace is 1.6. The new project will use a project specific compiler compliance level of 1.7.'. I finished creating the project and started following some tutorials.
However I noticed directly I have 2 errors which dont explain anything or have a source. I ignored it and started typing and tried to import 'java.io.console' however it said 'The import java.io cannot be resolved' and I have no idea what is the cause of it neither how to fix this.
Would like some instructions into the right direction.

Check your Eclipse preferences: Java -> Installed JREs. The one that you're using should be marked and it should be a JDK not just a JRE.
Also check your project's build path: Right click on the project -> Properties -> Java Build Path
Check in the "libraries" folder whether the JRE System Library is present and if not add it using "Add library"->"JRE System Library" and then select the correct one (from an installed JDK).
You may not have your JDK/JRE set up correctly.
Check the following:
Did you install a JDK or just the JSE? The JDK is needed to compile .java files to .class files. Without it, you can only run java programs, not develop them. If not, download and install it from Oracle website.
Check in Eclipse, if you have the JRE installed there as well. You just need to specify the path to the installation. You can reach this screen via the "Window->Prefrences" menu. see this screenshot:
The message you receive about project specific compiler compliance level is not a problem, it just means that your workspace is set up to comply to java 1.6 but your project will comply to java 1.7 standards. Also, Java 7 in general is no problem whatsoever.
Paths may differ, especially if you're not running a *nix OS. Just point the location to where you installed your JDK.

Java is not a first class citizen of Xcode anymore, so you should in my opinion stay with Eclipse.
I realise this question is 6 years old, but I have a similar problem and found what seems an easy solution. I have an old Java project (2008-9) which I maintain but has been dormant. As I prefer to keep it into Xcode I transferred the whole project (sources, project files and all paraphernalia) to a new development machine running el Capitan with Xcode 7.3.1. I opened the project (which was still in 3.1 version) with it, and tried to build it. It failed as Ant was missing. So I downloaded Ant (version 1.10.1) and copied its bin and lib directories under /usr/local/ant, then I changed the project external build tool configuration (under project, go to Info, and you'll see that parameter) which was set to /usr/bin/ant and set it to /usr/local/ant/bin/ant or wherever you put it. Build again and this time it worked.
