I have a ListView that contains "Task "objects. I want to be able to select a task from the ListView and get the values of that specific object. I am trying to do this by calling a method (startTask()) that gets the selected item in the ListView (a task object) and gets its values by using the getter methods in the task object. For the moment i am just printing the object to the console.
When I run the application this is the error that I get.

Exception running application application.Main
Here is the fxml file that contains the ListView and Button with startTask() method call when the button is clicked
<Tab text="Tasks">
<content>
<AnchorPane minHeight="0.0" minWidth="0.0" prefHeight="180.0" prefWidth="200.0">
<children>
<Label fx:id="noOfTasks" layoutX="403.0" layoutY="294.0" prefHeight="17.0" prefWidth="190.0" text="You have 0 tasks to be completed" />
<ListView fx:id="taskList" layoutX="8.0" layoutY="14.0" prefHeight="274.0" prefWidth="585.0" />
<Button layoutX="8.0" layoutY="299.0" mnemonicParsing="false" text="Start Task" OnAction="#startTask()"/>
</children>
</AnchorPane>
</content>
</Tab>
Here is the startTask() method
public void startTask(){
Task taskToStart = taskList.getSelectionModel().getSelectedItem();
System.out.println(taskToStart);
}
Here is my initialisation of ListView in Controller.java
public ListView<Task> taskList = new ListView<Task>();
Any help would be much appreciated thanks.
Specifying controller methods as event handlers requires you to use a # followed by the method's name and nothing else (see also Introduction to FXML - Controller Method Event Handlers ). Remove the () from the onAction attribute:
<Button layoutX="8.0" layoutY="299.0" mnemonicParsing="false" text="Start Task" onAction="#startTask"/>
Furthermore there should be no need to initialize the ListView using a constructor call in the code, if you inject it from the fxml; Furthermore a ListView created using a constructor call won't insert itself to the scene. It's likely that you just create a second ListView that is never shown. Instead there should be a ListView field with the name taskList in the controller class; this field should not be initialized from java code:
#FXML
private ListView<Task> taskList;
You can try something like this...
ObservableList<Node> list=taskList.getChildren();
for(int i=0;i<list.size();i++) {
Task task=list.get(i);
}

The problem is .load() function at
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("/resources/PrimaryScene.fxml"));
Seems like it doesn't see the fxml file. I have done research on many similar questions here and there, but none of them helped. I tried multiple paths or moving fxml to main class etc.
Might be some problem with IDE configuration, i don't know what else can i do to make it work.
Im working with IntelliJ Idea Java 1.8(so JavaFX is automatically added). What may be important is the project was created as Empty Project not a JavaFX Project. I tried running another project as JavaFX project and it worked fine.
Im attaching error below:

Just make sure to put the fxml file into the src/main/resources/ directory of your project.
Also make sure that src/main/resources is marked as the resource root in intelij
Right click on folder -> Mark directory as -> "Resource Root"
Then use
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/PrimaryScene.fxml"));
Also duplicate of JavaFX and maven: NullPointerException: Location is required
I am facing problem in loading fxml file from different packge.
Project Structure
My class that loads the FXML file PlayArea.java looks like this:
package controller;
import javafx.application.Application;
import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
import javafx.scene.Parent;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.stage.Stage;
/**

public class PlayArea extends Application {
#Override
public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception {
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/gui/FXMLDocument.fxml"));
Scene scene = new Scene(root);
stage.setScene(scene);
stage.show();
}
/**
* #param args the command line arguments
*/
public static void main(String[] args) {
launch(args);
}
}
My fxml file that is FXMLDocument.fxml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Exception running application controller.PlayArea
The problem is with your this line
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/gui/FXMLDocument.fxml"));
just replace it with
Parent root = `FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("../gui/FXMLDocument.fxml"));`
if you still get the error then
create a file outsite of your packages i.e. in src folder say Main.class
now use this
FXMLLoader.load(Main.class.getResource("gui/FXMLDocument.fxml"));
You can set the controller in the fxml file itself if you're right click and open the file you will find properties and there you will have a tag called controller and you can type the exact folder path .
FXML EG
<AnchorPane id="AnchorPane" prefHeight="400.0" prefWidth="600.0" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml" fx:controller="javafxapplication.FXMLController">
</AnchorPane>
Updating the previous answer
Here is what tried and it is working fine
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/fxml/Main.fxml"));
Scene scene = new Scene(root, 300, 275);
stage.setTitle("FXML Welcome");
stage.setScene(scene);
stage.show();
Hope this Solves the Query
I had to change 2 lines to properly open FXML file from controller located in another packet:
root = loader.load(Main.class.getResource("document.fxml").openStream());
scene.getStylesheets().add(Main.class.getResource("application.css").toExternalForm());
Instead of getClass(), there is Main.class .
This question already has an answer here:
Starting off with JavaFX : Can not set javafx.scene.control.Label field application.SceneController.myLabel to javafx.scene.text.Text

Closed 6 years ago.
I added tag #FXML and in SceneBuilder added fx:id in textfield on userid, passwordfield on userpassword.
loginController
#FXML
private TextField userid;
#FXML
private PasswordField userpassword;
And output when I start application:

Exception running application marks.Marks
Java Result: 1
loginController.java and login.fxml
It seems to me everything looks good. What's the problem?
The problem with your code is that
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Can not set javafx.scene.control.PasswordField field marks.loginController.userpassword to javafx.scene.control.TextField
In your controller you have mentioned the userpassword as PasswordField where as in FXML it is declared as
<TextField fx:id="userpassword" GridPane.columnIndex="1" GridPane.rowIndex="2" />
While mapping both should be of same type or you will get the same exception.
Thanks

Why is it so? Jar exactly contains needed fxml located at the specified path.
Java:
package sample;
import javafx.application.Application;
import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
import javafx.scene.Parent;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.stage.Stage;
public class Main extends Application {
#Override
public void start(Stage primaryStage) throws Exception{
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/sample/sample.fxml"));
primaryStage.setTitle("Hello World");
primaryStage.setScene(new Scene(root, 600, 400));
primaryStage.show();
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
launch(args);
}
}
FXML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?import javafx.scene.control.*?>
<?import javafx.scene.layout.*?>
<AnchorPane prefHeight="400.0" prefWidth="600.0" xmlns="http://javafx.com/javafx/8" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml/1">
<children>
<Button layoutX="173.0" layoutY="188.0" prefHeight="25.0" prefWidth="255.0" text="Button" />
</children>
</AnchorPane>
What am I doing wrong? Help please.
The problem is in this line:
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("/sample/sample.fxml"));
It is pretty clear that the load method is actually being called with a null argument. And that happens because getResource("/sample/sample.fxml") cannot file that resource.
The resource is missing (or has the wrong path) on the runtime classpath.
This is a problem of security. The FXML file is considered as to be loaded from the filesystem of the client, but the "user.dir, read" permission is not tolerated by the Java security manager.
However, it is a problem of signing JavaFX applets. Once signed, the loading works well. Example here: http://web.univ-pau.fr/~barbier/PauWare/My_device/dist/My_device_JavaFX.html
BTW, there is no problem with JavaFX applications
(eg, http://www.franckbarbier.com/PauWare/Programmable_thermostat/) that have self-contained widgets in the code (no load of FXML file). Cheers!!

My Controller.java file has the methods printHello and printWorld defined in them, and I would like to call them when I press their corresponding buttons. The code is as follows:
package sample;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.scene.control.Button;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
public class Controller {
#FXML
private Button helloButton;
#FXML
private Button worldButton;
#FXML
private void printHello(ActionEvent e){
System.out.println("Hello");
}
#FXML
private void printWorld(ActionEvent f){
System.out.println("World");
}
}
` In my fxml file, I have two buttons defined. Their code is as follows:
<Button fx:id="helloButton" layoutX="46.0" layoutY="87.0" mnemonicParsing="false" onAction="#printHello" text="Hello" />
<Button fx:id="worldButton" layoutX="97.0" layoutY="87.0" mnemonicParsing="false" onAction="#printWorld" text="World" />
Why is my code throwing this error?
Sorry in advance for the terrible formatting, this is my first time posting.
You have imported wrong ActionEvent in controller class.
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
Correct it to
import javafx.event.ActionEvent;
