I'm trying to deploy-on-save a sample Wicket project from Netbeans 8.0.2 with pom.xml generated as shown here: http://wicket.apache.org/start/quickstart.html. I have added Tomcat to servers and added an admin user and password (checked tomcat-users.xml, of course). When I "Run" the project, Tomcat starts, but the project is not deployed. The "Run" output shows

... and once I "Terminate" Tomcat from Servers tab, the build goes ahead and ends up with a WAR file generated in the project's target directory.
I haven't done any changes to the default Tomcat configuration other than adding a user.
By contrast, deploy-on-save works fine with Glassfish-4.1.
I've tried to change the server port and adding <netbeans.hint.deploy.server>t8</netbeans.hint.deploy.server> to pom.xml as some posts suggested (for earlier netbeans versions, though) - but no success so far.
So, is it possible to configure deploy-on-save for tomcat-8.5 in netbeans 8, and if yes, then how?
Ahhaa, upgrading to Netbeans 8.2 (from 8.02) did the trick!
Now, when you "Run" the app, another window pops up and asks for manager password again but just once. That is, the same you gave when adding a server. It seems that one has to add <role rolename="manager-script"/> to tomcat-users.xml manually to avoid this double-asking.
After the first run, the app is re-built and re-deployed on Save.

NOTE: Community Edition doesn't support JEE.
First, you will need to install a local Tomcat server. It sounds like you may have already done this.
Next, on the toolbar at the top of IntelliJ, click the down arrow just to the left of the Run and Debug icons. There will be an option to Edit Configurations. In the resulting popup, click the Add icon, then click Tomcat and Local.
From that dialog, you will need to click the Configure... button next to Application Server to tell IntelliJ where Tomcat is installed.
Here is step-by-step instruction for Tomcat configuration in IntellijIdea:
1) Create IntellijIdea project via WebApplication template. Idea should be Ultimate version, not Community edition
2) Go to Run-Edit configutaion and set up Tomcat location folder, so Idea will know about your tomcat server
3) Go to Deployment tab and select Artifact. Apply
4) In src folder put your servlet (you can try my example for testing purpose)
5) Go to web.xml file and link your's servlet like this
6) In web folder put your's .jsp files (for example hey.jsp)
7) Now you can start you app via IntellijIdea. Run(Shift+F10) and enjoy your app in browser:
- to jsp files: http://localhost:8080/hey.jsp (or index.jsp by default)
- to servlets via virtual link you set in web.xml : http://localhost:8080/st
Which version of IntelliJ are you using? Note that since last year, IntelliJ exists in two versions:
Ultimate Edition, which is the complete IDE
Community Edition, which is free but does not support JavaEE developments.
(see differences here)
In case you are using the Community Edition, you will not be able to manage a Tomcat installation.
In case you are using the Ultimate Edition, you can have a look at:

You can also debug tomcat using the community edition (Unlike what is said above).
Start tomcat in debug mode, for example like this:
.\catalina.bat jpda run
In intellij:
Run > Edit Configurations > +
Select "Remote"
Name the connection: "somename"
Set "Port:" 8000 (default 5005)
Select Run > Debug "somename"
Please verify that the required plug-ins are enabled in Settings | Plugins, most likely you've disabled several of them, that's why you don't see all the facet options.

The problem I had was due to the fact that I was unknowingly editing the default values and not a new Tomcat instance at all. Click the plus sign at the top left part of the Run window and select Tomcat | Local from there.
In Netbeans you can right click on the project and run it, but in IntelliJ IDEA you have to select the index.jsp file or the welcome file to run the project.
this is because Netbeans generate the following tag in web.xml and IntelliJ do not.

I have Eclipse Kepler SR2 (J2EE), Tomcat 7 64-bit, Java 7.
The project does not appear to be a web project, so I add "Dynamic Web Module" version 3.0 and "Java" (version 1.7) to it. I right click, maven install, which appears to run fine. When I try to actually deploy it on tomcat, it does not give any errors in the console, but when the browser window pops up it shows a 404

That said, how do I get this "basic" example running in eclipse? Anyone able to get this working successfully? It feels like it should be more trivial than the 5 hours I've spent on trying to get this sample code working to no avail.

Still continues to fail despite using Tomcat 7.0 server.
Download the sample, extract contents to workspace directory.
"Import Existing Project" in Eclipse
Since there is no "Run On Server" option, I right click on the imported project directory and hit "Properties".
I go to "Project Facets" and check 2 things: "Dynamic Web Module" (3.0) and "Java" (1.7) and hit apply then "Ok".
I right click on the project Spring4MVCHelloWorld and click "Maven"->"Update Project". Then I click "Run On Server".
There are no errors in the console, but the web browser that pops up in eclipse shows a HTTP STATUS 404.
I tried going to:
http://localhost:8080/Spring4MVCHelloWord/hello
and the same:
HTTP Status 404 - /Spring4MVCHelloWorld/hello
shows up, but the tomcat shows up as:
Apache Tomcat/7.0.53
Note that this is the 64-bit version. What steps am I missing? How do I get around this silent failing?
Apart from what Dimitri stated, your log seems to indicate that you are using
Apache Tomcat/6.0.39
That version of Tomcat does not support ServletContainerInitializer which your Spring web application depends on for configuration. Upgrade to a Tomcat version 7+.
It seems like the Maven update doesn't work for you (or for me).
First, go into Properties -> Deployment Assembly. You need to get rid of Web Content if it's there and add src/main/webapp (which is a maven convention). You also need to add the Maven Dependencies as shown below.
Finally, and this might not be necessary, delete the web.xml provided to you and re-create it by selecting and right clicking Deployment Descriptor in the Project Explorer and clicking Generate Deployment Descriptor Stub.
Also, make sure your Java Build Path in the Properties has a Java 7+ version of the JRE.
As far as I can see your controller only maps to /hello, which means your URL should be:
http://localhost:8080/Spring4MVCHelloWorld/hello
Another thing that might be interesting to you is that if your having problems with certain project facets (like Dynamic Web Module) not being recognized, you can usually fix them by righ clicking your project, opening the Maven menu and choosing Update Project.
I'm trying to deploy on Glassfish with another configuration that the one that start Glassfish initially.
But, I got an error that the port 4848 is already used. Obviously, it's the port of the Glassfish admin.
How can I deploy with another configuration to that already started server without getting that error? (like in Netbeans)

Select project --> Click on Run in menu --> Edit configurations
You could use two configurations to do this. The first would deploy your entire app and the second would deploy a part of it. In the second configuration, along with the deployment details you will want to specify the "On 'Update' action" appropriately.
In your configuration you can specify what you want deployed for that configuration. In "Glassfish Server Run/Debug Configuration" click on the Deployment tab and you can choose the specific artifacts in there.
Then once you have the part of the application you want to deploy specified in that tab, you can tell IDEA whether or not it should simply redeploy, or restart the server, or simply update classes and resources, or simply update resources when you run the configuration. This setting can be found in the "Server" tab in the "On 'Update' action" combo box.
Setup
I'm using Netbeans 7.4 on Mac OSX Mavericks and Glassfish 4.0 (build 89) on my dedicated server and JDK 1.7. To use the server locally I setup and ssh-tunnel. The following way:
ssh -L 4848:127.0.0.1:4848 -p 6122 glassfish#XXXXXXXXXX
This is working perfectly fine, I can access the server via localhost without any problems. To use this server I added a server in Netbeans, see prinscreen:

Now I'd like to deploy the project to the server (Right-Click Project -> Deploy) but I get following Error:

Now I'd checked the line where the Error-Show's up, which is following (1049-1051). For me everything looks normal:

Allright, I didn't found a solution for solving the problem above, but following way worked at least to deploy the app manually.
Netbeans -> Right-Click on Project -> Clean/Build (now check your outputlog where it save's the project.
Now go to that path, you'll shoud find a .war file
Log into your glassfish-server -> Click Application's -> Click deploy -> upload the .war file -> Click again deploy
Now glassfish deploys the project for you. :)

I could fix the problem, following was wrong. In netbeans I configured that the Target should be domain1, if you do this, it won't work. Let the target be empty, and everything works fine.

If NetBeans can't talk to the server when you add it to the list then it silently fails. The server appears in the list but you can't click on the + and expand it out to see what it contains.
Check in your server list that NetBeans can actually see the server. Also keep in mind that NetBeans needs access to the admin port (usually 4848) not the normal web one, although it looks like your tunnel is correct for that.
You also need to turn on remote administration and set up the username and password etc. Try pointing a web browser to your localhost 6122 and check you can log in to the admin panel using the same username and password that netbeans is using.

I currently have a sprimgmvc app that uses maven. I am currently using mvn:package to build war and deploy it to tomcat to develop and this is getting very cumbersome. I dont have the eclipse configured to automatically build and deploy to tomcat for that matter?
Can anyone please provide me steps that I need to take so that if I make any changes in my project I can just hit save and run and it will deploy to the tomcat OR a way in which I dont use tomcat but use maybe jetty or something else to build and test my app?

download STS > Import your project as maven project to the new workspace > mvn install (only once to download all your dependencies) > run AS > Server > baam!
For any other eclipse version pretty much the same but you need to open the server window and configure tomcat , basically open the server tab > new > select your tomcat installation path and then .. just run it on the server. You can even modify code while running your app.
I was able to make this work using some helpers from: Running Tomcat from within Eclipse always gives me 404 (but index.html works) and following these steps:
I suspected that there was something wrong with the initial set up in eclipse. So, I closed the project in eclipse using: Right Click project > Close Project
Then I deleted any files related with eclipse from the folder. These were: .settings, .project, .classpath
I then Re-imported the project as maven project.
I used Window > Show view > server view
In the server view I created a new server and pointed it to XAMPP > tomcat since I already had tomcat.
Right click on the project > Run As > Run on Server.
It should run properly at that point in the browser as well
Make sure to check Right Click Project > Properties > Deployment Assembly - There should be Maven Dependencies added to the project and the deploy path for that should be "WEB-INF/lib"
here is a my way to debug and run maven web project with eclipse. though code is not hot deployed but it works fine for me.
Steps are as follows
open command prompt and go to your project directory. Lets say it is /opt/myhome/myproj
run mvnDebug tomcat:run command, make sure you have mvn and mvnDebug at system path
A message will be appeared like one mentioned in screenshot attached below, this states that maven is waiting for remote connection.
Now we need to Remotely connect to maven from IDE. To do that
Right click on the project and select "DebugAs" ---> "Debug configuration"
Add an new entry under Remote Java application with highlighted details and then select Debug button.
switch back to your terminal and you will get a screen like one displayed below
your web app is ready to debug, put a break point and call it and your IDE will switch to debug perspective
We are done with it. now if you make some changes in your code. you need to stop it from terminal with Ctrl-C and re-execute mvnDebug tomcat:run and then Remote Debug from IDE.
As i mentioned in starting code is not hot deployable as in local debug mode but it is pretty much better approach than rebuilding war and deploy it to external tomcat instance.
