Why can my file not be read in java? - java

I am trying to simply read a text document in java. The file is being found by my program; I can see that it is able to determine the correct absolute path through various tests, but the problem seems to be that my program doesn't have permission to view the file?

The boolean expression in each if statement evaluates to false, and I cannot understand why, or how to change it. I run into a FileNotFoundException where I attempt to create a new FileInputStream, which I read is due the the file being unreadable.
EDIT: Now I have changed the second paramater for the setReadable method call to true, and that part works (it prints "Can now be read"); so it seems that the file is being found and set as readable but still the second if statement fails and the program cannot access the text document.

This should be:
if(names.setReadable(true, true))
The second argument should be true so that the owner can access the file.
If you set it to false the program won't be able to read the file.

There are a number situation where a FileNotFoundException may be thrown at runtime.
The named file does not exist. This could be for a number of reasons including:
The pathname is simply wrong
The pathname looks correct but is actually wrong because it contains non-printing characters (or homoglyphs) that you did not notice
The pathname is relative, and it doesn't resolve correctly relative to the actual current directory of the running application. This typically happens because the application's current directory is not what you are expecting or assuming.
The path to the file is is broken; e.g. a directory name of the path is incorrect, a symbolic link on the path is broken, or there is a permission problem with one of the path components.
The named file is actually a directory.
The named file cannot be opened for reading for some reason.
The good news that, the problem will inevitably be one of the above. It is just a matter of working out which. Here are some things that you can try:
Calling file.exists() will tell you if any file system object exists with the given name / pathname.
Calling file.isDirectory() will test if it is a directory.
Calling file.canRead() will test if it is a readable file.
This line will tell you what the current directory is:
System.out.println(new File(".").getAbsolutePath());
This line will print out the pathname in a way that makes it easier to spot things like unexpected leading or trailing whitespace:
System.out.println("The path is '" + path + "'");
Look for unexpected spaces, line breaks, etc in the output.
It turns out that your example code has a compilation error.
I ran your code without taking care of the complaint from Netbeans, only to get the following exception message:

The code itself is working correctly. The problem is, that the program working path is pointing to other place than you think.
Use this line and see where the path is:

The problem was that Windows 7 was configured to "Hide file extensions for known file types." This means that if file appears to have the name "data.txt" its actual filename is "data.txt.txt".

The cause of the problem was that the path contained invisible \r\n characters at the end.
The fix in my case was:
File file = new File(path.trim());
To generalize a bit, the invisible / non-printing characters could have include space or tab characters, and possibly others, and they could have appeared at the beginning of the path, at the end, or embedded in the path. Trim will work in some cases but not all. There are a couple of things that you can help to spot this kind of problem:
Output the pathname with quote characters around it; e.g.
System.out.println("Check me! '" + path + "'");
and carefully check the output for spaces and line breaks where they shouldn't be.
Use a Java debugger to carefully examine the pathname string, character by character, looking for characters that shouldn't be there. (Also check for homoglyph characters!)
An easy fix, which worked for me, is moving my files out of src and into the main folder of the project. It's not the best solution, but depending on the magnitude of the project and your time, it might be just perfect.
Reading and writing from and to a file can be blocked by your OS depending on the file's permission attributes.
If you are trying to read from the file, then I recommend using File's setReadable method to set it to true, or, this code for instance:

Apart from all the other answers mentioned here, you can do one thing which worked for me.
If you are reading the path through Scanner or through command line args, instead of copy pasting the path directly from Windows Explorer just manually type in the path.

I had this same error and solved it simply by adding the src directory that is found in Java project structure.
String path = System.getProperty("user.dir") + "\\src\\package_name\\file_name";
File file = new File(path);
Scanner scanner = new Scanner(file);
Notice that System.getProperty("user.dir") and new File(".").getAbsolutePath() return your project root directory path, so you have to add the path to your subdirectories and packages
You'd obviously figure it out after a while but just posting this so that it might help someone. This could also happen when your file path contains any whitespace appended or prepended to it.
Use single forward slash and always type the path manually. For example:
FileInputStream fi= new FileInputStream("D:/excelfiles/myxcel.xlsx");
What worked for me was catching the exception. Without it the compiler complains even if the file exists.

PrintWriter not outputing to file

Whenever the next segment of code is run, I get the new csv file created, but I don't get anything written to it:

I do a fout.close() in a finally statement, but that still doesn't help get any output to the file. Any ideas here?
Either:
You are looking in the wrong place, i.e. not the current working directory, or
You don't have write access to the current working directory.
If you had used a FileWriter and not got an IOException, that would rule out (2).
I've seen about a million answers and comments here this week claiming that the current working directory equals the location of the JAR file, but it doesn't.
You could open a FileWriter
fout = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter("EEGLogger.csv"));
...
fout.flush();
fout.close()
I believe the PrintWriter is intended for formatting and character encoding. api docs states Prints formatted representations of objects to a text-output stream and as well Methods in this class never throw I/O exceptions.
Using the FileWriter as parameter would force you to handle any IOException that may happen so if the file is not created or not writable, you will immediately get this information.
Another situation can happen if the file is created and you are just looking for the file at incorrect location. I'd suggest to create a File object too, to see where the file really resides (what's your real working directory)
File f = new File("EEGLogger.csv");

Clear contents of a file in Java using RandomAccessFile

I am trying to clear the contents of a file I made in java. The file is created by a PrintWriter call. I read here that one can use RandomAccessFile to do so, and read somewhere else that this is in fact better to use than calling a new PrintWriter and immediately closing it to overwrite the file with a blank one.
However, using the RandomAccessFile is not working, and I don't understand why. Here is the basic outline of my code.

Running the equivalent of the above code is giving my temp file the contents:(Lets imagine that the program looped twice before clearCondition was met)

NOTE: writer needs to be able to write "Example Text" to the file again after the file is cleared. The clearCondition does not mean that the while loop gets broken.
You want to either flush the PrintWriter to make sure the changes in its buffer are written out first, before you set the RandomAccessFile's length to 0, or close it and re-open a new PrintWriter to write the last line (Text to be written...). Preferably the former:
if (clearCondition) {
writer.flush();
new RandomAccessFile("temp","rw").setLength(0);
You'll be lucky if opening the file twice at the same time works. It isn't specified to work by Java.
What you should do is close the PrintWriter and open a new one without the 'append' parameter, or with 'append' set to 'false'.

You can use the following code to append to a file which already exists -

If the second argument in FileWriter's constructor is true, then bytes will be written to the end of the file rather than the beginning.

No you don't have to do that: see other answers for the solution.
Actually, it would be a bad idea to do something like that, as it creates a potential race condition that might make your application occasionally die ... or clobber a file!
Suppose that the operating system preempted your application immediately after the file.exists() call returns false, and gave control to some other application. Then suppose that the other application created the file. Now when your application is resumed by the operating system it will not realise that the file has been created, and try to create it itself. Depending on the circumstance, this might clobber the existing file, or it might cause this application to throw an IOException due to a file locking conflict.
Incidentally, new File() does not actually cause any file system objects to be created. That only happens when you 'open' the file; e.g. by calling new FileOutputStream(file);
If you wish to append to the file if it already exists there's no need to check for its existence at all using exists(). You merely need to create a FileWriter with the append flag set to true; e.g.
PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("foo.txt", true)));
pw.println("Hello, World");
pw.close();
This will create the file if it does not exist or else append to the end of it otherwise.
