During my work in eclipse kepler it crashed.
Now I can't open eclipse on the requested workspace (on other work space it open fine).
After choosing a workspace I get a pop up message:
An error has occurred. see the log file. ...WORKSPACE/.metadata/.log

I tried to restart my computer twice (verify no file is locked).
I tried to remove the server folder.
My latest work isn't committed to SVN.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Found a solution!
I deleted the file: /.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap and it solved the problem.
Thanks!
It works after deleting .snap from .metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.resources
I think this an error you can't get on it.
Try to move all the work in your workspace in a new workspace because it has to do with the bundle, that is the reason it as crashed previously and it won't work on the same workspace
Delete your workspace. Then open eclipse.
Take Backup before delete.
I'm running Red Hat Jboss Developer Studio 10.0 (a bundled version of Eclipse), and had this same problem.
Deleting the *.snap file in C:\workspace.metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.core.resources worked for me. (This is after an unexpected restart that wouldn't allow me to acknowledge the last Eclipse shut-down pop-up.)
As to why deleting it works, according to What are *.snap files in eclipse?:
"*.snap files represent the changes in workspace state of the IDE during the runtime. This is mostly for eclipse crash recovery plan. When a crash happens these files are used to recover the state of the eclipse workspace."
Apparently, if the crash is severe enough, the snap(shot?) file gets corrupted, and cannot get back to a last good state. But getting Eclipse up at all is better than nothing. You many need to re-import your projects (I had to import my latest one).
For some reason I'm no longer able to fire up eclipse as every time I open it, i get an error that states : An error has occures, see log file x.log
I looked around online for this issue and one of the things that seamed to have solved it is by deleting all .snap files from .metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.core.resources folder but I couldn't find any .snap files (PS: this is now a clean install of eclipse)
I also tried re-installating JDK and JRE
java version "1.8.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_11-b12)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.11-b03, mixed mode)
I also tried running eclipse with cmd with eclipse - clean command but same error pops up.
I'm very new at this..can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong :)

Try to delete the .metadata file and again restart the eclips with the workspace. Due to some changes the metadata may be holding the older information related to eclipse and workspace.
After I installed JDK 1.9, I got this error and changed it to 1.8.
you should change jdk for 1.8,it will be ok.
A few days ago we decided to start using Guava in our Eclipse RCP application. I downloaded guava-14.0.1.jar from http://central.maven.org/maven2/com/google/guava/guava/14.0.1/.
After I had started eclipse.exe the application crashed. The .metadata/.log file contained the following errors:

There is no error if the application is running as an administrator.
The application is 64 bit, so this is not an UAC virtualization issue. But it looks like the problem is somehow connected with permissions.
guava-14.0.1.jar seems to be a valid OSGi bundle: https://code.google.com/p/guava-libraries/issues/detail?id=688 (At least I found all necessary headers in MANIFEST.MF)
Any suggestions?
I fixed my problem by wiping out C:\Users\<user_name>\.eclipse folder. It looks like the problem was somehow connected with OSGi (Equinox) temporary directories.
Double check if you have included the bundle in the feature that you are using in the product configuration of your RCP.
Double check if you are using the right symbolic name and if you are requiring the right version.
I had a problem like yours because the guava jar was not being copied properly to the target platform at build time.
In my case I had to add the following in the feature.xml to ensure the version 0.14.1 was being copied since Eclipse Xtext and other components uses an older one:
<requires>
<import plugin="com.google.guava" version="0.14.1"/>
....
</requires>
<plugin
id="com.google.guava"
download-size="0"
install-size="0"
version="0.0.0"
unpack="false"/>
Based on your last comment, I'd think this isn't Java or OSGi related, but probably just a filesystem permission issue.
You may want to:
check that particular folder and its subfolders and files for unusal permission requirements (right-click, properties, security tab),
delete the entire folder, recreate it, and try again to check for a different outcome.
I have a windows 32 bit computer and just downloaded The Eclipse 3.2 SDK and can not get it to start. It immedietly throws the following error to a log file.
I have tried starting it with a java 1.5 VM and still haven't had any luck. Any Ideas? Thanks

UPDATE
After reinstalling the JVM and using the -vm path parameter I still get the following error
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Unable to acquire application service. Ensure that the org.eclipse.core.runtime bundle is resolved and started (see config.ini).
at org.eclipse.core.runtime.internal.adaptor.EclipseAppLauncher.start(EclipseAppLauncher.java:65)
at org.eclipse.core.runtime.adaptor.EclipseStarter.run(EclipseStarter.java:400)
at org.eclipse.core.runtime.adaptor.EclipseStarter.run(EclipseStarter.java:177)
The problem can be solved as follows.
Edit the eclipse.ini file located in your Eclipse install directory and insert -clean as the first line.
This will force Eclipse to run. You can then remove the -clean line from the .ini file
Although this is an old thread, I'll contribute in case someone Googles this issue. I started having this problem after Java 7 Update 11 was installed. I uninstalled update 11 and now eclipse works just fine. I run eclipse from \Program Files\eclipse.
I had the same problem on Ubuntu and solved by running:
eclipse -clean
You need to set the version of the JDK you are using
Don't know it it will work...
We use it for a 3rd party app which is eclipse based (very old) but it has a launhcer.ini where you specify the vm args etc.
I just added the following to be the first line.
-vm
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_22\bin\javaw.exe
The only thing that i can think of doing is re-installing java from here, and re-downloading and installing eclipse (the newest version) from here. Let me know if it works!
I got this error when I opened the Debug tab inside the Preferences in Eclipse, Does anyone know what happened?
ps:. This happened after I did the Update.

I had this problem on Ubuntu 12.04 after OpenJDK was updated.
Found solution here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/186986/eclipse-has-multiple-issues-after-jre-6-openjdk-upgrade
Just run:
sudo apt-get --reinstall install tzdata-java
same problem happened in my windows 8..
solution :
just restart the IDE the problem will get resolved .
Looks like a similar issue was discussed here: http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/mv/msg/156204/530834/
Seems like deleting the file ".metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap" could fix the problem.
I ran into the same problem on Mac OS X 10.5.8 running on an old PPC "cheese grater" after upgrading Eclipse 4.3 / Kepler to run on OpenJDK 1.7. Hit it on the Installed JREs tab.
I found the answer in https://askubuntu.com/questions/186986/eclipse-has-multiple-issues-after-jre-6-openjdk-upgrade. Add the following to end of your eclipse.ini:
-Dcom.ibm.icu.util.TimeZone.DefaultTimeZoneType=ICU
I resolved this issue by changing permission recursively on the STS directory and then changing the eclipse default jre to point to my java installation.
On linux system, such problems happen, when eclipse has problem accessing JVM, i.e. no permission to access the jre/jdk dir. so fix file permission will help.
