Making RecyclerView clickable not working - java

I have been working on making my RecyclerView list clickable. I have not successfully retrieve any results from clicks yet. I have searched through stackoverflow and youtube, but not understanding what I am implementing wrong. My Adapter is
Food Adapter
ublic class FoodAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<FoodAdapter.FoodViewHolder> {
private Context mCtx;
private List<Food> foodList;
public FoodAdapter(Context mCtx, List<Food> foodList) {
this.mCtx = mCtx;
this.foodList = foodList;
}
#Override
public FoodViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(mCtx);
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.list_item, null);
FoodViewHolder foodView = new FoodViewHolder(view, mCtx, foodList);
return foodView;
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(FoodViewHolder holder, int position) {
Food food = foodList.get(position);
holder.txtFoodTitle.setText(food.getFoodTitle());
holder.txtFoodDesc.setText(food.getFoodDesc());
holder.txtFoodLoc.setText(food.getFoodLoc() + ", CA");
holder.txtFoodAuthor.setText(food.getFoodAuthor());
holder.imageView.setImageDrawable(mCtx.getResources().getDrawable(food.getImage(), null));
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return foodList.size();
}
class FoodViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder implements View.OnClickListener {
ImageView imageView;
TextView txtFoodTitle, txtFoodDesc, txtFoodLoc, txtFoodAuthor;
List<Food> foods;
Context ctx;
public FoodViewHolder(View itemView, Context ctx, List<Food> foods) {
super(itemView);
itemView.setOnClickListener(this);
this.ctx = ctx;
this.foods = foods;
imageView = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodImg);
txtFoodTitle = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodTitle);
txtFoodDesc = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodDesc);
txtFoodLoc = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodLoc);
txtFoodAuthor = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodAuthor);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
int position = getAdapterPosition();
//Food food = this.foods.get(position);
Log.i(TAG, "Clicked!");
}
}
}
FragmentList
public class FragmentList extends Fragment {
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// Inflate the layout for this fragment
View v = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_fragment_list, container, false);
RecyclerView recyclerView;
final FoodAdapter adapter;
final List<Food> foodList = new ArrayList<>();
recyclerView = v.findViewById(R.id.recyclerView);
recyclerView.setHasFixedSize(true);
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(getActivity()));
adapter = new FoodAdapter(getActivity(), foodList);
recyclerView.setAdapter(adapter);
String url = "url";
StringRequest sr = new StringRequest(Request.Method.POST, url, new Response.Listener<String>() {
#Override
public void onResponse(String response) {
Log.i(TAG, response);
try {
JSONArray foodResp = new JSONArray(response);
for (int i = 0; i < foodResp.length(); i++) {
JSONObject foodObj = foodResp.getJSONObject(i);
foodList.add(
new Food(
foodObj.getInt("u_id"),
R.drawable.ic_launcher_background,
foodObj.getString("mealTitle"),
foodObj.getString("mealDesc"),
foodObj.getString("cityName"),
foodObj.getString("userName")
));
}
if (adapter != null) {
adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
}
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.i(TAG, "Error: " + e.getMessage());
}
}
}, new Response.ErrorListener() {
#Override
public void onErrorResponse(VolleyError error) {
Log.i(TAG, "err: " + error.toString());
}
}){
#Override
protected Map<String, String> getParams() throws AuthFailureError {
Map<String, String> params = new HashMap<>();
params.put("data", "value");
return params;
}
};
Volley.newRequestQueue(getActivity()).add(sr);
return v;
}
One of the original videos I was watching showed it done with an ArrayList<>, but I already set up my RecyclerView with List. I do not imagine that that would matter. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try to set Click Listener in your FragmentList.java.
Food Adapter
public class FoodAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<FoodAdapter.FoodViewHolder> {
private Context mCtx;
private List<Food> foodList;
public FoodAdapter(Context mCtx, List<Food> foodList) {
this.mCtx = mCtx;
this.foodList = foodList;
}
public static class FoodViewHolder extends RecyclerView.FoodViewHolder {
ImageView imageView;
TextView txtFoodTitle, txtFoodDesc, txtFoodLoc, txtFoodAuthor;
//List<Food> foods;
//Context ctx;
public FoodViewHolder(View v) {
super(v);
imageView = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodImg);
txtFoodTitle = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodTitle);
txtFoodDesc = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodDesc);
txtFoodLoc = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodLoc);
txtFoodAuthor = itemView.findViewById(R.id.foodAuthor);
}
}
#Override
public FoodAdapter.FoodViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(mCtx);
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.list_item, parent, false);
return FoodViewHolder(view);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(FoodViewHolder holder, int position) {
Food food = foodList.get(position);
holder.txtFoodTitle.setText(food.getFoodTitle());
holder.txtFoodDesc.setText(food.getFoodDesc());
holder.txtFoodLoc.setText(food.getFoodLoc() + ", CA");
holder.txtFoodAuthor.setText(food.getFoodAuthor());
holder.imageView.setImageDrawable(mCtx.getResources().getDrawable(food.getImage(), null));
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return foodList.size();
}
}
FragmentList
public class FragmentList extends Fragment {
RecyclerView recyclerView;
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// Inflate the layout for this fragment
View v = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_fragment_list, container, false);
final FoodAdapter adapter;
final List<Food> foodList = new ArrayList<>();
recyclerView = v.findViewById(R.id.recyclerView);
recyclerView.setHasFixedSize(true);
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(getActivity()));
adapter = new FoodAdapter(getActivity(), foodList);
recyclerView.setAdapter(adapter);
String url = "url";
StringRequest sr = new StringRequest(Request.Method.POST, url, new Response.Listener<String>() {
#Override
public void onResponse(String response) {
Log.i(TAG, response);
try {
JSONArray foodResp = new JSONArray(response);
for (int i = 0; i < foodResp.length(); i++) {
JSONObject foodObj = foodResp.getJSONObject(i);
foodList.add(
new Food(
foodObj.getInt("u_id"),
R.drawable.ic_launcher_background,
foodObj.getString("mealTitle"),
foodObj.getString("mealDesc"),
foodObj.getString("cityName"),
foodObj.getString("userName")
));
}
if (adapter != null) {
adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
}
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.i(TAG, "Error: " + e.getMessage());
}
}
}, new Response.ErrorListener() {
#Override
public void onErrorResponse(VolleyError error) {
Log.i(TAG, "err: " + error.toString());
}
}){
#Override
protected Map<String, String> getParams() throws AuthFailureError {
Map<String, String> params = new HashMap<>();
params.put("data", "value");
return params;
}
};
Volley.newRequestQueue(getActivity()).add(sr);
return v;
}
#Override
public void onViewCreated(final View view, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onViewCreated(view, savedInstanceState);
/* --- Adding the Listener here --- */
recyclerView.addOnItemTouchListener(new RecyclerItemClickListener(getContext(), new RecyclerItemClickListener.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(View itemView, int position) {
//Food food = this.foods.get(position);
Log.i(TAG, "Clicked!");
}
}));
}
}
And this will be your RecyclerItemClickListener.java file:
public class RecyclerItemClickListener implements RecyclerView.OnItemTouchListener {
private OnItemClickListener mListener;
GestureDetector mGestureDetector;
public interface OnItemClickListener{
void onItemClick(View view, int position);
}
public RecyclerItemClickListener(Context context, OnItemClickListener listener) {
mListener = listener;
mGestureDetector = new GestureDetector(context, new GestureDetector.SimpleOnGestureListener() {
#Override public boolean onSingleTapUp(MotionEvent e) {
return true;
}
});
}
#Override
public boolean onInterceptTouchEvent(RecyclerView rv, MotionEvent e) {
View childView = rv.findChildViewUnder(e.getX(),e.getY());
if(childView != null && mListener != null && mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(e)){
mListener.onItemClick(childView, rv.getChildAdapterPosition(childView));
return true;
}
return false;
}
#Override
public void onTouchEvent(RecyclerView rv, MotionEvent e) {
}
#Override
public void onRequestDisallowInterceptTouchEvent(boolean disallowIntercept) {
}
}
Hope it will help :)

You need to set the click listener on the specific element.
For example if you want to do something when you click on the image then :
You need to call holder.imageview.setOnClickListener(this);
Try this !!
If you want to set the click listener to the entire row, then you might want to set the click listener on the root element of your row item.

handling clicks for the entire item "the viewholder"
1. create custom listener
public class RecyclerClickListener implements RecyclerView.OnItemTouchListener {
private OnItemClickListener mListener;
public interface OnItemClickListener {
public void onItemClick(View view, int position);
public void onLongItemClick(View view, int position);
}
GestureDetector mGestureDetector;
public RecyclerClickListener(Context context, final RecyclerView recyclerView, OnItemClickListener listener) {
mListener = listener;
mGestureDetector = new GestureDetector(context, new GestureDetector.SimpleOnGestureListener() {
#Override
public boolean onSingleTapUp(MotionEvent e) {
return true;
}
#Override
public void onLongPress(MotionEvent e) {
View child = recyclerView.findChildViewUnder(e.getX(), e.getY());
if (child != null && mListener != null) {
mListener.onLongItemClick(child, recyclerView.getChildAdapterPosition(child));
}
}
});
}
#Override
public boolean onInterceptTouchEvent(RecyclerView view, MotionEvent e) {
View childView = view.findChildViewUnder(e.getX(), e.getY());
if (childView != null && mListener != null && mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(e)) {
mListener.onItemClick(childView, view.getChildAdapterPosition(childView));
return true;
}
return false;
}
#Override
public void onTouchEvent(RecyclerView view, MotionEvent motionEvent) {
}
#Override
public void onRequestDisallowInterceptTouchEvent(boolean disallowIntercept) {
}
}
2. listen for clicks using our listener inside your
recyclerView.addOnItemTouchListener(
//use getActivity() if you are using fragment instead of MyActivity.this
new RecyclerClickListener(MyActivity.this, recyclerView, new RecyclerClickListener.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(View view, int position) {
Food food= foodList.get(position);
//do whatever
}
#Override
public void onLongItemClick(View view, int position) {
// to be implement add to favourite
}
})
);
if you are listening to a specifc item inside the view holder.
1.create an inner interface inside your adapter and create an instance of it.
private OnItemClickListener mListener;
public interface OnItemClickListener {
void onItemClick(Food item);
}
//and also the constructor
public MyAdapter(List<Food> foodList,Context ctx,OnItemClickListener
listener){
// ......
this.mListener=mListener;
}
2.inside your viewholder class create setListener() method
public void SetListener(final Food item, final OnItemClickListener listener) {
mButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override public void onClick(View v) {
listener.onItemClick(item);
}
});
}
3.inside you onBindView
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(FoodViewHolder holder, int position) {
//...
viewHolder.setListener(foodList.get(position), mListener);
}
4.inside your activity or fragment
MyAdapter adapter=new MyAdapter(foodList,getActivity(),new MyAdapter.OnItemClickListener(){
#Override
public void onItemClick(Food item){
}
});

How to flow Data from One RecyclerView to Another RecyclerView when an item in first RecyclerView is clicked?

Hi, I faced an issue here.. I was creating a chatbot in which user can type a text to send it and also can select a text out of the recommended texts
so I created two RecycleViews
My goal is - when the user selects one of the recommended text, then that text should appear in the Chatting RecycleView
here is my main Activity Class
public class Charts extends AppCompatActivity {
private static final String USER_KEY = "user";
private static final String BOT_KEY = "bot";
RecyclerView chart_recycle,auto_texts;
EditText message_text;
ImageView send_btn,mic_button;
ImageView setting_button;
ChartsAdapter chartsAdapter;
RecyclerView.LayoutManager linearLayout;
ArrayList<ChartModeClass> modeClassesArrayList = new ArrayList<>();
AutoAdapter autoAdapter;
RecyclerView.LayoutManager horizontal;
List<Texts> list = new ArrayList();
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_chatting_hole);
message_text = findViewById(R.id.message_text);
send_btn = findViewById(R.id.send_btn);
mic_button = findViewById(R.id.mic_btn);
setting_button = findViewById(R.id.setting_button);
chart_recycle = findViewById(R.id.chart_recycle);
chart_recycle.setHasFixedSize(true);
auto_texts = findViewById(R.id.auto_texts);
auto_texts.setHasFixedSize(true);
linearLayout = new LinearLayoutManager(getApplicationContext(), RecyclerView.VERTICAL, false);
chart_recycle.setLayoutManager(linearLayout);
//Auto text
horizontal = new LinearLayoutManager(getApplicationContext(),RecyclerView.HORIZONTAL, false);
auto_texts.setLayoutManager(horizontal);
chartsAdapter = new ChartsAdapter(modeClassesArrayList, Charts.this);
chart_recycle.setAdapter(chartsAdapter);
//Auto texts
autoAdapter = new AutoAdapter(getApplicationContext(),list);
auto_texts.setAdapter(autoAdapter);
addInputs();
BottomSheetDialog bottomSheetDialog = new BottomSheetDialog(Charts.this);
mic_button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {

list.addAll(Arrays.asList(new Texts[]{text1,text2,text3,text4,text5}));
}
}
here is my Adapter class class codes
public class AutoAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<AutoAdapter.ViewHolderClass> {
Context context;
List<Texts> list;
public AutoAdapter(Context context, List<Texts> list) {
this.context = context;
this.list = list;
}
#NonNull
#Override
public ViewHolderClass onCreateViewHolder(#NonNull ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View view = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.text_list,parent,false);
ViewHolderClass viewHolderClass = new ViewHolderClass(view);
return viewHolderClass;
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(#NonNull ViewHolderClass holder, #SuppressLint("RecyclerView") int position) {
holder.input_text.setText(list.get(position).getText());
holder.input_text.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
// my stack
}
});
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return list.size();
}
public class ViewHolderClass extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder {
TextView input_text;
public ViewHolderClass(#NonNull View itemView) {
super(itemView);
input_text = itemView.findViewById(R.id.input_text);
}
}
}
You can add a list of your recommendations in another RecyclerView
Then in the ViewHolder of each item of the RecyclerView add Callback to listen on click events when a user clicks one of the item like the following
public class ViewHolderClass extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder {
private TextView input_text;
private final Callback callback; // custom callback
public ViewHolderClass(#NonNull View itemView, Callback callback) {
super(itemView);
this.callback = callback;
input_text = itemView.findViewById(R.id.input_text);
// now add onClickListener of the itemView to fire custom callback
itemView.setOnClickListener(view -> {
this.callback.onItemClick(getAdapterPosition());
});
}
// this is my custom callback for return click event
public interface Callback {
void onItemClick(int position);
}
}
Now inside your adapter add the callback from viewholder
public class AutoAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<AutoAdapter.ViewHolderClass> {
private Context context;
private List<Texts> list;
private AutoAdapterCallback callback;
public AutoAdapter(Context context, List<Texts> list) {
this.context = context;
this.list = list;
}
public setCallback(AutoAdapterCallback callback) {
this.callback = callback;
}
#NonNull
#Override
public ViewHolderClass onCreateViewHolder(#NonNull ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View view = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.text_list,parent,false);
ViewHolderClass viewHolderClass = new ViewHolderClass(view, new ViewHolderClass.Callback() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(int position) {
// forward callback to adapter callback
if (callback != null) {
// get actual item from its position
final Texts texts = getItemByPosition(position);
// send to adapter callback
callback.onItemClick(texts);
}
});
return viewHolderClass;
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(#NonNull ViewHolderClass holder, #SuppressLint("RecyclerView") int position) {
holder.input_text.setText(list.get(position).getText());
// I haven't used this inteady I added callback on viewholder side
// holder.input_text.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
// #Override
// public void onClick(View view) {
// // my stack
// }
// });
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return list.size();
}
// return Texts object by given position
public Texts getItemByPosition(int position) {
return this.list.get(position);
}
// add adapter callback to be called by viewholder
public interface AdapterCallback {
void onItemClick(Texts texts);
}
}
After that, now on your Activity you can easily listen on any item when a user clicks and get its corresponding Texts object from list as following:
//code ...
// here
//Auto texts
autoAdapter = new AutoAdapter(getApplicationContext(),list);
//set callback to listen for click events
autoAdapter.setCallback(new AutoAdapter.AutoAdapterCallback() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(Texts texts) {
// you can get your clicked item here
// now you can put texts object to another RecyclerView :)
}
});
auto_texts.setAdapter(autoAdapter);
//code ...

get context after returning from adapter to fragment

I am using contextual action bar in my fragment("UnitsFragment.java") to delete and edit items of recyclerview. But when I come back from recyclerview adapter class("UnitsRv.java"). The context seems to be null. I tried returning context from adapter and it worked for function "prepareSelection". However for "onActionItemClicked" under ActionMode.callback, I need to get context so that I can use alertdialog for editing the items.
The "requireContext()" throws this error: Fragment UnitsFragment{e3a36c8 (b4957397-055a-4b1c-8af2-fee89a3e9b35)} not attached to a context.

This is my Adapter class.
UnitsRv.java
public class UnitsRv extends RecyclerView.Adapter<UnitsRv.ViewHolder> {

private static ArrayList<UnitsList> munitsLists = new ArrayList<>();

Context mcontext;
public UnitsRv(Context context,ArrayList<UnitsList> unitsLists) {
mcontext = context;
munitsLists = unitsLists;
}
class ViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder implements View.OnClickListener, View.OnLongClickListener {
TextView unit_name;
public ViewHolder(View v) {
super(v);
unit_name = v.findViewById(R.id.unit_name);
v.setOnLongClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
if (UnitsFragment.isInActionMode){
unitsFragment.prepareSelection(mcontext,getAdapterPosition());
notifyItemChanged(getAdapterPosition());
}
}
#Override
public boolean onLongClick(View view) {
Log.d(TAG, "onLongClick: " + getAdapterPosition());
unitsFragment.prepareSelection(view.getContext(),getAdapterPosition());
return true;
}
}
#NonNull
#Override
public ViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(#NonNull ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View itemView = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.units_item, parent, false);
return new ViewHolder(itemView);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(#NonNull final ViewHolder holder, final int position) {
holder.unit_name.setText(munitsLists.get(position).getUnit_name());
if (UnitsFragment.isInActionMode){
if (UnitsFragment.selectionList.contains(munitsLists.get(position))){
holder.itemView.setBackgroundResource(R.color.colorSelected);
}
}
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return munitsLists.size();
}
public static ArrayList<UnitsList> getDataSet() {
return munitsLists;
}
public void changeDataItem(int position, UnitsList unitsList) {
munitsLists.set(position, unitsList);
notifyDataSetChanged();
}
public void removeData(ArrayList<UnitsList> list) {
for (UnitsList unitsList : list) {
munitsLists.remove(unitsList);
}
notifyDataSetChanged();
}
}
First, you should not create instance of your UnitsFragment inside your adapter.
You can use EventBus to communicate between Activities, Fragments, Adapters, etc.
Or You can do your task using interface. like below.
Create an interface like this
public interface AdapterCallback {
void prepareSelection(Context context,int position);
}
In your UnitsFragment implement the above interface. like the following
public class UnitsFragment extends Fragment implements AdapterCallback{
// your other codes
#Nullable
#Override
public View onCreateView(#NonNull LayoutInflater inflater, #Nullable ViewGroup container, #Nullable Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_units, container, false);
setHasOptionsMenu(true);
// .... your other codes
Log.d(TAG, "onCreateView: " + getContext());
// modify below line like this
mAdapter = new UnitsRv(mcontext, unitsLists, this); // here you have to pass an extra parameter that will implement your callback method from adapter.
recyclerView.setAdapter(mAdapter);
return rootView;
}
// ... you other codes
#Override
public void prepareSelection(Context context,int position) {
if(actionMode == null) {
isInActionMode = true;
for (String string : list) {
unitsLists.add(new UnitsList(string));
}
mAdapter = new UnitsRv(context, unitsLists,this); // add this as parameter.
Log.d(TAG, "prepareSelection: " + mAdapter);
Log.d(TAG, "prepareSelection1: " + dcontext);
mcontext = (Activity)context;
actionMode = mcontext.startActionMode(actionModeCallback);
mAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
if (!selectionList.contains(unitsLists.get(position))) {
selectionList.add(unitsLists.get(position));
}
updateViewCounter();
}
}
// other codes
}
Now, inside your Adapter you need to add an extra argument in constructor of UnitsRv and call your interface method from adapter ussing mAdapterCallback.
public class UnitsRv extends RecyclerView.Adapter<UnitsRv.ViewHolder> {
private static final String TAG = "UnitsRv";
private static ArrayList<UnitsList> munitsLists = new ArrayList<>();
UnitsFragment unitsFragment = new UnitsFragment(); // remove this line
private AdapterCallback mAdapterCallback; // add this line
Context mcontext;
public UnitsRv(Context context,ArrayList<UnitsList> unitsLists, AdapterCallback callback) {
mcontext = context;
munitsLists = unitsLists;
this.mAdapterCallback = callback; // add this line
}
class ViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder implements View.OnClickListener, View.OnLongClickListener {
TextView unit_name;
public ViewHolder(View v) {
super(v);
unit_name = v.findViewById(R.id.unit_name);
v.setOnLongClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
if (UnitsFragment.isInActionMode){
mAdapterCallback.prepareSelection(mcontext,getAdapterPosition()); // modify this line
notifyItemChanged(getAdapterPosition());
}
}
#Override
public boolean onLongClick(View view) {
Log.d(TAG, "onLongClick: " + getAdapterPosition());
mAdapterCallback.prepareSelection(view.getContext(),getAdapterPosition()); // modify this line
return true;
}
}
// your other codes....
}
You should check for your fragment is attached or not with isAdded()
place if(!isAdded()) return in your onActionItemClicked. and replace requireContext() with getContext() because requireContext() always throws IllegalStateException if fragment is not attached.
override onAttach method to save context in your fragment.
#Override
public void onAttach(Context context) {
super.onAttach(context);
this.context= context;
}
Hope this helps.

Cannot cast onItem clicklistener inside Fragment Class form Adapter Class

I have an Fragment with recycleview where I populate it with json items from internet.
It load fine and Next step I want to is open new Activity when any row is clicked. It works in activity, thus I modified the same code for fragment but for fragment it throws exception in line
mExampleAdapter.setOnItemClickListener(getActivity());
with errror setOnItemClickListener of refrence adatper cannot be applied to Fragment activty and thus when I change line to
(ExampleAdapter.OnItemClickListener)
and when i build and run . Then app crashes with error that Mainactivity which holds framgnet cannot be cast in to .ExampleAdapter$OnItemClickListener
Here is my whole Fragment class

Thanks in advance.
replace getActivity with getContext when you work in fragment,
You can read more here
What is different between getContext and getActivity from Fragment in support library?
Your activity should implement ExampleAdapter.OnItemClickListener

How can I get a variable from RecyclerView Adapter passed to MainActivity?

I was just playing around with some code, learning new things, when I ran into this problem... I'm trying to pass a variable from my RecylcerViewAdapter to a method in MainActivity, but I just can't seem to accomplish it.
I tried a lot of different thing with interfaces and casting, but nothing did the trick. Since I'm fairly new to all of this, maybe I'm making a trivial mistake somewhere?
My Interface:
public interface AdapterCallback {
void onMethodCallback(int id);
}
This is my adapter class:
public class PostAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<PostAdapter.ViewHolder> {
private List<Post> postList;
private Context context;
private AdapterCallback listener;
public PostAdapter() {
}
public PostAdapter(List<Post> postList, Context context) {
this.postList = postList;
this.context = context;
}
public void setListener(AdapterCallback listener) {
this.listener = listener;
}
#NonNull
#Override
public ViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(#NonNull ViewGroup viewGroup, int i) {
View view = LayoutInflater.from(viewGroup.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.recycler_layout, viewGroup, false);
return new ViewHolder(view);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(#NonNull final ViewHolder viewHolder, final int position) {
viewHolder.tvTitle.setText(postList.get(position).getTitle());
viewHolder.tvBody.setText(new StringBuilder(postList.get(position).getBody().substring(0, 20)).append("..."));
viewHolder.tvId.setText(String.valueOf(postList.get(position).getUserId()));
viewHolder.parentLayout.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
int id = postList.get(position).getId();
if (listener != null) {
listener.onMethodCallback(id);
}
}
});
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return postList.size();
}
public class ViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder {
TextView tvTitle;
TextView tvBody;
TextView tvId;
LinearLayout parentLayout;
public ViewHolder(View itemView) {
super(itemView);
tvTitle = itemView.findViewById(R.id.tvTitle);
tvBody = itemView.findViewById(R.id.tvBody);
tvId = itemView.findViewById(R.id.tvId);
parentLayout = itemView.findViewById(R.id.parentLayout);
}
}
}
And my MainActivity:
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
public static final String TAG = "MainActivityLog";
private CompositeDisposable disposable = new CompositeDisposable();
#BindView(R.id.rvPosts)
RecyclerView rvPosts;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
ButterKnife.bind(this);
rvPosts.setHasFixedSize(true);
rvPosts.setLayoutManager(new LinearLayoutManager(this));
populateList();
logItems();
}
private void populateList() {
MainViewModel viewModel = ViewModelProviders.of(MainActivity.this).get(MainViewModel.class);
viewModel.makeQuery().observe(MainActivity.this, new Observer<List<Post>>() {
#Override
public void onChanged(#Nullable List<Post> posts) {
PostAdapter adapter = new PostAdapter(posts, getApplicationContext());
rvPosts.setAdapter(adapter);
}
});
}
public void logItems() {
PostAdapter adapter = new PostAdapter();
adapter.setListener(new AdapterCallback() {
#Override
public void onMethodCallback(int id) {
MainViewModel viewModel = ViewModelProviders.of(MainActivity.this).get(MainViewModel.class);
viewModel.makeSingleQuery(id).observe(MainActivity.this, new Observer<Post>() {
#Override
public void onChanged(#Nullable final Post post) {
Log.d(TAG, "onChanged: data response");
Log.d(TAG, "onChanged: " + post);
}
});
}
});
}
#Override
protected void onDestroy() {
super.onDestroy();
disposable.clear();
}
}
The populateList() method works just fine, but the logItems() method is the problem.
So when i click on a view in RecyclerView I expect the log to output the title, description and ID of the post that was clicked. nut nothing happens...
So, any help would be appreciated.
Make adapter global variable i.e. a field. Use the same object to set every properties.
private PostAdapter adapter;
Replace your logItems method with this:
public void logItems() {
adapter.setListener(new AdapterCallback() {
#Override
public void onMethodCallback(int id) {
MainViewModel viewModel = ViewModelProviders.of(MainActivity.this).get(MainViewModel.class);
viewModel.makeSingleQuery(id).observe(MainActivity.this, new Observer<Post>() {
#Override
public void onChanged(#Nullable final Post post) {
Log.d(TAG, "onChanged: data response");
Log.d(TAG, "onChanged: " + post);
}
});
}
});
}
And populateList with this:
private void populateList() {
MainViewModel viewModel = ViewModelProviders.of(MainActivity.this).get(MainViewModel.class);
viewModel.makeQuery().observe(MainActivity.this, new Observer<List<Post>>() {
#Override
public void onChanged(#Nullable List<Post> posts) {
adapter = new PostAdapter(posts, getApplicationContext());
rvPosts.setAdapter(adapter);
logItems();
}
});
}
And don't call logItems() from onCreate
This is how I implement with my ListAdapters:
public class FeedbackListAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<FeedbackListAdapter.ViewHolder> {
private final ArrayList<Feedback> feedbacks;
private View.OnClickListener onItemClickListener;
private View.OnLongClickListener onItemLongClickListener;
private final Context context;
public FeedbackListAdapter(ArrayList<Feedback> feedbacks, Context context) {
this.feedbacks = feedbacks;
this.context = context;
}
public void setItemClickListener(View.OnClickListener onItemClickListener) {
this.onItemClickListener = onItemClickListener;
}
public void setOnItemLongClickListener(View.OnLongClickListener onItemLongClickListener){
this.onItemLongClickListener = onItemLongClickListener;
}
public class ViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder{
final TextView feedback, created, updated;
final LinearLayout mainLayout;
ViewHolder(View iv) {
super(iv);
/*
* Associate layout elements to Java declarations
* */
mainLayout = iv.findViewById(R.id.main_layout);
feedback = iv.findViewById(R.id.feedback);
created = iv.findViewById(R.id.created_string);
updated = iv.findViewById(R.id.updated_string);
}
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return feedbacks.size();
}
#Override
#NonNull
public FeedbackListAdapter.ViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(#NonNull ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View view = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.fragment_feedback_table_row, parent, false);
return new FeedbackListAdapter.ViewHolder(view);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(final #NonNull FeedbackListAdapter.ViewHolder holder, final int position) {
/*
* Bind data to layout
* */
try{
Feedback feedback = feedbacks.get(position);
holder.feedback.setText(feedback.getContent());
holder.created.setText(feedback.getCreated());
holder.updated.setText(feedback.getUpdated());
holder.mainLayout.setOnClickListener(this.onItemClickListener);
holder.mainLayout.setOnLongClickListener(this.onItemLongClickListener);
holder.mainLayout.setTag(feedback.getDbID());
TypedValue outValue = new TypedValue();
context.getTheme().resolveAttribute(android.R.attr.selectableItemBackground, outValue, true);
holder.mainLayout.setBackgroundResource(outValue.resourceId);
}catch(IndexOutOfBoundsException e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
In onPopulateList you create an adaptor:
PostAdapter adapter = new PostAdapter(posts, getApplicationContext());
rvPosts.setAdapter(adapter);
However in public void logItems() { you used a different adapter
PostAdapter adapter = new PostAdapter();
adapter.setListener(new AdapterCallback() {
#Override
public void onMethodCallback(int id) {
...
}
});
Therefore the list is being populated with 1 adapter, but you are setting the listener on an unused second adapter.
The fix is to use the same adapter for both. If you make the adapater a field, and don't create a new one inside of logItems, but just set your listener it should work.
i.e.
// as a field in your class
private PostAdapter adapter;
then
// in `populateList()`
adapter = new PostAdapter(posts, getApplicationContext());
rvPosts.setAdapter(adapter);
and
// in `logItems()`
adapter.setListener(new AdapterCallback() {
#Override
public void onMethodCallback(int id) {
...
}
});
In Adapter
public class CustomerListAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<CustomerListAdapter.OrderItemViewHolder> {
private Context mCtx;
ProgressDialog progressDialog;
//we are storing all the products in a list
private List<CustomerModel> customeritemList;
public CustomerListAdapter(Context mCtx, List<CustomerModel> orderitemList) {

this.customeritemList = orderitemList;

Create the adapter like so:
public class CustomAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<Custom.ViewHolder> {
private List<SomeObject> mDataSet;
public OnItemClickListener mItemClickListener;
private Context mContext;
public CustomAdapter(Context context, List<SomeObject> myDataset, OnItemClickListener mItemClickListener) {
this.mDataSet = myDataset;
this.mItemClickListener = mItemClickListener;
this.mContext = context;
}
public void updateData(List<SomeObject> mDataSet) {
this.mDataSet = mDataSet;
notifyDataSetChanged();
}
public void removeItem(int position) {
mDataSet.remove(position);
notifyItemRemoved(position);
}
#Override
public ViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
// create a new view
View v = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.list_item, parent, false);
return new ViewHolder(v);
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(final ViewHolder holder, int position) {
// - get element from your dataset at this position
// - replace the contents of the view with that element
final SomeObject obj = mDataSet.get(position);
holder.name.setText(obj.getName());
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return mDataSet.size();
}
public class ViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder implements View.OnClickListener, View.OnLongClickListener {
TextView name;
public ViewHolder(View v) {
super(v);
name = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.naam);
v.setOnClickListener(this);
v.setOnLongClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// If not long clicked, pass last variable as false.
mItemClickListener.onItemClick(v, getLayoutPosition(), false, mDataSet);
}
#Override
public boolean onLongClick(View v) {
// If long clicked, passed last variable as true.
mItemClickListener.onItemClick(v, getLayoutPosition(), true, mDataSet);
return true;
}
}
public interface OnItemClickListener {
void onItemClick(View view, int position, boolean isLongClick, List<SomeObject> mFilteredList);
}
}
And set the adapter like this:
mAdapter = new CustomAdapter(getActivity(), dataSet, new CustomAdapter.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(View v, int position, boolean isLongClick, List<SomeObject> mDataSet) {
if (isLongClick) {
//Long click
SomeObject obj = mDataSet.get(position);
} else {
//Normal click
SomeObject obj = mDataSet.get(position);
}
}
});
Use interfaces to handle onClicks.
Put this in the adapter:
public interface OnItemClickListener {
void onClickItem(View view, int position);
}
public void SetOnItemClickListener(OnItemClickListener mItemClickListener) {
this.mItemClickListener = mItemClickListener;
}
and then in view holder do this:
public class PasalBabVH extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder {
public TextView p_TextView;
public TextView b_TextView;
public PasalBabVH(View itemView) {
super(itemView);
p_TextView = (TextView) itemView.findViewById(R.id.uud_pasal);
b_TextView = (TextView) itemView.findViewById(R.id.uud_bab);
p_TextView.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (mItemClickListener != null) {
}
}
});
b_TextView.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (mItemClickListener != null) {
}
}
});
}
public void bind(PasalBabModel mx) {
p_TextView.setText(mx.getpasalbab_p());
b_TextView.setText(mx.getpasalbab_b());
}
}
In fragment do this:
adapter.SetOnItemClickListener(new PasalBabAdapter.OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClickItem(View view, int position) {
}});
