i have a Device parent class like this

what i mean is something like

i have tried the visitor pattern but in my case is not the right one because it doesn't allow me to return the value.
the only way seems to be adding in the handler class a method for each value of each device like this

If it is unavoidable to deal with casting at least do it in one place. Since the calling code already expects a particular subclass from getById method then update that method to be generic and do all the casting inside it:

Using instances of a class as reference

I need some help on my class design or better said a reference to a common design pattern for a problem.
I am working in the aircraft industry. So far my programming skills are VBA and basic JAVA applications.
As an engineer my task is to create CAD Models for fixating components in and on to aircraft kitchens. To ensure a high reusability and to reduce development time I want to create a program which can recommend previous solutions.
Basically each aircraft operator can select from a catalog which galleys/kitchens (Monument) it would like to have installed. Inside these Monuments are multiple compartments. Inside a compartment we can install multiple equipment’s/components.
I would like to write a program which can tell me "you have installed these components together before -> In this compartment -> in that aircraft for that customer"
I have modeled the compartment, the monuments, and the aircraft. Each class extends form the same class BaseHolder:

The problem I am having is that this design seems to have many flaws. Apart from it being rather tedious: getElement(n).getElement(n).getElement(n)
Adding elements to a compartment results in all aircrafts using the same compartment, having all the same equipment’s/components installed. As it is the same object in the DB. An instance of the compartment would be need. Cloning the DB Compartment before adding it to an aircraft is no option. I need to be able to change the allowable loads, a change it for all. To resolve this I thought of using some type of “wrapper” class as in:

This class might solve the problem but it is feels odd. Can anybody point me in the right direction towards a common design pattern etc. I am reading a book from the local library on design patterns. But it seems to be slightly above me. (as is maybe my task).
Any suggestions / help etc would be highly appreciated.
I hope I'm understanding this correctly.
One thing is the Component you want to install that has certain characteristics and another thing is some representation of what you have installed.
The information of your installation does not need to be in your Component but in something else, let's call it Installation.
Your Installation has to know 2 things:
What kind of Component it is.
What other Installations it has inside.
The installation will look something like this.

Java: message system needs to be able to pass various objects

I'm writing a messaging system to queue actions for my program to execute. I need to be able to pass various objects by the messages. I currently have a Msg object that accepts (Action enum, Data<?>...object). The Data object is intended to be a wrapper for any object I might pass.
Currently the Data object uses this code, with generics:

The Msg object takes Data<?>... type, so Msg has a Data<?>[] field.
If getData() is called on a Data<?> object, it returns the Object type. Obviously not ideal.
I need to be able to pass, say, Image objects as well as String objects. I'm certain there's a better way of passing arbitrary data.
The reason you're having trouble is that you're trying to get the static typing system of Java to do something that it can't. Once you convert from a Data<T> to a Data<?>, whatever T was is effectively lost. There's no clean way to get it back.
The quickest way to get it to work (from what you have right now) is to start throwing casts everywhere, like this:
Data<?> d = new Data("Hello");
String contents = (String)d.getData();
This is kind of a terrible idea, so let's go back to the drawing board.
If (ideally), you have all of the types you could ever need ahead of time (i.e. every Data is either a String or an Image or an Integer), then you can pretty easily (though it's a bit tedious) define a Sum type (aka a union if you're coming from C) of the different types of data you'll have to handle. As a class invariant, we assume that exactly one of the fields is non-null, and the rest are null. For this example I'll assume it can be either a String, an Image, or an Integer, but it's fairly simple to add or remove types from Data as necessary.

One necessary side effect is that we cannot wrap null without causing exceptional behavior. Is this is desired, it isn't too difficult to modify the class to allow for it.
With this Data class, it's pretty easy to do if-else logic to parse it.

If you call getData().getClass() you will get the class or type that was passed, which doesn't seem to me to be the same as an Object. You might not know what you are getting, but you can either find out or define a common interface for everything you might pass. You could for example, call toString() or getClass() on anything passed. Your question is that you are passing any conceivable object, so my question is what are you going to do with it? If you are going to serialize it into a database you don't need know anything about what type it is, otherwise you can test it or call a common interface.

Use the command line to make new objects

In my program, the user needs to input what type of players the game will have. The players are "human", "good" (for a good AI), "bad" (for a bad AI) and "random" (for a random AI). Each of these players have their own class that extend one abstract class called PlayerType.
My struggle is mapping a String to the object so I can A) create a new object using the String as sort of a key and B) get the related String from an object of its subclass
Ultimately, I just want the implicit String to only appear once in the code so I can change it later if needed without refactoring.
I've tried using just a plain HashMap, but that seems clunky with searching the keys via the values. Also, I'm guessing that I'll have to use the getInstance() method of Class, which is a little less clunky, which is okay if it's the only way.
What I would do is create an enum which essentially functions as a factory for the given type.

Of course, you'll get an IllegalArgumentException which you should probably handle by trying to get the input again.
EDIT: Apparently in this particular case, you can replace that loop with just merely
return PlayerTypes.valueOf(input).newPlayer();
And it'll do the same thing. I tend to match for additional constructor parameters in the enum, so I didn't think of using valueOf(), but it's definitely cleaner.
EDIT2: Only way to get that information back is to define an abstract method in your PlayerType class that returns the PlayerTypes enum for that given type.

I like the answer provided by Epic but I don't find maps to be clunky. So it's possible to keep a map and get the constructor call directly.

Using Class.newInstance(), as you mentioned (not sure if you had this exact way in mind):

My problem arises when I try to compile this line of code:
baseVersionResponse.populate(versionVO);
in getVersionInfo(...). I'm getting a message that looks like this:
The method populate(capture#3-of ?) in the type BaseVersionResponse is not applicable for the arguments (BaseVO)
on the populate method above.
My thought was (which is apparently incorrect) that since the baseVersionResponse is, at this point in the code, actually a specific child instance, that the class would know exactly which populate method to call from that specific child class.
What am I doing wrong here? Is there a better way to do this if this isn't the correct approach?

Ok, I took a better look at this today. The problem is that the wildcard, while the right way to go, precludes you from doing:
BaseVO versionVO = createVersionVO(version);
Because the populate call wants an extension of BaseVO, not an actual BaseVO, which doesn't qualify. That means you can't pass that versionVO variable directly.
So, to keep the type checking in place, which I think is good because you'll always want an implementation, leave pretty much everything as-is above, and change your BaseVersionResponse class to something like:
public abstract class BaseVersionResponse<T extends BaseVO> {
public T getVersion(BaseVO versionVO) {

return (T) versionVO;
} catch (ClassCastException e) {
throw new IllegalArgumentException();

public abstract void populate(BaseVO versionVO);

So, populate method now takes a BaseVO, and there's a new getVersion method to do some explicit casting for us. This should be ok since we know that the factory will always supply the right thing, but if another caller doesn't, an IllegalArgumentException is thrown.
Now, in your response class implementation, change the populate method accordingly:

So, we've changed the populate method to take BaseVO, and the getVersion method does the casting for us. All the other type checks still apply, and we're good to go.
The casting makes it feel not as clean, but for the factory approach you're using, it's really the only way (I can think of) to keep the guarantees made by the type declarations and the code pattern in tact.

If you just take out the capture of type (the "<?>"), and leave it unchecked, it should work just fine. Even using type Object would have compiled.
But, given your specific example, what you probably want is the method:
public BaseVersionResponse<?> createVersionResponse(String version)
Changed to:
public BaseVersionResponse<? extends BaseVO> createVersionResponse(String version)
Then, instead of using
BaseVersionResponse<?>
use
BaseVersionResponse<? extends BaseVO>
Since you know that the return type will be one of those things that implements the interface/class.

GWT Editor Framework - Show ENUM using ValueListBox in own editor

make your SupplierCodeEditor implement LeafValueEditor<SupplierCode>, with delegating getValue and setValue to the ValueListBox
make your SupplierCodeEditor implement IsEditor<LeafValueEditor<SupplierCode>, returning the ValueListBox's asEditor() from your own asEditor().
BTW, you absolutely don't need the getValue and setValue on your enum values.
