I'm working on a java project and made it into an executable jar. In the jar, all the correct files are included, but when running the jar, the images don't display.
When I run the program from command line, the program is able to display everything correctly.
I believe the issue might be because of how I set up the filepaths in the code?
Here's an example of my setup:

This setup works unless I try to run the program from an executable jar. So my question is how do I get it to work from a jar?
The first mistake is assuming there is a file system (directories & such) inside a Jar. There are paths to resources that might look like directories & files, but no directories or files as such.
Application resources will become embedded resources by the time of deployment, so it is wise to start accessing them as if they were, right now. An embedded-resource must be accessed by URL rather than file. See the info. page for embedded resource for how to form the URL.

I am developing a Java application which displays a big amount of images. The problem is I can't figure out how to make Java find these images.
I have followed several tutorials and answers here at Stackoverflow, but I still haven't managed to find a solution that works regardless of OS (Linux or Windows) and running method (embedded on eclipse or exported jar file). This might be due to the fact that I am still a newbie, though.
I have created a class, which I call myIcon and through this class I mean to access all of these images. In the following code, I want to pass the string "resources/icon/image.gif" to the function getIconPath. The output should be a ImageIcon of this image, since this file exists. Despite that, if I pass to this function the path to an image that doesn't exist, null should be returned. In this case, my application will display a default image (a red x).

The resources folder is a sibling to the src folder in my directory structure. That is, both resources and src are subfolders of the root directory.
When I run the code above, no image is ever found. The default image is thus always displayed and getIconPath returns null.
I am also aware of the getResource method of ClassLoader, but I still don't really understand how these things should be used.
While running in eclipse, you should print out f.getAbsolutePath(). It probably doesn't point to your file. More generally, you want to access the file as a resource. See:

There are two parts to this - making sure that when you build a jar, the images are part of it, and accessing a resource within the jar.
For the first part, I am guessing that whatever you're using to build a jar, it will put your images into the META-INF folder, which should work without too much issue (if its not there, or in with the Java class/source in the generated jar, that might cause the lookup to fail)
There is another Stack Overflow Post for the second part. The key is to make sure the images you want to load are on the classpath.

If resources is in classpath, you can find for the image at classpath, using getResource(String name) or getResourceAsStream(String name).
However, in a simple Java Project, even adding resources to build path, like this:
it will just put the folder content, in other words, just icon/..., to bin folder, something like this:
So, since resources isn't in classpath, just icon, to retrieve the images, you'll need to inform as path only /icon/image.gif, like this:

I have to write a Java Project with a Swing GUI and some smaller formal requirements like a button which does something or methods which implement something, very basic.
I have written a programm with a basic GUI including a Jtable which stores information about students(name,semester...) in a Java File.
The Problem is that the path of this java-File in my programm is relative, in my case:

Even if you can, you shouldn't. Most OS manufacturers have been saying for years that application data should not be stored in the apps. installation directory.
Instead put the file in a sub-directory of user.home. That will be a path that:
Is reproducible.
The app. should have write permissions for.

I am trying to make a mess management application in Java using NetBeans. I want to save images of Members in a specified folder inside my src directory. I just created folder named EmpImgs for storing employees images. Here is my code:

Hehe hi mate you need some help. This is a duplicate but I will cut you some slack and maybe you should delete this later. So back to basics, the jvm runs byte code, which you get from compiling java source code to .class files. Now this is different to C and C++ were you just get a .exe. You don't want to give your users a bunch of .class files in all these folders which they can edit and must run a command on the command line, but instead give them what is known as an 'archive' which is just an imutable file structure so they can't screw up the application, known as a jar in java. They can just double click on the archive (which is a jar), and the jvm will call the main method specified in the MetaInf directory (just some information about the jar, same as a manifest in other programming languages).
Now remember your application is now a jar! It is immutable! for the resasons I explained. You can't save anymore data there! Your program will still work on the command line and in IDEs because it is working as if you used your application is distrubuted as bunch of folders with the .class files, and you can write to this location.
If you want to package resources with your application you need to use streams (google it). BUT REMEMBER! you cant then save more resources into the jar! You need to write somewhere else! Maybe use a user.home directory! or a location specified from the class path and the photos will be right next to the jar! Sometimes you might need an installer for your java application, but usually you don't want to create the extra work if you don't need to.

Every time I run the exported .jar file, that contains a JFrame with an image as its icon, the file doesn't run, unless I extract the file. In the compiler it is running. I dont want to make a launcher that saves both, the resources package and the jar file, in a directory.

This seems to be the behavior of using File to your resources. Take for example

Image image = ImagIO.read(file);
And you project structure (Note the resources should actually be in the src, so that it builds into the jar automatically - unless you configure it differently. But for the sake of this argument, let's say you do confgigure it where resources is built to the jar)

Some examination:
Run from IDE - WORKS! Why? Using File looks for files on the file system. Using a relative path, the search will begin from the "working directory", which in the case of the IDE in generally the project root. So "resources/image.png" is a valid path, relative to ProjectRoot
Build jar, say it ends up in a dist dir in the project. This is what it looks like

dist
ProjectRoot.jar
Now for the sake of this argument (and is actually the correct way), let's try and print the URL of the resource in out program, so that when you run the jar, it prints out the URL of the file

When we run the jar C:\ProjectRoot\dist> java -jar ProjectRoot.jar We will see the print out C:\ProjectRoot\dist\ProjectRoot.jar!\resources\image.png. You can obviously see even though the current working directory is the location of the jar, the paths no longer match, with the added jar ProjectRoot.jar! location.
So why does it work when we extract it. Well when you extract it, then the path is correct

When you run from the C:\ProjectRoot\dist >, the resource dir is where is should be.
Ok enough with the explanation.
For this reason, when you want to read embedded resources, they should be read from an URL as Andrew Thompson mentioned. This url should be relative to the class calling it, or the class loader. Here are a couple different ways:

Notice the /. This will bring us to the root of the classpath, where the resources dir will be. URL can be passed to many constructors, like ImageIcon(URL) or `ImageI.read(URL)
You can use:
InputStream is = getClass().getResourceAsStream("/resources/image.png");
Which will use an URL under the hood. You can use InputStream with many constructors also.
There's also ways to use the class loader, which will start at the root, so you don't need the /
URL url = getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("resources/image.png");
So there are a few ways you can go about it. But in general, reading File with hard coded string paths is never a good idea, when using embedded resources. It's possible to obtain the path dynamically so you can use File, but you will still need to use one of the aforementioned techniques, which unless you really need a File would be pointless, as you can do what you need with the InputStream or URL

I need to read a text file when I start my program. I'm using eclipse and started a new java project. In my project folder I got the "src" folder and the standard "JRE System Library" + staedteliste.txt... I just don't know where to put the text file. I literally tried every folder I could think off....I cannot use a "hard coded" path because the text file needs to be included with my app...

Ask first yourself: Is your file an internal component of your application?
(That usually implies that it's packed inside your JAR, or WAR if it is a web-app; typically, it's some configuration file or static resource, read-only).
If the answer is yes, you don't want to specify an absolute path for the file. But you neither want to access it with a relative path (as your example), because Java assumes that path is relative to the "current directory". Usually the preferred way for this scenario is to load it relatively from the classpath.
Java provides you the classLoader.getResource() method for doing this. And Eclipse (in the normal setup) assumes src/ is to be in the root of your classpath, so that, after compiling, it copies everything to your output directory ( bin/ ), the java files in compiled form ( .class ), the rest as is.
So, for example, if you place your file in src/Files/myfile.txt, it will be copied at compile time to bin/Files/myfile.txt ; and, at runtime, bin/ will be in (the root of) your classpath. So, by calling getResource("/Files/myfile.txt") (in some of its variants) you will be able to read it.
Edited: Further, if your file is conceptually tied to a java class (eg, some com.example.MyClass has a MyClass.cfg associated configuration file), you can use the getResource() method from the class and use a (resource) relative path: MyClass.getResource("MyClass.cfg"). The file then will be searched in the classpath, but with the class package pre-appended. So that, in this scenario, you'll typically place your MyClass.cfg and MyClass.java files in the same directory.
One path to take is to
Add the file you're working with to the classpath
Use the resource loader to locate the file:

Suppose you have a project called "TestProject" on Eclipse and your workspace folder is located at E:/eclipse/workspace. When you build an Eclipse project, your classpath is then e:/eclipse/workspace/TestProject. When you try to read "staedteliste.txt", you're trying to access the file at e:/eclipse/workspace/TestProject/staedteliste.txt.
If you want to have a separate folder for your project, then create the Files folder under TestProject and then access the file with (the relative path) /Files/staedteliste.txt. If you put the file under the src folder, then you have to access it using /src/staedteliste.txt. A Files folder inside the src folder would be /src/Files/staedteliste.txt
Instead of using the the relative path you can use the absolute one by adding e:/eclipse/workspace/ at the beginning, but using the relative path is better because you can move the project without worrying about refactoring as long as the project folder structure is the same.
Just create a folder Files under src and put your file there.
This will look like src/Files/myFile.txt
Note:
In your code you need to specify like this Files/myFile.txt
e.g.
getResource("Files/myFile.txt");
So when you build your project and run the .jar file this should be able to work.
Depending on your Java class package name, you're probably 4 or 5 levels down the directory structure.
If your Java class package is, for example, com.stackoverflow.project, then your class is located at src/com/stackoverflow/project.
You can either move up the directory structure with multiple ../, or you can move the text file to the same package as your class. It would be easier to move the text file.

see and copy the complete path stored in HDD like (if in UNIX "/home/sjaisawal/Space-11.4-template/provisioning/devenv/Test/src/testpath/testfile.txt")
put this complete path and try.

If this is a simple project, you should be able to drag the txt file right into the project folder. Specifically, the "project folder" would be the highest level folder. I tried to do this (for a homework project that I'm doing) by putting the txt file in the src folder, but that didn't work. But finally I figured out to put it in the project file.
A good tutorial for this is http://www.vogella.com/articles/JavaIO/article.html. I used this as an intro to i/o and it helped.

All what you have to do is to select your file (assuming it's same simple form of txt file), then drag it to the project in Eclipse and then drop it there. Choose Copy instead of Link as it's more flexible. That's it - I just tried that.
