When scrolling we see the following - appbar image starts hiding under the content and beyond the top edge of the screen. Parameter layout_collapseParallaxMultiplier determines what part of the image (in percent) will be hidden under the bottom content.
So, for example, setting this parameter to value 1.0 means that top boundary of appbar's image is bound to the top edge of the screen and doesn't move when scrolling. And main content is moving up the top of the image.
When the parameter is not set this corresponds to the value 0.5 and image will be overlapped above and below synchronously.

I'm creating a tabbed activity. As long as the first tab is selected, the soft keyboard should be visible. I achieved that by adding this line to my manifest file in the activity tag:

As the keyboard opens, the space for the layout shrinks. The most space is occupated by an ImageView. I want it to shrink with the layout size to allow the other 2 views (which should remain the same size) to fit on the screen. However, although the soft input mode is set to adjustResize, the ImageView keeps its size after the keyboard opens. Here's a comparison of the current layout and the one I want to achieve (the ImageView is the red rectangle):

I've created an Android Project from scratch on Android Studio 4.0, using the "Tabbed Activity" template and uploaded it to GitHub.
I've had no issues with the resize taking place when the activity is resized.
What Did I change?
In the manifest.xml I added android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize"
I modified the default layout for the fragment in the tab to include an ImageView (called imageToShrink) and an EditText (called editLayout).
I left the existing TextView untouched, except that since it's at the top, I made it the HEAD of the vertical Chain, and gave it a 0.0 BIAS to be aligned at the top, rather at the center.
When you tap on the cyan EditText at the bottom, the keyboard pops (I made it number only so it's even taller) and you can see how the image is re-drawn after its new size is recomputed.

your ImageView should not have wrap_content attributes, because it will always have constant size and wont be able to resize automatically. I would suggest using ConstraintLayout and use app:layout_constraintDimensionRatio. Other option is use LinearLayout weight (not recommending).
Ant third option is to detect when keyboard is visible, when not with ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalLayoutListener and do stuff programmaticaly.

I want my whole screen to scroll but only my recycler will scroll at the moment. This occurs despite all elements being placed in a linear layout inside a Scroll View.

Found out: it seems best practice is to set the recyclerView to be the whole layout and make it contain multiple view types.
I won't be using a nested scroll view.

I tried adding a FAB and it disappears. I want that behavior for my image thumbnail. Also, any idea on how to bring the thumbnail image down similar to the image I provided?
See the thing is ImageView "book_cover_thumb" cannot get scrolled automatically and get disappeared as it do not have any scrolling behavior like FloatingImageButton "fab". To make imageview "book_cover_thumb" scroll and disappear you have to make a Custom Behavior class and set it to imageview "book_cover_thumb".

I am trying to place a view on top of another view and a bit outside of its bounding box.

The second arrow shows where I expected the small rectangle view.
Why does it show up on the top although I have specified the same top margin as the linear layout bellow it?
If I remove the android:layout_above="#+id/linear" then it goes where the second arrow shows either but bellow the orange view and not above it.
Why does relative layout do that?
It is not RelativeLayout that does that but nature of margins. If you put a view (orange box) and say that there is margin of 200dp above it, then no other view can be placed in that 200dp margin.
To center a orange box and then put another view above it you need to do something like this.

This will put orange view in center and red view directly on top of it. Notice that you don't even need LinearLayout but can have orange view in RelativeLayout directly.
Layout_above causes it to layout with its bottom directly on top of the view its named above. If you want to make it layout directly above, you'd have 0 marginTop.
Without the layout above, it goes below because the z order is determined by the order of views in the file- the lower in the file, the higher the z order.
If you want it to appear on the upper left corner of the orange view, do layout_alignTop="#id/linear" and make sure the smaller view is later in the file than the bigger view. Do not put a margin on it.

When you include the attribute android:layout_marginTop="200dp" in the LinearLayout android:id="#+id/linear", the margin is considered to be a part of the LinearLayout container.
Hence, effectively, the container wrapping the LinearLayout includes the margin android:layout_marginTop="200dp". And since your root layout is a Relative Layout, the LinearLayout is aligned to the top of the root layout by default (since the LinearLayout doesn't contain any relative attributes like android:layout_below, android:layout_above etc). So when you include the android:layout_above="#+id/linear" attribute in your View tag given by android:id="#+id/view", it is trying to place the View above LinearLayout which starts from the top of the screen.
A better way to code your layout would be:

I have implemented an activity with two slides, the slides content is a fragment with RecyclerView that loads data from my server and creates a GridLayout with images (like in image gallery).
I have added the behavior of scrolling so when you scroll you don't see the toolbar.
My problem is that when the activity starts with the fragment the toolbar is half hidden and when i continue to scroll down and the toolbar is completely hidden the CoordinatorLayout from under is exposed so i get this thing:
as you can see the light green is the CoordinatorLayout and the red is the ViewPager and what i want to achieve is that when you scroll more you will only see the red background and never the green one.
