Found the issue. The issue is related to the Jmockit version that was used. The issue got resolved after I reverted the JMockit version to 1.42,

The issue is closely related to constructing instrumentation that can be used to reform classes to mock objects. For JMockit to run, the Jmockit JAR needs to be passed as a java agent. Prior to 1.43, If the java agent is not passed, JMockit library searches the project's dependencies and adds this to the VM object automatically. After 1.42, It was deemed by JMockit developers that this way of finding the JAR is not a good standard and is removed completely. Thereby requiring java agent to be passed manually.

It was working at first, but when I added the JaCoCo plugin and tried to run it, that's when I encountered the error above. Moreover, I removed it to see if the error will go away. Unfortunately, I still encounter the same error even though I removed the JaCoCo plugin. Can someone help me with my problem? BTW I'm using JUNIT 5.

Worth to check if all junit-jupiter dependencies in the path have the same version.
In my project junit-jupiter dependencies are connected manually and overwrite the vertions from Spring Test. This was the problem in my case.
Run mvn dependency:tree and check.
If you are using SpringBoot, then the Spring dependency management is your problem. SpringBoot maintains some default dependency versions. you need to override those in your pom.xml file's .
Refer this to see what versions of junit.jupiter and mockito are used by your springboot version. Then override those in your pom.xml with the intended version. For eg:

You probably have an older version of a Spring library in the dependency graph. This can happen through transitive dependencies if you don't use constraints to minimize the risk of incompatibilities. You can check if this is the case through gradle dependencies --configuration testRuntimeClasspath and check if the version of the Spring libraries are as you expect.
If not, you can fix it using the the Spring Boot BOM like this:

Alternatively, you can also use the Spring Dependency Management plugin like this:

I want to create a standalone web application with Spring Cloud Function and have a possibility to cover it by the unit tests. I've set it up according to the reference guide:
I created the maven project with the spring-boot-starter-parent.
Added spring-cloud-dependencies to a dependencyManagement.
Added spring-cloud-starter-function-web starter.
Added testing dependencies:
Added junit-bom for the 5th version to a dependencyManagement.
Added spring-boot-starter-test starter and excluded junit from it.

Oleg, your question is a bit unclear in its title since it appears you explicitly want to deploy your function as web endpoint and test it as such. So that's different then "how to test spring functions".
Anyway, we probably need to update our docs a bit to make it clear but here it is.

If your intention is to only test function as standalone, then all you need to do is inject FunctionCatalog, execute lookup operation and invoke the function. You can reference this test for more info/examples
I'm using variables in application.yml to parameterise between environments, these variables are set by a tag in pom.xml and when I run JUnit tests in IntelliJ Idea, the application throw error while load application.yml
