Jackson Deserializer - inject key:value pairs if not present in serialized data - java

I save the payload of events as JSON string into a database.
To only have one version of the events in code while still being able to read old events I want to "upcast" the serialized data before deserialization.
I thought about something like this:
public Object deserialize(String data, Class<?> clazz) throws IOException {
data = upcaster.upcast(data, clazz);
return objectMapper.readValue(data, clazz);
}
But this means I transform the string into some JSON object twice. Once for upcasting the data and once inside the standard jackson mapper.
Is there a way to customize jackson between building the json-object and building my event object?
Something like:

Alternatively, I could add my own deserializer that changes the given JSON data before calling the standard deserializer I guess?
What's the normal way of doing something like this with jackson?

One option is custom deserialization with a dedicated deserializer class (per your own class). You would then have to maintain the deserializer class to make sure that it provides any missing data.
It should work for a handful of classes, if you have a lot then there might be better ways.

Jackson case changes in JSON serialization

I'm having some cases where Jackson is changing cases of fields in a POJO during serialization in ways I would not expect. I'm using the following block to do the serialization:
ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper()
String json = mapper.writeValueAsString(o)
I'm noticing that all of the fields which are prepended with 'v' are getting the next capital letter also lowercased. For example, for the POJO field as below:
vStatus1 = "3424522"
I see after serialization the following JSON field:
vstatus1="3424522"
This is mainly important to me because I'm using a switch to go between two different web services which should provide the same output map, but this hiccup is preventing me from doing it cleanly.
If you are using Jackson, you can set the #JsonProperty on the field's getter and change it to whatever you like...

how to use method canDeserialize ObjectMapper class from jackson API?

I want to use method canDeserialize, because at moment deserialization i want to get type class for apply at custom deserialization, as about next example :

In this case Account class have annotation #JsonDeserialize for a custom deserialization .
To directly answer your question, this is how you use the canDeserialize method:

Where Bean is the name of your Java class to be checked.
But wait, you are trying to solve the wrong problem. You are struggling with the logic for your method because it has not been designed properly. You are really asking too much of the Java runtime (and Jackson library), by trying to make them infer all the required information about the type to be instantiated (based on the parameterized return). To solve this you should include the class representing the type to be deserialized as a parameter to the method, greatly simplifying the logic:
public <T> T deserialize(byte[] bytes, Class<T> clazz) throws IOException,
JsonProcessingException {
return new ObjectMapper().readValue(bytes, clazz);
}
At this point you have probably realized that the method above provides no additional functionality over just calling ObjectMapper.readValue directly, so ... just do that! No need to define custom methods, just use ObjectMapper and you are good to go. Keep in mind that you do not need to do anything explicit to trigger custom deserialization of classes. The Jackson runtime automatically detects when a class has a custom deserializer and invokes it.

Jackson JSON library: how to instantiate a class that contains abstract fields

I want to convert a JSON string into java object, but the class of this object contains abstract fields, which Jackson can't instantiate, and doesn't produce the object. What is the easiest way to tell it about some default implementation of an abstract class, like
setDefault(AbstractAnimal.class, Cat.class);
or to decide about the implementation class based on JSON attribute name, eg. for JSON object:
{
...
cat: {...}
...
}
i would just wite:
setImpl("cat", Cat.class);
I know it's possible in Jackson to embed class information inside JSON, but I don't want to complicate the JSON format I use. I want to decide what class to use just by setting default implementation class, or by the attribute name ('cat') - like in XStream library, where you write:
xStream.alias("cat", Cat.class);
Is there a way to do so, especially in one line, or does it require some more code?
There are multiple ways; before version 1.8, simplest way is probably to do:
#JsonDeserialize(as=Cat.class)
public abstract class AbstractAnimal { ... }
as to deciding based on attribute, that is best done using #JsonTypeInfo, which does automatic embeddeding (when writing) and use of type information.

Jackson refers to this as Polymorphic Deserialization.
It definitely helped me with my issue. I had an abstract class that I was saving in a database and needed to unmarshal it to a concrete instance of a class (understandably).
It will show you how to properly annotate the parent abstract class and how to teach jackson how to pick among the available sub-class candidates at run-time when unmarshaling.
If you want to pollute neither your JSON with extra fields nor your classes with annotation, you can write a very simple module and deserializer that uses the default subclass you want. It is more than one line due to some boilerplate code, but it is still relatively simple.

Serializing array types and arrays in Jackson

i have a task serializing a class like RPC message to JSON
using Jackson in Java. I have to say that i´m a complete newbie to Jackson.
Now what i´m trying to do is to serialize array type into JSON.
I have:
ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();
a message is then put into HashMap (simplified)
LinkedHashMap<String,Object> map = new LinkedHashMap<String, Object>();
if(msg.getSignal())
map.put("signal",msg.getMethodName());
else {
map.put("method", msg.getMethodName());
map.put("retT", msg.getReturnType()); //returns Class<?> type

for method name "add" and return type int[], this results in:
{"method":"add","retT":"[I"}
Can anyhone please help me how to achieve "[int]" instead of "[I"?
I assume that 'msg.getReturnType()' returns Class; and if so, Jackson will just call toString() on it. If so, you would want to instead do conversion yourself, to get actual String value you want.
You can also simplify code a bit, since ObjectMapper has 'writeValueAsString()' method:
return mapper.writeValueAsString(wrapper);
which will internally handle creation of StringWriter and JsonGenerator, to achieve what you are doing.

Java type conversion where types are not known until runtime

I'm trying to write a data access layer for an AJAX web project. This DAL has to convert data coming in via an AJAX servlet to objects that can be passed to a PreparedStatement for execution.
Data in the AJAX servlet, retrieved by using HttpServletRequest.getParameter(...), come in as strings.
In each data class, I have a known set of fields as well as their data types, e.g. CustomerId(integer), CustomerName(string).
I can of course write a method in the Customer class to handle the conversion, but this means I have to do it for every data object's class. I would much rather have a generic method that does conversion, e.g.
Object convert(String value, Class<?> targetType) { ... }
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Create an utility class with all conversion methods you would like to use. Inside its static initializer, make use of reflection to collect all those methods by parameter type and return type in a map. Then, in the convert() method just pick the method which suits the given source and target type and invoke it. Make use of generics to fix the return type to be the same as the target type:
public static <T> T convert(Object from, Class<T> to)

But as bmargulies pointed out, JSON is also an interesting option. You could let ajax to send all parameters as one JSON string. Then, you can use a JSON-to-Javabean converter like Google Gson to convert the JSON string to a fullworthy Javabean like Customer. It'll be as simple as:
String jsondata = request.getParameter("jsondata");
Customer customer = new Gson().fromJson(jsondata, Customer.class);
// ...

There are JSON libraries that will do data type conversion. Jackson is one. Or, you could code the whole think using a JAX-RS service framework instead of a raw servlet, and it will take care of all this for you. Apache CXF is one framework that contains this support. Since you are asking for a generic solution, why not use one that's already out there.
We do this exact thing using a plethora of static converters in a utility class. It isn't elegant but it sure is easy and effective.

Since you want to use the parameters in your PreparedStatement, why do you have to convert them at all?
When using setString(index, parameter) SQL will be happy to do the conversion for you.
Thus the only thing you might want to do is some kind of validation that the input is really valid (or you could even leave this part to your SQL engine which will throw an exception if it doesn't understand you.
