I am trying to create a simple android application which have to display a map in a fragment and the last known location of the device. I would like to use Google API for the location, but whenever I call the method fusedLocationProviderClient.getLastLocation the result is always null and the position shown on the map is always latitude 0, longitude 0.
public class MapsFragment extends Fragment {
FusedLocationProviderClient client;
double latitude, longitude;
private OnMapReadyCallback callback = new OnMapReadyCallback() {
#Override
public void onMapReady(GoogleMap googleMap) {
//Check condition
if (ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(getActivity(),
Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) ==
PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED &&
ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(getActivity(),
Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) ==
PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
//When permission is granted, call method
getCurrentLocation();
} else {
//When permission is not granted, request permission
requestPermissions(new String[]{Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION,
Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION}, 100);
}
//LatLng object creation
LatLng latLng = new LatLng(latitude, longitude);
//Set map coordinates using latLng object
googleMap.addMarker(new MarkerOptions().position(latLng).title("Current Position"));
googleMap.moveCamera(CameraUpdateFactory.newLatLng(latLng));
}
};
#Nullable
#Override
public View onCreateView(#NonNull LayoutInflater inflater,
#Nullable ViewGroup container,
#Nullable Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View v = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_maps, container, false);
return v;
}
#Override
public void onViewCreated(#NonNull View view, #Nullable Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onViewCreated(view, savedInstanceState);
SupportMapFragment mapFragment =
(SupportMapFragment) getChildFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map);
if (mapFragment != null) {
mapFragment.getMapAsync(callback);
}
}
#Override
public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, #NonNull String[] permissions, #NonNull int[] grantResults) {
super.onRequestPermissionsResult(requestCode, permissions, grantResults);
//Check condition

PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED)) {
//When permission are granted, call method
getCurrentLocation();
} else {
Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "Permission denied", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
#SuppressLint("MissingPermission")
private void getCurrentLocation() {
client = LocationServices.getFusedLocationProviderClient(getActivity());
//Initialize location manager, whose allow to get periodic updates of the location
LocationManager locationManager = (LocationManager) getActivity()
.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
//Check condition, when GPS and NETWORK provider are enabled, WORK
if (locationManager.isProviderEnabled(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER)
|| locationManager.isProviderEnabled(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER)) {
//When location is enabled, get last location, THE PROBLEM IS THERE
client.getLastLocation().addOnCompleteListener(new OnCompleteListener<Location>() {
#Override
public void onComplete(#NonNull Task<Location> task) {
Location location = task.getResult();
//Check condition
if (location != null) {
//When location result is not null, set latitude and longitude
latitude = location.getLatitude();
longitude = location.getLongitude();
} else {
//When location result is not null, initialize location request
LocationRequest locationRequest = new LocationRequest()
.setPriority(LocationRequest.PRIORITY_HIGH_ACCURACY)
.setInterval(10000)
.setFastestInterval(1000)
.setNumUpdates(1);
//Initialize location callback
LocationCallback locationCallback = new LocationCallback() {
#Override
public void onLocationResult(#NonNull LocationResult locationResult) {
//Initialize location
Location location1 = locationResult.getLastLocation();
//Set latitude and longitude
latitude = location1.getLatitude();
longitude = location1.getLatitude();
}
};
//Request location updates
client.requestLocationUpdates(locationRequest, locationCallback, Looper.myLooper());
}
}
});
} else {
//When location service is not enabled, open location setting
startActivity(new Intent(Settings.ACTION_LOCATION_SOURCE_SETTINGS)
.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK));
}
}
Last location is a cahced location on the device so getting null means nothing used the location recently. If you open google maps or something that uses your gps location first, let it get your location then go back into your app you will get a valid location back

How to show the location permission pop up with an allow and a deny button?
I have function that receives the location, but now I need to go to the settings by myself and turn the location on.
I want that when the User opens the fragment, the location pop up gets shown.
This is the code I currently have:

Showing Location permission popup and turning location on are two different things.
You still have to go to setting to turn location on (if it's off), while permission is just allowing your app to use the location when it's on.
To get permission you can use this method RunTimePermissions.verifyStoragePermissions(getActivity());
public class RunTimePermissions {
// Storage Permissions variables
private static final int REQUEST_CODE = 6361;
private static String[] PERMISSIONS = {
Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION,
};
//persmission method.
public static void verifyStoragePermissions(Activity activity) {
// Check if we have read or write permission
int locationPermission = ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(activity, Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION);
if (locationPermission != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED ) {
// We don't have permission so prompt the user
ActivityCompat.requestPermissions(
activity,
PERMISSIONS,
REQUEST_CODE
);
}
}
}
Add in manifests:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" />
Add in your activity:
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
String[] locationPermissions= {"android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION","android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION"};
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
Handler handler = new Handler();
Runnable runnable = new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainActivity.this,
android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED
&& ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(MainActivity.this,
android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED)
{
ActivityCompat.requestPermissions(MainActivity.this, locationPermissions, 121);
}
}
};
handler.postDelayed(runnable, 1000);
}
}
I am using Google Maps to obtain my current location and display a red marker on my location. So far it only the mMap.setMyLocation(true); works for my location. How do I set the userLocation as soon as I load the map ?

You can't. Getting a location takes time. It won't be available until your callback is called, which means you can't load it until then. You could try calling getLastKnownLocation, but it will return null the majority of the time as well. The best solution is not to rely on it until the callback is made.
on method, OnMapReady use this code
if (!mMap.isMyLocationEnabled())
mMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
Location userLocation = getLocation();
and use this method to get the last location if you want it
public Location getLocation() {
LocationManager lm = (LocationManager) getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
Location myLocation = lm.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);
if (myLocation == null) {
Criteria criteria = new Criteria();
criteria.setAccuracy(Criteria.ACCURACY_COARSE);
String provider = lm.getBestProvider(criteria, true);
myLocation = lm.getLastKnownLocation(provider);
}
return myLocation;
}
Note: GPS_PROVIDER does not work indoors, so you should try it outdoor.
maybe you want to start the callback just if the last location before more than one minute. use this code
if (System.currentTimeMillis()-myLocation.getTime()>60000){
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 1, 1, locationListener);
};
I have added a Support Place Autocomplete fragment inside a Map Fragment, and it does not seem to work properly for some reason. Whenever I search for a place, the map moves to the correct location for a split second, and automatically returns back to the user's current location for some reason.

As I am trying to fetch latitude and longitude of my current location on google maps, its not returning any value neither it is enabling my button to get the current location.
I am pretty new in android .
public class ChatFragment extends Fragment{
// Google Map
private GoogleMap googleMap;
GPSTracker gpsTracker = new GPSTracker(getContext());
protected String latitude,longitude;
public ChatFragment() {
// Required empty public constructor
}
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
View chatfrag = inflater.inflate(R.layout.chatfragment, container, false);
try {
// Loading map
initilizeMap();
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
return chatfrag;
}
/**
* function to load map. If map is not created it will create it for you
*/
private void initilizeMap()
{
if (googleMap == null) {
SupportMapFragment mapFrag = (SupportMapFragment) getChildFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map);
googleMap = mapFrag.getMap();
LocationManager locationManager = (LocationManager) getActivity().getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, (LocationListener) this);
Location getLastLocation = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.PASSIVE_PROVIDER);
double currentlong = getLastLocation.getLatitude();
double currentlat = getLastLocation.getLongitude();
System.out.print(currentlat);
System.out.print(currentlong);
if (ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(getContext(), android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED && ActivityCompat.checkSelfPermission(getContext(), android.Manifest.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED)
{
// TODO: Consider calling
// ActivityCompat#requestPermissions
// here to request the missing permissions, and then overriding
// public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions,
// int[] grantResults)
// to handle the case where the user grants the permission. See the documentation
// for ActivityCompat#requestPermissions for more details.
return;
}
googleMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
googleMap.getUiSettings().setMyLocationButtonEnabled(true);
// check if map is created successfully or not
if (googleMap == null) {
Toast.makeText(getActivity(),
"Sorry! unable to create maps", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT)
.show();
}
}
}
#Override
public void onResume() {
super.onResume();
// initilizeMap();
}
}
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
If you want to get current location from google map then try this,
googleMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true);
double currentlong = googleMap.getMyLocation().getLatitude();
double currentlat = googleMap.getMyLocation().getLongitude();
// if you want to get location update then implement this
googleMap.setOnMyLocationChangeListener(new GoogleMap.OnMyLocationChangeListener() {
#Override
public void onMyLocationChange(Location loc) {
// get current location update
}
});
I hope it is useful to you.
